Run, Don't Walk: The Curious and Courageous Life Inside Walter Reed Army Medical Center
In her six years at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Adele Levine rehabilitated soldiers admitted in worse and worse shape. Reading this book brought me right back to the hours I spent on a treatment table surrounded by my fellow Wounded Warriors as we pushed each other, using grit, gallows humor and even bribes of cookies in order to face yet another day of pain on our road back to our new futures. —Josh Hanagarne, author of The World’s Strongest Librarian “An amputee rehabilitation center is a crucible of emotion, and this book throbs with the pulse of a human heart. A master of understatement, she paints a picture of what it's like to work at this strange job, patching up broken soldiers only to be sent back to war— and tells her own story, setting her own sorrows and struggles beside the pain of her amputee patients.”. —Lydia Netzer, author of Shine Shine Shine.
Reviews
"I'm a Critical Care Air Transport Team physician and an ICU doc. When I'm in charge of the ICU, I see my patients leave with 2 women wearing big belts and wheeling a walker and a patient."
"Adele Levine's stories of her work at Walter Reed Army Medical Center as a physical therapist during the height of the casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan give us a poignant, at times sobering, but at more times touching and humorous account of her daily experiences there."
"It gets gritty as Levine honestly describes the burnout of the second hand smoke of war and dealing with an extremely difficult (and famous) patient population."
"Having spent a lot of time as a Marine w/ recovering wounded from Vietnam in 67 and the last 10+ years, I can not recommend this book enough."
"I can't tell you how disappointed I was when years later I finally forced myself to go to Bethesda to "give it a chance" and had to ask about ten people how and where to find that bust. There was something SO special about being even a minuscule piece of the jigsaw puzzle of history and accomplishment and service and legend that was Walter Reed - I will ALWAYS treasure the blessing of having been a part of that. I was able to tour the MATC in 2010 during a reunion of the Army Nurse Corps Association - so it was easy for me to visualize everything Adele described, just like watching a movie!"
"You might think reading about wounded warriors would be depressing, but Levine manages to reveal the heartache with humor and a dose of humanity. Wounded vets walk our streets, are interviewed on news channels and populate television commercials, but what we see is far different from what Ms. Levine beheld in the amputee clinic."

The Creative Destruction of Medicine: How the Digital Revolution Will Create Better Health Care
In The Creative Destruction of Medicine , Eric Topol—one of the nation's top physicians—calls for consumer activism to demand innovation and the democratization of medical care. He's started a leading medical school, identified the first genes to underlie development of heart disease, led major medical centers, and been a pioneer of wireless medicine. As Eric Topol writes, thirty years ago, ‘digital medicine' referred to rectal examinations. This marvelous book by Eric Topol, a leading cardiologist, gene hunter and medical thinker, answers not just these questions, but many many more. James Fowler, Professor of Medical Genetics and Political Science, UC San Diego, and author of Connected “Eric Topol is uniquely positioned to write such a timely and important book. The Creative Destruction of Medicine is a highly informative and enjoyable book, which truly triggers the reader's imagination as to what is possible” Reed Tuckson, M.D., Executive Vice President and Chief of Medical Affairs, UnitedHealth Group “Eric Topol has written an extraordinarily important book at just the right moment. Drawing upon a unique and impressive array of convergent expertise in medical research, clinical medicine, consumer and health technological advancements, and health policy, Dr. Topol opens the door for an essential discussion of old challenges viewed through an innovative lens. J. Craig Venter, Chairman and President, J. Craig Venter Institute “Our sequencing of the human genome eleven years ago was the beginning of the individualized medicine revolution, a revolution that cannot happen without digitized personal phenotype information. Eric Topol provides a path forward using your digitized genome, remote sensing devices and social networking to place the educated at the center of medicine.”. Mehmet Oz, M.D., Professor and Vice-Chair of Surgery, NY Presbyterian/Columbia University “Eric Topol outlines the creative destruction of medicine that must be led by informed consumers. Dr. Topol explains how iPhones, cloud computing, gene sequencing, wireless sensors, modernized clinical trials, internet connectivity, advanced diagnostics, targeted therapies and other science will enable the individualization of medicine—and force overdue radical change in how medicine is delivered, regulated, and reimbursed.

"I am an electrical engineer who worked in high tech (and the figures feel as if they came from a strategy/marketing presentation in that field)."
"It just sucks that the average person interested in health isn't going to be able to read this book, nor are ideas like this the impetus for social change, because unfortunately complicated ideas from smart people aren't understood by most and thus don't go anywhere without social media efforts and popularity."
"The medical system in place from (say) the mid-20th century forward, will not be able to handle the continual flow of retiring baby boomers, let alone senior citizens with ever increasing life expectancies. It would seem the dentists got to the answer faster than medical doctors were able to: Delegate anything and everything you can to less expensive staff so you can see more patients and reap the rewards of an expanded practice."
"The title attributes this to the digital revolution, but the book is at least as much about the impact of the science of genetics. The combination of these two will produce a medical approach far more closely targetted to the individual, far more precise, and -- ulimately -- far cheaper. The one instance in which that may be true is the section on the role of genomics in medicine, but that is a hard thing to explain, and not part of the general medical knowledge base -- Dr. Topol notes that at the last report, only 2 out of 150 U.S. medical schools had "more than a brief, cursory curriculum" devoted to genomics beyond simple Mendelian traits. Stylistic issues, however, should not deter readers: there's so much very important stuff in this book that it's worth a bit of a slog."

The Body Builders: Inside the Science of the Engineered Human
Chronicling the ways new technology has retooled our physical expectations and mental processes, Piore visits people who have regrown parts of their fingers and legs in the wake of terrible traumas, tries on a muscle suit that allows him to lift ninety pounds with his fingertips, dips into the race to create “Viagra for the brain,” and shadows the doctors trying to give mute patients the ability to communicate telepathically. Piore takes us inside the technological revolution that is fixing broken limbs and enhancing the human body through bioengineering. “A fascinating dive into what’s happening right now in bioengineering research — from brain-computer interfaces to bionic limbs — that will redefine human-machine interactions in the years to come.” (Salon). A wonderful book that will excite your intellect and emotions.” (Fareed Zakaria, author of The Post American World). “Piore writes gracefully, and with deep insight, about complex scientific endeavors that could ease human suffering but are fraught with myriad ethical perils.” (Publishers Weekly).

Preserving the Promise: Improving the Culture of Biotech Investment
Explains why translation of biotech discovery into medicine succeeds so infrequently that it’s been dubbed the Valley of Death Uncovers specific decision-making strategies that more effectively align incentives, improving clinical and financial outcomes for investors, inventor/entrepreneurs, and patients Examines the critical, early stages of commercialization, where technology transfer offices and Angels act as gatekeepers to development, and where tension between short-term financial and long-term clinical aspirations sinks important technologies Deconstructs the forces driving biotech, recasts them in a proven conceptual framework, and offers practical guidance for making the system better. He is currently an associate professor at Lankenau Institute for Medical Research (LIMR) in Pennsylvania and an attending physician at the Lankenau Medical Center, where he specializes in medical oncology, runs an immunology research laboratory, and teaches in the Hematology/Oncology fellowship program. He co-created and serves as program executive for the Commercialization Acceleration Program (CAP) at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, a consultancy focused on the development and funding of technology-based start-up companies. Fishman holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and The University of Texas, teaches in the MBA program at Philadelphia University, and is an in-demand speaker at biotechnology development events around the United States, including recent engagements at Yale’s Healthcare Colloquium, Harvard’s i-lab, and the National Science Foundation.
Reviews
"Ordered for faculty at the University of Pennsylvania, no complaints."
"It is the only book that clearly explains the pitfalls that are unique to biotech investment: high technical complexity, high risk, a long timeline to return on investment (ROI), the extreme technical complexity and how to overcome them. It then explains how each of these Gaps works against biotech investors and gives examples of how some biotech innovators are making changes for the better."
"Dessain and Fishman have written a much needed and honest account of the challenges early stage biotechnology companies face when seeking funding. Preserving the Promise is written by two experienced professionals - one is a doctor, professor, and biotech company founder, and the other is a successful businessman who is an early stage angel investor. Funding for early companies is extremely small, compared to potential for success, especially for the ground-breaking science the is required to create high potential drugs for large populations."
"Dessain’s and Fisherman’s “Preserving the Promise – Improving the Culture of Biotech Investment” is easy to read and understand and ideally suited for anyone considering to participate in this game as well as those that are involved already. Compared to other industries there often are no well-defined objective criteria to judge a proposed product and this is further blurred by unknowns and high attrition rates lurking in the clinical development program. Preserving the Promise also looks at the roles of the Public Sector (Technology Transfer Offices) and Scientists (Inventors) and provide helpful insight into the different mechanisms, forces and sometimes lunacies at play."

The Patient Will See You Now: The Future of Medicine is in Your Hands
Instead, you could use your smartphone to get rapid test results from one drop of blood, monitor your vital signs both day and night, and use an artificially intelligent algorithm to receive a diagnosis without having to see a doctor, all at a small fraction of the cost imposed by our modern healthcare system. Much as the printing press took learning out of the hands of a priestly class, the mobile internet is doing the same for medicine, giving us unprecedented control over our healthcare. There's no doubt the path forward will be complicated: the medical establishment will resist these changes, and digitized medicine inevitably raises serious issues surrounding privacy. "In his new book, The Patient Will See You Now , Topol expertly builds upon his earlier path-finding work and explores how smartphone adoption, big data, new digital monitors of medically relevant information streams, ubiquitous computing, and larger networks are all combining to revolutionize health care far beyond what most now expect-with the exciting promise of lower costs and higher quality simultaneously. Coming from a world-class physician with a unique perspective on the rapidly changing nature of medicine, Topol's prescription for patient empowerment is a must read." "Dr. Eric Topol is uniquely positioned to map out a new era of democratized medicine-a time when each individual will not only have immediate access to all of their own medical data, but even generate much of it and play a principal role in their healthcare." "Dr. Eric Topol is a pioneer of the medicine of the future and the future is now! Despite his digital predilections, Topol is a humane and sympathetic observer of the plight of patients in our highly dysfunctional health care system. "Dr. Eric Topol [is] one of the nation's leading thinkers on the future of medicine." "[Topol] does a terrific job of laying out the immense potential of smartphones and iMedicine technologies to democratize medicine like never before.... Topol's writing style makes it very accessible for the lay person without any 'dumbing down' that would be a turnoff to health professionals. I can't think of a book that does a better job of projecting how the future of medicine will unfold and the critical role individuals will play in their own health (beyond the obvious)." "The mantra defining the future of medicine, according to physician and author Eric Topol, is 'Nothing about me without me.'. "If you want to feel as exhilarated, and maybe even as disoriented, as Marty [McFly, the fictional character in the movie Back to the Future II] did after fast-forwarding to 2015, read Dr. Topol's new book, The Patient Will See You Now . Building on themes he introduced in his last book, The Creative Destruction of Medicine, Topol, director of the Scripps Translational Science Institute, describes a health care world upended by digital technology - mostly to the benefit of patients. "Cardiologist Topol argues for taking down the boundaries separating the medical and digital worlds, boldly exploring how patients can shape the medicine of the future." "[Topol] forecasts and engineers a new chapter in medicine.... [He] foresees a future medical world profoundly bolstered by wireless Internet, where 'each individual will have all their own medical data and the computing power to process it.'". In this work about the changes afoot in the world of medical care, Topol, in this natural follow-up to his previous book, demonstrates the combination of intelligence and ambition that is apparent in his successful medical career.... Not content to simply critique the current system (though he does so thoroughly and convincingly), the author strides optimistically into the future of health care.... An expertly detailed, precisely documented exploration of the 'power of information and individualization' in health care." "In The Patient Will See You Now , Eric Topol unveils a visionary new world of patient empowerment through apps." "[Topol] envisions a new era where we could have...access to our own medical data and the tools to heal ourselves without being completely at the mercy of our doctors.... With an impressively well-researched cache of examples, he explains the various gadgets attached to smartphones to carry out complex medical examinations that cost pennies, the potential for using the same cheap technology in poor countries where expensive medical equipment cannot be deployed and the potential for the opening up of patient data - which could then be shared across the world through the Internet to find diagnoses and trends on an unprecedented scale." "In this extraordinary book, Topol has, in effect, provided us with a prescription for the future of medicine. "In The Patient Will See You Now , Dr. Eric Topol has helped to define a new era in healthcare when the role of the patient has evolved, empowered by the rapid adoption of digital health technologies. "Eric Topol's book focuses us on the most important development in health care today: putting the patient at the center of everything. "I have experienced Dr. Topol's healing touch as my personal physician after a 99% heart blockage, in his capacity as cardiology advisor to Men's Health magazine's 12 million readers, and as the visionary author of The Creative Destruction of Medicine .

"The Patient Will See You Now takes us on a wonderfully written tour including: the end of paternalism in health care (hooray!"
"But It must be part of an education of each person in USA to ask why our health care is so expensive, $3,000,000,000,000 or 18% of GNP but our outcomes are 37th in the world. At Cleveland Clinic, where he was their leader for 15 years, there was another associate named Caldwell Esselstyn, who also left, since he was suggesting a patient change their diet to avoid a procedure, Dr Topol left because he exposed the side effects of Vioxx, and suggested that Cleveland Clinic put their support of Merck ahead of the patient's interests."
"Or, "...smart, hyperconnected patients represent a serious challenge to medical paternalism." Still, the author's hiding a treasury of gemstones in the open, a knowledge that we as patients need to have, and he has refrained from making the book unreadable just to look more intelligent, seem more scholarly, too his peers. “Every patient is an expert in their own chosen field, namely themselves and their own life.” Or, “...doctors consider themselves the most evolved of the human species.”. "...the power of the people is greater than the people in power.”. "...we’re not just talking medical empowerment. We’re talking medical emancipation.""
"He sees the demise of the general hospital as we know it and more DIY medicine with the smartphone as the hub of wonderful new sensors will give ICU monitoring at home."

Understanding Anesthesia Equipment (Dorsch, Understanding Anesthesia Equipment)
The "Bible on Anesthesia Equipment" returns in a new Fifth Edition, and once again takes readers step-by-step through all the basic anesthesia equipment.
Reviews
"Dorsch and Dorsch's Understanding Anesthesia Equipment is simply the most thorough book on anesthesia equipment out there that I am aware of. You will find most of the general basics of anesthesia equipment in Barash's Clinical Anesthesia and even more summary books like Stoelting's Basics of Anesthesia) and Morgan & Mikhail's Clinical Anesthesiology. For a book that has been through so many revisions and costs well upward of a hundred bucks, I would expect some color photos and some better constructed color diagrams."
"Much of the charm of earlier editions (I own 1st and 4th) seems to be missing and there seems to be a reliance on manufacturer's supplied illustrations. This book will alow you to be competent to trouble shoot a system while waiting for BME to arrive,or for you to feel confident to swap a machine in the middle of a case."
"this is definitely the book to give you everything you need to understand anaesthesia equipment. its a "stay at home book" tho. big and heavy. the pages are not as easy to read since its all black and white and there's alot of material to read plus the pictures are not as many as i would have liked. but still a very good book. glad i got it for my residency. always on top of my info because of it."
"Fundamental in anesthesiologist library to understand the equipment."
"this is a great reference text for anesthesia AASAT's like myself."
"This book is a good source if you want to understand how the anesthesia equipment developed."
"recommend it for others to buy, especially for certified anesthesia assistants and crtified anesthesia technicians."

"I read articles, explored websites, perused product information from various hemp oil producers and queried folks on facebook. But thankfully, while reading conflicting reviews of different CBD products on Amazon, I came across this book. The book has just enough scientific and medical info to explain how and why CBD works as medicine; this gave me confidence that hemp oil is not just a fad, placebo or snake oil. While the book would clearly be useful for those in the nursing profession, it is equally important and accessible to the lay reader, and I fear you might lose many potential readers who assume that it's a book written primarily for nurses. Also, I hope that you will decide to offer the book in a print version as well; some folks don't have access to e-readers; and some of us just prefer having a hard to copy to underline and highlight and reference repeatedly; it's just easier in "book" form!"
"After reading this very comprehensive book I have been enormously pleased to share it with many of my friends, especially those who didn't know much about hemp oil."
