Bel Canto (P.S.)
As in Patchett’s other novels, including Truth & Beauty and The Magician’s Assistant , the author’s lyrical prose and lucid imagination make Bel Canto a captivating story of strength and frailty, love and imprisonment, and an inspiring tale of transcendent romance. But what begins as a panicked, life-threatening scenario slowly evolves into something quite different, a moment of great beauty, as terrorists and hostages forge unexpected bonds, and people from different continents become compatriots.
Reviews
"I loved so many things about Bel Canto, but my favorites were the many different ways Roxane's unique voice and its effect on people are described."
"Great book!"
"Delicious, voluptuous, with a deep understanding of humanity."
"I love this book so much - I actually bought this one for a friend."
"This book is set in a South American country and is about a failed kidnapping of the president of that country at a reception given in his honor (which he does not attend). Overall, I can recommend this book, but there are other books I like much better."
"Roxanne is the greatest soprano of all times, Carmen is incredibly smart and picks up writing like a sponge, Gen knows dozens of languages, Ishmael learns to play chess at a high level just by watching two people play, Cesar can sing perhaps better even than Roxanne."
"The characters are well drawn and believable and act in ways that."
"I tried to like this book, it was so slow moving and BORING..........The Pro and the Con was the characters."

With the omniscience of magic realism, Ann Patchett flits in and out of the hearts and psyches of hostage and terrorist alike, and in doing so reveals a profound, shared humanity. Her voice is suitably lyrical, melodic, full of warmth and compassion. Never had he thought, never once, that such a woman existed, one who stood so close to God that God's own voice poured from her. It was as if the voice came from the center part of the earth and by the sheer effort and diligence of her will she had pulled it up through the dirt and rock and through the floorboards of the house, up into her feet, where it pulled through her, reaching, lifting, warmed by her, and then out of the white lily of her throat and straight to God in heaven. Ultimately, of course, something has to give, even in a novel so imbued with the rich imaginative potential of magic realism.

State of Wonder: A Novel
“Expect miracleswhen you read Ann Patchett’s fiction.”— New YorkTimes Book Review. But first she must locate Dr. Anneck Swenson, a renowned gynecologist who has spent years looking at the reproductive habits of a local tribe where women can conceive well into their middle ages and beyond. Eccentric and notoriously tough, Swenson is paid to find the key to this longstanding childbearing ability by the same company for which Dr. Singh works. In finding her former mentor, Dr. Singh must face her own disappointments and regrets, along with the jungle’s unforgiving humidity and insects, making State of Wonder a multi-layered atmospheric novel that is hard to put down. Emotional, vivid, and a work of literature that will surely resonate with readers in the weeks and months to come, State of Wonder truly is a thing of beauty and mystery, much like the Amazon jungle itself. AP: It’s a wink and a nod to Werner Herzog and his brilliant Amazon film “Fitzcarraldo” which opens at the opera house in Manaus where the aforementioned scene takes place. AP: When I first started writing this book, I came downstairs one night and found my husband listening to “Horowitz at Carnegie Hall”. Patchett (Bel Canto) is a master storyteller who has an entertaining habit of dropping ordinary people into extraordinary and exotic circumstances to see what they're made of. In this expansive page-turner, Marina Singh, a big pharma researcher, is sent by her married boss/lover to the deepest, darkest corner of the Amazon to investigate the death of her colleague, Anders Eckman, who had been dispatched to check on the progress of the incommunicado Dr. Annick Swenson, a rogue scientist on the cusp of developing a fertility drug that could rock the medical profession (and reap enormous profits). After arriving in Manaus, Marina travels into her own heart of darkness, finding Dr. Swenson's camp among the Lakashi, a gentle but enigmatic tribe whose women go on bearing children until the end of their lives. As Marina settles in, she goes native, losing everything she had held on to so dearly in her prescribed Midwestern life, shedding clothing, technology, old loves, and modern medicine in order to find herself. Patchett's fluid prose dissolves in the suspense of this out-there adventure, a juggernaut of a trip to the crossroads of science, ethics, and commerce that readers will hate to see end.
Reviews
"I have read other works by Patchett and this lives up to the best of them."
"This book is a great escape!"
"Will our main character die of a fever or step on a poisonous snake? In fact, my mom and I talked about the book and speculated about what would happen next. Set in the heart of Brazil and then deep in the Amazon jungle, the book gives a vivid and beautifully written description of place. First of all, would a pharma company invest that much time and money on a project and get no status reports, not a one? Secondly, what the strange and elusive Dr. Swenson was investigating seemed way beyond my ability to suspend disbelief."
"The lesson for me was that just because I did not like one book by a particular author it's not a reason to never read another book by the same author."
"The next paragraphs, leading to the moment when she informs his wife, are slow and excrutiatingly paced, which accentuates the impact, so that I almost had to put the book down when it came to the moment that they were going to tell Karen Eckman that her husband was dead. The transplant of a person from a northern climate to the humid, insect-run, verdancy of a tropical jungle is something I've experienced first hand, and though the Amazon is far beyond any jungle I've ever visited in India, the experience was remarkably familiar. The truth just happens to be wilder than you ever knew. Which is perhaps the genius of the book, because the truth is that life is a completely different thing in the fertile, exploding-with-life jungle, and the degrees one needs to shift to understand it are not unlike the degrees between science and fantasy in this novel."
"A far-fetched novel with an open-ended, lots of questions left unanswered, ending."

The Tempest (Signet Classics)
The Signet Classics edition of William Shakespeare's fantastical play that combines elements of tragedy and comedy. PROSPERO, the right Duke of Milan. MIRANDA, his daughter. ALONSO, King of Naples. SEBASTIAN, his brother. ANTONIO, Prospero's brother, the usurping Duke of Milan. FERDINAND, son to the King of Naples. GONZALO, an honest old councillor. ADRIAN and FRANCISCO, lords. TRINCULO, a jester. STEPHANO, a drunken butler. MASTER, of a ship. BOATSWAIN. MARINERS. CALIBAN, a savage and deformed slave. ARIEL, an airy spirit. IRIS, CERES, JUNO, spirits commanded by Prospero. playing roles of NYMPHS, REAPERS. Tend to th'master's whistle.- Blow, till thou burst thy wind, if room enough. You are a counsellor: if you can command these elements to silence, and work the peace of the present, we will not hand a rope more: use your authority. If you cannot, give thanks you have lived so long, and make yourself ready in your cabin for the mischance of the hour, if it so hap.- Cheerly, good hearts!- Out of our way, I say. GONZALO I have great comfort from this fellow: methinks he hath no drowning mark upon him: his complexion is perfect gallows. Stand fast, good Fate, to his hanging: make the rope of his destiny our cable, for our own doth little advantage. GONZALO I'll warrant him for drowning, though the ship were no stronger than a nutshell and as leaky as an unstanched wench. This wide-chopped rascal: would thou mightst lie drowning, the washing of ten tides! GONZALO Now would I give a thousand furlongs of sea for an acre of barren ground: long heath, brown furze, anything. MIRANDA If by your art, my dearest father, you have. Put the wild waters in this roar, allay them. The sky, it seems, would pour down stinking pitch, But that the sea, mounting to th'welkin's cheek, Dashes the fire out. Had I been any god of power, I would. Have sunk the sea within the earth, or ere. It should the good ship so have swallowed, and. The fraughting souls within her. The direful spectacle of the wreck, which touched. The very virtue of compassion in thee, I have with such provision in mine art. So safely ordered that there is no soul -. No, not so much perdition as an hair. Betid to any creature in the vessel. Which thou heard'st cry, which thou saw'st sink. MIRANDA You have often. Begun to tell me what I am, but stopped. And left me to a bootless inquisition, Concluding 'Stay: not yet.'. PROSPERO The hour's now come, The very minute bids thee ope thine ear: Obey, and be attentive. PROSPERO My brother and thy uncle, called Antonio -. I pray thee, mark me - that a brother should. Be so perfidious - he whom next thyself. Of all the world I loved, and to him put. The manage of my state, as at that time. Through all the signories it was the first, And Prospero the prime duke, being so reputed. In dignity, and for the liberal arts. Without a parallel; those being all my study, The government I cast upon my brother. And to my state grew stranger, being transported. And rapt in secret studies. PROSPERO Being once perfected how to grant suits, How to deny them, who t'advance and who. To trash for over-topping, new created. The creatures that were mine, I say, or changed 'em, Or else new formed 'em; having both the key. Of officer and office, set all hearts i'th'state. To what tune pleased his ear, that now he was. The ivy which had hid my princely trunk. And sucked my verdure out on't.- Thou attend'st. not. PROSPERO I pray thee, mark me: I, thus neglecting worldly ends, all dedicated. To closeness and the bettering of my mind. With that, which but by being so retired, O'er-prized all popular rate, in my false brother. Awaked an evil nature, and my trust, Like a good parent, did beget of him. A falsehood in its contrary, as great. As my trust was, which had indeed no limit, A confidence sans bound. He being thus lorded, Not only with what my revenue yielded, But what my power might else exact: like one. Who having into truth, by telling of it, Made such a sinner of his memory. To credit his own lie, he did believe. He was indeed the duke, out o'th'substitution. And executing th'outward face of royalty. With all prerogative: hence his ambition growing -. Dost thou hear? Me - poor man - my library. Was dukedom large enough: of temporal royalties. He thinks me now incapable. Confederates -. So dry he was for sway - wi'th'King of Naples. To give him annual tribute, do him homage, Subject his coronet to his crown, and bend. The dukedom yet unbowed - alas, poor Milan -. To most ignoble stooping. MIRANDA I should sin. To think but nobly of my grandmother: Good wombs have borne bad sons. This King of Naples, being an enemy. To me inveterate, hearkens my brother's suit, Which was, that he, in lieu o'th'premises. Of homage, and I know not how much tribute, Should presently extirpate me and mine. Out of the dukedom, and confer fair Milan, With all the honours, on my brother: whereon, A treacherous army levied, one midnight. Fated to th'purpose, did Antonio open. The gates of Milan, and i'th'dead of darkness. The ministers for th'purpose hurried thence. Me and thy crying self. PROSPERO Hear a little further, And then I'll bring thee to the present business. Which now's upon's: without the which, this story. Were most impertinent. In few, they hurried us aboard a barque, Bore us some leagues to sea, where they prepared. A rotten carcass of a butt, not rigged, Nor tackle, sail, nor mast: the very rats. Instinctively have quit it. Thou didst smile, Infusèd with a fortitude from heaven, When I have decked the sea with drops full salt, Under my burden groaned, which raised in me. An undergoing stomach, to bear up. Against what should ensue. Some food we had, and some fresh water, that. A noble Neapolitan, Gonzalo, Out of his charity - who being then appointed. Master of this design - did give us, with. Rich garments, linens, stuffs and necessaries, Which since have steaded much. So, of. his gentleness, Knowing I loved my books, he furnished me. From mine own library with volumes that. I prize above my dukedom. Here in this island we arrived, and here. Have I, thy schoolmaster, made thee more profit. Than other princes can that have more time. For vainer hours, and tutors not so careful. PROSPERO Know thus far forth: By accident most strange, bountiful Fortune -. Now my dear lady - hath mine enemies. Brought to this shore: and by my prescience. I find my zenith doth depend upon. A most auspicious star, whose influence. If now I court not, but omit, my fortunes. Will ever after droop. 'Tis a good dullness, And give it way: I know thou canst not choose.- Miranda. Come away, servant, come. PROSPERO Hast thou, spirit, Performed to point the tempest that I bade thee? I boarded the king's ship: now on the beak, Now in the waist, the deck, in every cabin, I flamed amazement: sometime I'd divide. And burn in many places; on the topmast, The yards and bowsprit would I flame distinctly, Then meet and join. Jove's lightning, the precursors. O'th'dreadful thunderclaps, more momentary. And sight-outrunning were not; the fire and cracks. Of sulphurous roaring, the most mighty Neptune. Seem to besiege and make his bold waves tremble, Yea, his dread trident shake. ARIEL Not a soul. But felt a fever of the mad and played. Some tricks of desperation. All but mariners. Plunged in the foaming brine and quit the vessel, Then all afire with me: the king's son, Ferdinand, With hair up-staring - then like reeds, not hair -. Was the first man that leaped; cried 'Hell is empty. And all the devils are here.'. ARIEL Not a hair perished: On their sustaining garments not a blemish, But fresher than before: and, as thou bad'st me, In troops I have dispersed them 'bout the isle. The king's son have I landed by himself, Whom I left cooling of the air with sighs. In an odd angle of the isle, and sitting, His arms in this sad knot.

"For those not already familiar with the play, it is the only one of Shakespeare plays without a recognizable source for the main plot, although there is documentation for many details in the voyage literature of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth century, especially the earlier years of the Virginia colony. A compendium, "The Complete Pelican Shakespeare," with revised texts, was eventually issued as a fat hardcover, and the whole series was then re-issued in individual paperbacks. They otherwise retain the basic structure of Publisher's Note, the General Editors on "The Theatrical World" and "The Texts of Shakespeare," an introduction by the volume editor, a Note on the Text," and the text with vocabulary footnotes (embracing slightly more complicated issues, such as puns). There is yet another possible source of confusion, a completely independent "Penguin Shakespeare" series, apparently issued mainly in the U.K., and much more elaborate (closer in format to the American Signet Shakespeare and recent Folger Library editions). Although standard practices in editing Shakespeare changed over the almost fifty years separating the initiations of the two Pelican series, these changes are of remarkably little relevance to "The Tempest," which appeared in the First Folio, and only the First Folio, and in a fairly clean text to boot. Here and elsewhere, Frye's text occasionally "corrects" some of the Folio's stage directions -- which are insufficient by modern standards, and often confusingly placed -- and normalizes the spelling (the Pelican practice), but is otherwise comfortingly unremarkable, with no effort to make Shakespeare say what he ought to have said, instead of what the sixteenth and seventeenth-century texts in fact say."
"My sister purchased this edition for her class, and it has greatly helped her to make sense of the writing, rather than to have her mind boggled."
"While I would not suggest this as your first read in Shakespeare, I would still call it a 'must read' when studying Shakespeare."
"This makes me ENJOY the story, PASS the class and save TIME."
"Each Folger edition is constructed to Shakespeare's play is on one side withe explanation of terms, sites, meanings, etc."
"This book was not the exact edition of the book that I needed for class but the only differences were the page numbers and the cover, which is not a big deal."
"The Norton Critical Editions are pretty much universally loved, and for good reason - informative, detailed criticism, well-edited and presented."
"This is one of the poorest cheap Kindle editions of a Shakespeare play I've downloaded."

Hamilton: The Revolution
Miranda, along with Jeremy McCarter, a cultural critic and theater artist who was involved in the project from its earliest stages--"since before this was even a show," according to Miranda--traces its development from an improbable performance at the White House to its landmark opening night on Broadway six years later. This glorious, oversize testament to the multiple Tony Award-winning musical Hamilton is a joy to anyone who loves the sound track or who has been lucky enough to score tickets to the show.
Reviews
"I've read the Chernow biography, listened to the cast recording non-stop (ha) since September, and been an avid follower of Lin's tweets, Facebook posts, interviews, #Ham4Ham shows, and Genius annotations. Among other delights, it includes: the full libretto of this sung-through (and rapped-through) show, with extensive annotations from LMM that give new insights, meaning, and historical context to the words that you might already know by heart; more than 30 essays about the cast members, the production team, the creative process, and the facts of Hamilton's life; copies of relevant historical documents referenced in the show; pages from LMM's notebooks with early drafts and outlines; and a stunningly beautiful array of production photographs, cast portraits, and backstage candids. There is the American Revolution that is brought to life in this show, and there is the revolution of the show itself - "a musical that changes the way that Broadway sounds, that alters who gets to tell the story of our founding, that lets us glimpse the new, more diverse America rushing our way.""
"Giddy with excitement, I pulled back the packaging tab and inside was this glorious tome. Looking forward to enveloping myself in this Hamilton word and pictures story, that is until I actually get to see the show... A girl can dream :-). Edited to add: and the dream is almost a reality... Used this gorgeous book to deliver surprise tickets to my niece who turned 18 today."
"It's not a love that's died down over the past few weeks - indeed, it's only continued to grow - so it's no surprise that I picked up Hamilton: A Revolution, which tells the story of the writing of the musical, as well as providing Miranda's annotations for all of the show's songs and lyrics. The fact that the book alternates between short essays and songs from the show allows the pictures to nicely complement the text at all times, giving the reader a sense of how the show might play out, and giving us the chance to pair images with the songs that so many of us already know by heart. More than that, though, they give you a sense of the care that went into the staging of the show; from the set to the costuming, from the insanely detailed props to the intricate stage layout, the book conveys the fact that the show is every bit as carefully crafted and intricately constructed as the album and the songs. Even with all the time I've spent on Genius reading the show's annotations can't replace the glee of reading the lyrics in a beautifully made book, and getting to savor all of Miranda's wonderful prose - the wordplay, the historical allusions, the shout-outs to old school rap and Broadway staples, all of it."
"It is not in Kindle format; it's just photocopies of double columned pages that doesn't fit the screen and is very hard to read."

"James Baldwin proclaimed, "never before in the entire history of the American theater had so much of the truth of black people's lives been seen on stage." They are so rich and powerful that over the years they have been portrayed only by some of the biggest names in the African-American theatrical community: Sidney Poiter, Ruby Dee, Esther Rolle, Ossie Davis, Phylicia Rashad, Audra McDonald."
"The way that Lorraine Hansberry is able to capture the essence of the black struggle during this time is indescribable."
"Re read - and still relevant today --- for many families in lower economic struggles."
"This classic play from the 1950's really isn't a window into the past so much as a rather startling realization that those times and the current times in many ways have not changed much for many people in the black communities."
"Very good as a period piece, though it is developed to be used effectively at any period of time."
"Because a retired professor at church offered several weeks discussing the play before a Play Makers Production in Chapel Hill, NC, I put the play on my Kindle."
"Purchased for my granddaughter."
"A classic that Every person of Beautiful Color should have in their library."

Chasing China; A Daughter's Quest for Truth
As she follows the red thread back through her motherland, she is enamored by the history and culture of her heritage, strengthening her resolve to find the truth of her beginnings, even as Chinese officials struggle to keep it buried. Kay Bratt's haunting tale of agirl coming of age and new found discoveries is a book that will forever remainwith me. Chasing China is the beautiful, romantic, and exciting story ofa woman whose search for the truth about her past leads her on an adventure ofself-discovery. Through these pages you will see what I saw, hear what I heard and hopefully feel what I felt on my frequent walks through the halls of the building that housed children yearning for a family to call their own.
Reviews
"It was about Mia, a young college student who had been adopted from China. She always wanted to know about her birth family, and her adoptive family loved her enough to let her travel to China to try to find her parents."
"This is a story of a young woman who was adopted from China."
"This touching and uplifting novel is largely based on truth itself, the result of author Kay Bratt’s recent four years in China, where she became deeply involved in trying to improve the conditions of the children in an orphanage in a city not far from Shanghai, children whose stories form a somber backdrop to this story of love. The book’s heroine, Mia, was adopted from a Chinese orphanage by a fine middle-class American family, becoming the little sister for three older brothers, a little girl eagerly sought."
"In addition to many readers having strong feelings about a country that will poison the milk/formula they give their own children, and that will ship poisoned pet food to other countries causing beloved pets to die painfully, I realize this paints people with a broad brush, so apologies for feeling so strongly about poisoned infants/children, and poisoned pets, as I know not everyone in China had a part in this. There were rays of hope as people tried to help in any little way they could, and the workers who had contact with the children did the best they could, under the restrictions they had and the too-watchful eyes of people in positions of power."
"Compelling story, excellent book, totally absorbing tale, with interesting believable characters and a wonderful description of China and it's way of life."
"I can not imagine how hard can it be to wonder about your birth parents and trying to find out why they gave you away."

The playscript for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child was originally released as a 'special rehearsal edition' alongside the opening of Jack Thorne's play in London's West End in summer 2016. When Albus hatches a plot to go back in time to save the life of Cedric Diggory—what Albus views as the biggest mistake his father made—time becomes distorted and Harry is left to examine his own life, his relationship with his son, and how love can sometimes be much more complicated than it seems. This is an interesting extension of the "Harry Potter" universe, but readers should go into it knowing that it's its own beast. Rowling didn't write it (much to the fury and vitriol of many fans), and it is in script form, so it loses some of the magic that won over millions of readers back when it all began.

"I read the books 2-3 times per year since I was a child. These books are a part of me, I've named my children after characters in these books. I have waited for this book like the rest of you. I get more of a harry potter vibe from the fantastic beasts trailer than this entire book. I think the best way to go into reading this and saving yourself from despair is to read it as a fanfic and not the true works of rowling."
"I keep wondering if there's a therapy group where all the disgruntled fans can congragate and weep together. The entire 7 book series was about friendship, love and loyalty, and Harry knew that; and most importantly, knew that's what made him different from V. You're telling me, he, Ron and Herm didn't continue to live and instil those values in their children? Harry wouldn't have choosen work over time with his family, which after all he'd been through WAS ALL HE EVER WANTED. This new book is the worst kind of trash, the one that destroys the soul of our hero. Also, what they did to calm, measured, quirky, wise Dumbledore, making him a weepy, rude mess, who spoke in cliches, issuing a completely unnecessary "apology" to why Harry was at the Dursleys, when Dumbledore had already apologized profusely for that in HP5 AND severely told off the Dursleys in HP6 for their abusive behavior! And what a weak, floppy mess Harry was during the fight scene?!"
"I am horrifically obsessed with these books, for the past 19 years (tattoos, pet names, my adult apartment covered in maps and memorabilia - you get the point). I sighed, scowled, and groaned mercilessly while reading, and eventually completely gave up trying to understand even a semblance of what was going on in this story. This is NOT cannon, nor something I can physically or mentally endure sitting on my bookshelves next to what was the light of my childhood (and early adulthood if I'm honest). **SPOILER WARNING**. So many issues: the timeturner now apparently having the ability to go back decades, and create butterfly effect implications; Hermione's visage as a cold, cruel, DADA professor; Harry's Hermione-like myopic focus on his work, above his family; Ron - as a whole; too many others to list without losing my cool once again."

Briggs will face competition next year when Pevear and Volokhonsky release their new translation, but for now, this is the most readable translation on the market.

"I have, at various times, tried to read four different editions of War & Peace (Penguin, Signet, Barnes & Noble, and now this) and by far, this is the best edition I've seen. This edition is everything I was looking for in a copy of War & Peace and I cannot recommend it highly enough. When reading the Signet edition, I found myself using google translate to understand sentences or phrases left in the book in French. Other editions translated most of the French but left phrases here and there untranslated and in the text, without footnotes. Cons: Compared to editions that translate all the French, reading in the footnotes can be burdensome."
"Approaching War and Peace feels like a monumental task. Set against the backdrop of Napoleonic Europe, the story follows three main Russian families as they navigate the early years of the nineteenth century. Our main protagonist is Pierre Bezukhov, a mirror for Tolstoy himself. The Bolkonskys are right and proper with an autocratic father from one of the lower levels of Hell. But honestly the main characters that the book follows number about 5 to 10. Aside from Pierre Bezukhov, there is Prince Andrei Bolkonsky, Princess Marya Bolkonskaya, Countess Natalya Rostova, Count Nicholas Rostov, and Helene Kuragina. Perhaps the German word, 'Gesamtkunstwerk' - total work of art - should be applied to literature. The notes and translations of the French were all hyperlinked which made things easy enough to read and follow."
"I most definitely recommend this book for readers who enjoy classic works."
