The Logic of Chemical Synthesis
Although the book deals almost exclusively with molecules of biological origin, which are ideal for developing the fundamental ideas of multistep synthetic design because of their architectural complexity and variety, the approach taken is fully applicable to other types of carbon-based structures. Systematic retrosynthetic analysis and the concurrent use of multiple independent strategies to guide problem solving greatly simplify the task of devising a new synthesis.
Reviews
"Part II (150 pages) consists of many examples of complex syntheses with reaction schemes, which were designed using retrosynthetic analysis, but without description or analysis of he retrosynthetic analysis."
"Dr Corey is the truth, an so was his books."
"While the latter discusses the total synthesis of some of the most fascinating molecules from all over the world, The Logic of Chemical Synthesis is a collection of E. J. Corey's (winner of 1990 Nobel Prize in Chemistry) total syntheses. Part 2 focuses on how to apply the synthesis strategies from Part 1 in synthetic methods and pathways for the construction of many complex target molecules. The book assumes knowledge of at least one course in organic syntheses which emphasize on synthetic strategies and named reactions."
"Students who start with this text are often confused when approaching a problem in a more realistic (cost concerned) environment and are confused as to what should be the first attempt at a particular transformation--Corey often tells what worked without mentioning what else was tried first, suggesting to the beginning student that the route ultimately used was the first choice, which often is not the case."
"This is an extraordinarily well-written book which may be used as a learning tool for the starting Organic synthetic chemist, who, with no doubt, will enjoy himself by going through it."
"An essential handbook for the synthetic organic chemist."

Organic Synthesis: The Disconnection Approach
One approach to organic synthesis is retrosynthetic analysis With this approach a chemist will start with the structure of their target molecule and progressively cut bonds to create simpler molecules Reversing this process gives a synthetic route to the target molecule from simpler starting materials This disconnection approach to synthesis is now a fundamental part of every organic synthesis course Organic Synthesis The Disconnection Approach 2nd Edition introduces this important technique to help students to design their own organic syntheses There are forty chapters those on the synthesis of given types of molecules alternate with strategy chapters in which the methods just learnt are placed in a wider context The synthesis chapters cover many ways of making each type of molecule starting with simple aromatic and aliphatic compounds with one functional group and progressing to molecules with many functional groups The strategy chapters cover questions of selectivity protection stereochemistry and develop more advanced thinking via reagents specifically designed for difficult problems Examples are drawn from pharmaceuticals agrochemicals natural products pheromones perfumery and flavouring compounds dyestuffs monomers and intermediates used in more advanced synthetic work Reasons for wishing to synthesise each compound are given This second edition has been fully revised and updated with a modern look Recent examples and techniques are included and illustrated additional material has been added to take the student to the level required by the sequel Organic Synthesis Strategy and Control Several chapters contain extensive new material based on courses that the authors give to chemists in the pharmaceutical industry Organic Synthesis The Disconnection Approach 2nd edition provides a full course in retrosynthetic analysis for chemistry and biochemistry students and a refresher for organic chemists working in industry and academia.
Reviews
"If you are buying this book to learn the "Disconnection Approach," I highly recommend that you also buy the companion book: "Workbook for ORGANIC SYNTHESIS The Disconnection Approach (2nd ed.).""
"My criticisms would be: (1) Rather too terse at some points; a few more words would make it flow more smoothly; (2) As the book progresses, there are increasing references to "Strategy and Control", and more annoyingly, the workbook; the text is not entirely self contained, and I should not have to purchase the workbook for simple clarification; (3) The index is really poor."
"I leArned quite a bit."
"Excellent text book and valuable tool for organic chemistry."
"This book was in perfect condition and like new."

Best Reactions in Organic Chemistry

The Art of Writing Reasonable Organic Reaction Mechanisms
Worked problems are included in the discussion of each mechanism, and "common error alerts" are scattered throughout the text to warn readers about pitfalls and misconceptions that bedevil students. The author provides the student a Web site that includes the detailed mechanisms for every problem in the book, each of which includes explanation and commentary, and the answer set, when printed, exceeds 250 pages! The next advanced course I teach will use The Art of Writing Reasonable Reaction Mechanisms with the goal that students will be able to posit a plausible mechanism for any new reaction that they encounter. The Art of Writing Reasonable Reaction Mechanisms might just change the way you do things." "The Art of Writing Reasonable Organic Reaction Mechanisms has an entirely different scope, dedicated to teaching the application of first principles to the construction of organic mechanisms. The author provides the student a Web site that includes the detailed mechanisms for every problem in the book … . "This text shows how to write a reasonable mechanism for an organic chemical transformation. "Robert Grossman in his book attempts to familiarize the student with the awesome power of reaction mechanisms … .
