Find Best Price at Amazon"The pet pig (from the last book) seems to have more privileges than Greg, Grandpa moves in with the Heffleys, Rodrick gets a job at the ice cream parlor, and a good chunk of the book is devoted to Greg’s weeklong school trip to an old fashioned farm. I found myself smiling as I read through this book, and Greg’s vision of the future- telling a drone that he didn’t want mayonnaise on his burger- had me laughing out loud. And Greg is downright insightful when he says that older people’s recollections of the “good old days” are not always as accurate as they think. Greg might be stuck in middle school forever, but that just means that we can continue to appreciate his experiences during those awkward years between childhood and adolescence."

"With that part taken care of my son was able to open the book and build his first game in one evening without any help. As a programmer myself I understand all too well that there is a difference between building something with direct instruction and understanding enough to create on your own. Maybe neither my oldest son or any of his siblings will work in computer programming as adults, but I know that the ability to understand logic and reasoning will benefit them no matter what they do."
"Each kid has done several projects, taking breaks between each one to expand on the game they've made or create a game of their own based on the principles they've learned."

You'll also learn essential building techniques like how to use beams, gears, and connector blocks effectively in your own designs. The EXPLOR3R, a wheeled vehicle that uses sensors to navigate around a room and follow lines The FORMULA EV3 RACE CAR, a streamlined remote-controlled race car ANTY, a six-legged walking creature that adapts its behavior to its surroundings SK3TCHBOT, a robot that lets you play games on the EV3 screen The SNATCH3R, a robotic arm that can autonomously find, grab, lift, and move the infrared beacon LAVA R3X, a humanoid robot that walks and talks. Each chapter contains several short challenges, dubbed "discoveries," which are cleverly accompanied by a legend: whimsical gear wheels represent the estimated amount of building time; tiny Microsoft Windows-esque blocks show the expected level of programming expertise; and a small clock estimates the length of time it should take to solve the challenge. The size, advanced vocabulary, and organization of the book evokes a science or physics textbook, which is warranted due to the amount of complex and detailed programming information contained within.

"As to the educational version vs the home version..... The educational packs has all of the motors and sensors of the home version with two exceptions: the remote control sensor and related beacon. There may be a few add'l pieces that we'll need in the future to build all of the projects in this book, but we are 1/4 the way thru and haven't found them. The author has also kindly responded to specific questions (relating to education vs home versions), and has been quite helpful."
"Outstanding book I love the paper edition but also bought the Kindle edition too!"
"My grandson has built just about every project in the book and he loves it."
"I bought the book (and the Mindstorms kit) for my grandsons, but first I wanted to build one of the robots in the book and to do some programming for it in case I needed to help my grandsons with the versions they build."
"The book includes 132 practice modules spread throughout the chapters which allow for an iterative process of learning. My two sons and I (ages 9 and 11) are separately going through the book and practice/design modules with each of us tracking our progress on a tracking sheet."
"The book gives you all the information you need to understand the LabView environment and each of the basic programming blocks."
"Fantastic and thorough book."

Find Best Price at Amazon"That sort of thinking led me to believe that he was ready for the next step: learning to program a computer so he could make his own games. It wasn't that I couldn't figure out the programming language, it was that I was bereft of ideas as to what to do with it that would make interesting projects for Bowen that wouldn't bore him to death. The projects immediately always did something fun, and half of the project would involve drawing rather than coding (which is about right when it comes to modern game implementation). What was interesting to me was that Bowen didn't learn so much from the book's coding, but from finding "bugs" in the resultant game behavior and modifying the project so the game behaved the way he wanted it to! But for $7.12, this is a great introduction to programming, doesn't require a powerful computer, and has shown Bowen that the only thing more addictive than a video game is writing one."
"He felt great about being able to make games, and he even was able to tweak the games to his style."
"My students have taken this and added to it and adapted it to what they want to learn."
"My brother is gamer and i got him this book so he can make his own Hanes i won’t have to buy anymore."
"son loves scratch and now loves this book."
"It may be that teaching a child to program requires a reference point like this book and a patient, experienced adult to step through; I am not quite confident of how much the progress was due to me and/or the book; nevertheless, the book gave me confidence in teaching and guiding a child. There are two things I did not like about the book: the spiral binding and the difficulty in standing the book up (at an angle) to look at and use it while teaching/learning."
"Awesome second book about coding games in Scratch, if you already have one like Woodcock's one."
