Reviews
"Also, the book description says "text only", which is strange, because this copy has tons of the original illustrations in full-color (I'll try to post pictures soon)."
"This is a beautiful paperback box set of the Narnia collection, that so many of us grew up with."
"Peter, Edmund, Susan, and Lucy, a year after leaving Narnia, are on their way back to school when they are suddenly, magically, pulled to what they eventually realize are the ruins of Cair Paravel."
"For example, The Horse and His Boy is a longer book in the series, but the publisher made the font smaller as to make the book similar in size to The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe."
"But you can just read the books in whatever order you want, you don't have to pay attention to the numbers on the spine."
"I've always wanted to read this series so I was excited to get it in."
"Having been living among "intellectual" bachelors, the story, as a true one (1952) was fascinating. They said very little about them, but marvelled at how this Englishman managed to mesmerize American children (the heathens LOL) as well as those in the UK. This series of 7, written from 1950-57, are page turners for this old "senior" reader. I cheated and looked at the last 2 pages of the last book, and one realizes the effect which his life with his American wife, and love, must have had on this author."
"The books are such a classic that you get something new with each reading, and as you grow in years."

Best Twain, Mark

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (The Classic Collection)
This giant work, in addition to entertaining boys and girls for generations, has defined the first-person novel in America and continues to demand study, inspire reverence, and stir controversy in our time. Mark Twain is the pen name of Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835 - 1910).
Reviews
"Just the comraderie between a young white boy and a black slave is incredible to think of for back then."
"At the same time, Mark Twain gives a sharp description of life along the Mississippi river, the racism, ignorance, violence, unscrupulousness , naïveté as well as generosity and piety displayed by the people living along its shores."
"This is only about the 20th time I've read it since high school, so that should give a pretty good idea of what I think of it."
"The Adventures of Tom Sawyer: Unabridged and IllustratedThe Adventures of Tom Sawyer that I bought from amazon.com is a paperback Piccadilly Classics (Unabridged and Illustrated) edition, written by Mark Twain (Samuel Langborne Clemens) and illustrated by T. Williams, and published by Piccadilly Books, Ltd. copyright 2010. I am VERY pleased with this edition's keeping to the Mark Twain's original manuscript and the use of (from my understanding...and by the looks of it) wonderfully-used original illustrations."
"Campfire Classics do preserve some of the original voice of the author in the text, and because of the classics chosen, are a good incentive to read."
"I downloaded this for my eight-year-old daughter after her interest was piqued by the stage version, and was delighted to discover that she found the unabridged version to be as enjoyable and accessible as I remembered from my own youth."
"I thought the book dragged just a bit for me during the lengthy discussion and process of Huck and Tom planning and executing Jim's escape."

Best Dickens, Charles

Bleak House
[Read by Simon Vance (-aka- Robert Whitfield)]. Charles Dickens, at the height of his creative powers in this great work, pursues two great themes: the murky institutional fog that darkens and cripples all of England, symbolized by the endless litigation of the Jarndyce vs. Jarndyce case in the High Court of Chancery (which is slowly devouring an inheritance in legal costs), and the familiar Dickensian concern with the capricious treatment and maltreatment of children as exemplified by the pitiful castoff Jo and the overindulged Harold Skimkpole. With a motley cast of characters to challenge the skill of any narrator, his brilliant dramatizations range from a homeless street urchin to an arrogant barrister, from a canny old windbag to a high-minded heroine who deserves the happy ending Dickens affords her.
Reviews
"BEWARE the text font size is about 4 point, that's the size of the legal on your average medication advertisement."
"Great story, great cast of characters, I plan on looking at it again, love these kinds of good stories."
"I had always thought this would be very complicated, hard to read, not worthwhile----but was I pleasantly surprised when I finally "tackled" it and found it uncomplicated and very enjoyable reading."
"Young David is then forced from his home, loving mother and faithful nurse when he is sent first to a harsh boarding school and then to factory work in London."
"Over long by about 70000 words, David Copperfield nonetheless packs a number of punches along the way."
"A beautiful filmed telling of this brilliant novel, possibly the best by Dickens thanks to its many believable characters (the flat vs. round discussion aside) and slowly building, suspenseful plot that manages to be both tragic and comic."
"David Copperfield is a narrative piece written in the voice of an autobiography that takes you on a colorful journey with the title character, beginning with his harrowing birth and childhood."
"The beginning took it's time in revealing a "secret" but then it seemed to move entirely too swiftly over 2 key events to come to the end of the season; it was "too easy" how things suddenly came about in the favor of the main character."

Best L'Engle, Madeleine

An Acceptable Time (Madeleine L'Engle's Time Quintet)
A flash of lightning, quivering ground, and, instead of her grandparents' farm, Polly sees mist and jagged mountains -- and coming toward her, a group of young men carrying spears. Madeleine L'Engle was the author of more than forty-five books for all ages, among them the beloved A Wrinkle in Time, awarded the Newbery Medal; A Ring of Endless Light, a Newbery Honor Book; A Swiftly Tilting Planet, winner of the American Book Award; and the Austin family series of which Troubling a Star is the fifth book.
Reviews
"I know a lot of people who read it as kids and think it's a wonderful book so I don't want to rain on their parade, but I found the Christian overtones really silly and off-putting, especially in a book about alternate universes and planets."
"Overall, this book holds up as an entertaining and unique story for a new, adult reader."
"I loved this book as a child and can’t wait for my 12 year old to read it."
"I like the fairy tale and fanciful aspect to the characters and story line."
"Not at all what I expected to be read!"
"One of my all-time favorites as a child, and definitely holds up!"
"Great book!"

Best Steig, William

The One and Only Shrek!: Plus 5 Other Stories
To mark the 100th birthday of William Steig and in anticipation of the next blockbuster movie Shrek the Third, Macmillan Audio presents The One and Only Shrek! “Since one of the great pleasures of Steig's books is the language he uses, it's a particular delight to have the recording of The One and Only Shrek! You can really hear that the brilliance of 'Shrek' lies in the language Steig uses...one of the most delightful moments is when Shrek accosts a peasant, who is busy 'singing and scything,' and Tucci snarls Shrek's greeting: 'You there, varlet, why so blithe?'. The ogre's extreme repulsiveness gives Steig plenty of opportunity to trot out a vile vocabulary, but one of the most delightful moments is when Shrek accosts a peasant, who is busy "singing and scything," and Tucci snarls Shrek's greeting: "You there, varlet, why so blithe?" “What better way to learn the original story of Shrek than by listening to it on this unabridged recording...Meryl Streep is her best while reading Brave Irene ...And let's not forget Mr. Tucci.
Reviews
"(not that the movie was all that profound, but still...). What I like most about Stieg are his anthropomorphic animal characters that still look realistically animal-like, but for the facial expressions, body language and clothes."
"I've never read a William Steig book I didn't like."
"I didn't know about the book until recently, so I bought it so the girls could see the correlation between the book and the movies."
"We have the audio CD as well and my kids absolutely adore it, plus my husband and I actually enjoy hearing them."
"Though we had read a number of Steig books, two of these were nice surprises."
"Stieg has a very sophisticated senses of humor and irony that somehow works for kids and adults as well, I love Dr. De Soto and Brave Irene stories."
"My 3 year old son loved the stories and would sit quietly listening until he fell asleep to the ever fabulous Meryl Streep and Stanley Tucci."
"My kids love this book, and hear the narrator voice helps bring this story to life."

"So begins this lovely book, telling how a small brown bunny goes down the road and down the road one day when the butteflies are swaying on stalks and a flora botanica of the brightly colored small flowers are unfolding in the warm sunlight. Rush Revere and the Brave Pilgrims: Time-Travel Adventures with Exceptional Americans
America’s #1 radio talk-show host and multi-million-copy #1 New York Times bestselling author presents a book for young readers with a history teacher who travels back in time to have adventures with exceptional Americans. After offering a wide-ranging definition of American exceptionalism that begins with the statement that the U.S. is a “land built on true freedom and individual liberty, and it defends both around the world,” Limbaugh goes on to explain that the Founders believed all people were born to be “free as individuals.” Really? The book’s premise is that a substitute history teacher, Rush Revere, who dresses like his hero, Paul, along with his talking horse, Liberty, can go back in time. The text is wordy, and many of the pages are spent on the banter between Rush and Liberty, occasionally amusing but mostly just filling space, as do the tedious explanations of the way time travel works. They hadn’t been spoiled by wall-to-wall carpets, central heating and microwave ovens.” The fact that many modern-day people do experience incredible hardships, albeit different from the Pilgrims, seems not to have occurred to Limbaugh. Apparently, the turnaround for the struggling colony came “when every family was assigned its own plot of land to work.” Rush Revere drives home the point that it was after the Pilgrims stopped sharing the profits that success was ensured.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Book 5)
In the richest installment yet of J. K. Rowling's seven-part story, Harry Potter is faced with the unreliability of the very government of the magical world and the impotence of the authorities at Hogwarts. Despite this (or perhaps because of it), he finds depth and strength in his friends, beyond what even he knew, boundless loyalty; and unbearable sacrifice. Though thick runs the plot, listeners will race through these tapes and leave Hogwarts, like Harry, wishing only for the next train back. As his fifth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry approaches, 15-year-old Harry Potter is in full-blown adolescence, complete with regular outbursts of rage, a nearly debilitating crush, and the blooming of a powerful sense of rebellion. Somehow, over the summer, gossip (usually traced back to the magic world's newspaper, the Daily Prophet ) has turned Harry's tragic and heroic encounter with Voldemort at the Triwizard Tournament into an excuse to ridicule and discount the teen. With an overwhelming course load as the fifth years prepare for their Ordinary Wizarding Levels examinations (O.W.Ls), devastating changes in the Gryffindor Quidditch team lineup, vivid dreams about long hallways and closed doors, and increasing pain in his lightning-shaped scar, Harry's resilience is sorely tested.

"SPECIAL NOTE: For U.S. customers purchasing the illustrated edition of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, you will notice the text has NOT been converted to the "Americanized" version of the original U.S. releases (with the exception of changing all "Philosopher's Stone" mentions to "Sorcerer's Stone"). Good or bad is naturally for each reader to decide--just know, if you plan to read the books while listening to Jim Dale's audiobooks, you'll notice a few superficial differences. This difference isn't as prominent or noticeable as it was with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's/Philosopher's Stone, but still something to keep in mind. Also, to answer a question that has come up quite a bit, this is the FULL BOOK and not an abridged or shortened version. Underneath the book jacket, the novel is bound in a sturdy orange hardback with green lettering on the spine."
"I was ravenous to get my hands on my copy as soon as it was delivered this morning, but was quickly disappointed. But when I took a close look at my dust jacket, I was extremely upset to find that the gold foil lettering for "Harry Potter" had been rubbed away and destroyed completely in some places leaving ugly, black matte in its place-- pock marking the otherwise handsome gold lettering. Needless to say I'm in awe how Bloomsbury has managed to put together such an incredible project, with JK Rowling's remarkable literature and Jim Kay's otherworldly illustrations-- and allowed it to be put together in a low quality binding! Not all alone in a box... Update (October 9th): I have finally received my new book and it was in much, much better condition. The cover and spine were tight, intact and falling apart from the binding like my original copy."

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Book 2)
But just as he's packing his bags, Harry receives a warning from a strange, impish creature named Dobby who says that if Harry Potter returns to Hogwarts, disaster will strike. Broadway actor Jim Dale's impressive vocal range gives each character in the book its own distinctive voice--a considerable task, given the pantheon of witches, warlocks, ghosts, ghouls, dwarves, and elves that Harry encounters in his second outing.

"Our 3 year old had already been quite proficient with his ABC's when we gave him this book on his birthday, but we'll get a "2-fer" out of it - a fun reinforcement for him that he'll begin to actually read with, and it'll be waiting in the wings for his 1 year old baby sister (not to mention the newest family addition we recently found out about, due to arrive next May!). You can probably imagine that - having babysat for three of my four grandchildren for 7 years prior to my daughter-in-law becoming a stay-at-home-mom - we have MANY board books included in the large children's library we've built for them over those years - typically, if they're board book versions of a previously released book, they're greatly ABRIDGED versions. I have to say that not only is this one of the highest quality-constructed board books we've purchased, but at 36 pages long (as compared to the hardcover's 40 pages), I think we've actually got most of the entire original book!"
