She points out the physical and mental obstacles you'll face trying to incorporate them, and her empathy for our creative hang-ups and self-sabotage is a relief. I noted areas where I needed to focus (just take on short assignments, see them through from beginning to end, ground the reader in the scene and time), and the techniques she offered were great food for thought. It was also reassuring to see the skills I'm confident in highlighted as integral, chiefly reverence and curiosity. Publication, recognition, fame, all that stuff that sounds good pales in comparison to this simple sensation."
