At the height of World War II, LOOK Magazine profiled a small American community for a series of articles portraying it as the wholesome, patriotic model of life on the home front. Decades later, author Matthew Rozell tracks down over thirty survivors who fought the war in the Pacific, from Pearl Harbor to the surrender at Tokyo Bay. — ‘I remember it rained like hell that night, and the water was running down the slope into our foxholes. This book brings you the previously untold firsthand accounts of combat and brotherhood, of captivity and redemption, and the aftermath of a war that left no American community unscathed. — ‘After 3½ years of starvation and brutal treatment, that beautiful symbol of freedom once more flies over our head! The blue came from a GI barracks bag, red from a Jap comforter and the white from an Australian bed sheet. When I came out of the barracks and saw those beautiful colors for the first time, I felt like crying!’~Joe Minder, U.S. Army POW, Japan,1945. As we forge ahead as a nation, we owe it to ourselves to become reacquainted with a generation that is fast leaving us, who asked for nothing but gave everything, to attune ourselves as Americans to a broader appreciation of what we stand for. A selection of comments left by Amazon reviewers: "Great book that is easy to follow. Mr. Rozell constructed the living memories of heroes of the Pacific War into a striking and amazing narrative." Long may books like this be read by the young people of the 21st century to understand the hardship, altruism and sacrifice of others that built the freedoms of today. By and large, they're all interesting and capture the experiences of young men thrown into the horrors of a vicious war, but this one is different. Mr. Rozell weaves the experiences of more than thirty veterans, some barely out of their teens, into a coherent story of our war in the Pacific. For the first time, they realized the size and variety, the richness of cultures and classes of the people in this country. Patriotism, for many of these veterans, took a back seat to the responsibility they felt to their compatriots. They fought, not so much against the enemy, but rather for the guys next to them. "This collection of stories from veterans of World War II in the Pacific should be a 'must-read' for students and any history buffs. It flowed smoothly as the author introduced so many veterans from the day the US entered the war to the end and followed several as they came home." My father, a member of 'The Greatest Generation', would never talk to me about the serious events in his deployment to the South Pacific. The things he told me could have been right out this book; the same words, the same descriptions of horrible sights, the same sorrow for friends lost...the same guilt for having survived. Rozell gives us background, structure and scope without ever falling in love with his own voice or stealing the limelight, and that is no simple task. I felt like I was sitting in the room with a group of WWII veterans, hearing their stories of hardship, fear, and what they had to do for their country, for their family and friends, fighting for what they believed in. I decided to look more into the Pacific side and I picked up this book. The stories of sacrifice and service of the men included impacted me deeply and I have a renewed respect for what they did. Your book helped me understand, a little better what my father faced - the fear, horror and suffering that is most personal to each soldier. I don't know how to explain the feeling of sitting down and going back to re-listen to and edit these conversations, which in many cases took place years ago. You really have the feeling that you are doing a kind of cosmic CPR,taking their original words and breathing new life in a readable format that places readers at the kitchen table with that person who had something important to say. I saw this spark kindled time and again in my classroom, when we got to hear from real people who had a front row seat, who acted in the greatest drama in the history of the world.

Find Best Price at Amazon"Up through to the end of 3rd grade in the public school system, the only exposure she'd had to history is to the timespan just before and just after the American revolutionary war. But I didn't want it to turn into a grind for her, so I took the authors' intentions to heart and I'm using this series to form a groundwork for a basic understanding of history. So all the complaints about inaccuracies in the book and the author's religious slant (which I didn't find and I was looking for), they don't matter. What really matters is that my daughter enjoys learning about history (it's her favorite class) and she's building a foundation that can be built on in later years. All history books will turn up people who will disagree with the content, will find inaccuracies in the material, or won't agree with the author's point of view."
"I have been reading this to my 7 year old boy ( we started it when he was 6) and he is absolutely captivated."
"Our school year hasn't started yet."
"We love this book."
"I was a little worried what my kids will think, but they LOVE this narration."
"We also spent some time in other sources during the Roman chapters just because there's so much there in the records, and this volume brought up subjects we wanted to investigate further."
"If you are really into the activity book, make sure you get the newer version."
"I was very hesitant to purchase this book at first, due to some of the negative reviews."

"True to the song "It only takes a spark..to get the fire going" and oh my what a spARK! Book begins with how the spark began, in an obscure little village no longer on the map, whereupon an old German preacher stumbled into upon getting lost, and found himself amid cold folk but who jumped at the chance of being used to heal the village leader who was bedridden for two years imprisoned by pain, but even though there were just two converted that day, the healed man and his wife (and presumably his 17 y.o."
"Reinhard Bonnke, though now retired and stationed in Florida, I believe is the greatest evangelist of the 20th century when it comes to preaching the complete Gospel: the work of the cross of Jesus, healing by the power of the Holy Spirit, and the complete message of redemption for spirit and body!"

New terms are defined; code is colored, dissected, and explained; and quirky, full-color illustrations keep things on the lighter side. As you strike out on your programming adventure, you’ll learn how to: –Use fundamental data structures like lists, tuples, and maps. –Organize and reuse your code with functions and modules. –Use control structures like loops and conditional statements. –Draw shapes and patterns with Python’s turtle module. –Create games, animations, and other graphical wonders with tkinter. Make sure you try out code examples for yourself (don’t just read about them). Better yet, if you change things around to see what effect that has, you’ll learn and understand more. In Python, either in the Shell (IDLE) or the Console, you can type and run statements directly and see what happens. That way you can save your file, run it, and come back and fiddle with the code without having to re-type everything. Think arcade games from the 1970’s and 1980’s—games like Galaxian, Centipede, Donkey Kong, and Frogger have simple graphics and basic game mechanics, which makes them great first projects for budding game developers. It’s much more satisfying to take a simple project and actually finish it, rather than a hugely ambitious, complicated project that you never get working.

How does Finnish education―with short school days, light homework loads, and little standardized testing―produce students who match the PISA scores of high-powered, stressed-out kids in Asia? Remarkably, Finland is prioritizing the joy of learning in its newest core curricula and Walker carefully highlights specific strategies that support joyful K-12 classrooms and integrate seamlessly with educational standards in the United States. “[Walker] provides an engaging and eye-opening vision that does not pit America against Finland, but lets us see what we can learn from each other... For teachers and education advocates who would like to understand one instructor's reflective quest toward educational improvement.”. - Library Journal. “Walker was nevertheless able to identify 33 strategies that could be easily introduced into American educational systems… [Walker’s ideas] are geared toward the relaxed, flexible, welcoming atmosphere that works so well for both teachers and students in Finland. “More joy in classrooms and less work for teachers as the way to improving student learning? Sounds incredible, but the Finns have figured it out, and Tim Walker explains how American educators can do the same in this engaging and important book. “Tim Walker is one of the most thoughtful educators I've ever encountered. His observations as an American teacher working in Finnish classrooms will surprise many readers: Some traditional ideas we've pushed aside actually work well in Finland, some of Finland's most effective strategies originated in American schools.

"His strategies talk not only about teaching but the things we should be doing outside of teaching to help us become better teachers."
"The 33 simple strategies (basic reminders; many are adapted from Lemov’s Teach Like a Champion) are pedagogically solid, activities we should be doing in order to keep learning joyful: frequent breaks with fresh air and movement, gallery walks, showing relevance of lesson, choice time in which “students can select from a range of options, ten minutes of free reading, free writing, or playing a fun math game,” getting to know each child to incorporate their interests into the instruction, and many more. They “typically employ traditional, teacher-driven classroom instruction….like lecturing” and “students...typically spend a significant amount of classroom time completing exercises from workbooks” and “copying text off the blackboard (or whiteboard) into their notebooks.” Most surprisingly, they don’t “take intentional, voluntary steps to improve significantly as practitioners, whether it be thorough reading professional literature of their choice, attending summer institutes, or implementing new pedagogies in their classrooms.” Ouch."
