The Plant Paradox: The Hidden Dangers in "Healthy" Foods That Cause Disease and Weight Gain
The Plant Paradox shows the world what pioneer thinking is about and is a must-read book for anyone interested in being as healthy as nature has designed them to be.” — Alejandro Junger MD , New York Times bestselling author of Clean, Clean Gut and Clean Eats. Americans spend billions of dollars on gluten-free diets in an effort to protect their health. Once ingested, they incite a kind of chemical warfare in our bodies, causing inflammatory reactions that can lead to weight gain and serious health conditions. At his waitlist-only clinics in California, Dr. Gundry has successfully treated tens of thousands of patients suffering from autoimmune disorders, diabetes, leaky gut syndrome, heart disease, and neurodegenerative diseases with a protocol that detoxes the cells, repairs the gut, and nourishes the body. Whether you’re paleo, gluten-free, low-carb or plant-based, Dr. Gundry’s profound insights and practical advice will help reverse both autoimmune and neurodegenerative disease.” ( Terry Wahls, MD, author of The Wahls Protocol: A Radical New Way to Treat All Chronic Autoimmune Conditions Using Paleo Principles ). “Once in a generation a doctor and a book comes along that completely changes the way we think about food and our health. Dr. Gundry is that physician and The Plant Paradox is that book.

"Steven R. Gundry, MD, a distinguished heart disease physician, researcher, and inventor, has successfully treated tens of thousands of patients with the Plant Paradox Program (PPP) or Keto Plant Paradox Intensive Care Program—nutritional treatments he created. After about 30 days, I suffered from bouts of burping and farting for about ten days—symptoms caused by withdrawing from my unhealthy diet and starting a healthy one. One way to view this book is as Dr. Gundry's prescription for people interested in being as healthy as possible. For example, I checked all of the salad dressings in two health food stores and couldn't find an acceptable one. Good news: Patricia suggests ways to economize (from her Comment on her 04/27/2017 review). "Buying a pressure cooker to make them [legumes] safe to eat would pay for itself; beans are so inexpensive, and can replace more of the expensive pastured, grass-fed, and wild-caught animal proteins." "Make omega-3 eggs a large percentage of the animal protein you get - fortunately these are more and more available at supermarkets for about $5 a dozen, sometimes even less." More bad news: Avoid sugar, agave, Splenda, NutraSweet, Sweet 'n Low, cows' milk, diet drinks, maltodextrin. Some excerpts: grass-fed and grass-finished beef and lamb; humanely raised pork; wild game; pastured chicken, turkey, duck; pastured or omega-3 eggs; wild-caught Alaskan salmon, Alaskan halibut, freshwater bass, shrimp, crab; red wine (6 oz./day); goat cheese; coconut yogurt; broccoli; brussels sprouts; cauliflower; kale; napa cabbage; spinach; red and green leaf lettuce; romaine; limited amounts of blueberries, raspberries, apples, cherries, peaches, crispy pears, etc. The value of this book is enhanced by its meal plans for the PPP's three phases, an abundance of recipes, a comprehensive index, and a flowing writing style. Dr. Gundry has made a once-in-a-generation, groundbreaking contribution to our knowledge of diet's role in reversing and preventing both minor and major diseases. Also, the pain in my left hip changed from "greatly improved" to completely disappeared."
"Exercise is valuable to your health but likely will not lead to significant weight loss unless you are grossly overweight. Over the past 30 years I have suffered from Irritable Bowel Syndrome – with all its gory effects, and recently it seemed to be getting worse. Mind you, we eat very carefully in our house – small portions, little pasta, no junk food, no pizza, no fried chicken or fried food or any kind, no canned goods, no ice cream or big desserts, no beer, no sodas or diet sodas. In performing more research, I discovered and read Dr. Raphael Kellman’s book “The Microbiome Diet, and also listened to a video of Dr. Terry Wahls’. Fifteen years ago, I gave up muffins and granola (mostly carbohydrates) for breakfast. I was so proud of myself for switching to one small piece of 7-grain toast with natural nutty peanut butter, a banana, and a glass of milk (in addition to coffee) for breakfast. Ditto for the BBQ-baked beans I had come to have with every dinner, not to mention the small helping each night of mustard potato salad that I had with my corn and grain-fed meat loaded with antibiotics! I am now a believer in Dr. Gundry’s diet and more important, the power of his scientifically documented medical knowledge and health recommendations. On May 7th and 8th I sort of eased into his diet – starting with taking Dr. Gundry’s Vital Reds supplements. My goal over the next few months is to get to about 172 pounds, a weight that I was comfortable with for about 20 years a long time ago. In addition, even in this short amount of time, my IBS symptoms have lessened dramatically, my skin isn’t as dry, and I seem to be feeling pretty good! I find I like them a lot better mixed with additional foods like red onions, vinegar, and the like. I will update this review every couple of months to keep you all appraised of my progress and the benefits to me of my new Dr. Gundry diet. July 7, 2017. I thought I’d give interested readers an update on my 60 days on Dr. Gundry’s diet. Every day, at a minimum, I have a green smoothie, a hard-boiled egg, and Dr. Gundry’s turkey chorizo sausage and spinach muffin, plus various meats and fish protein, along with his recommended vegetables. I must say, though, it’s a bit tougher to stay on Gundry’s limit of 6 ounces of red wine per evening! Scallops and shrimp are especially easy to cook – just fry them in avocado oil with a bit of garlic. That makes it fast and easy to pull four leftover jumbo shrimps or a chicken thigh out of the fridge the next day for lunch, along with a smoothie and a cup of yogurt. My doctor recommended MiraLAX, or you could take Metamucil, but raw vegetables and/or flaxseed and/or prune juice are better for you. Her book has more specifics on blood marker numbers, nutritional content of foods, and some great recipes. After reading Dr. Wahls’ book, I am changing my B12 pills to sublingual ones, and adding CoQ (Qunol’s Ubiquinol) and Emerald Sea’s seaweed powder to my daily intake. I was particularly interested to read about Dr. Wahls’ progress from a “conventionally trained” MD to a practitioner of the much more holistic functional medicine. As far as I know, Dr. Gundry’s, Dr. Wahls’, and perhaps Dr. Raphael Kellman’s current books represent the state-of-the-art in functional medicine regarding self-healing through diet."

Holding my head heavy in my hands, sobbing uncontrollably at the kitchen table, not knowing which way to turn, I realized I had finally hit a wall. Through the streaming tears and heaving sobs, I whispered what I vowed never to do: ‘I give up.’ I have nothing left in knowing what is next, I pleaded to the darkness. Since then, it had been five months of consistent doctor visits, herbs and supplements, acupuncture and energetic healing work, hypnotherapy and homeopathy, psychology, medical tests and procedures, paperwork and phone calls, lab tests and consultations, medicine and vitamins, more tests, and numerous ER visits in snowstorms—all leading to a dead end and no hope in sight, with my son’s condition only slowly worsening over time. I was exhausted physically and emotionally, broken down by the relentlessness of my son’s undiagnosable stomach pain and no hope for healing. “Leaving a medical office one day, pushing my son in a wheelchair (because it was now too painful and tiring for him to walk much) down the long corridor of the medical center from which we had spent many, many hours over many months, my ten-year-old son looked up at me and said, ‘They aren’t on our side, Mom.’. “Then, the answer to my prayer arrived through a text from my mother explaining she had found someone who I should check out named Anthony William. Anthony William knew what was ailing my son within the first three minutes of our phone conversation, explaining that Calvin had a mutated shingles virus inflaming his vagus nerve. This explained the nerve pain and the lack of physical evidence in any blood work or other existing diagnostic tools. He was available to me when I needed him for follow-up calls (even in the middle of the night), emotional support, and as my cheerleader to keep me going as Calvin recovered. “It is clear how deeply committed Anthony is to his work in serving others in order that they may have the possibility to lead healthy, vibrant lives. “In 2015, my previously healthy five-year-old daughter started to develop neurological issues such as wobbly legs, frequent falls, an inability to walk when going from sitting to standing, general weakness, and decreased strength. Being a nurse for ten years and my medical community not providing me answers about why my daughter was getting worse was a hard pill to swallow. After visiting multiple doctors in several different states without any answers except ‘asthma’ and medications to treat the asthmatic symptoms, I was fortunate enough to have a session with Anthony William where he gave me specific information about the source of my son’s problems as well as holistic ways in which to repair them. It is hard to express the gratitude I feel toward Anthony William for his invaluable insight that directly led to my son’s amazing recovery into the teenager I always hoped he could be—active, healthy, happy, and enjoying life with a smile on his face and boundless energy!”.

"Reading Anthony William's books and using the treasure trove of information contained within is the single most impactful thing I have ever done in my life, and for my health and well-being. I have healed illnesses that all the doctors could do is shrug their shoulders and hand me pills, along with the statement, "There's nothing we can really do for you". Anthony William is the only person who has ever given any true answers, and any infmation that actually helped me to heal the ROOT cause of my illnesses. That's the short version of my story - this information works because it is true, pure and untampered with. If you want the long version of my story, it's below: I have about a page of diagnoses that it took years of searching to get before I finally found Anthony William's book. I'll list some of them: Fibromyalgia, Mast Cell Activation Disorder, Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Hypothyroid, PCOS, Migraines, PTSD, Depression, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Dysautonomia/POTS, Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, Sleep Apnea,....there are more diagnoses, but that's enough, you get the picture, right? I was homebound for almost a year because I was essentially allergic to the world and would react to all kinds of things wherever I went. I was unable to prepare food, or do dishes or laundry or keep my house clean. I had homeschooled my son and was unable to do that anymore - the only time I left my house was for doctors' appointments, and I had to always be driven by my husband because I had lost the ability to drive a car. I had less than zero energy, I felt horrible all the time, I was in terrible all over body pain and had crazy brain fog. I ate what I believed to be SO cleanly - all organic, grassfed, free-range meats and eggs, no grains or dairy, no nightshades, autoimmune paleo, low FODMAP. But he also worked 40 hours a week, took care of our son, made our food, did all of the grocery shopping and other errands, took care of the house and 1.5 acre yard, was getting our house ready to sell - I had zero idea how I was going to do this cleanse, how I could possibly pull it off with no energy to make any food. My energy was highest (I use that term very loosely) in the morning, so okay, let's see if I can manage to make some celery juice. At the time I only had a Vitamix, no juicer, so I used that and a tiny bit of water to blend the celery, then strained it through a nut milk bag. And still surprisingly, I had enough energy that day to make myself a morning smoothie after the celery juice. It went on like that as I did the cleanse - by Day 3 I began to blog it, because it was a freaking miracle happening to me, I couldn't believe it. But I got into the groove eventually, and the last week of the cleanse I did add in cooked potato to slow down the detox a bit. One day I realized I'd forgotten to call in my Low Dose Naltrexone prescription, because I no longer needed it to take the edge off the pain! My EDS symptoms like constant subluxations and pain - G. O. N. E. I can hardly believe how much has healed. My rosacea is healing, a raised mole I had completely disappeared, and listen, my friends, this is not just me I am talking about - I am by no means an anomaly here. I"m happy to answer any real questions you have about this work, but if you're on the fence and wondering if you should buy this (and the other two books) and if you can heal?"
"When it comes to my health, I always want to know and heal the ROOT cause of a problem. Since finding Anthony William and the Medical Medium books 6 months ago, I’ve had thousands of “Aha!” moments, moments when I both realized the accurate root cause of a health struggle or repeated symptom, and exactly what I can do to heal it myself, and in the most efficient way possible. Since finding these books, I’ve experienced better and better health every month. I haven’t finished it yet, so I’ll update the review soon, but already this book has masive amounts of new empowering, clear, and accurate information on the why and how of so many symptoms/illnesses, and what the heck to do for outstanding health and freedom from disease and health challenges. It also has more in-depth healing protocols (with new 90-day healing plans), it addresses how to adjust if you are sensitive to detoxing too fast, and wonderful recipes for making delicious healing foods for the whole family."
"I just wanted to share my healing story for all those who are out there and considering whether they should buy this book or not. For the past 25 years I went to every doctor for my Fibromyalgia, Low thyroid, Pain, Brain Fog, Tremors, Dizziness, cold all the time, severe depression, weight gain. If you have any kind of thyroid problem then this book is your only answer, it’s the only truth out there."

"This was a great book that I'm so glad I read."
"In “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks,” Rebecca Skloot introduces us to the “real live woman,” the children who survived her, and the interplay of race, poverty, science and one of the most important medical discoveries of the last 100 years. Skloot narrates the science lucidly, tracks the racial politics of medicine thoughtfully and tells the Lacks family’s often painful history with grace. When science appears, it does so effortlessly, with explanations of cell anatomy or techniques like “fluorescence in situ hybridization” seamlessly worked into descriptions of the coloured wards of Johns Hopkins hospital to Lacks’s hometown of Clover, Virginia. And yet for all its grand scope, skilful writing and touching compassion, there is one simple element that makes As a final thought, I was struck by the parallels between Henrietta’s cells and her story."
"This decisive, detailed, superbly written history of the HeLa cells that have played such a highly significant role in many arenas of medical research delves deeply into both the scientific and personal stories of Henrietta Lacks and her family."
"A legacy, kept hidden for over 20+ years from Henrietta Lack's family and those of us,who are not privy to the inner circles of the medical and science community."
"Skloot did a terrific job spending years gathering information from the family and researching scientific discoveries related to the cells."
"Incredible true story of a woman's legacy, from the usage of her DNA without consent, to the medical miracles her stolen contribution made, to the injustices her family faced decades later."
"The book, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks was a very interesting and informative read."
"One of the most amazing books I have ever read."

"There was no sex education that i could remember and the only thing I do remember about AIDS was a gym teacher telling the class that if you are gay, your tongue will turn purple and you will die of AIDS."
"I remember hearing of a "homosexual disease" in early summer 1981, which was surprisingly early, especially for an Ohioan."
"I didn’t really understand the beginning of the HIV/AIDS crisis since I was too young."
"This book gives the story of the start of the aids epidemic and the missteps and prejudices by doctors, government, and media that led to this problem."
"The story successfully blends a number of elements: competitive jealousies within the scientific community (it's likely that the French actually discovered the AIDS virus, despite a neck-in-neck US researcher who claimed the glory), the politics of the slow-moving National Institutes of Health (NIH), Reagan's stubborn refusal to address the AIDS issue (he finally did so six years after the epidemic began--and after 20,850 citizens had died), and a number of incredibly touching stories of people with the disease. One thing I hadn't known was the schism within the gay community: some people recognizing the reality of the threat while others (understandably) discounted it as internalized homophobia or as a homophobic attempt at sexual repression. This book captures a period in time where, in the midst of sometimes slow-moving science, second-class-citizen politics, and a seemingly indifferent larger society, some dedicated people struggled to raise awareness, to change habits, and others, to face death with equanimity."
"The "Butcher's Bill," the tally of deaths to AIDS, is a steady drumbeat in each chapter as LGBT activists on the ground race to care for the dying as bureaucracy hampers research and recognition for the virus."

"So I quit my job and school and took time off, expecting to recuperate within a few months. I suffered severe chemical and mold sensitivities and began to develop hives. I'm not a dramatic person by nature, but I assure you, some days I wasn't sure how much sicker one could get before the body just gave up altogether. Finally, a few months ago I happened upon some website extolling the GAPS diet. I looked into it but figured I was already eating a clean (mostly) paleo diet, so I didn't need to buy this book. When I had to stay home on Christmas day because I felt so toxic and crummy, I decided to purchase the book. I had been toxic for so long that I was used to feeling lousy, but the die-off this diet produced was intense. The diet alone, even without the introduction of probiotics, sauerkraut, and kefir was enough to produce rapid die-off. However, since starting GAPS I have stopped taking the majority of my supplements, simply because I no longer need them. At long last, my diet is providing the nutrients my body has been needing all along for repair (particularly cholesterol and saturated fats, which are sadly demonized in our culture). I probably sound like a crazy person because I'm so, so excited about this book and this diet; but if you're sick like I was, you know all too well what it's like to live in a chronically ill body. Because I'm having such rapid success on the intro phase, I intend to stick with it for a few months. That's the nice thing about this diet; you move at your own pace and let your body be the guide. I'm also curious to see how this diet helps me with the mental health issues I've contended with since childhood (namely fits of debilitating anxiety, ocd, and depression that have become increasingly severe in the last few years). I had tried several SSRI's over the last ten years until a new doctor put me on Adderall (which is nothing more than a mixture of amphetamine salts and is very, very hard on the adrenals) after diagnosing me with ADHD. Reading success stories of people recovering from CFS is what got me through the worst moments. I hope my story does the same, and I will update again in a few months as I progress along my GAPS journey. I no longer seem to be affected by pollen, which in previous years gave me terrible allergies and sinus infections. I've lost 15 pounds and walk an hour or more just about daily in addition to my chores around the house. There has been no improvement on the mental stuff yet; in fact, the die-off seems to be temporarily making it much worse. I'm experiencing new die-off symptoms (caused by breaking up biofilm in my gut with probiotics and systemic enzymes, I believe) like visual disturbances, rosacea and other rashes, adrenaline rushes, numbness/tingling/burning in my extremities. I can't tell you how wonderful it feels to have some relief from this torment for the first time in over ten years (most of my adult life). It takes a long time to undo decades' worth of damage. In my case, after the infection is gone, I will still need to detox, fix my adrenals completely, get my metabolic hormones back in order, and perhaps chelate. Thanks to all of you who have commented or contacted me over the past year; it's been wonderful swapping stories and information. I am still quite toxic but can now tolerate an infrared sauna, which is great for detox, every other day. The little things that used to require so much effort are back to being a routine part of my life, i.e. doing my hair, wearing make-up, etc. There are still periods every few weeks of fatigue and die-off, where my IBS symptoms act up, anxiety and brain fog skyrocket, and I feel rough. I have read most of the other reviews here, and I am so happy about and moved by how much this diet is helping people with chronic, so-called "untreatable" conditions."
"I initially picked up this book because it had been getting discussion on an autism parenting group that I belong to. I started to learn about the diet by reading information online, then decided it was potentially worth pursuing further and purchased the book. However, as I read the book, I realized that I needed to try this diet for my own issues as well, extreme PMS and major digestive issues (which turned out to be ulcerative colitis, as diagnosed via colonoscopy 3 months after I had started the diet). There are a few other foods we typically don't eat much of either, based on working with a Nurse Practitioner who is also GAPS Certified. My daughter was sick with strep throat multiple times a year as well as extreme sinus issues. The doctors were urging us to have her tonsils and adenoids removed, yet could not guarantee that would solve the issue. After I got my colitis diagnosis, I held off taking the medication for 4.5 months, thinking that the diet would "cure" me. And then I recently started a high dose of prescription probiotics, which has helped even more. Just for my daughter and me, I typically have 3 loads of dishes in the dishwasher throughout the day, plus all the things that need to be hand washed. When we were on Intro Diet, I would have between 3 and 5 loads of dishwasher dishes going plus all the things that had to be hand washed. However, I know a few adults that are on this diet without the considerations of a child, and they also complain about the work it takes, and the several loads of dishes to clean each day. I wish that Dr. Natasha (author of GAPS Diet), would stress that it can be beneficial to seek out additional, more personalized medical advice. There is an additional website with more up to date information that needs to be checked fairly often for updates. How in the world do you explain to an 8 year old child who has been slowly going through Intro Diet and has been doing this for a year that you are going to have to backtrack and spend 6+ months only eating broth, boiled meats and boiled vegetables, and raw egg yolks. This diet is very emotional and I find that even being farther along on it that I tend to have low morale with all the work and being exhausted with it. When we initially started this diet, the information was to move through the stages once you no longer see "reactions" or symptoms improve. And now all of the sudden the information is that if certain things have not improved, go back and stay in Stage 2 for 6+ months. And, it is important to know that the diet also draws heavily from Traditional Dietary guidelines as put forth by the Weston A. Price Foundation (google that), along with the cookbook Nourishing Traditions (can be found on amazon). Although not specifically addressing the same issues, there are many more Paleo blogs with recipes online than GAPS. Paleo recipes sometimes require some easy modification of either leaving out an ingredient or two or substituting."

Grain Brain: The Surprising Truth about Wheat, Carbs, and Sugar--Your Brain's Silent Killers
Groundbreaking and timely, Grain Brain shows that the fate of your brain is not in your genes, it's in the food you eat. Modern wheat, in particular, is responsible for destroying more brains in this country than all the strokes, car accidents, and head trauma combined. Dr. Perlmutter makes a persuasive case for this wheat-free approach to preserve brain health and functioning, or to begin the process of reversal." "If you want to boost your brain power, keep your memory, and lift your mood and energy, as well as heal from a host of other common complaints, Dr. Perlmutter is your guide. "A provocative, eye-opening scientific account of how diet profoundly influences nerve health and brain function. Grain Brain explains how the American diet rich in gluten and inflammatory foods is linked to neurological conditions. "A galvanizing call to arms against a gluten-heavy diet....Perlmutter's credentials as a board-certified neurologist and American College of Nutrition Fellow make him a uniquely qualified voice in the debate about which foods are best for the brain and body." "Mind-blowing and disruptive to some long-standing beliefs about what our bodies require for optimal health...GRAIN BRAIN lays out an easy-to-understand roadmap packed with the latest science."

"One of the most successful many I ever met told me that, "the data talks"."
"I'm never hungry, I get to eat all kinds of meats and cheeses and veggies, and I don't even bother counting calories. The supplements he recommends have made an almost instant difference - my nails are stronger and growing long, my skin is better, and my overall mood is vastly improved."
"It changed everything I thought I knew about food and its relationship to health. You just eat what’s good for you: Fat - lots of it, meats, vegetables, eggs, cheese, salads, nuts, seeds (my new favorite snack is Pepitas, which they have at Publix). I eat a lot less than I used to because I’m getting enough fat in my diet, and not stuffing myself with useless breads, crackers, chips, and pasta – which just make me hungrier and hungrier. What I’ve gained are increased energy, lots less brain fog, joints moving better (do not hurt all the time), less headaches – a LOT less, tummy troubles are now non-existent, and before, I was always gaseous or had diarrhea, or just was hurting in general. My labs were checked in February, after just two months, and my doc was blown away. I was no longer in the diabetic range and my liver functions had normalized. He also has a good website with a lot of articles to read: [...] If you want your health back, it’s time to read, Grain Brain!"
"It is a sobering read, but is a must read if you are interested in maintaining good brain health and avoiding diseases such as Type II Diabetes, as well as potentially significantly reducing the risk of developing dementia and other brain disease."
"I overheard a couple of fellow Bikram yoginis discussing Dr. Perlmutter's current book "Brain Maker," and I decided to order both books."
"This book has answered what I haven't gotten from other Drs.. My skin is dry and hair thining, I truly needed more fat in my diet and now see that grains were my problem and low fat has starved my body of needed oils...."
"As Mark Twain commented on New England weather, "If you don't like the weather just wait a minute, it'll change," it seems the same holds true for medical/health research studies."

The End of Alzheimer's: The First Program to Prevent and Reverse Cognitive Decline
Now, The End of Alzheimer’s brings new hope to a broad audience of patients, caregivers, physicians, and treatment centers with a fascinating look inside the science and a complete step-by-step plan that fundamentally changes how we treat and even think about AD. " The End of Alzheimer's , for the first time, synthesizes the latest science into a practical plan that can reverse Alzheimer's and dramatically improve brain health and function. —Chris Kresser, M.S., L.Ac Founder, Kresser Institute for Functional & Evolutionary Medicine, Author of the New York Times best seller The Paleo Cure " The End of Alzheimer’s is a masterful, authoritative, and ultimately hopeful patient guide to functional medicine for your brain. "Dr. Dale Bredesen is a world class neuroscientist/neurologist who through his innovative and exacting research has discovered a safe and effective approach to the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer's disease that will revolutionize the way we think about the disease." —Jeffrey Bland, PhD, FACN, FACB; President, Personalized Lifestyle Medicine Institute " The End of Alzheimer's offers a new beginning in Medicine — changing the focus from a singular disease to recognizing the systems-based approach required to care for the whole person. —Patrick Hanaway, MD, Founding Medical Director, Director of Research, Center for Functional Medicine, Cleveland Clinic "In this engaging, heartfelt, and insightful book, Dr. Bredesen elucidates a bold new approach to Alzheimer's, rooted in decades of his own pioneering research.
Reviews
"Dr. Bredeson is a rare physician that has escaped the confines of conventional medicine and explored strategies that really do radically reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s and improve those that already have the condition. Because we have a tsunami of Alzheimer’s disease approaching on and it is on track to take the lives of 45 million of the 325 million Americans alive today. He is the director of Neurodegenerative Disease Research at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Medicine, He has identified a number of molecular mechanisms at work in this disease, and has created a novel program to treat and reverse it that he calls ReCODE (Reversal of Cognitive Decline). Many are concerned about this disease and have had themselves tested for the genetic risk factor Apolipoprotein E epsilon 4 (ApoE4). His ReCode program discussed three dozen different tests that one can screen for and if they are abnormal they can be addressed to improve the synaptic balance to a more healthy level and reverse or radically reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s."
"None of the Bredesen Protocol is part of the Kaiser program, and the physicians we spoke with did not even know what a functional medicine physician is, but did not think that Kaiser had one. Fortunately, we were able to qualify for a Bredesen Immersion program with Dr. Bredesen and a team he assembled of trained functional medicine physicians in March 2017."
"Watching her decline has been heart wrenching, and I'm constantly trying to find ways to make her life better. I first heard of the Bredesen Protocal last winter, when Maria Shriver discussed it on the Today Show. Live your life in a way that keeps your brain supplied with as many as possible of the 36 factors that influence whether APP gets cut into the destructive quartet or the beneficial duo. Several years ago, I struggled with brain fog and often had difficulty remembering numbers for even a couple of minutes. I reached a point where I thought I would die, so I wrote my will and made plans for my dogs after I was gone. I used the USDA Super Tracker to make sure that my diet exceeded the RDA for every nutrient they tracked. Long story short, I fell back into old habits, abandoned my perfect diet and exercise program, and gradually regained weight. Dr. Bredesen states in the book that his protocol may not work for frontal lobe and other types of dementias. I feel that it's still very important to heed his advice, as Alzheimers often doesn't get a definite diagnosis until after death."

"I used to be on the raw food diet, ate organic and healthy and I was still experiencing a low immune system, breaking out, and a chronic yeast infection that I've had for over 5 years. I've tried treating the yeast infection with antibiotics, a watered down hydrogen peroxide douche, and boric acid suppositories. I use 1 liter of water to 2 TB sea salt and pour it over a mixture of chopped veggies and let it sit on my counter for 7 days. I also purchased water kefir granules 2 years ago from an online shop that only sells that and they are still healthy and creating wonderful drinks. Teas with flavored stevias (specifically vanilla cream) and my recipe for homemade healthy kettle corn has helped me greatly."
"If you love to ferment or love to eat fermented foods, this is a good place to start."
"There is a lot of filler in this book to get through but there are a lot of interesting things to learn by reading it."
"Book was new as described and I 'm enjoying it very much."
"This is a book I needed for required reading."
"Body Ecology adds all the best philosophy of the best diet practices together, explains them a bit, then takes another step and adds yet another piece of food wisdom."

Reviews
"Then late Dec 2012 - PT is great until one rushed day when she stretched my right leg too far too fast. I tried everything over the next few months - acupuncture, chiropractor, spine drs, orthopedist, physiatrist, neurologist, steroid shot, supplements, stretching, walking through the pain, ice, heat, epsom salt baths 3+ times a day, etc etc. I used to run, bike 40 miles a week, garden, now I was reduced to a cane and suggestions of back surgery in less than a couple of months of being in great shape and NO pain?? So I was going through a review of what, I do not remember, maybe a supplement that might alleviate pain, and it mentions looking into trigger point therapy. I come home and my husband comes out to help me, worried that I am going to be in a bad place pain wise. For low back pain, your glutes carry some heavy duty trigger points. It's is some work to keep up with all the trigger points that crop up but I do it while watching TV or listening to music. BTW, if you stretch a tired or cold muscle too fast/too hard it can set off a trigger point. If I had known about trigger point therapy, I could have saved myself from a year of hell on me and my family, as well as the bills. I recommend a cleaner diet, exercise, fresh air and constant movement versus just sitting. Excessive sitting and lying around make soft tissue pain worse. I love Tiger Balm for night time stiffness or to help get your circulation going on a painful spot. There are also some good videos and a Ted Talk on the science of pain in the brain that are worth watching. I took a nasty fall on my bike last week and was totally panicked, as I have not fully recovered from this past year's trauma. I got into the habit of using the lacrosse ball and it works well, but I started to get more pain in the hips & tightness in lower back. YouTube has many instructional videos on how to work out TrP if the book is too technical or if you need a visual. You have to be careful with the QL muscles (most of us have TrPs there but don't know it until you get in there with a small TrP ball) or you might cause back spasms. I had a chiropractor overwork my QL's and set off a horrific week of spasms before I discovered TrP therapy. I joined a gym for the 1st time in a decade to get me through this hard Boston winter and was surprised how many people at the gym were ending their workouts with trigger point therapy methods - rolling out on balls or foam rollers, trainers using them on clients, etc. )I have found great pain release from working these hard to reach glute points. For some women in major hormone flux it can be severe enough for you to be diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome or fibromyalgia. Yes there are some true cases of those diseases that are not related to hormones or trigger points, but there are also women being misdiagnosed & sent home with RX's for anti-depressants & way too strong pain meds. A balanced - KEY WORD IS BALANCED - hormone therapy (like bio hormone replacements) as well as exercise, diet, TrP, and improved digestion (which diminished greatly around 40-45 in women) will make a difference in your pain levels.I am working with a gifted endocrinologist who tests my blood 2x a month so we can get the best picture how to manage my perimenopause. I do not have CFS or fibromyalgia, but I do notice that trigger points crop up more often now that my blood tests reveal I am primenopausal. I travel with 2 sizes of balls when I fly so that I can roll out those knots that can happen after being cramped on a plane. *UPDATE* August 31, 2016. I am still actively and successfully using TrP therapy to manage my low back, as well as misc aches and pains that crop up. About 3 times a week I spend a half hour or more with my super bounce rubber ball and a concrete wall. I ruptured my L4-L5 disc in my late 20's, which puts my low back at a higher risk for aches and pain when I sit too long on something soft, or work too hard in the garden. Before I found this therapy, I used to get so tight, manage my aches with Advil, and wait for it to pass, usually a few days. Now that I know what to do, I roll out my calf trigger points right away & find relief within a day. I wish physical therapists would introduce a home regimen of TrP in addition to the exercise plan for recovery and relief. Just an interesting anecdote - JK Rowling (author of Harry Potter series for the handful of those that might not know) has tweeted this year about having back pain that feels better when she digs into it with the corner of her sofa."
"I'm from Argentina so excuse me if I make some mistakes in writing this English since it is not my native language. Today I was recommending the Trigger Point Therapy to some friends over facebook, so looking for the link, I found the website, and suddenly I remembered. Years back I was diagnosed with a small, tiny displacement of a vertebra on my neck. I found a book about TMJ self treatments, and Amazon had an offer for the Trigger Point Therapy along with this one. And thanks to the AMAZING illustrations (I'm a graphic designer, so I can testify on their perfection) I decided to begin searching for the trigger point. My neck was feeling like before the roller coaster ride, I felt perfectly healthy and good. Every time myself or a family member experience this type of pain, I take my book out and teach them how to treat it."
"It is not a cure all, and definitely won't work for everything, but if you were buy one book on the subject of eliminating your musculoskeletal pain, this is it."
"Very helpful locating source of and relieving actual pain."
"One can gain both a broad and detailed understanding of Trigger Points including causation of pain, source vs. actual location of pain, and various manner of therapeutic treatment approaches and options."
"really good info!"
"Excellent book, however much too technical for me and probably for most people who need help with modalities."

I started the diet that day and the next morning my blood sugar was down to 100, the next day was in the 90's and now i have a fasting blood sugar between Mid 70's and the 80's. My doctor took me off the metformin after just one week of being on this lifestyle change."
"When I read the recipes in the back of the book I thought they were so radical that no one, unless they were, 'on death's doorstep', would eat that way. I was diagnosed with diabetes two years ago and since then, my life has been a rollercoaster between feeling awful and just fair. I'm also eating steel cut oats and taking red rice yeast. I see on his website you can sign up, for a nominal sum, and get additional recipes and recommendations, etc., personally, I think that's, 'milking', it but, that's just my opinion. When I began this way of eating, my blood sugar was 7.8 and my doctor wanted to start me on insulin...which I was VERY opposed to. AND, although I stick to it about 99% I do use olive oil when I want to, I eat grilled shrimp on a caesar salad smothered in grated cheese occasionally."

"I love how she gives you her story and reason for writing the book (it's not the normal introduction in my opinion- it's honest and personal); I love that she explains why certain foods or "foods" aren't good for our body (she did her research); and I love how she provides tools to help you transition to your whole foods journey (a self assessment, 10 day meal plan, goal sheet). Lastly, I enjoy her writing tone which makes it easier to read and take in all the health info. Other things that I appreciate in this book- Tia Tips and a look into common health topics like GMOs, dairy and calcium, iodine in table salt. Now, I haven't tried any recipes yet and I will be updating my review after I do, but they all look good, healthy and I hope they are tasty."
"This book is amazing, it is very informative (you can tell she did her research) and I love how she ties her personal journey into it."

Living Life to the Fullest with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome: Guide to Living a Better Quality of Life While Having EDS
As a physical therapist, he has developed an exercise protocol to help stabilized the many joint subluxations/dislocations associated with this genetic disorder.
Reviews
"About a year ago I had a doctor insist that I needed to go back to PT with the purpose of developing and implementing a full-body strengthening program. I begrudgingly went because he wouldn't drop it and lucked into seeing someone who understands connective tissue disorders and how to go about treating them. Unfortunately, we haven't been able to work on a full body preventative strengthening program because we have been dealing with multiple injuries. Negative: * The author makes it clear in his introduction that you are to use this book with a physical therapist. * He is also adamant that you need to follow the protocol of progression of exercises exactly, without skipping around to address things that hurt NOW (chronic injuries). On some level I understand this reasoning because dealing with a long string of chronic and new injuries is what has prevented me from figuring out a whole body program with my PT. As a patient, I think there needs to be a balance between keeping the chronic injuries under control and working on the preventative. To reach more people the author went through and also included a translation into normal person speak. In addition to the quality of the pictures, the model is wearing a baggy shirt and shorts that obscures his knees and elbows. * He states that you need to have a geneticist diagnose hypermobile EDS and then after the diagnosis you start the protocol and assemble your team. Those specialists did things and gave me information that immediately improved my quality of life. He gives instructions to the physical therapist on how they need to modify massage and mobilization techniques to avoid accidentally injuring you. I am going to have my PT double check my form on the exercises before I start doing them at home and I do plan to work through the protocol as it is written."
"so informative, really helps to navigate this illness and the therapy that can change your life."
"Its a great book."
"Fantastic info for strengthening the body and relieving pain."
"I'm working through this book with my physical therapist."
"It takes time, determination and commitment to follow up and do the exercises but they are not hard and do in time strengthen your muscles, thus allowing you to hold better."
"Well written for both EDS patients and a step by step protocol for PTs."
"Good exercise program for core and scapular stabilization."

Heal Your Headache
Based on the breakthrough understanding that virtually all headaches are forms of migraine--because migraine is not a specific type of headache, but the built-in mechanism that causes headaches of all kinds, along with neck stiffness, sinus congestion, dizziness, and other problems--Dr. Buchholz's Heal Your Headache puts headache sufferers back in control of their lives with a simple, transforming program. -- Howard Kirshner, M.D., Professor and Vice Chair, Department of Neurology, Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.
Reviews
"In the last five years, I have tried almost everything - traditional neurology treatments, acupuncture, cranial sacral massage, meditation, yoga, chiropractic, and even Botox. Most things would work for a short period of time (a few days to a few months, in the case of Botox, acupuncture, and chiropractic). In a moment of frustration, I put up a post on Facebook about how tired I was of these headaches interfering with my life; a friend responded with a link to this book. I started reading this book at home on a Saturday night of a week of bad headaches. I finally felt like someone out there believed what kind of pain I was in, in addition to 'odd' symptoms I was having (balance problems, inability to concentrate, bizarre feelings like my left arm was not part of my body, etc.). Once you start feeling relief, you realize following the diet is not much of a price to pay for getting your life back. Also, I have stopped feeling angry at my body and at the world for this suffering I've gone through - which is a big stress relief in itself."
"I purchased the 123 heal your headache book after years of terrible daily migraine pain. I followed the book as well as I could; the diet part is rather difficult and apparently I have no self control when it comes to food. I started feeling the same way and started eating what I wanted although the MSG part of the diet had become second nature, I am an avid label reader anyway. I am still on some medications to help prevent migraines and I am still VERY sesitive, but I am NOT suffering like I had been before reading this book."
"i purchased this book for my girlfriend who constantly gets headaches from multiple things, and they would happen at least 2-3 times a week."
"This book was very good - anyone with chronic migraines/headaches should read."
"I eagely read Heal Your Headache, as it had helped a friend deal with her migraine headaches.I was exasperated with doctors simply prescribing drugs and not addressing the root causes of my migraine headaches."

Hands of My Father: A Hearing Boy, His Deaf Parents, and the Language of Love
By turns heart-tugging and hilarious, Myron Uhlberg’s memoir tells the story of growing up as the hearing son of deaf parents—and his life in a world that he found unaccountably beautiful, even as he longed to escape it. “Does sound have rhythm?” my father asked. These worlds come together in this work, his first for adults, as Uhlberg, who has written several children's books (including Dad, Jackie, and Me , which won a 2006 Patterson Prize) effortlessly weaves his way through a childhood of trying to interpret the speaking world for his parents while trying to learn the lessons of life from the richly executed Technicolor language of his father's hands.
Reviews
"I can picture his father sitting at the table making paper hats from the New York Post every night and dancing with his Mother Sarah. The love in this book is nearly overwhelming - from the initial lack from their parents and then the author fills in the blanks from stories told so beautifully its as if you can see them playing before you in your own kitchen."
"It is a great book."
"Having been a French teacher for forty years I really enjoyed the author's detailed description of how beautiful and more descriptive sign language is than spoken languages are."
"I am deaf myself, this book helped me understand better what my children has been through even though we live in different times."
"As an ASL II student I found this story well told and very emotional."
"This is a story told by a virtually unknown master with a mighty heart, as well as an ability to craft the truth with the precision ordinarily discounted by the very use of language. A tale of a kid from Brooklyn, born during the darkest years of the Great Depression to a deaf Mom and Pop becomes a parable for the most universal, heartfelt yearnings, ambivalence and imaginings of which human consciousness is capable. As an infant born to two deaf parents the majesty of life, sound, linguistic nuance and sign language have been fused with a gifted story teller's mind to create one of the great surprises of my reading experience."
"To see the world through the eye's of a child of deaf parents is to see the world like no other."

Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease: The Revolutionary, Scientifically Proven, Nutrition-Based Cure
The New York Times bestselling guide to the lifesaving diet that can both prevent and help reverse the effects of heart disease Based on the groundbreaking results of his twenty-year nutritional study, Prevent. and Reverse Heart Disease by Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn illustrates that a plant-based, oil-free diet can not only prevent the progression of heart disease but can also reverse its effects. Caldwell Esselstyn has directed pioneering research demonstrating that the progression of even severe coronary heart disease can often be reversed by making comprehensive change in diet and lifestyle.“. —Dean Ornish, M.D, founder, president and director of Preventive Medicine Research Institute and author of Dr. Dean Ornish’s Program for Reversing Heart Disease. His focus on the healing powers of proper nutrition on diseased coronary arteries has now proven right, raising another unthinkable notion—that heart patients can cure themselves.”. —Bernadine Healy, M.D., former Director of the National Institutes of Health. “A hard nosed scientist shows us his secrets for successfully cleaning the rusting arteries of so many patients - and it doesn't even hurt.”. —Mehmet Oz, M.D., coauthor, You: The Owner’s Manual. Based on decades of research, Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn has shown not only how to prevent heart disease, but how to reverse it-even for people who have been affected for many years. Half of all Americans dying today could have changed their date with the undertaker by following Dr. Esselstyn’s plan.”. —Howard F. Lyman, author of No More Bull! Esselstyn's eminently successful arrest-and-reversal therapy for heart disease through patient education and empowerment as the treatment of choice will send shock waves through a mercenary medical system that focuses largely on pills and procedures.”. —Hans Diehl, Founder & Director of the Coronary Health Improvement Program (CHIP).
Reviews
"I accidently stumbled upon Dr. Esselstyn's research and recommendations when I was bed ridden with severe blood pressure which was getting worse by the day and I knew that it was just a matter of limited time before I expire."
"I have a gym in my garage, with pull-up tower and padded floor and TV/DVD player. In other words, I was in pretty good shape and thought I was OK. On April 8, 2013, I had just finished exercising. I noticed a slight numbness in my left arm. Told my wife to take me to the new heart hospital, conveniently located about 1 1/2 miles from my house. 45 minutes after walking into the ER, I was being wheeled into my room with 2 stents installed. The Cardiologist said that in my main artery, towards the center of my chest, I had 100% blockage. In the other main artery, on the other side of my heart, there is 50% blockage. I went to Amazon and looked for books on cardiovascular disease. My wife and I read the reviews and decided to give it a try. Since we started the plant eating lifestyle, she doesn't have stomach aches anymore. A friend of mine watched the Forks Over Knives documentary with his parents and they all decided to try it. At the start of the plant diet, his blood sugar was 253. After one week of plant eating he dropped 120 points! It works Yesterday my Cardiologist said that I am doing so great that he doesn't need to see me for 6 months!"
"Using the information in Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease, I now eat a plant-based diet, which I've been on for a couple of months now. My rule of thumb is this: If it had a mother and a father (beef, chicken, turkey, fish, etc. Since I've been eating plant-based foods only -- and there's a LOT to choose from -- my blood pressure has dropped, I've lost about 14 pounds, I sleep far more soundly, my thinking is clearer, I have more energy, etc. UPDATE: I've now lost 20 pounds, and another blood draw revealed that my cholesterol level has dropped 30 points."
"More people should read it before they find themselves needing to go to the doctor."
"Extreme diet for those with heart disease, can be followed rigorously by those who want to prevent heart disease (in my opinion)."
"My husband picked this book up while in the doctors office and began to read it, when we got home he ask if I would order him a copy."
"Great book and great recipes."

"I wanted a plan that followed sound nutritional guidelines and had some research to back it up. Marla does a great job of explaining why the things I learned about nutrition in my 20s aren't working for me in my 40s, and then lays out, clearly, concisely, and with menus and recipes, what *will* work...and it did. In the 3 months I've been on this plan I started a new job; celebrated my anniversary, Halloween, my birthday, & Thanksgiving, and now find myself surrounded by all the Christmas treats...and still find it easier than it's ever been to make conscious choices about what I eat."
"I had SO much success on phase one, I was afraid to move on and reintroduce fruit and whole grains to my diet so I remained on it for another 2 weeks. I did not do the exercise as recommended in the book due to very low energy levels, but imagine that if I had, I would have lost more weight."

The book is written by Sue Shepherd, PhD, an Australian nutritionist who was instrumental in developing the low-FODMAP diet, and by Peter Gibson, MD, a gastroenterologist at Monash University in Australia, which continues to do a lot of research on IBS and the low-FODMAP diet. IBS symptoms are largely caused by intolerance. The attitude toward SIBO seems obtuse after a while, as the authors claim that the symptoms of IBS are caused by fermentation, by bacteria, of indigestible sugars but dismiss the idea that there are problematic bacteria there. The meat of the book is the tables of what foods you can and cannot eat, depending on which sugars you're not tolerating. It is recommended that people with IBS follow the low-FODMAP diet strictly for 2 months, then introduce some other foods one at a time to test tolerance. I should warn you that the diet is very restrictive in that there are very few vegetables you can eat and fruit is also limited, more in quantity but less in variety than vegetables. To give you an idea, I have 60 vegetable soups in my repertoire, and only 14 are low-FODMAP -and that isn't even considering onions and garlic, for which I substitute oils. But the low-FODMAP diet relieves symptoms in 75% of those with IBS. Unlike most medical diets, low-FODMAP restricts foods that are your primary sources of nutrition, not only filler foods like grains, sugar, and dairy products. There is no mention of IBS symptoms that are not confined to the GI tract, namely neurological and inflammatory symptoms. Also no mention that all of this fermentation of non-absorbed saccharides increases the permeability of the intestinal wall, causing some nasty systemic symptoms that are more alarming than IBS. I substitute ½ teaspoon garlic oil for 1 clove garlic and 2 tablespoons onion oil for 1 large onion."
"Well written and laid out."
"It gives all you need to implement the diet - what foods to eat at first, and what to reintroduce once you are at a healthy-feeling baseline."
"The authors did a good job of explaining the science behind the diet."
"Excellent recipes and excellent information and history about what causes the digestive issue that required a FODMAP diet."
"This book is just what I was looking for."
"Not just this book, but many others that are available cause much confusion.....I will just go back and eat unprocessed food."
"The meal plans in the back contain tons of highly-processed recommendations and assume that "gluten-free" options are going to be just fine without giving further information on what to look for in the gluten-free labels. Many of the recipes in the back are packed with sugar and there are no breakfast recipes in the back--not very helpful."

"I have read just about every Lupus book out there--from memoir to treatise, from books aimed at neophytes to those targeted at the experienced patient. And (unlike other Lupus books) anyone who treats Lupus patients--as a physician or nurse--should also read it. I do like that Dr. Thomas has not watered down his book as other physicians do, and that he assumes that Lupus patients can choose to read those sections or not."
"This book has incredible detail and as much as I've learned about lupus over the years, this book taught me things I never knew."
"Filled with everything you need to know about lupus and how to fight it."
"Great to those diagnosed and their family members."
"Wow, total comprehensive guide."
"Both my children have Lupus, (17 year old daughter, diagnosed at 15 and 22 year old son, diagnosed one month ago)."
"Well-written and thorough about the disease and how to deal with it with lifestyle changes and supplements."

"Even though I'm definitely NOT grateful for having this disease, I truly believe my loved ones, future children and I obtained the most valuable information we have come across as a consequence of my MS. In this book, Dr Wahls goes into detail about every aspect of the dietary and lifestyle changes she recommends, which includes supplements, exercise, electrical stimulation, meditation, etc., and she details three different versions of the Wahls diet so anyone can find a level they can learn to live with. I actually convinced my wife and my mother to read the book and follow different levels of the protocol with me for one month. It has been three weeks today, and the results have been noticeable: - I have RRMS, and am still in early stages of the disease so when I'm in remission, which is 90% of the time, I have no symptoms. She feels a lot more rested and the Polar Loop is actually measuring and showing these results as concrete data. Additionally, she used to get headaches at work about once a week, and hasn't had a single one since following the Wahls Paleo. I have now read many other books by Sarah Ballantyne, Dr. Perlmutter, Amy Myers, Jimmy Moore, etc., I have found countless Blogs and Cookbooks, and I even have iOS Apps that make my life way easier (MyPaleoPal is excellent for tracking and ideas, for example). I now enjoy eating and even cooking more than I ever had before, and my entire family is still reaping the benefits from all this knowledge. Just to detail a bit more: I follow the Wahls Paleo Plus diet, mixed together with the AIP just to make it a little more challenging. This means no nuts, seeds, nightshades, or coffee, on top of Dr Wahls' strictest protocol. I also swim every other day, meditate and work my core muscles daily, and sleep 7.5-8.5 hours every night. You be the judge: my last relapse was over a year ago, I can now bike for 45minutes and totally withstand heat sensitivity, I can swim for as long as I want to, I walked over 120,000 steps in a week last december during Christmas break (used a pedometer to keep track), I'm sleeping like a baby, and, MOST IMPORTANT: I stopped my MS medication two weeks ago (under my neurologist's supervision of course, and having sworn to go back on it if my status changes negatively)."
"The book is so easy to read, and it is set up pretty much the way I spent my first year changing my diet. I loved reading Chapter 7 - Wahls Paleo Plus, because that is the way I basically eat now, strictly and consistently. This new book is an easier read, but still full of Dr. Wahls passion for sharing this vital information, and getting it right. Her life is at stake, and she wants to help as many people as she can - in my opinion, it is obvious that this book is a true labor of love for her. I rarely left the house, except for appointments that I couldn't put off any longer, or family celebrations with the our grown kids. My husband, whose busy career took much of his time, did the best he could, which meant my diet was mostly easy processed food or take-out. A few weeks after I sold/gave my beloved Prius to my son, my daughter urged me to look into some doctor that had MS and wrote a book about how she healed herself with diet. I had a slight increase in energy, and cleaned a tiny spot of kitchen counter between the sink and the coffee maker. I had stopped eating white potatoes, and soon started avoiding soy, legumes all processed and packaged foods. After a year, a friend offered to drive me to the gym again, so I started working out a bit, and she helped me move between machines. Finally I started taking my walker, and then made my husband buy a car so I could have his Prius - I needed my independence back, and I was ready. My gym workouts were good for a while but I began to hurt myself; I could barely remember how to walk, because my body was so messed up. I started working with a personal trainer at the gym, after he actually convinced me that he could wake up my severely weakened muscles, when giving me a free hour-long evaluation where I could not even do a squat, or get up from the floor. I can now do a deadlift with 115 pound weight, I can squat, carry bags of groceries upstairs, and take many different classes at the gym, with modifications, such as Zumba, spinning, step, yoga, Pilates, and I love to walk outside to get the fresh air and sunshine. I finally bought a Vitamix (I stopped juicing - I want the nutrients in my body) and I still use it every single day for getting a huge amount of veggies and berries. I had been on weight loss diets all my life, and that was a struggle, because I could never shake my addiction to sweets, carbs, etc. Terry also talks about the importance of moving our bodies and having strong emotional bonds with the people in our lives. That last one has been harder for me in the last year, and the stress of it taught me a lot about how my body reacts to negative thoughts in my mind."
