The monks also look well beyond surface training techniques to analyze the roots of dogs' problems and explain how training can help.
Reviews
"Peek into a fascinating, behind the scenes exploration of the philosophy & strategies successfully used by the Monks in acclaimed German Shepherd rearing & training."
"Very nice."
"But after reading this book, I know exactly what kind of owner I want to be, how I want to raise my new puppy and the relationship I want to foster for the years to come!"
"i.e. Raising a puppy in a city ( not my issue but nice to have it ), bringing a puppy into a house with another dog, suggestions on equipment, etc."
"I think often times people aren't aware of the necessary work that is required to raise a behaviorally healthy puppy, and we aren't aware of why some behavior problems develop in dogs."
"as many dog owners know, it''s very easy to have the best of intensions and make unhappy mistakes that become very difficult to undo."
"I've owned many dogs, fostered litters and shelter dogs, and preparing to bring home only my second-ever forever puppy."
"It is clear the Monks of New Skete sincerely mean well, however their lack of knowledge and training skills is evident in their books. A few of the glaring problems with the books are: They state rightly that it is normal and “to expect some whining this first night” from your new puppy when you go to bed. A better course of action would be for the Monks to structure things so as to prevent unnecessary possessiveness and aggression in the puppies during this extremely sensitive time, when the effects of these experiences are permanent. Leadership doesn't require you to turn into a food container and act like a PEZ dispenser, nor do you need a “behavior science” degree. There are dogs with strong personalities that require a committed leader to maintain control, but the Monks training tools and harsh methods are unnecessary. For a better approach to the housetraining and feeding issues noted above read “The Dog Vinci Code - Chapter 4 “Early Behavioural Development”. With regards to the advice in the “Discipline and Common Puppy Problems” on forcefully dealing with the five-month-old male German shepherd that growls at guests, start with chapter 42, page 247 “Understanding Aggression” and then move to chapter 44, page 260 “Fear and Aggression” for a better approach to dealing with such behavior. For more insight on dealing with a dog that growls, read page 215 in “Bones Would Rain From The Sky” by Suzanne Clothier. Read her book “Bones Would Rain From The Sky” chapter 17 if you want to understand how and when to apply compulsion or coercion if/when persuasion has reached its limits. Suzanne Clothier has been working with animals professionally since 1977, with a deep background of experience that includes obedience, agility, puppy testing, breeding, Search and Rescue, conformation, instructing, kennel management and canine midwifery."

Reviews
"In fact, it would be great if folks would read these books BEFORE making the final decision to get a dog or puppy, as the Monks do a great job of describing in a realistic way, the commitment of time, money and energy needed to have a happy, healthy canine family member. The dogs are expected to lay near the desk or be present at the Brother's workspace, and move about the monastery while they go about their chores. I also use the monks method of having the puppy "tethered" to me (a leash clipped to my belt loop) and having him get used to following me around as I move around the house during the day."
"I like how the authors acknowledge tougher topics in training and recommend that the readers seek other advice before making up your mind on what is best for you."
"An informative and touching enough account for any animal lover."
"A must have for dog lovers and dog trainers."
"Everyone in the family is reading and following this book to train our new puppy."
"The monks of New Skete have been training dogs for a long time, and their methods are both humane and correct."
"It covers exactly what is needed to train a dog to not only to be obedient to you and see you as the 'pack leader', but to be the best companion dog for you."
"We started it with our adult rescue dog about 3 weeks ago and already he's learning to heel, can loose leash walk, and is well behaved while running with me."

The Art of Raising a Puppy (Revised Edition)
This new edition of The Art of Raising a Puppy features new photographs throughout, along with updated chapters on play, crating, adopting dogs from shelters and rescue organizations, raising dogs in an urban environment, and the latest developments in canine health and canine behavioral theory. The excellent instruction begins with an in-depth examination of the puppies of one litter from birth through their eventual placements with new owners-- following their social and physical development, their needs, and clues to their emerging personalities. Proposing that the best way to forge a healthy dog-to-owner bond is to prevent problems before they occur, the authors soundly emphasize that a puppy begins its training "the day it arrives home." They teach readers how to choose an appropriate breed and a promising puppy, and how to assume the position of "pack" leader from the start. Sensitive and unimpeachably humane, this handbook places equal stress on the time-consuming responsibilities of dog ownership and on its ultimate rewards.

"I completely recommend this book (and also recommend reading more of a dog training manual along side it). The monks, as you might imagine, are more philosophical than other dog training books, this one is less of a manual and more of an education."

The Inner Life of Animals: Love, Grief, and Compassion―Surprising Observations of a Hidden World
In this, his latest book, Peter Wohlleben follows the hugely successful The Hidden Life of Trees with insightful stories into the emotions, feelings, and intelligence of animals around us. ...Wohlleben’s words are bound to touch even the animal-emotion skeptic". — Washington Post , Jennifer S. Holland, author of Unlikely Friendships. "With the same charm and clarity that drew so many readers to The Hidden Life of Trees, Peter Wohlleben has produced another gem . I found delight on every page, thanks to the author’s rare skill at blending scientific discoveries with his own wealth of insightful personal experiences . Surprising, humbling, and filled with delight , this book shows us that animals think, feel and know in much the same way as we do—and that their lives are, to them, as precious as ours are to us."
Reviews
"The novelty of the Hidden Life of Trees, Peter Wohlleben's last book, was the author's ability to combine scientific discoveries with personal insight and anecdote to describe how truly animate trees actually are. While always hewing to a necessary humility about the limits of our scientific knowledge of animals, Wohlleben weaves the best of scientific findings with personal anecdotes of the animals in his forest which illustrate and develop what otherwise could be cold and esoteric research. We are story-telling creatures after all and Wohlleben has discovered a formula for writing scientific books that are both popular and informative."
"Sure to be a best seller, his first book written about trees sold 320,000 copies before being translated into English, The Inner LIfe of Animals leaves the reader with a clear understanding that animals share many psychological and social characteristics with people. Buy the book and enjoy a heckeva good read."
"I was delighted to discover that there was a follow-up to "The Hidden Life of Trees.""
