Furhman states over and over that animal products are bad for the human body, toxic to the liver, great for cancer and fat, bad for humans. I just had a cheese sandwich - luscious bread, too much cheese, swiss and cheddar, some lettuce, a bit of processed turkey, mayo, mustard, italian dressing. I didn't give it 5 stars because it is so restrictive - but that is not necessarily bad, I'm just kinda weak battling my food demons."

"This looks a bit like some sort of infomercial but I promise you I'm not getting paid for this, and these questions are a big summary of the ones I've been getting for the past 6 weeks. In short, it is six weeks of vegan food with no booze, caffeine, salt, or fat. That means no olive oil, nuts, or fatty things that are still good for you like avocados. After 6 weeks you transition to a diet that can include meat and alcohol plus days where you can eat whatever the heck you want. It kind of blows my mind that I still don't look the way I want and I had 24 pounds on TOP of that. Dinner varied and I learned to cook a lot of different things and make extra for leftovers. You're allowed a little bit of bread now and then (as well as some starchy vegetables) so I never got massive carb cravings or anything. I spent 4 hours cooking his "famous" anti-cancer soup and if I never have that crap again I'll be a happy man. So I bought the fat free balsamic vinagrette at Trader Joe's ate that with all of my salads (only 25 calories per serving). I probably had a pinch more salad and fat because of it but it was worth it to me to have food that tasted normal. Some Ethiopian and Indian places had barely passable options but that was mainly with my eyes closed pretending that there was only a bit of oil in them. It also takes a really objective look at other diets which, in the end, made me not want to try them. 3) I was never hungry. 4) It gave me a lot of tools I can use the rest of my life to make better and more informed decisions. I know this whole things sounds ridiculous and corny, but I've really never felt so damn awesome and enthusiastic before. Mind you, I'm dying for a martini, but in the end six weeks wasn't the worst thing in the world."

"Every cardiologist I have been to over the years within the first 10-15 minutes of a consultation the cardiologist is closing hard on scheduling me for a medical procedure. I have had reasonably low cholesterol (150-180) my whole life but also struggled with high liver enzymes my whole adult life too (and not a drinker), yet when I would ask cardiologists about the side effects of taking the heart related drugs (beta blockers & statons) they would be almost outright perturbed I'd even have the gull to ask about these things. He also referred me to a local cardiologist where guess what...the exact same thing happened only this cardiologist was more rude than most and was clearly insulted I'd even ask any single question. Shortly after that less than positive consultation, I was searching on Amazon for Paleo products and happened to search the words "Paleo Cardiologist" and The Paleo Cardiologist book popped into my screen. Many of the things Dr Jack Wolfson said in the book and his recommendations were similar to what I had already researched and lined up with what my own alternative doctor told me. I was actually shocked there was any cardiologist on the planet who might prescribe an alternate path to health other than stent(s), open heart surgery and/or a slew of drugs with side effects. It wasn't easy at the beginning and I am till learning and making changes but I have been following the Paleo lifestyle, supplements and many of the lifestyle changes outlined in this book. ""The Complete Low-FODMAP Diet: A Revolutionary Plan for Managing IBS and Other Digestive Disorders" lays out the principles for a diet to control the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome as well as help for non-responsive celiacs and those with IBD whose symptoms may be aggravated by sensitivity to FODMAPs. The book is written by Sue Shepherd, PhD, an Australian nutritionist who was instrumental in developing the low-FODMAP diet, and by Peter Gibson, MD, a gastroenterologist at Monash University in Australia, which continues to do a lot of research on IBS and the low-FODMAP diet. IBS symptoms are largely caused by intolerance. The attitude toward SIBO seems obtuse after a while, as the authors claim that the symptoms of IBS are caused by fermentation, by bacteria, of indigestible sugars but dismiss the idea that there are problematic bacteria there. The meat of the book is the tables of what foods you can and cannot eat, depending on which sugars you're not tolerating. It is recommended that people with IBS follow the low-FODMAP diet strictly for 2 months, then introduce some other foods one at a time to test tolerance. I should warn you that the diet is very restrictive in that there are very few vegetables you can eat and fruit is also limited, more in quantity but less in variety than vegetables. To give you an idea, I have 60 vegetable soups in my repertoire, and only 14 are low-FODMAP -and that isn't even considering onions and garlic, for which I substitute oils. But the low-FODMAP diet relieves symptoms in 75% of those with IBS. Unlike most medical diets, low-FODMAP restricts foods that are your primary sources of nutrition, not only filler foods like grains, sugar, and dairy products. There is no mention of IBS symptoms that are not confined to the GI tract, namely neurological and inflammatory symptoms. Also no mention that all of this fermentation of non-absorbed saccharides increases the permeability of the intestinal wall, causing some nasty systemic symptoms that are more alarming than IBS. I substitute ½ teaspoon garlic oil for 1 clove garlic and 2 tablespoons onion oil for 1 large onion."
