The New Old House: Historic & Modern Architecture Combined
Projects and firms featured include Greenwich House, Allan Greenberg; Longbranch, Jim Olson; Astley Castle, Witherford Watson Mann; Hunsett Mill, Acme; Cotswolds House, Richard Found; plus more than a dozen others. ( Architectural Digest ). Kristal’s book also goes far beyond the average coffee table tome, in that project descriptions are rich with insider insight and a genuine interest in the history and processes that shaped each project.… The New Old House is a very welcome insight into a strand of architecture that deserves far more than second tier status. ( The World of Interiors ). “In his book The New Old House: Historic & Modern Architecture Combined , Marc Kristal features homes that have beautifully blended new and old architecture, and demonstrates how to change up your own historic home by introducing modern fixtures.”.
Reviews
"Architecture is fundamentally relational; its significance emanates from its engagement with the world. This includes its physical context, or site; its social context, or program; and its material context, or construction."
"Marc Kristal is clearly a gifted writer and natural storyteller, and what he does is tell the stories of how architects didn’t just reinvent the old houses featured in this book, they reimagined how they could become homes again, for real people. Here’s an example of a line I really liked: “Few things are more personal, or more emotional, than the idea of home, and an old house can speak to us on what the novelist Ralph Ellison called “the lower frequencies” – those aspects of our nature, as often as not unconscious, that are attracted to certain engagements because of the possibilities they present.”."
"This quote from the introduction is my favorite, with its deeply personal tone and call-to-thought that carries throughout the following pages (with truly magnificent illustrations): "On my desk, as I write, are the tools of my trade -- elements belonging to the here and now -- and reminders of the past..." Kristal continues to take the reader into each home and neighborhood featured in such a gentle, mind-opening way that it makes it almost impossible not to want to meet him in person so that he can share all the other secrets that surely hide up his global architectural sleeve..."
"Marc Kristal clearly knows his architectural history and theory, but unlike many books about design and architecture, Kristal captures the reader's imagination with his virtuoso writing."
"the book is a beautiful balance of excellent writing and intelligent design."
"We have an new old house, so it has been wonderful to look at pictures and get inspired by all the great way sot adapt, re-use and update our house without losing the charm."
"A staple for all architects who love combining old with new."

Cadillac Desert: The American West and Its Disappearing Water, Revised Edition
"The definitive work on the West's water crisis." "Essential background reading for anyone who cares about the drought ravaging the West and the region's prospects for changing course before it is too late." Resiner captures Western water history in Cinemascope and Technicolor. Beautifully written and meticulously researched, it spans our century-long effort to moisten the arid West. Anyone thinking of moving west of the hundredth meridian should read this book before they call their real estate agent." "A revealing, absorbing, often amusing and alarming report on where billions of [taxpayers'] dollars have gone-- and where a lot more are going .
Reviews
"This is a timeless work detailing the history of water wealth and distribution in the West."
"Man this book is encyclopedic, with all that implies."
"While the editing causes some revisiting of projects ant times, this book gives a clear picture of the technical, economic, political, and bureaucratic forces surrounding the largest group of public works in American history."
"I recommend this book to anyone wanting to understand the history of the water "crisis" or has the least bit of interest in our nation's history!"
"It is not a perfect work: the author occasionally allows his passion to overwhelm his recounting of the facts, and it detracts from both his case and the flow of the book."
"It's easy to call all cities in the American West "cancers", and state or imply how and how much the West should've been settled, based on 20/20 hindsight and without thought for where settlers could've gone if every inch West of the 100th meridian had been settled only by a very limited number of environmentally prophetic, conscientious stewards."
"Between this book and the "King of California" a very concise history of water in the lands west of the Mississippi and then west of Sierra Nevada Mountains is painted and highlighted with political and bureaucratic bumbling that has lead to the "crisis" that lives on today."
"Although written in 1986, revised and updated in 1993, it is a useful source of history and a means of understanding how we got ourselves into the difficulties we are now facing."

The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing
The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing Japanese organizational consultant Marie Kondo takes tidying to a whole new level, promising that if you properly declutter your home once, you'll never have to do it again.
Reviews
"I grew up in a cluttered house and married the King of Clutter (he's the type of person who'll open a credit card bill, pay it online, and then just leave the empty envelope, inserts, and bill itself randomly strewn on whatever surface happens to be nearby). It's a breath of fresh air and positive energy that brings real joy to the process of "tidying up." My clothes are all mine (which also means that they're in nowhere near as terrible a state as other things in my house), so going through them affects only me and involves only my own feelings. Her advice may sound silly at first, but if your belongings inspire feelings of unhappiness, guilt, etc., her anthropomorphism of them can really help you change your viewpoint in a positive direction. That is likely to carry a different level of meaning for someone in Japan than in the U.S. Other references to spiritual practice and feng-shui are not likely to resonate the same way for an American audience. There is a lot of discussion of travel toiletries, but very little about kitchen utensils, toys, or other items found most often in a family home. I'm now a week in, and 6 months seems like hardly enough time to tackle all the junk in my house, but I can fully see how this can be a life-changing process."
"I was browsing Pinterest one day and stumbled upon the "konmari method" and was intrigued, so I bought this book for kindle and read it in about an hour. I always thought I was a very organized person (because everything I owned had a designated, labelled place and my house was always super clean), but after reading this book I realized I was nothing more than a skilled hoarder. I probably discarded well over 100 bags of clutter in that 6 weeks and earned over $400 selling the big-ticket items via social media, which I used to make my house prettier."

"Remember that time you read Walden your sophomore year and vowed you'd stop wearing deodorant and live a life closer to nature only to get sucked into that marketing internship because Uncle Bob owed your mom and favor and now you're an account executive at a nameless corporation that you secretly hate and every now and then you look wistfully out the window and dream of what it would be like to live (you know like really live, man) out in the forest where you chop wood and catch fish and make moonshine and wear clothes that last forever never go out of style and you wake up at dawn and howl at the moon at night and your house is this beautiful cabin that you built yourself with a pot of strong coffee on the stove and dried elk meat in the storehouse and you have everything you ever wanted as you puff your pipe on the porch during a warm summer night and you breath the cool air and the fireflies illuminate the dusk and you pause and you remember the exact instant when you decided to press reset on your old life and start over again."
