So I was hopeful this book would not only provide a sort of guide map for selecting high quality foods, but would also either reassure me that the organic brand is worth while, or dissuade me from spending the extra cash on organic labeled products. I think this book speaks more to the food preferences of Mr. Olmstead than a more comprehensive treatment of the thousands of food products you'll find in a typical grocery store. "He covers quite a few different food items, including beef, seafood, cheese, alcoholic drinks--even fruit juice. The frauds are especially concentrated in "special foods which for the first time in 2014 topped one hundred billion dollars in the United States. This category is rife with scams, including many foods viewed as healthier choices, as well as fancy cheeses, meats, oils, and other “gourmet” items." For example, he spends a lot of time documenting how "Parmesan" Cheese sold in the U.S. is so much different than the actual, original product. He notes how he made numerous efforts to try to get the FDA to pay attention--but they refused to even grant him an interview, despite their promises. "Federal regulations require (as in mandatory, not optional) the FDA to inspect less than 2 percent of imported seafood , hardly a rigorous analysis . This book introduced me to two concepts that were critical: Functional medicine, and Hashimoto's Gluten sensitivity. This led to several significant changes. The second came when I started looking for functional medicine doctors in Austin, TX and following the supplementation suggestions put forward in this book. Empty Stomach (AM): - Licorice drops. - Probiotic. - Saccharomyces Boulardii. Lunch: - Glutamine. - Methyl B12 (my Dr suspects a MTHFR gene mutation; regular B12 wasn't helping but this works great). - NAC. - Zinc (this was huge for me; gave me lots more energy). - Selenium. Bedtime: - Magnesium. - CoQ10. - Probiotic. - Fish Oil w/vitamin D. Many of these don't have to be taken with food and the order could be switched up. I'd recommend chatting with your doctor about lab work for vitamin deficiencies and reading Dr. Wentz's supplement guide."

I'm so thrilled to have this book, it still seems too good to be true! :). I would suggest though, if there is ever a second printing, and an updated version, that the author include more advice/info on finding a good functional/integrative/holistic Dr. to work with, which testing is available and from which labs, how to navigate testing solo or with your Dr., etc."

This book teaches you how to change your body from a sugar-burner to a fat burner, which is what you are when you are in ketosis. Ketosis is when your body no longer is using carbs as its fuel source but fat. This book showed me that fat is integral for your success of achieving ketosis and proper fat-burning. Once in a while I will get hungry and want to turn to a quick carb anything but have learned to have nuts, cheese, etc. I do not crave sugar that much anymore and if I do I have learned incredible replacement recipes that take care of it. Here are some interesting things I have eaten and even adapted "my own" versions from: Buttered Coffee!! Peanut butter shake, chocolate covered nuts, my adaptation of one recipe is lemon coconut chocolate cheesecake....this is so good and it does not taste "diet" at all!! Its easy recipes have allowed me to immediately start this way of eating unlike some other books where you have to build up a huge food list before you can really begin."

"I have done low carb in the past and experienced good short term results but this feels different. I purchased the ketosis test sticks on amazon (about $10) and on about my 6th day it was a medium color purple. That's obviously really good (I don't care if its water weight--it is 11 lbs less i'm hauling around), but what is more satisfying is how hunger and cravings go away. I think what helped me get into moderate ketosis is that I cut out all added sugar immediately and all flour. My goal is net 40 grams of carbs, but I'm probably closer to 30grams (I track everything on an online app). My diet has consisted mainly of the following (prepared varioius ways for different meals) eggs, avocado,berries, hemp protein powder, olives, olive oil, mct oil, beef/chicken/fish, macadamia nuts, pumpkin/sunflower seeds riced cauliflower/broccoli, kale/spinach, onions and garlic and spices. I do an 18 hr fast each day (6pm-Noon) and eating as recommended in the book makes it easy."
