Best Cruise Travel Reference
Europe's majestic port cities are at your fingertips with Rick Steves Mediterranean Cruise Ports. Since 1973, Rick has spent about four months a year exploring Europe.
Reviews
Find Best Price at Amazon"Overview of Anne Vipond's 6th edition of "Mediterranean by Cruise Ship" (AV): I found AV to be very informative and it was very helpful to actually see some of the attractions and sites on this cruise in brilliant color. But there isn't a "DK Eyewitness Mediterranean Cruise Port" book, so you'd have to buy a separate book for each port to get the same general coverage and attractive glossy color photo layout. AV's Table of Contents (and starting page numbers). Forward page by author. Part One: General Information: - Choosing your cruise (starting page 10), including chapters on: Shore Excursions; Land Tours. - Preparing for your cruise (20). - Life aboard a cruise ship (26). - Natural phenomena (38). - History of the Mediterranean (42), including chapters on: Ancient Mariners; Ancient Egypt; Ancient Greece; The Roman Empire; The Renaissance; The Grand Tour; Modern Mediterranean. - Art & Architecture (80). - Mediterranean Gardens (103). Part Two. Portugal (starting page 106). Spain (includes Gibraltar) (116). The South of France (148). Northern Italy (176). Southern Italy (212). Croatia (and Montenegro) (246). Mainland Greece (256). The Greek Isles (276). Turkey, The Black Sea, & Cyprus (302). Egypt & The Holy Land (336). Malta, Tunisia, & Morocco (348). Glossary of Cruise Lines (365). Index (365). Color pull out map (with walking maps on the reverse side) (369). ------------------------. Overview of Rick Steve's 3rd edition of "Mediterranean Cruise Ports" (RS). The word "tome" was invented to describe books such as this. Also, don't do what I did and buy those $1.99 Kindle books on specific sites in Rome (e.g., the Pantheon); waste of money, since they are also included in this book. RS's Table of Contents (and starting page numbers). Color maps across two pages each (Europe; Barcelona; Florence; Rome; Venice; Dubrovnik; Athens; Istanbul's Old Town). Introduction (starting page 1). Part I: Choosing and Booking a Cruise (11). Part II: Travel Skills (45), including: Before Your Cruise; On the Ship; In Port; Part III: Mediterranean Cruise Ports (143). Spain: Barcelona (149). France: - Provence (243); specific chapters include: Port of Marseilles; Port of Toulon; Marseille; Cassis; Aix-en-Provence. - The French Riviera (297); specific chapters include: Nice; Villefranche-sur-Mer; Monaco; Cannes; Antibes; More Sights on the French Riviera. Italy: - Florence, Pisa, Lucca, and the Port of Livorno (375). - Rome and the Port of Civitavecchia (489). - Naples, Sorrento, and Capri (615): in addition, includes chapters on Pompeii; Herculaneum; Almafi Coast. - Venice (705). Croatia: - Split (803). - Dubrovnik (837). Greece: Athens and the Port of Piraeus (885); Mykonos (979); Santorini (1005) and includes Fira, Oia, and More Sights on Santorini. More Ports in Greece (1029); includes Corfu; Olympia and the Port of Katakolo; Crete and the Port of Heraklion; Rhodes. Turkey: Istanbul (1085); Ephesus and the Port of Kusadasi (1205); in addition, includes chapters on House of the Virgin Mary; Selcuk. Appendix: Tourist Information (1241); Telephoning (1242); Transportation (1243); Resources (1248); Holidays and Festivals (1250); Conversions and Climate (1251). Index (1254). Map Index (1273). ------------------------. Comparing the two books: AV and RS are significantly different in format and content, but they complement each other. Almost a third of this book's 350 pages (104 pages) concern the history and geography of the Mediterranean region; the introductory section in RS is similarly long (140 pages) BUT it accounts for only 11% of the total 1,250 pages of content! Comparing the actual cruise port sections, AV has 251 pages devoted to all of the cruise ports and sites, whereas RS devotes 427 pages to Italy alone; AV's section on Italy is only 69 pages. Neither book will be easy to lug around the ports and sites; Rick Steves actually encourages you to break his book apart and just take just the relevant sections along with you on your excursions."
"Excellent book especially as you can divide it up and not carry around the whole book.Covers all the ports I will be visiting in July/August and will help in booking excursions from the boat or looking at getting around on public transport."
"This book was indispensable for our recent Mediterranean cruise and I felt that our DIY port stops were just as fun and informative as the port stops where we used a tour."
"We also enjoyed using the book to learn how to pronounce important common phrases in Spanish, French, Italian, Greek, and Turkish."
"Not expecting too much, since the Rick Steve's philosophy tends toward enjoying the adventure of meeting people and new cultures rather than bombing through a town in 4 hours, I was pleasantly surprised to find this to be one of his team's best offerings."
"We have traveled extensively in Europe and relied on Rick Steves various guidebooks, with great success."
"Not a fan of Steves' strident politics, but he knows his cruise ports."

Find Best Price at Amazon"As soon as I learned that I'd spend a week in Budapest (mostly on business), I went to the public library to take out a few guidebooks (DK's Top 10 Budapest, Rick Steves Budapest, and Fodor's 25 Best Budapest). I ended up buying the Kindle version of the Rick Steves book. I'm a bit surprised at how few of the Amazon reviews actually speak to the usefulness of the guidebooks; most of them seem to be written by people who read the books before the trip rather than reporting on the books' helpfulness on the city streets. Top 10 Budapest: As with the others in this series, the fits-in-your-purse book has plenty of pretty photos, lots of clear maps, walking tours ("a day in the Castle District and North Buda"), and the promised Top 10 lists, from overall sights (Parliament, St Stephen's Basilica, etc.). Fodor's 25 Best Budapest: This book, too, is a short-and-sweet overview to the city, emphasizing the most popular sights, with good maps and photos. Instead of trying to fit everything into a tiny book (which necessarily limits how many things to include and how much to say), Steves' book shares a lot of detail, with real storytelling -- as if you had a (semi)-local telling you about his city. If I had to do it again, I'd get both the Rick Steves book AND the Fodor's guide -- the latter, perhaps, in the paper version, as it's light enough to put in your day pack."
"The book does a great job of listing places to visit, where to sleep, eat, the exciting night life, cultural events and other attractions in Budapest by district."
"We used it extensively to get off the beaten path and see some interesting sites."
"I normally find that it takes more than one guidebook to get the info I want during my visits because I try to have a good predetermined sequence in mind of POI's so I can maximize my weekend time off."
"Rick Steve's books are an indispensable asset to any trip!"
"Another great Rick Steves travel book which provides all the detailed information you need to have a great trip to Budapest."
"Excellent and the supplements for places to see outside Budapest were especially helpful."

"Anyway, buy the book before you go but also buy Dixon Long's "Markets of Paris" - there is so much about Paris, it's impossible to overdo the preparation!"
"I can't say enough good things about this book."
"The book comes with a few pre-planned itineraries for a short 3 day trip and a longer trip, which with a little thought, can be customized to fit your schedule and desires. The guidebook covered common tourist scams, two of which were attempted on me which I easily avoided (friendship bracelet and found ring)."
"I read it over before going and it has lots of good information like when to go where, what days time etc. The only thing that I would double check before leaving for Paris or when in Paris is if the days certain places are open. at least 3 hours of waiting!"
"I did my best to read the book before leaving and plan the trip out ahead of time, but it was also extremely useful at the hotel to help finalize the next day's plans, and even once in awhile to have it out with me during the day in case my memory failed me or we changed our plans on-the-fly."
"Rick Steves is a real-live "regular" traveler, who understands that most of us don't stay at the Ritz Carlton, don't eat at 3-star Michelin restaurants, and that we crave authentic travel experiences."
"But it is terrible--bare minumum of info, often misleading or missing info (for instance not mentioning the existence, let alone whereabouts, of a famous restaurant in Paris, but only its satellite location out at Versailles)."

More than 125 recipes, framed with stories and photographs of people and places, introduce us to a culinary paradise where ancient legends and ruins rub shoulders with new beginnings—where a wealth of history and culinary traditions makes it a compelling place to read about for cooks and travelers and for anyone hankering to experience the food of a wider world. Through rich storytelling and recipes from her travels, Duguid explores the culinary heritage that unites Iran, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Kurdistan.” —Food & Wine “Brilliant. One of the most excitingly accessible books of the season, combining nuanced diasporic traditions, straightforward recipes and easy-to-find ingredients.” —USA Today “In lieu of a Persian grandmother . With one foot in the old world and one in the new, Ms. Duguid does a beautiful job of translating complex concoctions into accurate, easy-to-follow recipes that reflect not just the flavors but the spirit of the countries that once made up the Persian Empire. —The Wall Street Journal “For years [Naomi Duguid] has been writing deep-dive books with a photographic National Geographic bent and recipes that work. Duguid captures dishes that reflect history and culture while being simply what’s on the table.” — The Los Angeles Times , Our Favorite Cookbooks of Fall 2016. Taste of Persia opens with a map, which illustrates Ms. Duguid’s wise observation that regional cooking doesn’t respect borders. “Naomi Duguid’s cookbooks belong to their own genre—they are unique travel journals studded with history, geography and ethnography, along with fabulous photos of the people she meets and the places she goes. Taste of Persia , Duguid’s latest, is a glorious trip through these five countries that once were part of the Persian empire.” —BookPage , Top Pick in Cookbooks. “A brilliant and beautiful book.” —Montreal Gazette “This book is not singularly about ‘Persian food.’ It is about a culinary region and culture, about transcending borders, about contextualizing a rich, edible heritage. Border is a scintillating, immersive travel narrative that is also a shadow history of the Cold War, a sideways look at the migration crisis troubling Europe, and a deep, witchy descent into interior and exterior geographies. But she also possesses a gift that’s bestowed on only the best of travel writers: an ability to zero in on characters who illuminate the condition of a place in time.” ― The New York Times Book Review. Kassabova’s gifts as a poet shine when she describes the mystical, powerful landscape, the book’s true protagonist.” ― Newsday. “Rich with a profound sense of the region’s political and cultural history, this travelogue moves at an often meandering pace, its narrative broken up by condensed musings on personal conflict, historical ephemera or folklore. Kassabova devotes herself to intimate vignettes that sparkle with the dark charm of fairy tales and mystical fables. Kassabova’s gifts as a poet shine when she describes the mystical, powerful landscape, the book’s true protagonist. “An ethereal siren’s song woven from the myths, legends, and languages that converge in the borderland. The result is a portrait of a place out of time, separate from the countries the speakers inhabit―a distinctive space that the reader can enter too after falling under Kassabova’s spell. Reading Border is a dizzying reminder of the common humanity found on either side of any border.” ― The Christian Century. Kassabova proves to be a penetrating and contemplative guide through rough terrain.” ― Publishers Weekly , starred review. Border offers a dark look at a world of smugglers and spies, where the past maintains its hold even as people struggle to reach a brighter future." “A dreamlike account that subtly draws readers into the author’s ambivalent experience of a homeland that has changed almost beyond recognition.” ― Kirkus Reviews. “This is an exceptional book, a tale of travelling and listening closely, and it brings something altogether new to the mounting literature on the story of modern migration. [At a moment] when asylum-seekers are adrift from one end of the world to the other, Border makes for timely reading.” ― New Statesman (UK) “Riveting, beautifully written. Kassabova, a poet and novelist as well as an essayist, is ideally placed to take us on a journey to a corner of Europe that even today seems exotic and little known. In this region nearly everyone is at only one or two generational removes from exile and displacement, scattered among three alphabets and several nations; and along the way Kassabova meets treasure-hunters, refugees, retired spies, smugglers, hunters, botanists, healers, artists, Gypsies (Roma), forest rangers and -border guards. This is travel writing with lexical precision (“transhumance”, “karst”) and a sense of adventure, but with a distinctively female slant. With the best of travel writers, Kapka Kassabova is an explorer, viewing everything with the eyes of discovery, even as she uncovers strata of history and legend. She makes us long to peer closely at the map, and see these wondrous places for ourselves.” ― The Times Literary Supplement (UK).

"In fact, you will have a great trip that is well-planned, without having to hire your own private tour guide, or waste time with the big tour groups if you have limited time or would like to just go about at your own leisure."
"First, the bad: many of the important maps are on two page spreads, which means they're useless."
"Rick Steven books are always top notch."
"I highly recommend this book if you are planning a vacation to London."
"The warnings about scams and pickpockets might be a bit overdone, but they're the kind of thing you can and should prepare for, so I don't regret listening to Rick's advice."
"I followed his previous guide last year in London... and am going back."
"I usually like Rick Steves books, but I was disappointed in this one."

"It was so nice to just carry a light weight kindle--that I could also use for reading novels on the train or at cafes."
"This is exactly what you'd expect from a Rick Steves' guidebook: same format as all of his Europe destination books, which makes it pretty easy to use."
"Always my go to tour guide when I am traveling abroad, I thoroughly studied and enjoyed this organized planner on a recent trip to the Czech Repulic, Prague, and Karlovy Vary."
"First, it helped me to plan and make an itinerary for our 4 days in Prague. I was so happy that I read about Vysehrad because no one really mentioned it as a tourist stop, but Rick Steve's did and it was a beautiful place to spend the afternoon. This book really makes it so you can go to a place like this on your own without a tour and not feel like you missed out."
"Rick Steve's books are top notch!"
"One note for Rick Stevens/seller: the restaurant "Restaurace u Knihovny" by the Jewish quarter is closed (page 218)."
