"Unfortunately, it was too advanced for me, I was feeling like a bit of a failure, or at least a disappointment, to myself and my teacher already, so I gave it to my teacher. I'm not sure what I would think of it now, but I don't want to ask for it back as my teacher had his bag with music stolen from his car and I don't want to make him feel bad if it is gone."

Taking the Swahili name Mwandishi , the group would go on to play some of the most innovative music of the 1970s, fusing an assortment of musical genres, American and African cultures, and acoustic and electronic sounds into groundbreaking experiments that helped shape the American popular music that followed. At its core, the book is a study about how an artist accumulates a sound and the experiences that shape his musical views…..Perhaps, with this excellent primer, more listeners will start to unearth the joys found in Mwandishi’s three recordings.”. (Jon Ross DownBeat ). “Gluck gives a keen sense of Hancock’s wide-ranging curiosity and eager assimilation of influences, embracing diverse African and Asian musics, the Klangfarbenmelodie of the European avant-garde. (Lou Glandfeld Times Literary Supplement ). “Perhaps the most enigmatic ensemble to emerge from the Davis school was Herbie Hancock’s Mwandishi Band, which today has acquired an almost legendary status. It’s a question that no-one has quite been able to put their finger on until Bob Gluck’s exhaustive study, which offers valuable insight into the life and times of this band, with a wide range of interviews from the musicians themselves and those in the business—record company producers, execs, promoters and the like. In detail and breadth this is an impressive volume and is valuable for the insight it offers into the music making process, the artistic milieu of the period, and aesthetic aspirations behind the project.”. Some of the most compelling sections of You’ll Know When You Get There are those which reveal how the group’s kinetic trajectory as an Afrodelic electroacoustic improvising unit was fully technologised and turbo-boosted in the crucible of the mix. In terms of process, groups such as Can or those led by Miles Davis were monolithic jam bands whose records had to be assembled into alien artefacts in the editing suite. On stage, The [Herbie Hancock] Sextet was already a shapeshifting time machine, moving from zero gravity tonal abstraction to quantum funk via dynamic thematic material and on-the-fly programming and processing, and the records documented electric real-time performances being expanded via the alchemical science of the console room. (Tom Greenland New York City Jazz Record ). “The music, rather than the personalities or life stories of the musicians, is this book’s raison d’etre. Gluck goes to great length to describe the music meaningfully to the broader audience, always striving to encapsulate the special qualities of this body of work. As well-known as Hancock is, this book serves as a valuable resource to understanding his progress, and leaves one hoping for official releases of many of the unissued concert recordings discussed here.”. (Martin Z. Kasdan Jr. Louisville Courier-Journal ). “Gluck’s rich tapestry of musicians’ voices and concise, descriptive analyses allows for a reassessment of a period often over-looked in jazz scholarship.”. A triumph of ‘fusion’ in the most comprehensive sense of the term, Mwandishi merged the acoustic and electric, the exploratory and fundamental, and the musical and social in a manner that has rarely been duplicated.

"Very little has been written about one of the most creative phases of Herbie Hancock's career - the Mwandishi band."
"If you're a fan of the great jazz pianist/composer Herbie Hancock and especially, the fabulous cosmic/jazz group. the Mwandishi Band that he led back in the early 70's, then this marvelous book by jazz historian, pianist, and. music professor Bob Gluck is for you. The Mwandishi band made. three studio albums, "Mwandishi" (1971), "Crossings" (1972), and their final swan song, "Sextant" (1973), all of. them highly electronic, revolutionary, cosmic, improvisational excursions into uncharted territory. Trumpeter Henderson stated, "As far as I'm concerned, it was Herbie's. band, even though we wanted to call it our band." Hancock was also wanting to. take the synthesizer and electronics in a new direction; the mega-selling 1973 album "Head Hunters" was the re-. sult, with Herbie keeping reedman Bennie Maupin from the Mwandishi sextet. There was actually a FOURTH studio. recording released by the Mwandishi band which was a very limited distribution 1973 vinyl album on the UAR label. (7370) scored for the soundtrack to a 1973 black militancy film, "The Spook Who Sat By The Door", based on Sam. Greenlee's 1969 novel, set in Chicago, and directed by Ivan Dixon. It contains thirteen tracks by the band and has a much more funky vibe to it than the other Mwandishi recordings."
"I've been listening to "Crossings" and "Sextant" since they first came out but the book gave me some insights that let me hear them anew, and I'm all the more impressed with waht an achievement this music was. There are a couple of shortcomings in the book: one is that there's a bit too much blow-by-blow description of performances that aren't available to the general public, and it's not particularly interesting to read detailed descriptions of music that you haven't heard or will never hear. The chapter about the critics' reception of the music was a collection of reviews, one after another, which got a bit monotonous; the author's insights into the music are usually more interesting than those of the critics he quotes."

In Italy, castration for singing was understood through the lens of Catholic blood sacrifice as expressed in idioms of offering and renunciation and, paradoxically, in satire, verbal abuse, and even the symbolism of the castrato’s comic cousin Pulcinella. "Working in from the broadest anthropological reflections to the most minute points of physiology and endocrinology—by way of musical and social history, the theory and practice of singing, the insights of three centuries’ worth of philosophers and psychologists, all illustrated with the rarest pictures and recordings— The Castrato is a scholarly and literary feast."

"As I expressed to Dr. Walker in writing, there are those gifted pianists who have the experience and ability to interpret the music of Franz Liszt while Dr. Walker has the equal ability [and credentials therein] to interpret Franz Liszt the man. There are many tomes and recitations, indeed even dedicated websites, about Franz Liszt but Dr. Walker's writings offer an almost You-Are-There quality of his narrative and thus you at least figuratively yet perceptively 'see' and 'hear' Liszt more so than you simply read of the man whether Liszt remarks to one of his students about certain "uninvited guests" [sic -- Liszt's buzz-word for 'wrong notes' or "clinkers"] or Liszt becoming yancy when pressured or indeed even very politely cajoled to play [which happened virtually everywhere he went] versus his own initiative and hence 'desire' to play, as Dr. Walker puts it, "because it is then within his gift to do so.""

"Got my book in couple days time."
"The revision by R. Strauss added a lot of technical in-depth, that today remains current."
"Not realizing how widely the invention would be disseminated, Berlioz devotes less than half a page to the subject. He offers comparable space to a couple of Adolph Sax's other inventions--the saxtrombas and the saxtubas--which most of us have never even heard of. There was also an instrument called the octobass, which was like a contrabass, but with three strings tuned to G, D, and A. Oh well, it's always nice to learn a little music history. If you ever heard the piece, you will surely agree that only a roar results, no matter how accurately the drums are tuned."
"This is perfect for someone who wants to see, know, and understand how the various instruments of an orchestra work: their ranges, characteristics, abilities...it gives many many examples from various compositions from various composers: Wagner, Berlioz, Beethoven, Gluck, Weber, Mozart... Every part of the book except for a couple pages in the beginning talk about the specific instruments...the "meat" of the book IS the book...no "fluff.""
"This is definitely NOT the book with which a contemporary beginner student of orchestration should start."
"Hector Berlioz sets out each section of the orchestra in a logical fashion, reference book style and describes each instrument in a clear, readable and enjoyable manner. This is a first class book on instrumentation/orchestration and would recommend it to composers of all levels of experience."

"If you do not mind having the grey/yellow cover with an image of Norma on it, this score is just fine, and at a great price as well!"
"This score was exactly what I expected and is well printed."
"On page 86, we hear a melody first in isolation, then simultaneously with another melody."
"I ordered the score of Norma here on this page, which says on the front cover that it is the "full score" (see the cover shown above), but instead, I received a piano reduced score of Norma."
"This will do if you are interested in practicing the opera where there is no orchestra present, which I guess will be for most people, the usual situation. The classical purity of the music, the close relation between the text and the music, and the opera's relation to Greek tragedy has already been noted by Wagner."

"For example the fast run towards the last part of Granada (specifically bars/sections 109-116)is impossible to play from this poor positioning."
