"The good thing about TLS is that it convinces you that the best way to achieve fitness and lose fat is to lift heavy weights, high intensity cardio, and diet. I like that the author goes to great lengths to prove that the workout he suggests, the diet, and the supplements are the best proven ways to achieve lean fitness. People just starting to exercise regularly for the first time in their lives might want to adapt some of the exercises, such as less intense cardio to start and lifting in the 8-12 rep range for the first few weeks. I've been working out at home lately and prefer home workouts to going to a gym because of the amount of extra time it takes (driving there, changing, showering afterwards, driving back home). The downside to all this is that most people don't keep up with fitness routines despite their best intentions to lose weight and then they stop using their gym memberships or their home gym. - This workout is best for people who can devote 45-60 minutes 5-6 days a week to working out. That's just elapsed time doing the workouts, not the extra time I mentioned for getting to/from the gym. More specifically, the workout requires lifting heavy weights for 3-5 days a week (the routines take about 45 minutes) and then doing 20-30 minutes of cardio 3-5 days a week. The alternative is to do the cardio workout right after the lifting workout, squeezing it into the 60 or so minutes if you're really disicplined about rest times and very organized with all the equipment you'll need. Or you could do the minimum 3 lifting days a week and separate 3 cardio days per week. The reason this bothers me is that I've found that I can keep to a workout routine best if it's less than 60 minutes per day, which is a bit tight for this program if I lift 5 days/week with cardio right after. The reduced star to my review, despite the fact that I love this book, is due to the downsides to the program listed above as well as the fact that there is no quick reference guide to the major topics (workout, diet, supplements)."

Find Best Price at Amazon"You should definitely look at THINNER, LEANER AND STRONGER before starting this training plan. Its good that she has been going, but at some point you need practical advice and a program like Mike Matthews offers here to really get the most out of your time. More importantly, I was happy to see that she read through THINNER LEANER STRONGER and seems to have picked up a better understanding of both WHAT she is doing and WHY she is doing certain things. Fair warning: I kind of laughed during the first week when she was complaining how tired she was at the end of the day. For about $20, you can get the two THINNER, LEANER books, save yourself hundreds of dollars through the year and get way more out of your time at the gym."
"Maybe I'll be a "before and after" success story on his blog someday...but I've got to get better at the eating part for that to happen ;). I went back and forth about taking off a star because it should be spiral-bound. If I were working out in a gym (I work out in our home gym) it would be a different story because it would make the book less user-friendly for me. I also use their website to watch the videos to make sure my form is correct. I didn't start working on the food part until almost a month ago (read his Thinner, Leaner, Stronger book OR go to his website MuscleForLife.com and look up "meal planning") but it all WORKS."

A public figure since winning his first National Chess Championship at the age of nine, Waitzkin was catapulted into a media whirlwind as a teenager when his father’s book Searching for Bobby Fischer was made into a major motion picture. Rather than focusing on climactic wins, Waitzkin reveals the inner workings of his everyday method, from systematically triggering intuitive breakthroughs, to honing techniques into states of remarkable potency, to mastering the art of performance psychology. In stories ranging from his early years taking on chess hustlers as a seven year old in New York City’s Washington Square Park, to dealing with the pressures of having a film made about his life, to International Chess Championships in India, Hungary, and Brazil, to gripping battles against powerhouse fighters in Taiwan in the Push Hands World Championships, The Art of Learning encapsulates an extraordinary competitor’s life lessons in a page-turning narrative. Now 31, Waitzkin revisits that story from his own perspective and reveals how the fame that followed the movie based on his father's book became one of several obstacles to his further development as a chess master. He turned to tai chi to learn how to relax and feel comfortable in his body, but then his instructor suggested a more competitive form of the discipline called "push hands." In fact, he found a respect for artistry, meditation, and philosophical devotion within both chess and martial arts and realized the possibility for broader application to learning in general.

In Running Rewired , America’s leading endurance sports physical therapist and coach shares a program for runners to become stronger, faster, and more durable. Through his work with athletes at REP Lab and top university sports performance clinics, Dicharry has found that strength training alone is inadequate for runners. “Jay Dicharry integrates the science of how the body moves with his extensive knowledge of runners and their problems to present an in-depth guide to understanding and improving your mechanics, complete with numerous specific and unique exercises which will make you a better runner.” ― Jonathan Beverly, author of Run Strong, Stay Hungry and Your Best Stride. With Jay's detailed guidance, enthusiasm for strength training, and methodical plan I was able to go from unable to run to setting a course marathon PR at the Ironman World Championships in 2013. The things I enjoy most about Jay's strength program are that it is applicable to swim, bike, run, it is easy to follow, it allows for progression as I improve and it's time efficient.” ― Linsey Corbin, professional triathlete and 5-time Ironman Champion. The corrective exercises have become part of my training routine, improved my performance, and reduced my injuries.” ― Alan Webb, American record holder in the mile (3:46.91). I am certain Anatomy for Runners is spot-on, because Jay has helped several of my athletes both remain healthy and get back to championship form.” ― Jason Vigilante, renowned running coach. As Jay discovers in this valuable guide, the reason is an amazingly complex mix of anatomy, strength, forces, vectors, and footwear effects.

Find Best Price at Amazon"I have long suspected that running is also the toughest sport on our body, and the author confirms what I long suspected: “Running creates huge amounts of stress that act on the body from all sides with each and every step.” With every step, “your body must deal with 2.5 to 3 times its body weight with every single stride. “. In RUNNING REWIRED, author Jay Dicharry asks this question: “How can you be sure that your training is setting you up for success?” Here’s the point: There are certain skills that each runner needs to have. I thought the most intriguing section was the chapter about the running stride. So all in all, I found RUNNING REWIRED to be a comprehensive, credible book. I believe the author knows what he is talking about, and I am incorporating his ideas into my own running workouts."
"Jay Dicharry, physical therapist and running coach, wants to rewire your running. Running Rewired: Reinvent Your Run for Stability, Strength, and Speed describes "a system of workouts designed to bring about specific adaptations in your body to impact your run." For runners who want to run longer and stronger, it's worth taking some time to study Dicharry's recommendations and exercises, give them a try for a few weeks, and see how you improve."
"While Anatomy is a longer read and goes a bit deeper into some of the underlying theory of running mechanics and rehab, Running Rewired is more meat and potatoes and will likely serve many runners better. (you don't need to read Anatomy for Runners before getting this book, but if you are really into running mechanics knowledge then you should get both) He explains the underlying mechanics of efficient movement in the great teaching style he is known for, and then also very clearly shows you how to achieve these better mechanics. Or if you are a runner who would like to permanently get off the running injury merry-go-round, or just want to achieve new PRs, the info in this book would be a great place to start!"

In this candid and riveting memoir, for the first time ever, Nike founder and board chairman Phil Knight shares the inside story of the company’s early days as an intrepid start-up and its evolution into one of the world’s most iconic, game-changing, and profitable brands. Above all, he recalls the foundational relationships that formed the heart and soul of Nike, with his former track coach, the irascible and charismatic Bill Bowerman, and with his first employees, a ragtag group of misfits and savants who quickly became a band of swoosh-crazed brothers. “ Shoe Dog is a great American story about luck, grit, know-how, and the magic alchemy of a handful of eccentric characters who came together to build Nike. That it happened at all is a miracle, because as I learned from this book, though we are a nation that extols free enterprise, we also excel at thwarting it. I’ve worn the gear, with pride, but I didn’t realize the remarkable saga of innovation and survival and triumph that stood behind every swoosh. " Shoe Dog is an extraordinary hero's journey, an epic tale of faith, unparalleled determination, excellence, failure, triumph, hard-earned wisdom, and love. Phil Knight takes us back to the Big Bang of the swoosh, recalls how he first begged and borrowed from reluctant banks, how he assembled a crew of eccentric but brilliant misfits, how they all worked together to build something unique and paradigm-changing. "A fresh historical prospective on one of the most profiled companies in the world...[ Shoe Dog ] builds characters of the people behind the brand, many of whom we've never heard of." As Knight collects the misfits and oddballs who become the core of his growing company, Shoe Dog is more like The Lord of the Rings than a typical mogul memoir."

This will be a great read for anybody, but if you’re thinking about starting a business, especially a business that you expect to grow, this book belongs on your must-read list. "The author also demonstrates the importance of creative individuals to a organization, perseverance of management, and the importance of having a passionate knowledge of the product as well as market contacts with which to ensure growth."
"The last chapter sums everything together and is beautifully descriptive as it bridges and incorporates the old and new, the people who made the biggest impact to NIKE and what they are doing now.."
"Phil Knight tells his story and the story of Nike’s rise – from his earliest travels to Japan, to the company’s first stirrings in 1972 to its IPO in 1980."

Sadhguru writes, "...whatever the events and situations around you, you don't get crushed by them; you ride them." Most people go through life letting external events dictate who they are and how they should feel. They spend most of their time in memories of the past or in imaginal futures, usually of a bad kind. The data may be gathered consciously or unconsciously...your intellect is perpetually immersed in the past. We transform the physical body from a series of compulsions of flesh, blood, and hormones into a conscious process, a powerful instrument of perception and knowing." "The entire yogic process is aimed at aligning oneself with the natural longing of life to expand in an unlimited way... Yoga means to experience the mental and physical process distinctly, not as the basis of yourself, but as that which is caused by you." "The yogic practices, which involve postures, breath, attitudes of mind, and energy activation, are all essentially oriented toward aligning the first three layers of the body: the physical, the mental, and the energetic body. It is only in aligning them that you find access to dimensions beyond the physical--to the fundamental life energy itself." So I began studying New Thought writings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. I spent hours every day studying, meditating, thinking, disciplining my mind. Now I look back and think of all the challenges I have overcome and the many lessons I've learned through this difficult life. As Neville Goddard said, "The true test of religion is in its use, but men have made it a thing to defend." Then again, and this time I paid attention to the chapter titles to orient myself, and it took better form in my mind. The keys to the kingdom are in here, but you have to recognize and wade through your own preconceptions, judgments, beliefs, and preferences. And I finally understand the physical practice of yoga and how it can be used to evolve. I will leave you with one more gem that spoke to me: "Unfortunately, most human beings are doing much the same thing: they are labeling their compulsions, their limitations, as their choices."
"[...]. Sadhguru wants to be a “dispeller of darkness.” He believes that living joyfully is not “magical” but can be done systematically, like an engineering problem. He gained many lifetimes of memory and became aware of a “million things.” He decided to go beyond the rational and logical and embrace the “intelligence of life itself.”. He realized that goal of all human endeavor is to liberate itself of boundaries. Align your physical body, your mind and your energies totally to existence and that will lead to liberation and pure joy. In the second part of the book, Sadhguru lays out a path to improve the body, mind and our energies. Body is improved by doing the physical asanas, keeping our spine erect, and slowing down our breath. Body is nourished by food, which he recommends should be vegetarian or at most fish, no higher animals. It creates problems when you deny or moralize basic human drives. Sadhguru recommends to learn to keep your intellect in awareness, not in memory. While the thoughts and discussion he presents are mostly in line with “Analytical Faith”, there are a few areas where he strains belief."

Find Best Price at Amazon"It took me about 1 1/2 months to work through the book and I rate it as excellent instruction for anyone wanting to learn or re-learn the piano."
"A little background before I get into the real review: My 14 y/o trumpet player daughter has been wanting to learn the piano for years. Her trumpet teacher disagreed and recommended she start with the Suzuki method as she has and incredibly good ear and quite a bit of natural musical talent. I bought this book to help rectify that, knowing that I'll be sitting in on her weekly lessons and absorbing a lot of information there. It's pretty exciting to go from not knowing where middle C is located to playing Jingle Bells with a bit of harmony in 2 days! I do plan on adding scales and such to my practice sessions, as these are truly the things that will help you progress and give you a more fundamental understanding of how music is put together. I feel like I'm able to grasp the concepts that are introduced and will be able to help my daughter along once her lessons start in a couple of weeks."
"No CD, but Youtube is better than the CD anyway."
"so I knew how to read music but never a keyboard based instrument that required two sets of staffs (melody and chord) to be read simultaneously (sometimes the left and the right hands go in opposite directions and mostly at different beats!). Once I learned the basics though, I figured that "Life's too short" and that Alfred's taught me enough fundamentals that I should just start playing music I enjoy for self entertainment."
"I am thoroughly enjoying the piano with this primer."

Find Best Price at Amazon"I've got the other books he wrote, they are very helpful and the amount of pain removed from my body makes it worth far more than I paid. About the only improvement I could suggest is more sketch overlays that indicate the area of focus, direction of motion, things like that. Sketch lines down the spine and arm or leg, little angle symbol or curved arrows help me to understand very well. Seriously, anybody that thinks light thin text on shiny paper is a good idea should not be publishing books. If the ink were a full black, the font a little thicker, or maybe just printed on regular paper it wouldn't be such a struggle. (And maybe it is a full black, but the shiny paper effect makes it look like a dim gray at best to me.). The contrast is simply poor and I can't stand reading this book more than a few minutes at a time, which is really frustrating because the information is so valuable that I am compelled to suffer through it. EDIT: I'm going to try and upload a picture showing what I'm talking about, and I apologize if my camera isn't the greatest."
"I did get a standing desk (before reading this book) but then my lower back started to hurt."
"Gorgeous photographs and drawings illustrate proper spinal mechanics and movements, and the book ends with strategies and techniques for dealing with the mischief and mayhem we cause for ourselves by sitting too long and too often in a position that nature never intended."
