Selected from an archive of over 10,000 images amassed by Ernest Hallen (Official Photographer of the Isthmian Canal Commission), these historic prints document the Canal's construction and its way of life: 450 miles of railroad; housing for 60,000 based on a caste system; the exotic settings; tremendous hardships and health risks; leisure activities; the Canal Zone's internal government, administration and policing; dredging operations, including spectacular movements of earth and water; unheard-of engineering feats and disastrous failures; and finally, victory! Photography enthusiasts and lovers of true adventure will delight in the vibrant, you-are-there sensation imparted by the photos and Ulrich Keller's exceptionally informed text and meticulous captions. The Building of the Panama Canal in Historic Photographs takes the reader back to a different era, and one of the proudest episodes in what the author calls "the 'heroic' age of industry."

Machu Picchu: A Civil Engineering Marvel takes readers inside the Lost City of the Incas for a groundbreaking perspective never before seen by tourists or archeologists. Machu Picchu, the famous "Lost City of the Inca," has fascinated and captivated archaeologists for five centuries. The book tells us as much about the practical challenges of building a city as it does about the mysterious Inca, and it should be an immediate hit with armchair archaeologists and fans of the kind of ancient civilization documentaries that are a staple on PBS's Nova .

Find Best Price at Amazon"I've spent quite a bit of time today looking at various pages, and while distracting, the text from following pages doesn't completely overwhelm what you are trying to read. I had read that the pages were thinner in the last few editions making it more difficult to read, but I decided to buy it anyway. You can see the back of the page clearly, the front and back of the next page, and sometimes even the next page! This book is vastly more difficult to read than the 24th edition I have, and despite having some additional information I would like to have at my fingertips and the larger type, I just can't keep this book. What good is having super thin and super delicate pages on a book that you will use the most?"
"I am older and now wear trifocals so this big print edition was real find."
"I'm young and good eyesight so I can read it fairly easy but I still find it annoying."
"The increased cost is worth it."
"I really like the larger format of the book."
"received and it is just as expected."
"One would think after the fiasco with thin pages in the previous version, Industrial Prints would have figured not to use the same thin paper in their latest 30th edition of the book..."
"If you are a machinist or hobby machinist this book contains a lot of material you will never use."
