Gregory Heisler: 50 Portraits: Stories and Techniques from a Photographer's Photographer
For Heisler’s fans and all lovers of photography, Gregory Heisler: 50 Portraits offers not only a gorgeous collection of both black-and-white and color portraits, but an engrossing look at the rarely seen art of a master photographer at work. Gregory Heisler has been described as having “the eye of an artist, the mind of a scientist, and the heart of a journalist.” Renowned for his technical mastery and thoughtful responsiveness, he has photographed more than seventy cover portraits for Time magazine, which reside in the permanent collection of The National Portrait Gallery.
Reviews
"And as beautiful as the photography is, you will not find the pictures the main takeaway from the book. That last sentence feels strange and somehow sacrilegious to write, but it is absolutely true. The pleasant surprise is that he is actually a very good writer, and you can hear him sitting and talking with you as you read it. The accompanying copy begins with the thought process leading up to the photo -- all of the thousand little things that happen before you press the shutter. And in so many of the portraits, I could see the multiple instances in which I would have failed to come up with the solutions to make great pictures. The second written portion in each segment is "Thoughts on Technique," to which many here will be tempted to skip ahead. Finally, Heisler includes what he unofficially calls the "Moron Section" in the back of the book. (As in, "For more on this photo...") There you'll find camera types, lenses, film, exposure, lighting gear specifics, etc. 50 Portraits is the opportunity to rent the brain of perhaps the best living portraitist today -- and to do so to a remarkable extent."
"The tones are intentionally placed, the poses are innovative, the compositions feel good, and sharpness (where appropriate) makes the images life-like. The writing is concise and easy to read, with a good balance between descriptions of the sessions and how the main challenges were handled. I intend to make my students buy this volume as the textbook for the intermediate portrait workshops because it's chock full of great examples."
"In "50 Portraits", Heisler breaks the mold and shares some truly remarkable images from his work, while accompanying each photo with fascinating details about the thinking and technique behind the shoot. Whether he's sharing ideas about working with people, giving advice on technique, or describing his thought process behind an image, each segment that accompanies the photograph is both fascinating and thought-provoking. While this is available on Kindle, I can't imagine why anyone would opt to get a digital edition of this book, when it's the prints that make each photo truly come alive."

"The book is a bit technical and I will need to read it again... slowly... so that I can digest everything. But the level of detail is a good thing and totally worth the effort if you truly want to understand lighting for photography. It covers photographing different types of subjects... reflective, clear, black, white, etc. In addition to explaining the science of why you need to light a certain type of subject a certain way to produce a certain result, it includes photos to illustrate these points. PROS: - Detailed explanations that help you understand the science of lighting."
"I am a self-taught photographer wanting to learn more about how to craft studio light."
"There are a few minor errors when the authors push their understanding of physics a bit too far, but those do not detract significantly from the overall excellence of the book."
"This book is fabulous!!"

"If you have to read just one book about lighting in your life, this is it - it's all you're ever going to need, seriously."

The Lost Boys of Sudan: An American Story of the Refugee Experience
We relive their early excitement and disorientation, their growing despondency over fruitless job searches, adjustments they faced upon finally entering the workforce, their experiences of post-9/11 xenophobia, and their undying dreams of acquiring an education. Along the way author Mark Bixler looks closely at the ins and outs of U.S. refugee policy, the politics of international aid, the history of Sudan, and the radical Islamist underpinnings of its government. In 2000, in a historically unprecedented gesture, the federal government resettled 3,800 young men unaccompanied by parents and with no family in the U.S. when it opened its doors to those who were called the Lost Boys of Sudan.
Reviews
"A beautiful story of these men of Sudan."
"Bixler gets things right in "The Lost Boys of Sudan." Additionally, he does a nice job of weaving historical context into the story he tells of the young men from Sudan."
"bixler has written a great, informative book; while i was aware of all the terrible things that were going on in sudan & the horn of africa in general, i was unaware of the efforts made in the US to relocate many of these refugees; it is an incredible story, not only of the horrors they went through, that is better know atleast to me, but the efforts to relocate & all that entailed not only for the refugees but the many volunteers in the US who worked so hard to help them; obviously some of the refugees worked out better than others but a great story none the less."
"This more up to date accounting of their time here in the United States is definitely eye opening."
"Having a friend among the Lost Boys of Sudan clearly helps to understand the journey these young men have made."
"These men wen through unimaginable trials to be upheavaled into a life and a world so strange and foreign to them its mind blowing."
"I was really surprised that the book is very interesting and hard to put down."
"Good book to gain an understanding of the problems faced by refugees and assimilation into American society."

Obama: An Intimate Portrait
Relive the extraordinary Presidency of Barack Obama through White House photographer Pete Souza's behind-the-scenes images and stories in this #1 New York Times bestseller--with a foreword from the President himself. During Barack Obama's two terms, Pete Souza was with the President during more crucial moments than anyone else--and he photographed them all. "The book, which distills the 1.9 million photographs that Souza took of Obama's eight years in the White House down to about 300 images, it as once warm and nostalgic, worshipful and respectful, sad and wistful-in a sense, not so different from the framed JFK portraits that everyday Americans hung in living rooms, right through the Nixon administration. In conveying both the weight of the office and President Obama's full engagement with its demands, Souza fuels our admiration--and stokes our regret.
Reviews
"I'd like to say up front here that this is one of those reviews where I am struggling so hard to put thoughts into words, because of how many thoughts I have, and how difficult it is for me to express them. He was funny and personable, and every time I heard him speak I felt suddenly prouder and more patriotic. Because all the rest of that time I wasted being blind and hateful. I'm not really the kind that normally runs off to scrounge around for books they can't afford, but this is the second photography book of the Obamas I've done so for, and it captured my heart as much the second time, as it did the first. UPDATE: Thanks to so many of the kind, heartwarming offers, I have received a copy of this book."
"Well, I guess it is the idea of the unconditional love that I have personally felt by dogs.....and the fact that it least in my mind that is what our former President and First Lady gave us for 8 years. I pray that someday Obama haters or hopefully their children will view the pictures in this “must have” Obama memorabilia and appreciate not only the historical significance of this man to US and world history but also feel his unconditional love of America ; its history, culture and people in every page."
"Obama wasn't perfect, but seeing his two-term administration, not riddled by scandal or buffoonery, captured in this historic volume brought tears to my eyes."
"As I thumb through the pages, I realize how much of my vision of President Obama was formed by the photographs of special moments captured by Souza."
"In capturing the defining moments of the Obama presidency, Mr. Souza has given the common citizen a personal, vulnerable look into the remarkable 8-year tenure of the 44th president."
