Hooked: How to Build Habit-Forming Products
Nir Eyal answers these questions (and many more) by explaining the Hook Model—a four-step process embedded into the products of many successful companies to subtly encourage customer behavior. Hooked is written for product managers, designers, marketers, start-up founders, and anyone who seeks to understand how products influence our behavior. "With concrete advice and tales from the product-development trenches, this is a thoughtful discussion of how to create something that users never knew they couldn’t live without." “The most high bandwidth, high octane, and valuable presentation I have ever seen on this subject.”. —Rory Sutherland, Vice-Chairman, Ogilvy & Mather. "Nir's work is an essential crib sheet for any startup looking to understand user psychology.”. —Dave McClure, Founder 500 Startups.
Reviews
"This book lays down a model building engagement by having users constantly return to your app. The "variable" part is important - rewards should not always be predictable, encouraging users to repeat the cycle. This could be content (e.g. a book in your Kindle), user entered data (e.g. profile information or linked accounts), reputation (e.g. something to gain a 5 star seller review), or a learned skill (e.g. I wanted something that would get to the crux of the problem and set out a practical framework of how to apply it with examples, without being overly verbose on history and research."
"I don't currently do any product design but the concepts apply at some level to any kind of marketing and could be used (at least in part) for promoting a service business, a tangible product or even just ideas."
"While I enjoyed the book, I would also add that business owners and product managers (could be many other stakeholders) should also spend significant time focusing on their business model and determining who the paying customers are! A focus on a business model does not mean that you need paying customers on day one (the timing will depend on your business model), but you need to have a model that determines your revenue streams and how they will be achieved."
"I'm a product manager at a large tech company and this book breaks down the habit forming process in an excellent and easy to digest manner."
"Good book using real life examples and case studies to back up the lessons learned."

The Box: How the Shipping Container Made the World Smaller and the World Economy Bigger, Second Edition with a new chapter by the author
By making shipping so cheap that industry could locate factories far from its customers, the container paved the way for Asia to become the world's workshop and brought consumers a previously unimaginable variety of low-cost products from around the globe. Now with a new chapter, The Box tells the dramatic story of how the drive and imagination of an iconoclastic entrepreneur turned containerization from an impractical idea into a phenomenon that transformed economic geography, slashed transportation costs, and made the boom in global trade possible. Winner of the 2007 Bronze Medal in Finance/Investment/Economics, Independent Publisher Book Awards. Shortlisted for the 2006 Financial Times /Goldman Sachs Business Book of the Year. Honorable Mention for the 2006 John Lyman Book Award, Science and Technology category, North American Society for Ocean History. One of Financial Times (FT.com) Best Business Books of 2013 (chosen by guest critic Bill Gates, Chairman of Microsoft). "One of the most significant, yet least noticed, economic developments of the last few decades [was] the transformation of international shipping. The idea of containerization was simple: to move trailer-size loads of goods seamlessly among trucks, trains and ships, without breaking bulk. Along the way, even the most foresighted people made mistakes and lost millions. --Virginia Postrel, The New York Times [See full review http://bit.do/Box-NYT-Postrel]. "Like much of today's international cargo, Marc Levinson's The Box arrives 'just in time.'. It is a tribute to the box itself that far-off places matter so much to us now: It has eased trade, sped up delivery, lowered prices and widened the offering of goods everywhere. "By artfully weaving together the nuts and bolts of what happened at which port with the grand sweep of economic history, Levinson has produced a marvelous read for anyone who cares about how the interconnected world economy came to be." [I]t shows vividly how resistance to technological change caused shipping movements to migrate away from the Hudson river to other East Coast ports." illustrates clearly how great risks are taken by entrepreneurs when entrenched interests and government regulators conspire against them. Even after these opponents are dispatched, technological and economic uncertainty plague the entrepreneur just as much as the vaunted 'first-mover advantage' blesses him, perhaps more. owes its exponential growth to something utterly ordinary and overlooked, says author Marc Levinson: the metal shipping container.... spins yarns of the men who fought to retain the old On the Waterfront ways and of those who made the box ubiquitous."
Reviews
"If you are the least bit interested in the evolution of the global economy and the factors involving container shipping that influenced it, look no further than The Box."
"That day one of the coolies unloading a ship in the Calcutta docks slipped from the gangplank and fell into the water between the ship and cement pier. Usually a gentle current make the ship swing to and fro gently hitting the pier and with perfect timing as the coolie fell into the sea the ship crushed him to death against the cement pier."
"I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical non-fiction, 20th century history, or is interested in maritime technology / shipping and freight technology."
"Besides the obvious topic of shipping containers, The Box provides insights into labor relations, regulation, good and bad business management, and globalization. Among the most surprising points to me were the speed at which changes in shipping occurred and the lack of data to drive decision making."
"Before I started reading, I was skeptical of how interesting a book on "Shipping Container" could be."
"This is an engaging read and a thoroughly researched history of the container, shipping, its impact upon unions, railroads and trucking."
"I would give five stars for the effort and the research but I feel that the author emphasized primarily the situation in the US, and doesn't really examine how container shipping grew in the rest of the world."

The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America's Shining Women
The Curies' newly discovered element of radium makes gleaming headlines across the nation as the fresh face of beauty, and wonder drug of the medical community. Written with a sparkling voice and breakneck pace, The Radium Girls fully illuminates the inspiring young women exposed to the "wonder" substance of radium, and their awe-inspiring strength in the face of almost impossible circumstances. " Radium Girls spares us nothing of their suffering; though at times the foreshadowing reads more like a true-crime story, Moore is intent on making the reader viscerally understand the pain in which these young women were living, and through which they had to fight in order to get their problems recognized...The story of real women at the mercy of businesses who see them only as a potential risk to the bottom line is haunting precisely because of how little has changed; the glowing ghosts of the radium girls haunt us still." "This timely book celebrates the strength of a group of women, whose determination to fight improved both labor laws and scientific knowledge of radium poisoning. Written in a highly readable, narrative style, Moore's chronicle of these inspirational women's lives is sure to provoke discussion-and outrage-in book groups." "Moore's well-researched narrative is written with clarity and a sympathetic voice that brings these figures and their struggles to life...a must-read for anyone interested in American and women's history, as well as topics of law, health, and industrial safety." "Like Da a Sobel's The Glass Universe and Margot Lee Shetterly's Hidden Figures, Kate Moore's The Radium Girls tells the story of a cohort of women who made history by entering the workforce at the dawn of a new scientific era. Moore sheds new light on a dark chapter in American labor history; the " Radium Girls ," martyrs to an unholy alliance of commerce and science, live again in her telling" - Megan Marshall, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Margaret Fuller: A New American Life and Elizabeth Bishop: A Miracle for Breakfast.
Reviews
"In The Radium Girls Kate Moore tells the story of these young women, seemingly so fortunate, who were poisoned by the jobs they felt so lucky to have. After some of the women died and more became ill the companies making large profits on radium rushed to dismiss any hint that the work was unsafe. Eventually publicity stemming from lawsuits filed by some of the victims (using their own scanty resources) focused enough attention on the problem that governments felt compelled to set safety standards and regulations. The safety regulations and restrictions which were finally put into place hardly seem adequate, and the Epilogue and Postscript giving details of the women's later lives, as well as an account of another industry that made careless use of radium as late as the 1970s, are especially harrowing."
"This is one these books that will stay with you long after you finished reading it."
"One of the best books I have read in a long time!"
"The job paid above average wages to women, and even when it was realized that coworkers were developing horrible health problems, some women continued to work because their families needed money the job provided."
"I just got through reading Radium Girls based the the true story of the girls and women employed to paint watch dials in the early twentieth century with an exciting and new product, radium. Every girl wanted in on the work as it was good pay and radium was said to be good for your health."
"The effect of radiation is horrific, the agonies they and their families suffered horrific, the determination to obtain compensation and acknowledgement and the battles they fought for their loved ones, peers, and for justice makes this book one of the most moving and tremendous books I have ever read."

"If you have time yo study both Rita's book and Head First I HIGHLY recommend studying both! 2) Buy Rita's book and read as much as you can. 3) Get McGraw-Hill's PMP Certification Mathematics with CD-ROM to help with the math section (take the practice test on the CD-ROM) 1-2 days before the test. Take the first test to see where you are, study study study the knowledge areas where you are weak take exam 2 if you get less than 80 go back to Rita's book! 5) I LOVED Head First PMP but if you don't have time to study everything I would say to buy this book as a companion to Rita's book. This book is a fun read and makes the concepts easier to understand. 6) Make sure your referencing the PMBOK 5 (Most Important). During the exam (make sure your doing good on time before you follow these directions). 1) If you believe in prayer (PRAY) - ummmm you also do not need to tell anyone your taking the test, just in case........ 2) Breathe and relax. 3) Do the first 50 - 75 questions (Take a break, go to the bathroom, get some water, sit in the waiting room, just get away from the test). 4) Go back in do the next 25 - 50 questions (take another break). 5) Keep doing this until you finish. 6) Before you review your questions, take your final break come back review your questions, (I took another break!!!!!"
"Personally, I would recommend attending a class aswell as the test is hard and somewhat pedantic in its questions and answers."
"Very good method for getting information into your head, and sticking."
"I would recommend this book as a supplement to the PMBOK guide when studying for the PMP exam."
"The content is fine but definitely needs some editing."
"Passed my PMP exam on the first try using this as one of my 2 main study guides."
"The information is getting dated but still relevant for the current exam."
"This really does a great job of explaining how to take the PMP exam. My only complaint is that the sample exam questions are numeric; 1,2,3,4."
