"Pretty much all the bass-related topics mentioned in this book are covered in the Groove Workshop DVD (Victor Wooten: Groove Workshop). (which by the way includes exercises and teaches those insights in a straight forward way, not as story and without. the New Age spin). I highly recommend his Groove Workshop DVD no matter what you bass skill level may be. It worked out in the end since I put the MP3 files on my COWON J3 32 GB Portable Media Player (Black) (which I would also. recommend) and listened to it from there."

With the same trademark compassion and erudition he brought to The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat , Oliver Sacks explores the place music occupies in the brain and how it affects the human condition.
Reviews
Find Best Price at Amazon"Sacks divides these topics into four main parts: First, the often haunting onset of the heightened sensitivity to music, followed by the relation of music to all senses of the body, then the strange presence of music in the lives of patients with mentally crippling disorders, and finally, the incredible impact (or lack thereof) of music in the lives of all people, even those without any kind of condition. In Musicophilia, Sacks first recounts his experiences with patients who had, at some point in their lives, suddenly felt the onset of a heightened sensitivity to music. Faced with the rare condition of Musicogenic Epilepsy, many of these patients would live in fear of hearing that one familiar tune that set off the attacks, and so Sacks illustrates the need for research in curing that aurally crippling ailment. Sacks also discusses the mechanisms and regions of the brain responsible for musical imagination and continuous playback, as in the case of a catchy tune, until finally, he delves into the rare condition known as Musical Hallucination. Part II of Musicophilia concerns the vast range of musicality that individuals possess, and Sacks covers topics in Amusia, Absolute Pitch, Dysharmonia, Savant Syndrome, and even Synesthesia. Sacks demonstrates just how fascinating some of these conditions may be in his stories, and in one case of absolute pitch he tells of a former professor of music at Oxford who could even tell what pitch came from the wind blowing or his father blowing his nose. It is truly amazing to read of the ways music has helped these patients, and even in closing, Sacks shares a truly heartwarming story of how music therapy even brought back certain memories to a person who struggled with dementia. Oliver Sacks' Musicophilia demonstrates the countless ways music has helped others in their lives, including adverse conditions such as Savant Syndrome, Amnesia, even Dementia - and for this reason I rate Musicophilia a five out of five stars. It is truly inspiring to hear how many of these patients whom Sacks has interacted with have relied on music in their lives, and uplifting to hear how music has brought back good memories or normal functions in them."
"I have learned so many things about how music can affect and improve mental illness and it is easily applicable to those around me."
"Unfortunately, he died just recently, and one hopes that the others who follow through with studies of the brain and neurology will have such keen insights."
"As always, Oliver Sacks both informs and elevates He teaches not by "dumbing-down," but by requiring the reader to become an active participant, engaged in the material which is also engaging."
"great book like all other books he wrote, informative and entertaining."
"Love this author, gave this to my sister in law who is an accomplished musician and music teacher."
"I learned so many astonishing things from this book about brain function and dysfunction and superfunction in reference to music."
"Be advised this is not a book about how the brain processes music, nor what the affects are of music on the brain."
Best Physics of Acoustics & Sound
• How composers produce some of the most pleasurable effects of listening to music by exploiting the way our brains make sense of the world. • Why we are so emotionally attached to the music we listened to as teenagers, whether it was Fleetwood Mac, U2, or Dr. Dre. • That practice, rather than talent, is the driving force behind musical expertise. • How those insidious little jingles (called earworms) get stuck in our head. Now imagine sitting down with someone who was there when the song was recorded and can tell you how that series of sounds was committed to tape, and who can also explain why that particular combination of rhythms, timbres and pitches has lodged in your memory, making your pulse race and your heart swell every time you hear it. Remarkably, Levitin does all this and more, interrogating the basic nature of hearing and of music making (this is likely the only book whose jacket sports blurbs from both Oliver Sacks and Stevie Wonder), without losing an affectionate appreciation for the songs he's reducing to neural impulses.

Best Music History & Criticism
Ten years ago, Motley Crue's bestselling The Dirt —penned with rock chronicler extraordinaire Neil Strauss—set a new bar for rock 'n' roll memoirs. Crue members Tommy Lee, Mick Mars, Vince Neil and Nikki Sixx also team up with New York Times music writer Neil Strauss to tell the story of their band's rise to phenomenal success: their tours, friendships, alcohol and drug problems, music, influence and, above all, girls. Their hobbies have included collecting automatic weapons, cultivating long arrest records, pushing the envelope of conceivable drug abuse, and dreaming up backstage antics that would make Ozzy Osbourne blanch with modesty.

"A little background before I get into the real review: My 14 y/o trumpet player daughter has been wanting to learn the piano for years. Her trumpet teacher disagreed and recommended she start with the Suzuki method as she has and incredibly good ear and quite a bit of natural musical talent. I bought this book to help rectify that, knowing that I'll be sitting in on her weekly lessons and absorbing a lot of information there. It's pretty exciting to go from not knowing where middle C is located to playing Jingle Bells with a bit of harmony in 2 days! I do plan on adding scales and such to my practice sessions, as these are truly the things that will help you progress and give you a more fundamental understanding of how music is put together. I feel like I'm able to grasp the concepts that are introduced and will be able to help my daughter along once her lessons start in a couple of weeks."

Best Lyrics in Music
These are some of the best-loved songs in the modern American songbook. A gorgeous keepsake edition of the Dead’s official annotated lyrics, The Complete Annotated Grateful Dead Lyrics is an absolute must-have for the fiftieth anniversary—you won’t think of this cultural icon the same way again. Why are the obscure tales of their characters' (Jack Straw, Black Peter, August West, et al) trials and tribulations on the psychedelic Americana landscape so intriguing? What is the deal with the reoccurring imagery that popped in and out of their songs for decades (the crows, light and darkness, rolling rivers, gambling, playing cards, space, and, of course, roses)? It is clear the Grateful Dead's lyricists Robert Hunter and John Barlow tapped into the well of the collective subconscious for material, but rarely were any explanations provided. The Complete Annotated Grateful Dead Lyrics began as a research project for David Dodd while he was working at the University of Colorado.
