Grain Brain: The Surprising Truth about Wheat, Carbs, and Sugar--Your Brain's Silent Killers
Groundbreaking and timely, Grain Brain shows that the fate of your brain is not in your genes, it's in the food you eat. Modern wheat, in particular, is responsible for destroying more brains in this country than all the strokes, car accidents, and head trauma combined. Dr. Perlmutter makes a persuasive case for this wheat-free approach to preserve brain health and functioning, or to begin the process of reversal." "If you want to boost your brain power, keep your memory, and lift your mood and energy, as well as heal from a host of other common complaints, Dr. Perlmutter is your guide. "A provocative, eye-opening scientific account of how diet profoundly influences nerve health and brain function. Grain Brain explains how the American diet rich in gluten and inflammatory foods is linked to neurological conditions. "A galvanizing call to arms against a gluten-heavy diet....Perlmutter's credentials as a board-certified neurologist and American College of Nutrition Fellow make him a uniquely qualified voice in the debate about which foods are best for the brain and body." "Mind-blowing and disruptive to some long-standing beliefs about what our bodies require for optimal health...GRAIN BRAIN lays out an easy-to-understand roadmap packed with the latest science."

"I'm never hungry, I get to eat all kinds of meats and cheeses and veggies, and I don't even bother counting calories. The supplements he recommends have made an almost instant difference - my nails are stronger and growing long, my skin is better, and my overall mood is vastly improved."
"It changed everything I thought I knew about food and its relationship to health. You just eat what’s good for you: Fat - lots of it, meats, vegetables, eggs, cheese, salads, nuts, seeds (my new favorite snack is Pepitas, which they have at Publix). I eat a lot less than I used to because I’m getting enough fat in my diet, and not stuffing myself with useless breads, crackers, chips, and pasta – which just make me hungrier and hungrier. What I’ve gained are increased energy, lots less brain fog, joints moving better (do not hurt all the time), less headaches – a LOT less, tummy troubles are now non-existent, and before, I was always gaseous or had diarrhea, or just was hurting in general. My labs were checked in February, after just two months, and my doc was blown away. I was no longer in the diabetic range and my liver functions had normalized. He also has a good website with a lot of articles to read: [...] If you want your health back, it’s time to read, Grain Brain!"
"An additional note -- anyone who already eats fairly consciously and still needs to lose pounds will still have to practice moderation, e.g., the license and reasons to consume "good" fats, for instance, are neurologically important, but the calories add up quickly if you don't track how much you eat vs. how active you are."
"It is a sobering read, but is a must read if you are interested in maintaining good brain health and avoiding diseases such as Type II Diabetes, as well as potentially significantly reducing the risk of developing dementia and other brain disease."
"I overheard a couple of fellow Bikram yoginis discussing Dr. Perlmutter's current book "Brain Maker," and I decided to order both books."

The Wahls Protocol: A Radical New Way to Treat All Chronic Autoimmune Conditions Using Paleo Principles
Now, in The Wahls Protocol, she shares the details of the protocol that allowed her to reverse many of her symptoms, get back to her life, and embark on a new mission: to share the Wahls Protocol with others suffering from the ravages of multiple sclerosis and other autoimmune conditions. Terry L. Wahls, M.D., is a clinical professor of medicine at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine in Iowa City and the director of the Therapeutic Lifestyle Clinic at the Iowa City Veterans Affairs Health Care System, where she treats veterans with autoimmune, neurological, and medical problems using diet and lifestyle interventions.

"Even though I'm definitely NOT grateful for having this disease, I truly believe my loved ones, future children and I obtained the most valuable information we have come across as a consequence of my MS. In this book, Dr Wahls goes into detail about every aspect of the dietary and lifestyle changes she recommends, which includes supplements, exercise, electrical stimulation, meditation, etc., and she details three different versions of the Wahls diet so anyone can find a level they can learn to live with. I actually convinced my wife and my mother to read the book and follow different levels of the protocol with me for one month. It has been three weeks today, and the results have been noticeable: - I have RRMS, and am still in early stages of the disease so when I'm in remission, which is 90% of the time, I have no symptoms. She feels a lot more rested and the Polar Loop is actually measuring and showing these results as concrete data. Additionally, she used to get headaches at work about once a week, and hasn't had a single one since following the Wahls Paleo. I have now read many other books by Sarah Ballantyne, Dr. Perlmutter, Amy Myers, Jimmy Moore, etc., I have found countless Blogs and Cookbooks, and I even have iOS Apps that make my life way easier (MyPaleoPal is excellent for tracking and ideas, for example). I now enjoy eating and even cooking more than I ever had before, and my entire family is still reaping the benefits from all this knowledge. Just to detail a bit more: I follow the Wahls Paleo Plus diet, mixed together with the AIP just to make it a little more challenging. This means no nuts, seeds, nightshades, or coffee, on top of Dr Wahls' strictest protocol. I also swim every other day, meditate and work my core muscles daily, and sleep 7.5-8.5 hours every night. You be the judge: my last relapse was over a year ago, I can now bike for 45minutes and totally withstand heat sensitivity, I can swim for as long as I want to, I walked over 120,000 steps in a week last december during Christmas break (used a pedometer to keep track), I'm sleeping like a baby, and, MOST IMPORTANT: I stopped my MS medication two weeks ago (under my neurologist's supervision of course, and having sworn to go back on it if my status changes negatively)."
"The book is so easy to read, and it is set up pretty much the way I spent my first year changing my diet. I loved reading Chapter 7 - Wahls Paleo Plus, because that is the way I basically eat now, strictly and consistently. This new book is an easier read, but still full of Dr. Wahls passion for sharing this vital information, and getting it right. Her life is at stake, and she wants to help as many people as she can - in my opinion, it is obvious that this book is a true labor of love for her. I rarely left the house, except for appointments that I couldn't put off any longer, or family celebrations with the our grown kids. My husband, whose busy career took much of his time, did the best he could, which meant my diet was mostly easy processed food or take-out. A few weeks after I sold/gave my beloved Prius to my son, my daughter urged me to look into some doctor that had MS and wrote a book about how she healed herself with diet. I had a slight increase in energy, and cleaned a tiny spot of kitchen counter between the sink and the coffee maker. I had stopped eating white potatoes, and soon started avoiding soy, legumes all processed and packaged foods. After a year, a friend offered to drive me to the gym again, so I started working out a bit, and she helped me move between machines. Finally I started taking my walker, and then made my husband buy a car so I could have his Prius - I needed my independence back, and I was ready. My gym workouts were good for a while but I began to hurt myself; I could barely remember how to walk, because my body was so messed up. I started working with a personal trainer at the gym, after he actually convinced me that he could wake up my severely weakened muscles, when giving me a free hour-long evaluation where I could not even do a squat, or get up from the floor. I can now do a deadlift with 115 pound weight, I can squat, carry bags of groceries upstairs, and take many different classes at the gym, with modifications, such as Zumba, spinning, step, yoga, Pilates, and I love to walk outside to get the fresh air and sunshine. I finally bought a Vitamix (I stopped juicing - I want the nutrients in my body) and I still use it every single day for getting a huge amount of veggies and berries. I had been on weight loss diets all my life, and that was a struggle, because I could never shake my addiction to sweets, carbs, etc. Terry also talks about the importance of moving our bodies and having strong emotional bonds with the people in our lives. That last one has been harder for me in the last year, and the stress of it taught me a lot about how my body reacts to negative thoughts in my mind."

The Brain's Way of Healing: Remarkable Discoveries and Recoveries from the Frontiers of Neuroplasticity
Winner of the 2015 Gold Nautilus Award in Science & Cosmology In his groundbreaking work The Brain That Changes Itself , Norman Doidge introduced readers to neuroplasticity—the brain’s ability to change its own structure and function in response to activity and mental experience. Doidge explores cases where patients alleviated chronic pain; recovered from debilitating strokes, brain injuries, and learning disorders; overcame attention deficit and learning disorders; and found relief from symptoms of autism, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and cerebral palsy. Neurology used to be considered a depressing discipline with patients often displaying fascinating but essentially untreatable symptoms and disabilities. The book is a treasure trove of the author’s own deep insights and a clear bright light of optimism shines through every page.”. —V. In one of the most riveting books on the human brain and its mystery powers ever written, Doidge addresses the role of alternative medical therapies to reset and re-sync the dynamic patterns of ‘energy in our brain, whit the ability to restore relatively normal health to those whose fate seems hopeless. In this age of distraction and unnatural environments and actions—like staring at screens all day—brain science offers all kinds of useful techniques to care for our infinitely complex selves. Norman Doidge’s work is a Michelin Guide to this hopeful new trove of knowledge and insight.”. — Boston Globe , USA. “Stunning . He brings a whole new level of insight into the body, brain, mind connection that will impact any reader.”. — John J. Ratey, MD, Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School and author of Driven to Distraction “Bold, remarkable . The Brain’s Way of Healing is brilliantly organized, scientifically documented, and a beautifully written narrative that captivates the reader, who is left with the profound message that the brain, similar to other organs, can heal.”. —Stephen W. Porges, PhD, Indiana University Bloomington and author of The Polyvagal Theory. “Doidge’s book is filled with compelling stories about the power of ingenious technologies and disciplined awareness methods generated by innovators who transcended their own brain challenges, and who now use them to help others make radical improvements in conditions often deemed hopeless. It points to a future of remarkable and unprecedented brain healing.”. —Martha Herbert, MD, PhD, Neurologist, Harvard Medical School, and Massachusetts General Hospital, author of The Autism Revolution “ The Brain’s way of Healing is a stunner—the sort of book you want to read several times, not because it is difficult to understand, but because it opens up so many novel and startling avenues into our potential to heal. Norman Doidge enthralls us with a rich combination of lucidly explained brain research and pioneering new (and some not so new, but not widely known) approaches to recovery. With an eloquence reminiscent of Oliver Sacks, Doidge bolsters the latest advances in brain science with a series of extraordinary case histories of people for whom all hope seemed to be lost, but who healed as a result of great personal courage, and by changing the ways their bodies and brains processed sensations and movement. This hopeful book demonstrates that a variety of sensory inputs—light, sound, electricity, vibration, movement, and thought—can awaken the brain’s attention processors, and thereby allow even the most afflicted to (re)gain ownership of their lives. The book also has a number of creative integrations of the data that will be of interest to neuroscientists.”. —Edward Taub, Ph.D., Behavioral Neuroscientist, University Professor,University of Alabama at Birmingham, Director, UAB CI Therapy Research Group and Taub Training Clinic. “Everyone who has a brain could benefit from reading Doidge’s book.”. — The Columbus Dispatch “A vivid, robust and optimistic read . In friendly vignettes reminiscent of Oliver Sacks’s case studies, Doidge chronicles the heroic efforts of patients with a wide variety of apparently intractable ailments, from chronic pain to multiple sclerosis. Doidge’s penchant for considering unconventional approaches to healing offers hope for all.”. — Bookpage , USA. “Beautifully written . “A fascinating study on brain science that shows the way to major therapeutic discoveries.”. — Library Journal.

"My review of "The Brain's Way of Healing" is that of someone who experienced one of the therapies he describes, the Tomatis Method, many years before Norman Doidge's book was published. For me, this is a practical subject, and I hope to shed some light both on this book and to address the natural skepticism that one might has who has not experienced or known someone who has benefited from the type of therapies Dr. Doidge describes. After doing Tomatis, the needle lifted, I wanted to live again, and I returned to college and finished a degree program within three years after completing my initial treatment. The point remains, I went from a phase where I was not functioning to one where I was renewed and not only got back on my feet, but accomplished a task - finishing a 4-year university program - that I had been unable to do at an earlier age. Norman Doidge's book is a welcome sign of the times, a beacon of light and hope that gives these alternative therapies the respect and consideration that they deserve."
"In chapter 2, Doidge walks with John Pepper, a World War II survivor with Parkinson's disease who devised a program that enabled him to recover lost mobility and other functions. Doidge presents 4 stages of neuroplastic healing, which gives us new ways of understanding how recovery occurs. The energy provided by neurostimulation enables the brain to repair communication pathways and regain its innate capacity to regulate or "modulate" itself. Some people presented have recovered fully from autoimmune-induced blindness, dyslexia, sensory integration problems, and serious debilitating developmental delays (each detailed through case studies in later book chapters). With some symptoms and chronic diseases, people need to keep using their tools to maintain their gains but can also recover again after periods of discontinuation. At the other extreme, recovery from chronic symptoms of traumatic brain injury (TBI) began for two women within hours of initial treatment. In this setting, neurostimulation energized neurons to better modulate, allowing them to begin to communicate more effectively almost immediately."
"I fell in love with Feldenkrais again after reading about it in The Brain's Way of Healing, learning new things about a modality that I thought I was familiar with. If you have an interest in medicine, healing, psychology, psychiatry, spirituality, sound, light, movement, physics, disabilities, TBI, or compelling personal stories, get this book."
"I learned a lot about the human brain and how it can "rewire" itself."
"The medical profession is far behind using the techniques which this book highlights as new approaches for the treatment of complex and important problems within the brain and focuses on other alternatives to recovery from stroke, Parkinsonism, autism, to name a few important neurological conditions that could benefit from greater knowledge of treatments beyond the standard drug (limited) focus."

Fat for Fuel: A Revolutionary Diet to Combat Cancer, Boost Brain Power, and Increase Your Energy
What if scientists are chasing a flawed paradigm, and cancer isn’t a disease of damaged DNA but rather of defective metabolism as a result of mitochondrial dysfunction ? In this groundbreaking guide, the first of its kind, New York Times best-selling author and leading natural-health practitioner Joseph Mercola explains how nearly all disease is caused by defective metabolic processes. Then he reveals what’s really causing your metabolism to go haywire: damage and dysfunction in the mitochondria, thousands of which are at work in nearly every cell in your body, generating 90 percent of the energy you need to stay alive and well. This is a life-changing text that not only provides a deep dive into why choosing fat as our primary fuel source powerfully correlates with health and disease resistance, but also delivers in terms of how the reader can easily bring about this fundamentally important change. Mercola’s science-based refutation of this status quo provides a welcome and compassionate response, allowing readers to regain and maintain optimal health.”. “This remarkable book presents a truly revolutionary program that can help millions of people achieve optimal health. Dr. Mercola clearly explains the importance of mitochondria for metabolic function and carefully guides his readers with detailed practical advice for enhancing their activity. Dr. Mercola is one of the few who have properly understood and embraced my long-standing belief that one’s health and lifespan is mostly determined by the proportion of fat versus sugar one burns over a lifetime. But one thing has become increasingly evident over the past decade: teaching our bodies to use fat instead of glucose as the main fuel source has immense potential to support patients suffering from some of the most devastating chronic diseases. Dr. Mercola’s Fat for Fuel will be an invaluable resource for me in two ways: personally, because I’m a cancer patient myself striving to create an environment that will keep my disease at bay, but also professionally as a nutritional therapist. “ Fat for Fuel is required reading for anyone wishing to radically and expeditiously address a current health crisis and also for those of us seeking to ameliorate genetic predispositions as we age.”. — Travis Christofferson , author of Tripping over the Truth: How the Metabolic Theory of Cancer Is Overturning One of Medicine’s Most Entrenched Paradigms. With so much conflicting information in the nutrition world, this book serves as a critical resource for every physician in training or in practice, and for every person eager to avoid the need for those doctors.”. This is an extremely valuable guidebook for those seeking to understand and implement transformational dietary changes to boost their metabolic and cellular function. In his book Fat for Fuel , Joe Mercola has given us a practical blueprint for how to revive our mitochondria using diet as a powerful foundation, with a few other added simple tools, such as intermittent fasting, exercise, light therapy, and some supplemental nutrients. Dr. Mercola tested the Mitochondrial Metabolic Therapy recommendations he makes in this book on himself, with many months of trials and errors and continuous glucose monitoring. I highly endorse Fat for Fuel as the most practical do-it-yourself guide available today for people to take back control of their health and resolve chronic illnesses.”. In this pathbreaking book, Dr. Joseph Mercola goes a critical step further, revealing that using fat as your main fuel source can heal your body at a mitochondrial level, restoring energy and well-being and even helping fight cancer and other diseases. , #1 New York Times best-selling author of Eat Fat Get Thin and Director of the Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Functional Medicine. This book will contribute greatly toward our health goals for our entire population as more and more health-care professionals wake up to this understanding of the importance of optimizing mitochondrial metabolism. Mercola is a deep thinker with a passion for seeking knowledge about the inner workings of the human body and an open mind about the role of successful alternative treatments that have hard evidence behind them. With medical science understanding more and more how mitochondrial dysfunction leads to chronic disease, Dr. Mercola provides a simple, natural healing plan with this important new book.”. Dr. Mercola is at the forefront of this exciting revolution, and this book gives you both the theoretical basis and practical suggestions for supporting your mitochondria and regaining better health. The book defies the status quo and reveals the truth behind everything from why fasting is a healthy habit to why you need to become a fat-burning machine. This book is a must-read if you want to optimize your body and brain while systematically eliminating a host of risk factors for chronic disease.”. “In a bold voice and in plain language, Dr. Mercola continues his role as nutrition pioneer for America and the world. “ Fat for Fuel consolidates the latest cutting-edge metabolic discoveries into an easy-to-follow system for optimizing your health at the cellular level. My hope is that this book will produce the tipping point leading to needed changes in our collective thinking about the power of nutrition as medicine. This important book teaches principles most people have not yet heard and extends its reach beyond the small group of practitioners around the world who are already utilizing these methods. Not only does this page-turner highlight the need for fat in our diet, it shows us how to prepare our bodies to process and utilize it most efficiently—a key ingredient in the overall strategy to attain optimal health.”. I’ve read hundreds of nutrition books over my lifetime but this one is my favorite and the one I know will make the biggest impact on your health if you have the commitment to follow it to the letter.

"I have done low carb in the past and experienced good short term results but this feels different. I purchased the ketosis test sticks on amazon (about $10) and on about my 6th day it was a medium color purple. That's obviously really good (I don't care if its water weight--it is 11 lbs less i'm hauling around), but what is more satisfying is how hunger and cravings go away. I think what helped me get into moderate ketosis is that I cut out all added sugar immediately and all flour. My goal is net 40 grams of carbs, but I'm probably closer to 30grams (I track everything on an online app). My diet has consisted mainly of the following (prepared varioius ways for different meals) eggs, avocado, berries, hemp protein powder, olives, olive oil, mct oil, beef/chicken/fish, macadamia nuts, pumpkin/sunflower seeds riced cauliflower/broccoli, kale/spinach, onions and garlic and spices. I do an 18 hr fast each day (6pm-Noon) and eating as recommended in the book makes it easy."
"Dr. Joseph Mercola's Fat For Fuel is a MUST read - even if you think you do not agree with the concept of eating fat (instead of copious carbohydrates)."
"Once again, Dr. Mercola takes a multitude of information and states it in a way that we can all understand and apply to our lives for better health and healing. Back in 1997 I stumbled upon his website and thought that he might just know what he's talking about because he sounds like my Grandma (who learned from reading Adelle Davis) and he spoke of things that I was just starting to be concerned with. As a registered nurse I have witnessed the pain and suffering endured by my patients and their families while the pharmaceutical companies and for-profit medical community thrive. I have been fired countless times for being a strong patient advocate and empowering my patients to do their research and question their doctors, to not give up the fight, to not settle for unanswered questions and ill health because we CAN heal ourselves or AT LEAST reduce the suffering in the worst case scenarios. (Bad enough that no one ever tells the patients to fast for 12 hours before a cholesterol test, but then to not even give them an accurate explanation of those results is a sin in the highest degree)."

Heal Your Headache
Based on the breakthrough understanding that virtually all headaches are forms of migraine--because migraine is not a specific type of headache, but the built-in mechanism that causes headaches of all kinds, along with neck stiffness, sinus congestion, dizziness, and other problems--Dr. Buchholz's Heal Your Headache puts headache sufferers back in control of their lives with a simple, transforming program. -- Howard Kirshner, M.D., Professor and Vice Chair, Department of Neurology, Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.

"In the last five years, I have tried almost everything - traditional neurology treatments, acupuncture, cranial sacral massage, meditation, yoga, chiropractic, and even Botox. Most things would work for a short period of time (a few days to a few months, in the case of Botox, acupuncture, and chiropractic). In a moment of frustration, I put up a post on Facebook about how tired I was of these headaches interfering with my life; a friend responded with a link to this book. I started reading this book at home on a Saturday night of a week of bad headaches. I finally felt like someone out there believed what kind of pain I was in, in addition to 'odd' symptoms I was having (balance problems, inability to concentrate, bizarre feelings like my left arm was not part of my body, etc.). Once you start feeling relief, you realize following the diet is not much of a price to pay for getting your life back. Also, I have stopped feeling angry at my body and at the world for this suffering I've gone through - which is a big stress relief in itself."
"I had seen 14 different doctors in the last 15 months. For 15 months I had been unable to function most of the time."
"Although I have read many different books on migraine over the 30 years that I have suffered from them, this book concisely summarized much of what I had gleaned over the years and expanded my understanding of the many facets of migraine."
"I purchased the 123 heal your headache book after years of terrible daily migraine pain. I followed the book as well as I could; the diet part is rather difficult and apparently I have no self control when it comes to food. I started feeling the same way and started eating what I wanted although the MSG part of the diet had become second nature, I am an avid label reader anyway. I am still on some medications to help prevent migraines and I am still VERY sesitive, but I am NOT suffering like I had been before reading this book."

"I saw three endocrinologists, three GPs, two neurologists, numerous chiropractors and massage therapists, two acupuncturists, and even a life coach and hypnotist (pretty much any health related professional whose bio suggested they might be able to help). This book introduced me to two concepts that were critical: Functional medicine, and Hashimoto's Gluten sensitivity. This led to several significant changes. The second came when I started looking for functional medicine doctors in Austin, TX and following the supplementation suggestions put forward in this book. Empty Stomach (AM): - Licorice drops. - Probiotic. - Saccharomyces Boulardii. Lunch: - Glutamine. - Methyl B12 (my Dr suspects a MTHFR gene mutation; regular B12 wasn't helping but this works great). - NAC. - Zinc (this was huge for me; gave me lots more energy). - Selenium. Bedtime: - Magnesium. - CoQ10. - Probiotic. - Fish Oil w/vitamin D. Many of these don't have to be taken with food and the order could be switched up. I'd recommend chatting with your doctor about lab work for vitamin deficiencies and reading Dr. Wentz's supplement guide."
"I've read the Stop The Thyroid Madness site, Mary Shamon's thyroid-info website, Dr. Alexander Haskell's book, Dr. Datiz Kharrazian's book and his diet recommendations, read what Jack Kruse has to say... I've looked into the GAPS diet, the paleo diet, the autoimmune paleo diet, and researched intestinal permeability and how to heal it. I'm so thrilled to have this book, it still seems too good to be true! :). I would suggest though, if there is ever a second printing, and an updated version, that the author include more advice/info on finding a good functional/integrative/holistic Dr. to work with, which testing is available and from which labs, how to navigate testing solo or with your Dr., etc."

"I have read just about every Lupus book out there--from memoir to treatise, from books aimed at neophytes to those targeted at the experienced patient. And (unlike other Lupus books) anyone who treats Lupus patients--as a physician or nurse--should also read it. I do like that Dr. Thomas has not watered down his book as other physicians do, and that he assumes that Lupus patients can choose to read those sections or not."

Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease: The Revolutionary, Scientifically Proven, Nutrition-Based Cure
The New York Times bestselling guide to the lifesaving diet that can both prevent and help reverse the effects of heart disease Based on the groundbreaking results of his twenty-year nutritional study, Prevent. and Reverse Heart Disease by Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn illustrates that a plant-based, oil-free diet can not only prevent the progression of heart disease but can also reverse its effects. Caldwell Esselstyn has directed pioneering research demonstrating that the progression of even severe coronary heart disease can often be reversed by making comprehensive change in diet and lifestyle.“. —Dean Ornish, M.D, founder, president and director of Preventive Medicine Research Institute and author of Dr. Dean Ornish’s Program for Reversing Heart Disease. His focus on the healing powers of proper nutrition on diseased coronary arteries has now proven right, raising another unthinkable notion—that heart patients can cure themselves.”. —Bernadine Healy, M.D., former Director of the National Institutes of Health. “A hard nosed scientist shows us his secrets for successfully cleaning the rusting arteries of so many patients - and it doesn't even hurt.”. —Mehmet Oz, M.D., coauthor, You: The Owner’s Manual. Based on decades of research, Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn has shown not only how to prevent heart disease, but how to reverse it-even for people who have been affected for many years. Half of all Americans dying today could have changed their date with the undertaker by following Dr. Esselstyn’s plan.”. —Howard F. Lyman, author of No More Bull! Esselstyn's eminently successful arrest-and-reversal therapy for heart disease through patient education and empowerment as the treatment of choice will send shock waves through a mercenary medical system that focuses largely on pills and procedures.”. —Hans Diehl, Founder & Director of the Coronary Health Improvement Program (CHIP).

"I accidently stumbled upon Dr. Esselstyn's research and recommendations when I was bed ridden with severe blood pressure which was getting worse by the day and I knew that it was just a matter of limited time before I expire."
"I have a gym in my garage, with pull-up tower and padded floor and TV/DVD player. In other words, I was in pretty good shape and thought I was OK. On April 8, 2013, I had just finished exercising. I noticed a slight numbness in my left arm. Told my wife to take me to the new heart hospital, conveniently located about 1 1/2 miles from my house. 45 minutes after walking into the ER, I was being wheeled into my room with 2 stents installed. The Cardiologist said that in my main artery, towards the center of my chest, I had 100% blockage. In the other main artery, on the other side of my heart, there is 50% blockage. I went to Amazon and looked for books on cardiovascular disease. My wife and I read the reviews and decided to give it a try. Since we started the plant eating lifestyle, she doesn't have stomach aches anymore. A friend of mine watched the Forks Over Knives documentary with his parents and they all decided to try it. At the start of the plant diet, his blood sugar was 253. After one week of plant eating he dropped 120 points! It works Yesterday my Cardiologist said that I am doing so great that he doesn't need to see me for 6 months!"
"Using the information in Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease, I now eat a plant-based diet, which I've been on for a couple of months now. My rule of thumb is this: If it had a mother and a father (beef, chicken, turkey, fish, etc. Since I've been eating plant-based foods only -- and there's a LOT to choose from -- my blood pressure has dropped, I've lost about 14 pounds, I sleep far more soundly, my thinking is clearer, I have more energy, etc. UPDATE: I've now lost 20 pounds, and another blood draw revealed that my cholesterol level has dropped 30 points."
"More people should read it before they find themselves needing to go to the doctor."
"Extreme diet for those with heart disease, can be followed rigorously by those who want to prevent heart disease (in my opinion)."
"My husband picked this book up while in the doctors office and began to read it, when we got home he ask if I would order him a copy."
"Great book and great recipes."

Reviews

Lucky Man: A Memoir
Now, with the same passion, humor, and energy that Fox has invested in his dozens of performances over the last 18 years, he tells the story of his life, his career, and his campaign to find a cure for Parkinson's. Combining his trademark ironic sensibility and keen sense of the absurd, he recounts his life--from his childhood in a small town in western Canada to his meteoric rise in film and television which made him a worldwide celebrity. He talks about what Parkinson's has given him: the chance to appreciate a wonderful life and career, and the opportunity to help search for a cure and spread public awareness of the disease. The Foundation will move aggressively to identify the most promising research and raise the funds to assure that a cure is found for the millions of people living with this disorder. The same sharp intelligence and self-deprecating wit that made Michael J. Fox a star in the Family Ties TV series and Back to the Future make this a lot punchier than the usual up-from-illness celebrity memoir.
Reviews
"Perhaps the title Lucky Man was intended to reveal more of his life and not as much about Parkinson's He was indeed a lucky man to be where he is today with his career as compared to his early problem filled years. It is refreshing to read what he has done to turn his life around."
"As someone who has an incurable degenerative muscle disorder, I could relate so much to Michael and his struggles described in this book."
"Fantastic book and highly recommended with a poisitive message to his readers. Now that he allowed us to have an insight into his inner world, it was amazing to see what he could do to make things go right and to an end phenomena of a positive point despite his condition. Which show how much his self determinism view, is so important and above all that he was willing to sacrifice his life. The language he uses is literate and reading his book is very enjoyable, leaving us with a message of, no mercy, but "one can always do something about it"."
"I was diagnosed with MS about 5 years ago and I find such a connection with Michael J Fox and his struggle to come to terms with his disease."
"Meant to read this long ago, bought it for my kindle when it first released."
"He feels that he has grown so much in a positive way from his post Parkinson's diagnosis experiences. I only got it because it was the cheap Kindle deal of the day and thought it would be an interesting read. I remember when I first saw him on the show (it was the episode where he made some great investments in the stock market) that I thought he did have "something." He makes you feel like you kind of know him and as a result you are curious about his other performances."
"If anyone is hesitant to purchase the book on the basis of Michael's inclusion of.... curse words **gasp** I feel like they serve to make Michael's already strong narrative voice even more so, not to mention authentic."
"Michael J."

"So I quit my job and school and took time off, expecting to recuperate within a few months. I suffered severe chemical and mold sensitivities and began to develop hives. I'm not a dramatic person by nature, but I assure you, some days I wasn't sure how much sicker one could get before the body just gave up altogether. Finally, a few months ago I happened upon some website extolling the GAPS diet. I looked into it but figured I was already eating a clean (mostly) paleo diet, so I didn't need to buy this book. When I had to stay home on Christmas day because I felt so toxic and crummy, I decided to purchase the book. I had been toxic for so long that I was used to feeling lousy, but the die-off this diet produced was intense. The diet alone, even without the introduction of probiotics, sauerkraut, and kefir was enough to produce rapid die-off. However, since starting GAPS I have stopped taking the majority of my supplements, simply because I no longer need them. At long last, my diet is providing the nutrients my body has been needing all along for repair (particularly cholesterol and saturated fats, which are sadly demonized in our culture). I probably sound like a crazy person because I'm so, so excited about this book and this diet; but if you're sick like I was, you know all too well what it's like to live in a chronically ill body. Because I'm having such rapid success on the intro phase, I intend to stick with it for a few months. That's the nice thing about this diet; you move at your own pace and let your body be the guide. I'm also curious to see how this diet helps me with the mental health issues I've contended with since childhood (namely fits of debilitating anxiety, ocd, and depression that have become increasingly severe in the last few years). I had tried several SSRI's over the last ten years until a new doctor put me on Adderall (which is nothing more than a mixture of amphetamine salts and is very, very hard on the adrenals) after diagnosing me with ADHD. Reading success stories of people recovering from CFS is what got me through the worst moments. I hope my story does the same, and I will update again in a few months as I progress along my GAPS journey. I no longer seem to be affected by pollen, which in previous years gave me terrible allergies and sinus infections. I've lost 15 pounds and walk an hour or more just about daily in addition to my chores around the house. There has been no improvement on the mental stuff yet; in fact, the die-off seems to be temporarily making it much worse. I'm experiencing new die-off symptoms (caused by breaking up biofilm in my gut with probiotics and systemic enzymes, I believe) like visual disturbances, rosacea and other rashes, adrenaline rushes, numbness/tingling/burning in my extremities. I can't tell you how wonderful it feels to have some relief from this torment for the first time in over ten years (most of my adult life). It takes a long time to undo decades' worth of damage. In my case, after the infection is gone, I will still need to detox, fix my adrenals completely, get my metabolic hormones back in order, and perhaps chelate. Thanks to all of you who have commented or contacted me over the past year; it's been wonderful swapping stories and information. I am still quite toxic but can now tolerate an infrared sauna, which is great for detox, every other day. The little things that used to require so much effort are back to being a routine part of my life, i.e. doing my hair, wearing make-up, etc. There are still periods every few weeks of fatigue and die-off, where my IBS symptoms act up, anxiety and brain fog skyrocket, and I feel rough. I have read most of the other reviews here, and I am so happy about and moved by how much this diet is helping people with chronic, so-called "untreatable" conditions."
"I initially picked up this book because it had been getting discussion on an autism parenting group that I belong to. I started to learn about the diet by reading information online, then decided it was potentially worth pursuing further and purchased the book. However, as I read the book, I realized that I needed to try this diet for my own issues as well, extreme PMS and major digestive issues (which turned out to be ulcerative colitis, as diagnosed via colonoscopy 3 months after I had started the diet). There are a few other foods we typically don't eat much of either, based on working with a Nurse Practitioner who is also GAPS Certified. My daughter was sick with strep throat multiple times a year as well as extreme sinus issues. The doctors were urging us to have her tonsils and adenoids removed, yet could not guarantee that would solve the issue. After I got my colitis diagnosis, I held off taking the medication for 4.5 months, thinking that the diet would "cure" me. And then I recently started a high dose of prescription probiotics, which has helped even more. Just for my daughter and me, I typically have 3 loads of dishes in the dishwasher throughout the day, plus all the things that need to be hand washed. When we were on Intro Diet, I would have between 3 and 5 loads of dishwasher dishes going plus all the things that had to be hand washed. However, I know a few adults that are on this diet without the considerations of a child, and they also complain about the work it takes, and the several loads of dishes to clean each day. I wish that Dr. Natasha (author of GAPS Diet), would stress that it can be beneficial to seek out additional, more personalized medical advice. There is an additional website with more up to date information that needs to be checked fairly often for updates. How in the world do you explain to an 8 year old child who has been slowly going through Intro Diet and has been doing this for a year that you are going to have to backtrack and spend 6+ months only eating broth, boiled meats and boiled vegetables, and raw egg yolks. This diet is very emotional and I find that even being farther along on it that I tend to have low morale with all the work and being exhausted with it. When we initially started this diet, the information was to move through the stages once you no longer see "reactions" or symptoms improve. And now all of the sudden the information is that if certain things have not improved, go back and stay in Stage 2 for 6+ months. And, it is important to know that the diet also draws heavily from Traditional Dietary guidelines as put forth by the Weston A. Price Foundation (google that), along with the cookbook Nourishing Traditions (can be found on amazon). Although not specifically addressing the same issues, there are many more Paleo blogs with recipes online than GAPS. Paleo recipes sometimes require some easy modification of either leaving out an ingredient or two or substituting."

"A great resource for the book I'm writing."
"Good Information to know in an emergency."
"I had a version of it 30 years ago."
"Well written, I am medical, but I believe a lay person can understand most of the info.......Great book."
"There's little technical terms....it's not even PC : ). My favorite part of the book is the "general conditions of health" lessons. There are specific instructions on what types of questions to ask, how to examine eyes, pulse, ears, nose & throat, skin, abdomen and muscles/nerves and look for any signs of illness. In times of disruption of services or mass emergencies, such as a natural disaster, this information could prove to be invaluable. Having the ability to evaluate & treat cuts of all sizes, burns and other injuries also could be invaluable at times of restricted medical access, as well as avoiding unnecessary trips to emergency rooms. There is a lot included in this book that I will likely never need as I don't travel much, and don't ever plan to treat or evaluate other human beings outside my family, but I understand it is largely written for areas with little or no access to professional medical services. While obviously meant for 3rd world conditions, in a Katrina type situation, there may be some helpful tips or pointers. Most Americans already know the basics on sanitation, but might have a tougher time than we think with the practicality if ever faced with an emergency situation."
"Treating patients in the third world without a laboratory, X-ray, or other modern tools takes a different mindset that WHERE THERE IS NO DOCTOR puts into perspective."
"Happy to have it in my library."

On Becoming Baby Wise: Giving Your Infant the Gift of Nighttime Sleep
For over 20 years, On Becoming Babywise has been the de facto newborn parenting manual for naturally synchronizing your baby's feeding time, waketime and nighttime sleep cycles, so the whole family can sleep through the night. Practical discussions then focus on broad and niche topics including feeding philosophies, baby sleep problems, baby scheduling challenges, nap routines, sleep training multiples, baby sleeping props, Colic and Reflux and many other dimensions which impact breast feeding schedules, bottle feeding tips and baby sleep training. 1) Taking care of baby and mom. 2) A timeline of what to expect and when. 3) Baby Sleep Training Problems and Solutions. 4) Monitoring Your Baby's Growth. 5) Healthy Baby Growth Charts. It can help any parent develop a plan that meets both the needs of a new baby and of the entire family. Instead of being in baby bondage, I was liberated to be the mother God wanted me to be. We highly recommend ONLY purchasing the newest and most current version of On Becoming Babywise (isbn 1932740139). In becoming one of America's leading infant management guides, On Becoming Babywise has continued to improve its methods and practices throughout its 24 years and this latest version is the result of all the best over the last two decades. and co-author Gary Ezzo in this book helps parents successfully and naturally synchronize their baby's feeding time, waketime and nighttime cycles. Happy, healthy and contented babies who sleep through the night on average between seven and nine weeks of age. The best evaluation of any parenting philosophy, including Babywise, is not found in the reasoning or the logic of the hypothesis. Rather, our larger objective is to help prepare minds for the incredible task of raising a child. Your baby will not care if his head rests on designer sheets or beside Disney characters, nor is your success tied to his wardrobe or bedroom accessories, but rather to the beliefs and convictions that will eventually shape your parenting experience. It is our opinion that the achievements of healthy growth, contented babies, good naps, and playful wake times, as well as the gift of nighttime sleep, are too valuable to be left to chance. We realize there are a number of parenting theories being marketed today, most of which come gift-wrapped with unrealistic promises and unnecessary burdens. Spend time with relatives and friends who follow the Attachment Parenting style of infant care. The principles contained within the pages can help parents develop workable strategies that meet the needs of their babies and the rest of the family. However, your pediatrician or family practitioner should always be consulted when questions arise about the health and welfare of your baby. Because the principles of On Becoming Babywise are so effective, I consider it part of my extended health care for the family. They consistently produce babies who are healthy, content, and who sleep through the night at an early age. ". As family physicians and a husband-wife team, we are often asked questions related to parenting and the general care of children.

Dr. Fuhrman makes clear that we don’t have to “control” diabetes. JOEL FUHRMAN, M.D., is a board-certified family physician and nutritional researcher who specializes in preventing and reversing disease through nutritional and natural methods.

"I hardly ever write reviews but I feel compelled to share my wife, Robyn's, experience after five weeks on Dr. Fuhrman's diet. She ate a full filet of salmon with two cobs of corn and a full cup of great northern beans with onions and garlic. Needless to say, tomorrow we will be back on this diet permanently with only an infrequent special occasion to interrupt it. If you suffer from type 2 diabetes but are willing to dedicate yourself to this diet, make no mistake, it will reverse your disease and give you a great chance at a long, complication-free life. 8-17-2016 UPDATE. New test results from recent blood work: Triglycerides six week ago - 259."
"I started the ADA diet and followed it 100% for a few weeks and could not get my blood sugar to go below 140. I started the diet that day and the next morning my blood sugar was down to 100, the next day was in the 90's and now i have a fasting blood sugar between Mid 70's and the 80's. My doctor took me off the metformin after just one week of being on this lifestyle change."
"When I read the recipes in the back of the book I thought they were so radical that no one, unless they were, 'on death's doorstep', would eat that way. I was diagnosed with diabetes two years ago and since then, my life has been a rollercoaster between feeling awful and just fair. I'm also eating steel cut oats and taking red rice yeast. I see on his website you can sign up, for a nominal sum, and get additional recipes and recommendations, etc., personally, I think that's, 'milking', it but, that's just my opinion. When I began this way of eating, my blood sugar was 7.8 and my doctor wanted to start me on insulin...which I was VERY opposed to. AND, although I stick to it about 99% I do use olive oil when I want to, I eat grilled shrimp on a caesar salad smothered in grated cheese occasionally."

She is the National Spokesperson for the Mentally Ill for the Harvard Brain Tissue Resource Center (Brain Bank) and the Consulting Neuroantomist for the Midwest Proton Radiotherapy Institute.
Reviews
"I thought it was interesting how she described the feeling of euphoria as the logical side of her brain was shutting down. After that, I just skimmed until I found the one chapter talking about recovery in very general terms, such as it took her 4-5 years before she could add and subtract again. I gave the book to my mom who is apparently finding it more interesting than me."
"This is an amazing true account of a brain scientists journey during and after she experienced a stoke."
"This short book gave me such great insights into the nature of our brains and the way these brains and the hemispheres enable us to interact with the world around us."
"Good book to help one understand the tragedy of a stroke and how we need to be very caring for those people and understand what they are going through."

Praise for The Wahls Protocol “In The Wahls Protocol, Dr. Wahls provides elegant first hand validation that diet truly represents the most powerful medicine. Reviews

"A galvanizing call to arms against a gluten-heavy diet....Perlmutter's credentials as a board-certified neurologist and American College of Nutrition Fellow make him a uniquely qualified voice in the debate about which foods are best for the brain and body." "I'm never hungry, I get to eat all kinds of meats and cheeses and veggies, and I don't even bother counting calories.
"This book has answered what I haven't gotten from other Drs.. My skin is dry and hair thining, I truly needed more fat in my diet and now see that grains were my problem and low fat has starved my body of needed oils...."
"As Mark Twain commented on New England weather, "If you don't like the weather just wait a minute, it'll change," it seems the same holds true for medical/health research studies."

"I love how she gives you her story and reason for writing the book (it's not the normal introduction in my opinion- it's honest and personal); I love that she explains why certain foods or "foods" aren't good for our body (she did her research); and I love how she provides tools to help you transition to your whole foods journey (a self assessment, 10 day meal plan, goal sheet). Lastly, I enjoy her writing tone which makes it easier to read and take in all the health info. Other things that I appreciate in this book- Tia Tips and a look into common health topics like GMOs, dairy and calcium, iodine in table salt. Now, I haven't tried any recipes yet and I will be updating my review after I do, but they all look good, healthy and I hope they are tasty."

"About a year ago I had a doctor insist that I needed to go back to PT with the purpose of developing and implementing a full-body strengthening program. I begrudgingly went because he wouldn't drop it and lucked into seeing someone who understands connective tissue disorders and how to go about treating them. Unfortunately, we haven't been able to work on a full body preventative strengthening program because we have been dealing with multiple injuries. Negative: * The author makes it clear in his introduction that you are to use this book with a physical therapist. * He is also adamant that you need to follow the protocol of progression of exercises exactly, without skipping around to address things that hurt NOW (chronic injuries). On some level I understand this reasoning because dealing with a long string of chronic and new injuries is what has prevented me from figuring out a whole body program with my PT. As a patient, I think there needs to be a balance between keeping the chronic injuries under control and working on the preventative. To reach more people the author went through and also included a translation into normal person speak. In addition to the quality of the pictures, the model is wearing a baggy shirt and shorts that obscures his knees and elbows. * He states that you need to have a geneticist diagnose hypermobile EDS and then after the diagnosis you start the protocol and assemble your team. Those specialists did things and gave me information that immediately improved my quality of life. He gives instructions to the physical therapist on how they need to modify massage and mobilization techniques to avoid accidentally injuring you. I am going to have my PT double check my form on the exercises before I start doing them at home and I do plan to work through the protocol as it is written."
