I purchased the ketosis test sticks on amazon (about $10) and on about my 6th day it was a medium color purple. That's obviously really good (I don't care if its water weight--it is 11 lbs less i'm hauling around), but what is more satisfying is how hunger and cravings go away. I think what helped me get into moderate ketosis is that I cut out all added sugar immediately and all flour. My goal is net 40 grams of carbs, but I'm probably closer to 30grams (I track everything on an online app). My diet has consisted mainly of the following (prepared varioius ways for different meals) eggs, avocado,berries, hemp protein powder, olives, olive oil, mct oil, beef/chicken/fish, macadamia nuts, pumpkin/sunflower seeds riced cauliflower/broccoli, kale/spinach, onions and garlic and spices. I do an 18 hr fast each day (6pm-Noon) and eating as recommended in the book makes it easy."

I originally started on Atkins and eventually changed my diet according to what I always thought was common sense - For example - While staying under 30 carbs a day I added 2 servings of fruit, ate lots of fatty fish (only wild caught), eliminated processed meats (e.g.: bacon, cold cuts) and replaced them with GRASS FED, naturally raised meats while restricting my calories. Add in some interval workouts, get plenty of sleep, try not to get too stressed and BAM - the weight comes off! He cites both anthropological and biochemical evidence to support the plan in an easy to understand, fun read. Yes, even SATURATED fat, as long as it is from a natural source - no GMO's or anything processed. This will reduce chronic inflammation in your body, which is the root cause of most autoimmune diseases today and a major factor on poor health and weight gain (as explained very clearly in Robb's book). Reducing carbs will also help restore your body's sensitivity to both insulin and leptin, two key hormones tied to energy storage and utilization. You need to "RESET" your leptin receptors so that your brain starts listening to the "Stop eating" signal. You can find more information on this by looking into Dr. Jack Kruse, the neurosurgeon who is pioneering the notion that increasing leptin sensitivity is the key to weight loss. It is universally accepted that eating breakfast is a cornerstone of a healthy lifestyle, why not make it a big one that keeps you going throughout the day. Beef should be grass fed, eggs should be free range, and fish should be wild caught. Omega 3 fish oil has been PROVEN to transform the small, high density form of LDL cholesterol (which damages your arteries) to the soft fluffy (safe) variety of LDL. You would have to swallow ten of those softgels to get the same amount of omega three found in ONE can of cold water sardines! I always knew this theory of "Eating 6 small meals a day to keep your metabolism from slowing down" was bull. Warm up with a little cardio, and switch to body-weight or weight bearing exercises. This is a great idea - you will sleep more soundly if your body isn't working hard to digest dinner. Years ago, I sucked on two packs of Newports a day and was able to quit. Make no mistake, refined carbohydrates are insidious and will kill you just as surely as smoking will - probably faster. This body equates this stress to fear of starvation, and reacts by retaining as much energy (calories) as possible. My recommendation: Take up a hobby at the same time you begin restricting carbs. Fill your spare time doing something you enjoy and distract your sub conscience from what it is being denied."

When you read this book, it is important to understand that there is an overall concept here that many illnesses and symptoms, that so many suffer from, are a "mystery" to current medical practices. For someone who does a quick read through, with the bias of what most people believe to be true, the information in this book can appear deceivingly simple and perhaps even nothing new. However, if you take the opportunity to read this book with "beginner’s mind" (as one of my best teachers likes to say), you may find that this book has some considerable things to teach. This can be hard to do, and yet, the way this book is suggesting to heal is so brilliant and kind and gentle, that it should actually be the first step that we all take with our bodies. It took me awhile to get it when working with Anthony because it really is a different way to think about healing and what is actually going on in our bodies than we have been told. A practitioner that I went to many years ago told me a story that helped me in my own healing and being able to grasp how important the information in this book is. It is this that Anthony and Spirit are writing about in this book. Since it is a common question in many reviews, I want to clarify that I purchased the book, that I have actually read the book, and I was not offered anything to write this review. "I got sick with what could be labeled Chronic Fatigue Syndrome - and a whole lot of other things eventually - just weeks after the floor and after a winter of feeding moldy hay. We bought a full spectrum infrared sauna since Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt highly rec's them for his Lyme patients. Just after the sauna purchase, I saw the free MM chapter on Facebook and followed the link. I was intrigued by the notion that Lyme was really viral and it made sense to me that THAT is why 1) antibiotics fail and in fact can make it worse and (yes, i experienced this) and 2) the sauna would work b/c it raises core body temperature which is then anti-viral. I'm now on day 3 of the cleanse, working on my adrenals, liver, and blood sugar (yup, forgot to mention that but my paleo diet landed me with pre-diabetes). This book teaches you how to change your body from a sugar-burner to a fat burner, which is what you are when you are in ketosis. Ketosis is when your body no longer is using carbs as its fuel source but fat. This book showed me that fat is integral for your success of achieving ketosis and proper fat-burning. Once in a while I will get hungry and want to turn to a quick carb anything but have learned to have nuts, cheese, etc. I do not crave sugar that much anymore and if I do I have learned incredible replacement recipes that take care of it. Here are some interesting things I have eaten and even adapted "my own" versions from: Buttered Coffee!! Peanut butter shake, chocolate covered nuts, my adaptation of one recipe is lemon coconut chocolate cheesecake....this is so good and it does not taste "diet" at all!! Its easy recipes have allowed me to immediately start this way of eating unlike some other books where you have to build up a huge food list before you can really begin."

The second came when I started looking for functional medicine doctors in Austin, TX and following the supplementation suggestions put forward in this book. Lunch: - Glutamine. - Methyl B12 (my Dr suspects a MTHFR gene mutation; regular B12 wasn't helping but this works great). - NAC. - Zinc (this was huge for me; gave me lots more energy). - Selenium. Bedtime: - Magnesium. - CoQ10. - Probiotic. - Fish Oil w/vitamin D. Many of these don't have to be taken with food and the order could be switched up. I think this book speaks more to the food preferences of Mr. Olmstead than a more comprehensive treatment of the thousands of food products you'll find in a typical grocery store.
