This won't make you an expert in electronics, it is definitely on the simple side of things (like algebraic simplifications of mathematical models that are actually rooted in calculus or differential equations), but that's exactly what I was looking for. Seems steep but if you plan on making use of your new-found knowledge for the foreseeable future, you will be using these tools well after you've worked through this book."
"Fun book, I plan on buying a ket to try out the expereiments."
"This book's layout kept me turning it's pages to learn more."
"Still reading it... but looks very interesting."
"Great simplified color illustrations and great explanations."
"As expected."

While most books on electro-optical systems concentrate on an individual subfield, this one presents an overview of the whole field, providing researchers with working knowledge of a number of cross-disciplinary areas. Philip C. D. Hobbs, PhD , is Principal of ElectroOptical Innovations, a consultancy in Briarcliff Manor, New York.

Find Best Price at Amazon"Most of the book is a medium-depth guide by the author to the large variety of optics, sensors, and electronics typically employed for such work. The author tells the reader the important things necessary to know in order to work with or design systems around such elements. The author however is an expert in both, and this expertise is apparent in his designs of integrated systems for laser noise cancelling, etc. My biggest complaint is that the current edition (sold here) does not have the useful "Rules of Thumb" (e.g. Johnson noise of a 60.4 Ohm resistor is 1 nV/Hz^(1/2) at 300 K, photocurrent shot noise is equal to Johnson noise when the terminating resistor drops 50 mV, etc.)."
"Just about any problem faced in our experiment has already been thought of in great detail by Hobbs and he makes it very clear and intuitive why certain design choices are correct and why other ones will lead you down dangerous paths."
"This book is a gold mine of valuable practical tips and techniques that would take half a career (or more) of mistakes for one to stumble upon independently."
"Good read!"
"A remarkable combination of succinct theory and insightful practice."

Best Electrical Fiber Optics

Written by a world-renowned authority of optical coatings, Thin-Film Optical Filters. , Fourth Edition presents an introduction to thin-film optical filters for both manufacturers and users. … The book is an excellent treatise of thin film coatings, explaining how to produce all sorts of different filters selected according to the function they are required to play. It is therefore quite expected that I feel free to state that, in my opinion, this book is a necessity, rather on par with having the use of a coating facility, a good coating program, and a fast computer, for anybody in the field of thin-film optical coatings and filters. Therefore, if you are new in this field, your first priority should be to make sure that you have the undivided use of a copy of this book.

"This is a good book that containes the relevant materials of thin film filters and dielectric mirrors. This book also contains design examples of filters and thin film deposition methods."
"If coatings are your thing, it is very likely that you already own this book."
"I work in a factory located in Brazil, and our business is the manufacturing of optical precision products."
"This book has got it all--practical, insightful, and well-organized."

I've also added a couple of images from the physical and the kindle edition of the book to illustrate the issue that I'm talking about."
"I teach an introductory class in electronics at a small university. However, there were some notable gaps in the Second Edition that I typically teach in an electronics class; specifically, I teach a section on transducers and microcontrollers. I've been using the Arduino for class the last couple of years because most scientists would use a microcontroller to design a piece of equipment instead of discrete gates and logic chips. The chapters are designed to be somewhat modular; for instance, I can teach the basics of analog electronics and transistors and then move to microcontrollers without necessarily having to spend a lot of time time on discrete logic chips."
