Taubes argues that the problem lies in refined carbohydrates, like white flour, easily digested starches, and sugars, and that the key to good health is the kind of calories we take in, not the number. Taubes ( Bad Science ), a writer for Science magazine, begins by showing how public health data has been misinterpreted to mark dietary fat and cholesterol as the primary causes of coronary heart disease. Taubes cites clinical evidence showing that elevated triglyceride levels, rather than high total cholesterol, are associated with increased risk of heart disease-but measuring triglycerides is more difficult than measuring cholesterol.
Reviews
Find Best Price at Amazon"He explains the mechanisms that lead to these diseases, and punches holes in the accepted wisdom behind recommended "healthy" dietary guidelines. I had recently been diagnosed with hypertension (high blood pressure) and my doctor had put me on a course of medication to bring it under control. However, the research indicated that insulin also had other effects on the body, one of which was to cause the kidneys to reabsorb more water back into the blood stream. At the same time, Taubes pointed out that blood sodium levels, which conventional wisdom claimed was the cause of that excess water (again, without a great deal of evidence to support it), was quite easily regulated by the kidneys and passed out of the body in urine. This made a lot of sense to me, and so I started a diet that the book indicated would be healthier: one without starchy food, but with fish, meat, dairy products and green vegetables. It seemed that the combination of the diet and my hypertension medication was giving me low blood pressure and dehydration symptoms. Taubes' studies had indicated that HDL levels had a strong inverse correlation with coronary heart disease incidence (that is, the higher the HDL levels, the lower the risk of coronary heart disease), while LDL had a weak, positive correlation, so I wasn't too concerned about the increase in LDL. It might be more accurate to say that it's a book about the science of diet, nutrition and health, and Taubes is happy to acknowledge that we still need to do a lot more research on the subject, but without any preconceptions. Indeed, throughout the book, Taubes points out the lies, errors, misinterpretations and failed critical thinking that led to the current dietary recommendations of a predominantly low-fat, high-carb diet."
"In her seventies she was put on a statin for elevated cholesterol and became someone I barely recognized; argumentative, irritable, forgetful, poor coordination and very depressed. Three years ago, as my own cholesterol nudged up a bit, but still within traditional normal range, I did not hesitate to comply with my doctor's suggestion to begin a statin (Lipitor). I was strictly avoiding all saturated fats and dietary cholesterol, cooking with the supposedly "healthy" polyunsaturated oils and always choosing fat-free or low-fat dairy products. I was aware that I was having a marked increase in short term memory problems, and my joints were getting so troublesome I was unwilling to do the exercise my doctor kept harping about to keep my weight under control. Then the came the real shocker.......the most consistent risk factor for developing heart disease, as far as diet is concerned, is the intake of carbohydrates. For those interested, here are some recommendations: Natural Health & Weight Loss,Deep Nutrition: Why Your Genes Need Traditional Food,The Statin Damage Crisis,The Modern Nutritional Diseases: And How to Prevent Them : Heart Disease, Stroke, Type-2 Diabetes, Obesity, Cancer,Cereal Killer,The Great Cholesterol Con: The Truth About What Really Causes Heart Disease and How to Avoid It and The Primal Blueprint: Reprogram your genes for effortless weight loss, vibrant health, and boundless energy Four of these are written by MDs - informed, well educated, science background people working with current research information. Information I uncovered left me shocked about how manipulative Big Pharma is as far as pressuring doctors to use their drugs, (complete with "incentive" packages that can only be compared to flat out bribery) about how they fund their own studies and then get to interpret their own results to be sure they are favorable, and/or they can choose to fail to publish anything negative. The power the pharmaceutical industry and the agribusiness has on such supposedly trustworthy institutions such as the American Heart Association, the FDA and the NIH is not to be believed. So sad for all of us.The food pyramid is absolutely wrong for heart health, weight management and avoiding type 2 diabetes. It is not focused on the use of statins (I found that informations in other related books listed above) - rather, he is making the point that while we have been concentrating on fats as the cause of obesity, diabetes and heart disease, it has really been the shift toward more carbohydrate and seed oil consumption for the last 60 years. I will not know my lab numbers for several months until my next check up, but I can report that my body aches have lessened, I have more energy, my short-term memory is better and my depressed mood has vanished. I bought two extra copies of Taubes book and will be giving them to both my Family Practice doctor and my Endocrinologist."

Already, a simple surgical checklist from the World Health Organization designed by following the ideas described here has been adopted in more than twenty countries as a standard for care and has been heralded as “the biggest clinical invention in thirty years” ( The Independent ). “I read The Checklist Manifesto in one sitting yesterday, which is an amazing tribute to the book that Gawande has crafted. “Few medical writers working today can transmit the gore-drenched terror of an operation that suddenly goes wrong--a terror that has a special resonance when it is Dr. Gawande himself who makes the initial horrifying mistake. Thoughtfully written and soundly defended, this book calls for medical professionals to improve patient care by adopting a basic, common-sense approach.” ― The Washington Post. “ The Checklist Manifesto is beautifully written, engaging, and convincingly makes the case for adopting checklists in medicine, a project to which Gawande has devoted significant time over the last several years. It is in many ways the most personal of his books, a direct call to action to change the way health care is delivered through straightforward and simple, yet proven, means. Fascinating reading.” ― New York Times Book Review. Read this book and you might find yourself making checklists for the most mundane tasks--and be better off for it.” ― BusinessWeek. “Riveting and thought-provoking.” ― The Times (UK).

The book also recommends some weightlifting gloves, which substantially reduce the strain on your hands and fingers. However, if you have the patience, the information you are after is there, and revisiting the book again after 6 weeks, I find myself more interested in the poorly organized images than before. I really wish the author had done a better job of design and production, but the content is good, so just one star deducted. UPDATE AFTER 9 MONTHS: As indicated above, I was able to hang my full body weight starting in week 2. Results: by the end of month 2, I no longer felt the chronic pain that had led me to this book in the first place. If I did not use the recommended weightlifting gloves, I would hang rarely if at all, because the hand pain would be too great."
"I didn't have a pull up bar at home so I started with hanging lightly from the door frame. The pain in my right shoulder has went from a 7 to a 2 and sometimes less. I haven't started the weights back in fear of pushing my shoulder too soon, but plan on trying in the next few weeks. What I do know is my shoulder pain is going away and I can feel/see a physical difference in my hangs."

The Curies' newly discovered element of radium makes gleaming headlines across the nation as the fresh face of beauty, and wonder drug of the medical community. Written with a sparkling voice and breakneck pace, The Radium Girls fully illuminates the inspiring young women exposed to the "wonder" substance of radium, and their awe-inspiring strength in the face of almost impossible circumstances. " Radium Girls spares us nothing of their suffering; though at times the foreshadowing reads more like a true-crime story, Moore is intent on making the reader viscerally understand the pain in which these young women were living, and through which they had to fight in order to get their problems recognized...The story of real women at the mercy of businesses who see them only as a potential risk to the bottom line is haunting precisely because of how little has changed; the glowing ghosts of the radium girls haunt us still." "This timely book celebrates the strength of a group of women, whose determination to fight improved both labor laws and scientific knowledge of radium poisoning. Written in a highly readable, narrative style, Moore's chronicle of these inspirational women's lives is sure to provoke discussion-and outrage-in book groups." "Moore's well-researched narrative is written with clarity and a sympathetic voice that brings these figures and their struggles to life...a must-read for anyone interested in American and women's history, as well as topics of law, health, and industrial safety." "Like Da a Sobel's The Glass Universe and Margot Lee Shetterly's Hidden Figures, Kate Moore's The Radium Girls tells the story of a cohort of women who made history by entering the workforce at the dawn of a new scientific era. Moore sheds new light on a dark chapter in American labor history; the " Radium Girls ," martyrs to an unholy alliance of commerce and science, live again in her telling" - Megan Marshall, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Margaret Fuller: A New American Life and Elizabeth Bishop: A Miracle for Breakfast.
Reviews
Find Best Price at Amazon"In The Radium Girls Kate Moore tells the story of these young women, seemingly so fortunate, who were poisoned by the jobs they felt so lucky to have. After some of the women died and more became ill the companies making large profits on radium rushed to dismiss any hint that the work was unsafe. Eventually publicity stemming from lawsuits filed by some of the victims (using their own scanty resources) focused enough attention on the problem that governments felt compelled to set safety standards and regulations. The safety regulations and restrictions which were finally put into place hardly seem adequate, and the Epilogue and Postscript giving details of the women's later lives, as well as an account of another industry that made careless use of radium as late as the 1970s, are especially harrowing."
"This is one these books that will stay with you long after you finished reading it."
"One of the best books I have read in a long time!"
"The Radium Girls is the story of these girls, most of them young, in their teens and early twenties. Because some of the girls became ill after leaving the plant, it took a long time to prove that the radium in the paint was the cause of the girls' illness. And even after it was shown that the radium was the cause, the company continued the same practice of having the girls dip the brushes into the paint and then smooth the brush tips with their mouths. They lied to their employees even after it was shown that the radium paint was to blame for the girls' illnesses and deaths, they kept secret medical records they refused to share with the families or the girls themselves, and they continued to operate as they had before, with little to no regard for the safety of the girls in their employ."
"I agree with most of the good and bad reviews: The story is fascinating and tragic, but the author's writing leaves a bit to be desired. It's not enough to simply say "corporate greed killed off a group of women in the early 20th century, leading to reform of industrial health laws"."

I first heard of the Bredesen Protocal last winter, when Maria Shriver discussed it on the Today Show. Live your life in a way that keeps your brain supplied with as many as possible of the 36 factors that influence whether APP gets cut into the destructive quartet or the beneficial duo. Several years ago, I struggled with brain fog and often had difficulty remembering numbers for even a couple of minutes. I reached a point where I thought I would die, so I wrote my will and made plans for my dogs after I was gone. I used the USDA Super Tracker to make sure that my diet exceeded the RDA for every nutrient they tracked. Long story short, I fell back into old habits, abandoned my perfect diet and exercise program, and gradually regained weight. Dr. Bredesen states in the book that his protocol may not work for frontal lobe and other types of dementias. I feel that it's still very important to heed his advice, as Alzheimers often doesn't get a definite diagnosis until after death."
"Dr. Bredeson is a rare physician that has escaped the confines of conventional medicine and explored strategies that really do radically reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s and improve those that already have the condition. Because we have a tsunami of Alzheimer’s disease approaching on and it is on track to take the lives of 45 million of the 325 million Americans alive today. He is the director of Neurodegenerative Disease Research at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Medicine, He has identified a number of molecular mechanisms at work in this disease, and has created a novel program to treat and reverse it that he calls ReCODE (Reversal of Cognitive Decline). Many are concerned about this disease and have had themselves tested for the genetic risk factor Apolipoprotein E epsilon 4 (ApoE4). His ReCode program discussed three dozen different tests that one can screen for and if they are abnormal they can be addressed to improve the synaptic balance to a more healthy level and reverse or radically reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s."
"None of the Bredesen Protocol is part of the Kaiser program, and the physicians we spoke with did not even know what a functional medicine physician is, but did not think that Kaiser had one. Fortunately, we were able to qualify for a Bredesen Immersion program with Dr. Bredesen and a team he assembled of trained functional medicine physicians in March 2017."

Find Best Price at Amazon"), I have NO CLUE what's on it, but I would imagine if you studied this book AND the workbook along with good training, you would be adequately prepared. This book has clear diagrams, tables, and charts, including what tubes are used for what tests, which is handy. Here's an idea, cut out the computer literacy part where you tell us what a printer is, and make that up by clarifying chapter one."

Besides providing the practical procedures to cleanse the liver, gallbladder, kidneys, and intestines, Moritz explains in great detail the origin of all types of common diseases and how to prevent or reverse them naturally. The book is packed with precious, time-tested approaches designed to return the body to a permanent state of balance and vitality; it includes a complete program of healthcare, which is primarily based on the ancient medical system of Ayurveda and the vast amount of experience Andreas Moritz has gained in the field of health restoration during the past 30 years.

Find Best Price at Amazon"I was put on a morphine drip, had elevated liver enzymes in my blood work, had an ultrasound scan of my abdomen, and I was diagnosed with gallstones. The doctor viewed my scan results, and said my gallbladder was about 3/4 full of gallstones, and was infected. She put me on antibiotics, recommended a ZERO fat diet, and referred me to a surgeon to remove my gallbladder ASAP. Since I had no health insurance, and no $15,000 - $20,000 lying around to pay for surgery, I found Andreas Moritz's book, and opted to at least try it. Increased immune system (I have not caught ONE cold or flu since I've been doing these flushes). The whole experience has taught me something I think everyone on the planet should know. Your local hospital, and surgeons do not make money off of selling you Epsom salts, grapefruits, and olive oil. Homeopathic remedies are not profitable for them, so they will not recommend these alternative treatments, no matter how successful they are. Pooping for an entire day is not how I would prefer to spend a Sunday, but once again, it's BETTER THAN REMOVING AN ORGAN YOUR BODY NEEDS, AND CAN REPAIR WITH THE HELP OF THIS FLUSH!!! I have also done a lot of research, and feel that eating organic, and growing my own vegetables is the best idea. I avoid anything grown with pesticides, or vegetables that have been genetically modified by shady corporations. I have never felt better in my entire life, and look forward to the day I go back to the radiologist, and get a scan of my gallbladder, so I can wave it in that ER doctor's face, and ask her if she still thinks I should have surgery?!?!?! Pay a ton of money for surgery & expensive RX medications. Or you can buy this book, some Epsom salts, grapefruits, and olive oil."
"My doctor told me the ONLY way to remove this gallstone was by having my gallbladder removed. My boyfriend and I researched natural ways of removing gallstones from the gallbladder and he found a book titled "The Amazing Liver and Gallbladder Flush" by Andreas Mortiz."
"I live a very active lifestyle and eat pretty healthy but I cannot lose weight no matter how hard I try. I started having pain in the gallbladder area and thought that maybe I needed to research and find an alternative means to deal with it. After reading this book I felt very comfortable going forward with the flush and decided that no matter what it would be beneficial to my health. I continued to pass them all morning and at one point the entire water top in the toilet was 3/4 full of them."

"I can personally attest to the remarkable advances that have been made, as I was author of the chapter on eosinophilic gastroenteritis in the second edition of the textbook, and reading the same chapter in the tenth edition underscores the important advances that have been made in our understanding of the molecular basis as well as the pathophysiology of this and related disorders." The Hot Zone tells this dramatic story, giving a hair-raising account of the appearance of rare and lethal viruses and their "crashes" into the human race. Preston's account of an outbreak of a strain of the Ebola virus among monkeys in a Virginia laboratory has spent more than 30 weeks on PW's bestseller list.

Find Best Price at Amazon"I'm writing this review now because, 1- the current (July 2014) outbreak of Ebola is "the deadliest in recorded history," and 2- I've NEVER forgotten the book. The thing that is so terrifying is the way the poor people who contract the disease die."
"I learned a lot about the virus. After reading this book, im able to read between the headlines of what is being said and more importantly, what's NOT being said. Medical researchers working with the virus give share their information."
"I bought this book in its hard-cover version when it first came out, quite a few years ago, and what with the recent Ebola crisis in Africa and now in the news here in the U.S., I wanted to re-read it. I am dismayed that the CDC is still "learning" how to contain this disease, when the knowledge has been in use by the U.S. Army, and various charitable organizations in Africa for many years."
"A scary, eye opening book about Ebola. He describes in detail the Ebola Reston outbreak in Maryland."
"A must read for anyone who wants the scientific truth about this disease, how it can be spread & how easily & quickly it can mutate."
"Although twenty years old, the information is timely and so. pertinent for our age when Ebola is devastating Africa and may be advancing thought the world."
"Because you will be terrified every time you have a tiny headache. Because you will want strangers to stay far away from you, especially if they are breathing. Because you will realise that your government, our government, the government will probably be unable to stop a proper Ebola virus. Because you will forgive the sometimes over detailed writing because you are completely absorbed in the horror. Because this is not fiction, this is real, this is here, this is now. And this is a gripping, interesting, well put together, well researched non-fiction book that reads like an adventure, a horror and a thriller all at once. Viruses are clever little buggers and best we be afraid."

Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy is an essential pregnancy resource for parents-to-be. The volume actually provides much more information than most parents will need: week by week accounts of the babys development, entries on how pregnancy can be affected by dozens of previous health conditions (such as HIV and diabetes), self-care tips for side effects like nausea and back pain, sidebars that explain the difference between identical and fraternal twins, etc.

Find Best Price at Amazon"I found everything spot-on (I'm now entering my 7th month of pregnancy), and it helped me to know what to expect with each ob appointment, what questions I should ask, and when to start planning for things such as interviewing pediatricians, filling out hospital forms, etc (each of these are included as reminders for each month of pregnancy, so it's not like you're bombarded by information up front that you'll have to remember throughout all 9 and 1/2 months of pregnancy). For example: ob doctors often frighten women away from all forms of vitamin A because of one study that was done in the 1990s, but vitamin A as beta carotene hasn't been shown to cause birth defects like vitamin A in the form of retinol has, which is stored in fat cells, and vitamin A as beta carotene is necessary for fetal eye development (this is based on newer data I've found through my research). I had to argue with my ob about this when I told her I wouldn't take prescription prenatals and preferred my own vitamin mix - well, it was for many reasons, including the synthetic junk and dyes in most prescription prenatals (boy, I've got some stories about pharmaceutical reps pushing those things and their reasons why they include dyes in them that have been linked to birth defects, one of which included an old man making the statement that "pregnant women don't want to take ugly brown pills; they want to take pretty blue ones!""
"My daughter reads the book daily and is impressed with the references and information that is explained in simple language."
"This book provides good overview information about the entire pregnancy, childbirth, and the first few weeks after childbirth."
"This book is perfect for first-time parents who are interested in no-nonsense information."
"This is going to be a book that I will give away as an early baby gift."
"When me and my husband decided to start getting ready for a baby I was worried and I wanted to do everything I could for reaserch so I would have the least amount of trouble during my pregnancy."
"Every time I wanted to look for a chart, I would search (unsuccessfully) through the entire index and then give up and page through the entire book to find what I was looking for."
