Best Rachmaninoff
Just as Serge Rachmaninoff's piano virtuosity ranked him among the greatest pianists of the twentieth century, his compositions for piano and orchestra won him an important position among modern composers. 1 in the years 1890–91, while he was still a young student at the Moscow Conservatory, and revised it nearly three decades later in 1917, when he began to devote his life mainly to his international career as a piano virtuoso.

"Love Dover Publications."
"Rachmaninoff is one of the truly great romantic composers, and I have purchased all of the scores for enjoyment."
"A must have for fans of the Rachmaninoff piano concertos... cheap in price while well printed and bound - it's a great addition to any music library collection!"
"His writing this while still a student in the Moscow conservatory is just a preview of what a notable pianist and composer he would become."
"The score of the First Concerto is basically the revised version, except there are occasional passages where the piano writing is something other than what you will find in any two-piano score."
"Structurally, it seems to be identical to the revised version, but much of the piano figuration (I'm unsure about the orchestral part) is based on the original version."
When Bertensson and Leyda’s 1956 biography appeared, it lifted the veil of secrecy from several areas of Rachmaninoff’s life, especially concerning the genesis of his compositions and how their critical reception affected him. Even with the availabilty of such sources and full access to the Rachmaninoff Archive at the Library of Congress, Bertensson, Leyda, and were tireless in their pursuit of privately held documents, particularly correspondence. Sergei Bertensson, who knew Rachmaninoff, published works on music and film, often with a documentary emphasis.

"complete. Well Written. a Must."
"It's a terrific and complete volume of Rachmanoff's life!"
"Got it for my pianist friend and he loves it."
"It comprises some commentary by Bertensson and Leyda (they act as interlocutors of a sort), but, more importantly, it is a series of lengthy excerpts from letters by Rachmaninoff, family, friends, music critics and newspapers; carefully arranged with commentary by time and place to give an in depth and candid overview of the life of this composer, pianist and conductor. In 1919, after. a performance, a typically snotty Boston critic challenged Rachmaninoff whether real genius was compatible with popularity. Rachmaninoff was an impresario pianist, familiar with and expert in the playing his compositions and the works of Beethoven, Liszt and Chopin. Tchaikovsky was his mentor; Tolstoy, one who counseled him early in his life; Chaliapin, Rimsky Korsakov and Horwitz, close friends; Koussevitzky, his agent and intermediary in the United States and Europe; and Ormandy, the most trusted conductor of his favorite symphonies."
"For example, in one early letter Rachmaninoff mentions, with great determination, that he was going to get married but we never learn anything more about that; the numerous mental states he refers to are almost always left hanging in the air. Although the book is ogranised in a chronological way, the continuity of the narrative (if that is the word) is often disrupted, and even the current year printed in the upper part of every page doesn't help the matter. In addition to the basic events in his life, clumsily related in between, the numerous excerpts from letters present a vivid picture of Rachmaninoff's mind and its development through the years, even if one is left to draw all conclusions alone. The new edition (2000) comes with an interesting, if a little too long, introduction by David Butler Cannata in which he explores in great detail the history of the volume, first published in 1956 as the first full-scale biography, at least an attempt for such, of Rachmaninoff in English. Apart from some perceptive touches as regards to Rachmaninoff's mystical mentality, it tells next to nothing about his works and significance as a composer, his careers as a pianist and conductor, or his recording legacy. Since 1956 a number of studies on all these subjects have appeared, and it is safe to say that the comprehensive ones by Max Harrison and Barrie Martyn completely supersede the semi-amateurish attempt of Sergei Bertensson and Jay Leyda."
"My reply to that is there are many sources and references on Rachmaninoff's music but this book, unlike any other, is about the life of Rachmaninoff."
"It's informative and revealing but terribly dry and doesn't afford the reader much of an insight into his world of creativity and inspiration."

"I am a proficient sight-reader so playing one of these from start to end prove to end in under 45 minutes, but having the counterpoint as similar in Bach's music and polyrhythm from say, Debussy - it is a skill and showcase of the difficulty to master the dynamics of one of these preludes (as is with any other piece) but even more so with Rachmaninoff."

In Italy, castration for singing was understood through the lens of Catholic blood sacrifice as expressed in idioms of offering and renunciation and, paradoxically, in satire, verbal abuse, and even the symbolism of the castrato’s comic cousin Pulcinella. "Working in from the broadest anthropological reflections to the most minute points of physiology and endocrinology—by way of musical and social history, the theory and practice of singing, the insights of three centuries’ worth of philosophers and psychologists, all illustrated with the rarest pictures and recordings— The Castrato is a scholarly and literary feast."

"This book is absolutely amazing, a must have for any music library."
"This is the best music theory book ever written....It is a little dry but it contains everything you will ever need to know about harmony."
"If you take the time to study it properly and reread any sections that seem a bit hazy, it will take you a while to get through it, but your understanding of music and harmony will be incredibly profound. If you want a hardcore study, and want to come to understand things about sound and harmony you would never even guess at; if you want to learn to write music (and not just throw chords together because they sound great) with purpose; if you yearn to understand WHY that one song sounds so incredible, and to learn how to evoke emotions through similar progressions and melody, this is the book for you, and it is worth many times the amount of money requested here."
"I have been writing 4 part harmony exercises as directed by ASchoenberg in this book. Writing out one's own harmony exercises according to Arnold's instructions is KEY, I believe, to getting the real value out of the book. I play jazz piano, in addition to sight read through Bach (currently pieces from his French Suites)."
"The fact that he never read a book on the subject of harmony or even music history might mark him as an ignoramus, but he does admit to looking through several textbooks. He defends the issue of the possibility of a 7th that resolves by rising upwards but fails to show the classic example of it in the opening allegro of the Op. The chapter on rhythm is incorrect because bar lines are necessary to understanding that weak progressions are not to be written over them especially in chorales unless his majesty would like to quibble about that."

"This is a very useful set of libretti and translations."
"I bought the book to have a handy libretto and was pleasantly surprised with the wonderful introductory material."
"First, the translation, which takes up three quarters of the book, is well done, with German and English directly compared on a line by line basis, complete with alternate or discarded or rejected versions of the libretto included in an appendix."
"In his introductory note on the text and his translation, Stewart Spencer writes: "Whether or not there is any truth in the anecdote that Wieland Wagner used to insist that his singers translate the text of the Ring into German before beginning work on the stage production, the story has a certain poetic truth to it.""
"The introductory materials and commentary are useful to whatever extent the reader wants those things (apparently some reviewers here don't), but I'd guess most buy this book for the excellent English translation of the librettos. I've started the slow, tedious process of going through and placing bookmarks at each chapter start and on other important pages, but this is a very cumbersome solution, as you can't even edit the bookmarks into brief descriptive titles or organize them into an outline format. But honestly, I give the Kindle edition NO stars....it's the worst Kindle book I've ever purchased and I'd strongly urge others to avoid it until the publisher releases a restructured version."

"The revision by R. Strauss added a lot of technical in-depth, that today remains current."
"Not realizing how widely the invention would be disseminated, Berlioz devotes less than half a page to the subject. He offers comparable space to a couple of Adolph Sax's other inventions--the saxtrombas and the saxtubas--which most of us have never even heard of. There was also an instrument called the octobass, which was like a contrabass, but with three strings tuned to G, D, and A. Oh well, it's always nice to learn a little music history. If you ever heard the piece, you will surely agree that only a roar results, no matter how accurately the drums are tuned."
"This is perfect for someone who wants to see, know, and understand how the various instruments of an orchestra work: their ranges, characteristics, abilities...it gives many many examples from various compositions from various composers: Wagner, Berlioz, Beethoven, Gluck, Weber, Mozart... "He is so taken with these "Mini Guides" that each and every one of his twenty-eight five-star reviews begins, "The Opera Journeys Mini Guide Series is just wonderful; it's like a "Cliff Note" [sic] of the opera, and extremely informative and educational." Then, go out to see the opera. Older performances of operas that in many cases can only be described as superb can be found on CD right here at Amazon for about the price of this pamphlet."
"I congratulate Burton Fisher for a job very well done and Amazon for making these handy, information-laden booklets available.
