“Incredibly rich with wisdom and insight that will leave the reader, whether single or married, feeling uplifted.” — The Washington Times Based on the acclaimed sermon series by New York Times bestselling author Timothy Keller, this book shows everyone—Christians, skeptics, singles, longtime married couples, and those about to be engaged—the vision of what marriage should be according to the Bible. He is the author of The Songs of Jesus , Prayer , Encounters with Jesus , Walking with God Through Pain and Suffering , and Every Good Endeavor , among others, including the perennial bestsellers The Reason for God and The Prodigal God . Kathy and Tim then moved to Virginia, where Tim started at his first church, West Hopewell Presbyterian Church, and their three sons were born.

Find Best Price at Amazon"This book had its roots in the early 1990's when he did a series of sermons on marriage because of the skepticism, fear, and arguments that many of the singles in attendance had toward marriage in the beginning stages of the church - and still do today. However, most importantly he wrote this book to give a compelling vision of what marriage was designed to look like from the Bible from Genesis to Revelation - from the first marriage of Adam and Eve to the last marriage of Christ and the Church. I believe that Keller succeeds in giving a very compelling case for marriage from the three stands above - from his experience, his realistic apologetic of building a case for the benefits and values of marriage, and then giving a compelling biblical vision throughout the book for the beauty of marriage when it reflects the glory of Christ at the center of it all. Some of the ambivalent views and objections to marriage Keller elaborates on and dispels in this book are as follows: "Marriage is just a piece of paper that only serves to complicate love". "Marriage was originally about property and is now in flux". "Marriage crushes individual identity and has been oppressive for women". "Marriage stifles passion and is ill-fitted to psychological reality". The Outline of Keller's book is as follows: Chapter One - A rich and deep discussion of Genesis 2 and Ephesians 5 bringing Paul's discussion into today's context and demonstrating "why the gospel helps us to understand marriage and how marriage helps us to understand the gospel." Here is a sample of some guidelines he gleans for singles in relationships before marriage: "Recognize that there are seasons for not seeking marriage." Dr. Keller knows what he's talking about and has done an outstanding job of building a great case for marriage in a culture that simply doesn't understand it and hasn't been consulting the Creator's manual and applying it in our marriages."
"There are a lot of books about dating and relationships out there (the more of which you've probably read, the older you are), but not a lot of them are focused on what it is you're aiming at: the marriage relationship. I've had the good fortune to grow up in a family with several long-term, healthy marriages (parents 34 years, two sets of aunts and uncles nearly 50 years, grandparents more than 70 years and still going), so a lot of what Keller says about the nature of marriage made intuitive sense, but I can't remember the last time I heard someone articulate it so clearly. This perspective dovetails very well with John Van Epp's advice in "How to Avoid Marrying a Jerk - The Foolproof Way to Follow Your Heart Without Losing Your Mind)," about the variety of settings in which one should get to know a potential partner."
"You will receive many pointers and guides on how to treat your potential spouse and ensure a long and loving relationship with them."
"NYC Manhattan Pastor Keller with Kathy, his wife, offer a biblical context for marriage and guidance from each."
"Having read several marriage books and taught on the subject of marriage, one wonders what can God reveal though another perspective on marriage?"

Defining morality in terms of human and animal well-being, Harris argues that science can do more than tell how we are; it can, in principle, tell us how we ought to be. Philosophers of mind have already discovered that they can't duck the study of neuroscience, and the best of them have raised their game as a result. Sam Harris shows that the same should be true of moral philosophers, and it will turn their world exhilaratingly upside down. As for religion, and the preposterous idea that we need God to be good, nobody wields a sharper bayonet than Sam Harris. If there are more and less effective ways for us to seek happiness and to avoid misery in this world—and there clearly are—then there are right and wrong answers to questions of morality. If we could eliminate war, nuclear proliferation, malaria, chronic hunger, child abuse, etc.—these changes would be good, on balance, for everyone. There are surely neurobiological, psychological, and sociological reasons why this is so—which is to say that science could potentially tell us exactly why a phenomenon like child abuse diminishes human well-being. I think it is important for us to admit that this is not a claim about our personal preferences, or merely something our culture has conditioned us to believe. Moral truths of this kind must find their place in any scientific understanding of human experience. It is safe to say that the optimal response to this dire situation—that is to say, the most moral response—is not to throw battery acid in the faces of little girls for the crime of learning to read. They believe that they will enjoy an eternity of happiness after death by following the strictest interpretation of Islamic law here on earth. Harris: This is the phrase I use to describe the space of all possible experience—where the peaks correspond to the heights of well-being and valleys represent the worst possible suffering. Given that our experience is fully constrained by the laws of the universe, there must be scientific answers to the question of how best to move upwards, toward greater happiness. So scientists fear that answers to specific questions about human well-being may be very difficult to come by, and confidence on many points is surely premature. Anyone who thinks that gay marriage is the greatest problem of the 21st century, or that women should be forced to live in burqas, is not worth listening to on the subject of morality. Religious ideas about good and evil tend to focus on how to achieve well-being in the next life, and this makes them terrible guides to securing it in this one. You do not need to believe that the Bible was dictated by the Creator of the Universe, or that Jesus Christ was his son, to see the wisdom and utility of following the Golden Rule. The problem with religious morality is that it often causes people to care about the wrong things, leading them to make choices that needlessly perpetuate human suffering. Even the faithful can’t really get their deepest moral principles from religion—because books like the Bible and the Qur’an are full of barbaric injunctions that all decent and sane people must now reinterpret or ignore. You don’t get this moral insight from scripture, because the God of Abraham expects us to keep slaves. Q: How will admitting that there are right and wrong answers to issues of human and animal flourishing transform the way we think and talk about morality? Harris: What I’ve tried to do in my book is give a framework in which we can think about human values in universal terms. Therefore, we have divorced the most important questions in human life from the context in which our most rigorous and intellectually honest thinking gets done. Moral truth entirely depends on actual and potential changes in the well-being of conscious creatures. It seems to me that the only way we are going to build a global civilization based on shared values—allowing us to converge on the same political, economic, and environmental goals—is to admit that questions about right and wrong and good and evil have answers, in the same way the questions about human health do.

Before dismissing "Radical" based on nothing more than the plausibility of a negative review, I encourage you to use Amazon's "look inside" feature or read the first chapter, available free on-line [Google "Someone Worth Losing Everything For"]. - David Platt". BOOK SUMMARY. David Platt's book "Radical" reflects a wider move of God through which He is stirring His people to live radically for Him to finish discipling all nations (Mt. "Radical" overlaps heavily with Francis Chan's Crazy Love: Overwhelmed by a Relentless God in urging God's people to live "all out" for Jesus, but puts forth a much clearer picture of the global purposes which God is working to accomplish through His people, and a more practical suggestion for how God's people can begin intentionally engaging together in obeying God and impacting His world. From the one out of eight reviews of "Radical" which are negative, it is apparent that: - some will read "Radical" as a guilt trip or an appeal for wealth distribution, - others will question Dr. Platt's motives, lifestyle or position, and. - those who love money will mock the idea of living sacrificially as the Pharisees did. Extracted from the caring tone of Platt's audio presentations, some will experience the book as a guilt trip. While Dr. Platt effectively develops God's intention for those He has blessed to join Him in caring for the poor, inexperienced Western Christians far too often translate this simplistically as "giving to the poor." Unfortunately the current edition of "Radical" does nothing to address this problem (a later edit may), but to his credit Dr. Platt asks that all of his small group leaders read Fikkert and Corbett's When Helping Hurts: Alleviating Poverty Without Hurting the Poor. - Most real friends of the True King will find value in "Radical" and want to share it with others. Google "Mission Frontiers Radical not about me"]. "Radical" is NOT likely to be appreciated by those who. - are prone to feelings of guilt, - want to justify their attachment to the things of this world, or. - are not prepared to give their lives to drawing close to Jesus and joining Him in His global purpose. ---. Today, 11/7/2010, I have moved the following items to a comment under today's date: - my own transformation of perspective toward "Radical,". - how God is using "Radical" like He has used "Crazy Love,". - my unusual involvement in promoting "Radical," and. - related free resources to help you live radically for our King."
"We are a Christian family, and about six months ago I began questioning the fruits of our lives...comfort, things, big house, and the list goes on."
"Other books after this are repetitive and seem biased toward his denominational and personal ideologies, but these two books - "Radical" and "Radical Together" are excellent."
"Understands that its through faith in Jesus, and His Finished Work on the Cross, that we are saved, and in Gods Grace we will be changed into the image of His Son Jesus."

"The first time I was able to put the knowledge I learned from this book into practice was a emotionally explosive moment as I realized that I finally was able to control my thoughts and take a hold of my mind."
"The most shocking thing you'll notice if you open A Course In Miracles is the deceivingly pretentious introduction that never fails to spark intrigue. It takes browsing a few pages to realize that actually, it is required, because it is the only spiritual message there is. It is the same message we hear from anyone that has ever grown into spiritual high levels and tried to tell us how to join them. BUT, to my surprise, and unlike the stories I heard in both, catholic-elementary AND catholic-high-school (such was my luck) --- this book interprets things correctly. You do the right thing, but you do not take revenge because the results of the actions of s/he, whom you perceive as your perpetrator, are NOT up to you, but up to a higher power. Here they are: 1.- INFINITE PATIENCE DELIVERS IMMEDIATE RESULTS. The first time I read this one I laughed. I needed to open a new bank account, and I knew these things take forever. When the bank representative asked for the usual documents and apologized for the computer being slow, I took it as a sign. Stepping into the present with an open heart (as you would if you really wanted it to work), gives you an advantage... You are operating from infinity. 2.- A MIRACLE IS A SHIFT IN PERCEPTION. The power of an alchemist lies not in turning dust into gold. That is just a metaphor to show the strength of the mind that lies behind such a miracle. A real miracle is one that happens when in spite of desperation, hurt, defeat, bankruptcy, we still shift our perception from lack, to abundance. We have our feet on the ground, we know where we are, but we also trust the infinite force that is keeping us alive right now, and we know we are abundant, in this moment, because we are here. The stuff of alchemists... 3.- I DON'T PERCEIVE MY OWN BEST INTERESTS. This one blew my mind right of its skull. There is a story of that enlightened monk who, one night, gets a visit from the parents of the teen-age girl that lives next door. A year later the parents come back and apologize, they tell him their daughter confessed that the child was fathered by the butcher. Check out the next two lines... "The course does not aim at teaching the meaning of love, for that is beyond what can be taught. It does aim, however, at removing the blocks to the awareness of love's presence, which is your natural inheritance.""

You can probably imagine how frustrated I felt when I was consistently unable to win arguments about out-there, government's coming for us-so buy some guns, conspiracy discussions. One of the foundational pieces discussed in the book is the fact that we, as humans, make decisions in the parts of our brain that aren't subject to critical thinking. The sermon on the mount was Jesus' response to the killing of his cousin John the Baptist, when jewish tradition would have called for a violent reaction to the killing of relatives by another group as if a feud had been started. The reaction of the temple crowd was in part due to references Jesus made about the land where Nazareth stood, which had been taken from the Samaritans."

In the tradition of Bertrand Russell's Why I Am Not a Christian and Sam Harris's recent bestseller, The End of Faith , Christopher Hitchens makes the ultimate case against religion. "[An] impressive and enjoyable attack on everything so many people hold dear ... Hitchens has outfoxed the Hitchens watchers by writing a serious and deeply felt book, totally consistent with his beliefs of a lifetime.

"this book sure makes you think about things.I'm enjoying it but not finished it yet.Wish more people could get out of the box and say ,now that makes sense."
"I learned something on every page - never knew much about how religion started, but Mr. Hitchens certainly changed that."
"This is the first book I have written by the late Christopher Hitchens and I know I'll read more."
"This is a must reference book for Pro and Anti Religion."
"Firstly, I want to say that Christopher Hitchens was already on my "favorites" list (an idea at which I'm sure he would have scoffed) because I've known about him and listened to many recorded debates in which he participated. Hitchens writes in such a manner that one can easily envision him on a stage with a microphone lecturing in his dry, acerbic style with all the wit and sarcasm that his subject(s) deserve. As one of the most prevalent "arguments" from the theist's point of view seems to be that so much good has been done through and by religion, Hitchens is at his best in diffusing and disproving this oft-repeated nonsense using reason, logic, erudition and wit. But the man's command of the language and his ability to transfer his thinking and wit to the printed word is, in itself, astounding."
"It's not easy reading, but there are great points that I've not considered before."
"This book is absolutely brilliant."

The lack of practical tips left me disappointed, but overall I thought the message of the book was very helpful. The survey results are undeniable and help me understand the importance of respect in a marriage. My 30-day action plan: 1) Always accept his opinion and judgement on a matter and only offer my opinion if asked. 2) Initiate casual physical connections at least once a day (ie: rubbing shoulders, sitting next to on couch, etc.). I am hopeful that by acting more respectful that he will in turn actively seek out my opinion so we have an equal relationship. I already thank him on a regular basis for important little things that he does to help with our child and around the house. I have found that if I carefully listen to what he has to say, acknowledge what he has said, and then offer my two-cents - he is much more open to my opinion. 2) I often forgot to initiate casual physical connections until the very end of the day. It made me realize how much our relationship has changed from our early courtship to now being parents of a toddler. Although I was not successful at carrying out each action step - it did open my eyes in a big way. I plan on talking to my DH at some point about the book, but I am waiting until we are on more solid ground."

"If only women realized how visual men are - maybe they would stop walking around town in yoga pants."
"I've recommended this book to many women and I've even recommended the men's companion book to some guy friends."
"I really loved this book... at times it was a little challenging reading things I didn't realize he thought or felt..or maybe that I could have made him feel... this book has helped my marriage... it has helped me to better understand him and his needs or wants.. definitely worth a read or a second read!"

He blends his own research findings with those of anthropologists, historians, and other psychologists to draw a map of the moral domain, and he explains why conservatives can navigate that map more skillfully than can liberals. In a stunning final chapter on ideology and civility, Haidt shows what each side is right about, and why we need the insights of liberals, conservatives, and libertarians to flourish as a nation. “Jonathan Haidt is one of smartest and most creative psychologists alive, and his newest book, The Righteous Mind, is a tour de force—a brave, brilliant and eloquent exploration of the most important issues of our time. This penetrating yet accessible book will help readers understand the righteous minds that inhabit politics.” —Larry Sabato, University of Virginia, author of A More Perfect Constitution “A remarkable and original synthesis of social psychology, political analysis, and moral reasoning that reflects the best of sciences in these fields and adds evidence that we are innately capable of the decency and righteousness needed for societies to survive.” —Edward O. Wilson, University Research Professor Emeritus, Harvard University. “Haidt’s a good thing.” – The Atlantic online. “A well-informed tour of contemporary moral psychology…A cogent rendering of a moral universe of fertile complexity and latent flexibility.” – Kirkus. “[Haidt’s] framework for the different moral universes of liberals and conservatives struck me as a brilliant breakthrough… The Righteous Mind provides an invaluable road map.” –Miller-McCune.com. “A much-needed voice of moral sanity.” – Booklist "An important and timely book…His ideas are controversial but they make you think…Haidt has made his reputation as a social psychologist at the University of Virginia, where he and his colleagues explore reason and intuition, why people disagree so passionately and how the moral mind works." The book is beautifully written, and it is truly unusual to encounter a book that makes a major theoretical contribution yet encourages one to turn its pages enthusiastically.” —Christopher Boehm, University of Southern California, author of Moral Origins.

If you want to sway someones opinion, Haidt suggests, you must first appeal to their elephant (the emotional part of their brain or "why they feel the way they do"). I only wish everyone could read this book, understand their natural decision making process and be aware of what's happening to them when they have disagreements or strong opinions on a subject."
"This book was stressful for me to read because I really wanted to keep not liking the people I don't agree with."
"I lean toward "liberal" idealogies, but this book made me realize the value of a more diverse perspective for the survival of the human race and how my anti-religious viewpoints had incorporated "sacred" elements of their own."
"When we use the author's model to understand apparently bizarre, contradictory or self destructive behavior by someone whose political, religious or philosophical views are very different from our own, we can often discover that that individual is not necessarily psychotic, unintelligent or otherwise mentally disabled - at least no more than the rest of us."
"One of the best books I've read."
"It's an unusually readable academic product of mind-Opening scholarship and, I found, accurate analysis."
"This is worth reading."

Lewis, the most important writer of the 20th century, explores the common ground upon which all of those of Christian faith stand together. The volume on the Blackstone edition is recorded at a higher level than HarperAudio's. Whether or not one agrees with Lewis's arguments, it is a pleasure to hear such a skillful reading of an eloquent work.

As you work through this great book take some time to digest the material in each chapter and reflect upon the material that Lewis covers and the thoroughness of his argument and perspectives."
"He expertly (and extensively) uses metaphor to help mere humans understand the incomprehensible facts about God. Lewis's explanation of Christian doctrine from the ground up helps the Christian fill in the blank parts of their theological understanding."
"This book is a very interesting read for Christians, regardless of your religious background."
"Rereading it now I see that this is still an excellent and relevant book for those who are exploring, or new to, following Christ today."
"His insight cuts right to the core of the matter, and he is able to share his insights in a simple and accessible style. He presents a rational argument for his belief in Christianity, and while it may not convert the most stalwart atheists, I do believe it would help them to understand the fundamental belief system shared by most mainstream Christian denominations."
"This book has helped me tremendously on my journey."
"A must read."
"Mere Christianity is a GREAT book, but DO NOT BUY THIS VERSION."
