"Inside you will find teaching strategies that will help you hold your student accountable. The text comes with a CD that has video clips of people implementing the strategies. Best book I have read as a teacher to increase my repertoire of "positive" strategies for guiding my students in their education."
"This is a great book for all teachers, new and old alike, and I wouldn't say that about many books in education."
"Doug Lemov's book is a useful tool for teachers starting out in the profession or for teachers to hone in on their classroom management techniques. Lemov explains several techniques in great detail that are seemingly aimed at running a classroom efficiently, and consequently, improve student test scores. His book is a very practical guide to trying out new things in your classroom, and that's why I think this book would be a great resource for beginning teachers. I think experience is a great teacher, but when trying to help others improve their practice, I also think it's helpful to back up suggestions with some research here and there. Some of Lemov's techniques went against what I learned and know about child development and teaching speakers of other languages."
"This book is an excellent source of practical teaching methods and attitudes."
"This book is amazing."

How does Finnish education―with short school days, light homework loads, and little standardized testing―produce students who match the PISA scores of high-powered, stressed-out kids in Asia? Remarkably, Finland is prioritizing the joy of learning in its newest core curricula and Walker carefully highlights specific strategies that support joyful K-12 classrooms and integrate seamlessly with educational standards in the United States. “[Walker] provides an engaging and eye-opening vision that does not pit America against Finland, but lets us see what we can learn from each other... For teachers and education advocates who would like to understand one instructor's reflective quest toward educational improvement.”. - Library Journal. “Walker was nevertheless able to identify 33 strategies that could be easily introduced into American educational systems… [Walker’s ideas] are geared toward the relaxed, flexible, welcoming atmosphere that works so well for both teachers and students in Finland. “More joy in classrooms and less work for teachers as the way to improving student learning? Sounds incredible, but the Finns have figured it out, and Tim Walker explains how American educators can do the same in this engaging and important book. “Tim Walker is one of the most thoughtful educators I've ever encountered. His observations as an American teacher working in Finnish classrooms will surprise many readers: Some traditional ideas we've pushed aside actually work well in Finland, some of Finland's most effective strategies originated in American schools.

I can't wait for next week when I allow my kids more freedom in their research projects and having their help in planning our Force and Motion unit."
"Had some great, simple ideas."
"Simple and easy strategies that can be reflected on and adapted for the classroom no matter what area you teach."
"Changed my approach to workflow so I have less stress, but could use another edit due to typos and repetitiibs."
"His strategies talk not only about teaching but the things we should be doing outside of teaching to help us become better teachers."
"The 33 simple strategies (basic reminders; many are adapted from Lemov’s Teach Like a Champion) are pedagogically solid, activities we should be doing in order to keep learning joyful: frequent breaks with fresh air and movement, gallery walks, showing relevance of lesson, choice time in which “students can select from a range of options, ten minutes of free reading, free writing, or playing a fun math game,” getting to know each child to incorporate their interests into the instruction, and many more. They “typically employ traditional, teacher-driven classroom instruction….like lecturing” and “students...typically spend a significant amount of classroom time completing exercises from workbooks” and “copying text off the blackboard (or whiteboard) into their notebooks.” Most surprisingly, they don’t “take intentional, voluntary steps to improve significantly as practitioners, whether it be thorough reading professional literature of their choice, attending summer institutes, or implementing new pedagogies in their classrooms.” Ouch."
"I started following him, had to read every artical, he wrote, and wanted to learn more about Finlands education system."
"Using his life experiences in both American and Finnish schools, he provides insight into what worked for him as he learned to slow down, focus on the children and allow joy to a regular part of his day."

Best Educational Philosophy
As Tom Nichols shows in The Death of Expertise , this rejection of experts has occurred for many reasons, including the openness of the internet, the emergence of a customer satisfaction model in higher education, and the transformation of the news industry into a 24-hour entertainment machine. ”Nichols expands his 2014 article published by The Federalist with a highly researched and impassioned book that's well timed for this post-election period... strongly researched textbook for laymen will have many political and news junkies nodding their heads in agreement." ”This may sound like a rant you have heard before, but Nichols has a sense of humour and chooses his examples well. ”Excellent...makes important points and offers valuable insight, particularly when it comes to the role of the internet and social media in our political environment...essential reading for anyone interested in this pressing subject." Citizens - now so proudly ill-informed that they cannot even make use of expert opinion in fulfilling their civic role - must rediscover a sense of responsibility. ".

Find Best Price at Amazon"While many of the studies in the book have now been called into question (an excellent illustration of one of Tom Nichols' sections about when experts are wrong), I still found it fascinating how I, a person with a graduate-level degree and extensive self-education through extensive reading, knew so very little about so much. How much do we see today, though, of people without any education or training or experience, claiming that their opinion is as valid as any expert, or dismissing experts as nothing more than "elites," as if that allows them to be ignored? In a time when our entire world is built around technology and knowledge and the experts who understand them, Americans are forgetting how that all happened. The populace must understand enough to make the decisions to choose both smart experts (Knowers) and policymakers (Deciders) and understand the limits of each. But without experts and policy makers who listen, and an educated, informed populace that helps choose and respect them.....I worry for the world of my children."
"A painful, insightful yet honest bio on today's chronic illnesses when it comes to disrespecting knowledge and intelligence!"
"But shockingly absent from his analysis is the possibility that experts might be corrupt, or have their own agenda - that a scientist might deny climate change while working for the Trump Administration, or take home a fat paycheck from Coca Cola for insisting that sugar-water doesn’t make people fat. Apparently Political Science degrees now include PhD-level courses on Botany, Ecology, and Medicine – who knew?"
"There are also books that are important because they speak to urgent needs of a particular time."

"Explains why the U.S. is failing compared to the rest of the world."
"The author states learning is maximized by taking on a 1000 internships, active participation in the community, and periods of isolated reflection. Internship implies sharing information and knowledge with a potential employee, aimed at increasing their professional capability, before employment. Periods of isolated reflection allow the student to meditate on the principles and information they have learned. Abstraction, synthesis, and integration mental process allow the information to evolve into other ideas or principles. The education system values: competition, intimidation, and control more than principles of democracy. Many of the social problems of teen pregancy, drugs, and violence are associated with the rich rather than the poor. If your child thinks its ok, to spend hours down in their room listening to their music, refusing to eat at the dinner table, or participate in family activities, you start to wonder. If your child was previously curious about things and often worked on individual projects and research but suddenly stop, you wonder."
