Best Steig, William

The One and Only Shrek!: Plus 5 Other Stories
To mark the 100th birthday of William Steig and in anticipation of the next blockbuster movie Shrek the Third, Macmillan Audio presents The One and Only Shrek! “Since one of the great pleasures of Steig's books is the language he uses, it's a particular delight to have the recording of The One and Only Shrek! You can really hear that the brilliance of 'Shrek' lies in the language Steig uses...one of the most delightful moments is when Shrek accosts a peasant, who is busy 'singing and scything,' and Tucci snarls Shrek's greeting: 'You there, varlet, why so blithe?'. The ogre's extreme repulsiveness gives Steig plenty of opportunity to trot out a vile vocabulary, but one of the most delightful moments is when Shrek accosts a peasant, who is busy "singing and scything," and Tucci snarls Shrek's greeting: "You there, varlet, why so blithe?" “What better way to learn the original story of Shrek than by listening to it on this unabridged recording...Meryl Streep is her best while reading Brave Irene ...And let's not forget Mr. Tucci.
Reviews
"(not that the movie was all that profound, but still...). What I like most about Stieg are his anthropomorphic animal characters that still look realistically animal-like, but for the facial expressions, body language and clothes."
"I've never read a William Steig book I didn't like."
"I didn't know about the book until recently, so I bought it so the girls could see the correlation between the book and the movies."
"We have the audio CD as well and my kids absolutely adore it, plus my husband and I actually enjoy hearing them."
"Though we had read a number of Steig books, two of these were nice surprises."
"Stieg has a very sophisticated senses of humor and irony that somehow works for kids and adults as well, I love Dr. De Soto and Brave Irene stories."
"My 3 year old son loved the stories and would sit quietly listening until he fell asleep to the ever fabulous Meryl Streep and Stanley Tucci."
"My kids love this book, and hear the narrator voice helps bring this story to life."

Best Simmons, Dan

The Terror: A Novel
When the expedition's leader, Sir John Franklin, meets a terrible death, Captain Francis Crozier takes command and leads his surviving crewmen on a last, desperate attempt to flee south across the ice. Dan Simmons is a New York Times bestselling author whose work spans many genres, including science fiction, horror, historical fiction, and crime fiction.
Reviews
"It is clear from the start that Simmons has done his homework – such is the detail he goes to when describing both the arctic conditions and life on the expedition's two ships, Erebus and Terror. The lack of editing also shows in small details: had I received a quarter each time one of the characters said something "softly", I would have made back the price of the book a third of the way in and a tidy profit by the end of it. Even without a monstrous creature preying on the ships' crews on the endless ice, the book creates a very vivid sense of place and time."
"The characters were all enjoyable in their own way with enough detail and depth to distinguish each from the other and all representing a single spectrum in the gamut of various human emotions and responses possible in this particular circumstance: a stoic, an optimist, a pessimist, your self-centered egotist to your self-deluded madman. The final few chapters represented such a great dissonance from the preceding parts I wouldn't be surprised to learn it was unintentional and the result of something that went amiss during the editing phase of the book."
"Right from the start I was hooked."
"for the ending."
"I had never considered the obstacles and challenges arctic explorers faced in the 1850 time frame given the state of the technology then."
"Pretty excellent book, that is somehow becoming a TV show on AMC."
"No one will ever really know what happened to Franklin and his ships but Simmons wrote an interesting tale of the crews of theTerror And Erebus."
"The descriptions of the boats and their parts were difficult to picture and understand unless the reader has had sailing experience, and I personally had a very hard time with the butchering of baby bears. Yes, I understand that when you're starving, you do what you have to do...but they killed the baby to use as bait."

Brian O'Doherty of The New York Times said that Mr. Sendak's work, "disguised in fantasy, springs from his earliest self, from the vagrant child that lurks in the heart of all of us." Best Shakespeare, William

The Complete Arkangel Shakespeare: 38 Fully-Dramatized Plays
A monumental project that spanned five years and cost $3 million, '' The Complete Arkangel Shakespeare '' represents the collective vision of four people: Shakespeare scholar Tom Treadwell, film producer Bill Shepherd, BBC director Clive Brill, and composer Dominique Le Gendre. Grade 9 Up--The Complete Arkangel Shakespeare offers listeners the first-ever audio set of all 38 of William Shakespeare's plays, unabridged and fully-dramatized.
Reviews
"You can follow the play in text if you choose to -- they follow the readily available Complete Pelikan Shakespeare. But you don't need to -- if you aren't familiar with a play the brief four or five line summaries of each scene in the small fold-out accompanying each play are quite sufficient to know which characters are involved. The price -- ...-- seems high until you figure that this is 38 complete plays -- less than the cost of the same play in paperback -- and there are a total of 83 disks, so you're paying just $5 per disk."
"I have enjoyed the first seven plays, thru Hamlet, and every nuance, every word, every inflection, pause, sound, background music theme and all the audio panorama makes every minute an absolute delight."
"I have studied, listened to, and viewed Shakespeare's plays in all available formats for thirty years and I am thoroughly pleased with the Archangel Complete Shakespeare audio."
"As other reviewers have noted, the price works out to a bargain and is worth digging into your pockets for."
"I first read about it in Rafe Esquith's books on teaching Shakespeare to kids and after doing my research realized what a treasure this was. I strongly recommend reading Marjorie Garber's "Shakespeare After All" because it'll give you additional tools to appreciate the play."
"These are excellent audio productions of all the Shakespeare plays. Again, the actual audio program is always correct and wonderful, but I spent a looong time correcting track numbers and titles in the mp3 rips so things would work right on my portable sport player."
"Unless you're very familiar with the plays, they can be hard to follow in that there's no introduction of characters."

After an uneventful experiment in his garage-lab, a lightning storm and flash of electricity bring Frank’s inventions—the robots Klink and Klank—to life! Not exactly the ideal lab partners, the wisecracking Klink and the overly expressive Klank nonetheless help Frank attempt to perfect his Antimatter Motor . “Jon Scieszka’s new series has the winning ingredients that link his clever brilliance in story telling with his knowledge of real science, while at the same time the combination of fiction and nonfiction appeals to the full range of the market.” —Jack Gantos, Dead End in Norvelt. When Frank designs an antimatter motor flying bike to submit for Midville's Science Prize, his idea is stolen—along with Klink and Klank—by his rival, T. Edison, and Edison's sidekick, Mr. Chimp, an actual chimp who communicates through sign language.
