Best Teen & Young Adult Biography Comics
A welcome read for anyone who ever felt more passion for a sandwich than is strictly speaking proper, Relish is a graphic novel for our time: it invites the reader to celebrate food as a connection to our bodies and a connection to the earth, rather than an enemy, a compulsion, or a consumer product. Loosely connected chapters chart a child- and young adulthood surrounded by cooks and bakers, bouncing between Manhattan kitchens and upstate farmhouses, and through art school and the booming culinary scene in Chicago.

The way she describes each food item will make your mouth water, never have I craved a good croissant so much! Anyway, this is not an action packed spiderman type book, this is not a batman comic, it's a thought out, elegant graphic novel about a girls life through food, suitable for reading with your preteens, as a gift for teenagers, or any adult you know that likes food and art."
"Told in chapters titled with her favorite food dishes, Lucy talks about her first delicious bites of each dish as well as some of her later life experiences. Overall, I think people interested in food will enjoy this book, but as a stand-alone biography, probably not."
"Packed with recipes and lovely drawings of kitchen life, it's bound to make foodies proud and newbies ready to roll up their sleeves and explore - or order Blue Apron."
"Knisley finds a kind of sweet depth in life that invites thoughtfulness, and the cherishing of life."
"With all that said, it IS the author/illustrator's story, so she should tell it like it is--it is just hard for teachers and parents to classify it."
"I really enjoyed Relish - Lucy Knisley's artwork is crisp and colorful as always, and her stories of travel are, as usual, wonderfully drawn."
"This won't be to everyone's taste, but it is an interesting book presented as a graphic novel."
"This book was a great disappointment."
2 Spinning
Ignatz Award winner Tillie Walden’s powerful graphic memoir Spinning captures what it’s like to come of age, come out, and come to terms with leaving behind everything you used to know. She woke before dawn for morning lessons, went straight to group practice after school, and spent weekends competing at ice rinks across the state. But as she switched schools, got into art, and fell in love with her first girlfriend, she began to question how the close-minded world of figure skating fit in with the rest of her life, and whether all the work was worth it given the reality: that she, and her friends on the team, were nowhere close to Olympic hopefuls. “Tillie Walden's Spinning is an engrossing, gorgeously quiet look back at the 12 years she devoted to figure and synchronized skating.” ― New York Times. “This beautiful story about sorrow, growth, and triumph will resonate in every reader’s heart.” ―Laurie Halse Anderson, New York Times –bestselling author and two-time National Book Award finalist. “This is a beautifully told story that will resonate with anyone who played an instrument, or did gymnastics, or got signed up for skating: these things weren't always what we wanted to do or cared about, but they gave us some focus when everything else was mystery and chaos.” ―Lucy Knisley, New York Times bestselling author of Relish: My Life in the Kitchen. “ Spinning is spare yet intimate, painfully honest, and oh-so-real.” ―Malinda Lo, three-time Lambda Literary Award finalist author of Ash and Adaptation.

"Moving, honest, beautifully drawn."
"Beautifully drawn, choice of colors is touching and overall I was very much drawn into it <3."
"In guise of a book about competitive figure skating, Walden offers a subtle graphic novel memoir about growing up and speaking out. Walden's artwork, colored with a purple hue as seen on the cover, is full of motion and pathos as she makes excellent use of the comic panel structure to move the story forward while highlighting smaller moments in the narrative."
"I identified strongly with Tillie’s experiences skating as both an individual and in a team – I was a competitive swimmer all the way through college. Tillie has written and illustrated not only her life from memory, but also a highly relatable book for teens and young women everywhere."
"And I'm sure with time the author will appreciate the time spent figure skating, she will probably enjoy her skills more when they're no longer an obligatory chore."
"What a brilliant and touching graphic novel."
Signs of an oppressive regime permeate a seemingly normal life: magazines arrive edited by customs; the color red is banned after the execution of General Kassim; Baathist militiamen are publicly hanged and school kids are bussed past them to bear witness. "Wise, touching and wonderfully vivid... Findakly’s memoir covers an extended period in Iraq’s recent history... yet the half century ticks by with amazing ease, its author managing to tell both the story of a (complicated, fearful) nation, and that of one family of exiles coping with a new life in Paris. ―Publishers Weekly, Starred Review "[ Poppies of Iraq describes] a childhood caught between cultures [and] vividly capture[s] an oppressive regime as seen from a kid's guileless point of view. ―Library Journal "This absorbing graphic memoir offers an insider’s view of the rapid cultural changes that beset Iraq in the latter half of the 20th century... Short vignettes about her family, school, and local customs are alternately bittersweet, funny, and affecting as a series of military and political coups impact her family’s life in Iraq... A moving, thought-provoking title for all collections." "Poppies of Iraq is a beautiful portrait of a life lived in cultural translation, its pages filled with humor and a nostalgia made complicated with age. That’s the question at the heart of Poppies of Iraq ... a beautifully drawn graphic novel that shows how growing up in Iraq is more complicated than it seems.

Find Best Price at Amazon"Deepy personal and heartfelt, of middle class life in Iraq outside usual media stories of this country ---loved her addition of family photos."
"Brigitte relates her memories of growing up in Iraq in the 1950s-1970s, why the family eventually immigrated to France, and what it was like to visit Iraq afterward. Sometimes Ms Findakly goes back and forth in time, and everyone once in a while she throws in an "In Iraq" page about some part of Iraqi culture that Westerners usually find different. It was fascinating to hear about Brigitte Findakly's culture shock going back to Iraq just 20 years later and discovering she could no longer wear what she did before and that foods they took for granted in the past were now impossible to get. There is one scene that talks about how Palestinian refugees at one time came around and showed they were naked under their robes to get handouts, this is partly shown in the illustration (due to the illustration style not super provocative, though the illustrator did include hints of one bare breast). There's an illustration showing a line up of guys with bare butts waiting for injections (again, due to illustration style not super provocative)."
"This graphic novel tells the story of the author’s childhood as a girl in Iraq."
"I loved it, couldnt put it down till I finished it."
"A powerful, well-told account."

"I gave this book to an eleven year old as a gift before she went to Paris with her grandmother."
"I personally poured over it and found it adorable, but, at 30+, I'm slightly out of the age demographic..."
"She is now constantly filling me in on fun facts about her favorite city."
"my 7 year old daughter loves it!"
"I was a little concerned that these books would be too juvenile for them, but for the price thought it was worth a shot, because there's no way I'm going to get them to sit down with a guide book to start giving me ideas and opinions on what they might be interested in seeing! So I sat down to lunch with them, and while they read their books, I started reading the London book, and occasionally shared something funny or weird. Then 14 year old picked up the London book to keep reading when I went to get my drink, and 12 year old slipped away with the Paris book a few minutes later."
"I bought this book for my grandchildren, ages 9 and 11, to take on their trip."
"A fun, thorough introduction to Paris, for kids (and adults!)."

The Finest Hours (Young Readers Edition): The True Story of a Heroic Sea Rescue (True Storm Rescues)
On the night of February 18, 1952, during one of the worst winter storms that New England has ever seen, two oil tankers just off the shore of Cape Cod were torn in half by the force of the storm. This young readers’ adaptation of the authors’ The Finest Hours: The True Story of the U.S. Coast Guard’s Most Daring Sea Rescue (2009) was probably readied in anticipation of the upcoming Disney Studios film, and it’s no wonder—it includes the long odds, multiple young characters, and triumph of the human spirit that made films like The Perfect Storm and The Poseidon Adventure blockbusters.

"This was an outstanding story of the brave men who risked their lives during ' the storm of the century's to save the lives of men from tankers in the Atlantic Ocean."
"This is one I would love to see for the first time repeatedly!"
"An excellent, fact-based examination of the Coast Guard and its "finest hours.""

Best Teen & Young Adult Cooking & Food eBooks
Cooking for teens, like finding the perfect gift for teen boys and girls, is almost impossible. The clear instructions and striking, full-color photos will equip teen chefs to undertake their own adventures, but the reliance on butter, cream, mayonnaise, cheese, and other high-fat ingredients is a drawback for those seeking a healthy diet. Evelyn Raab's Clueless in the Kitchen (Firefly, 1998) is a far more extensive collection of recipes that also includes more basic information about equipment, shopping, and food preparation. JUDI CARLE has served as chef/author, project coordinator, and general editor on more than 20 cookbooks, including the best-selling Charlie Trotter series and, most recently, Shakespeare'¬?s Kitchen.

Best Teen & Young Adult History Comics
--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. Nick Abadzis masterfully blends fiction and fact in the intertwined stories of three compelling lives. I had no idea there were so few Soviet engineers and scientists involved in the nascent space program--not to trivialize their incredible achievement but, in many senses, they just winged it, borne along in great part by Korolev's force of will and political maneuvering. Events conspired to make Laika a sacrificial passenger on board Sputnik II, but they really did honor their canine cosmonauts. It felt like we needed to be a part of that, so I drew it extremely fast--two hundred pages in a little over eight months. Originally, I did have an idea of doing three books: Laika would be the first, Gagarin the second, and a full-on comic strip biography of Korolev [the driven engineer on the project] would be the final part that would bind together events seen in the first two. Certainly, elements of Korolev's life that I felt were important to the story made it into the final version of the book. Abadzis: I suppose it would have been easy to make it another cutesy, twee, and overly saccharine dead-dog story but that wouldn't have been true either to my taste or to the socio-political system and culture I was attempting to portray. I didn't want to anthropomorphize her, at least not to the extent that she was spouting speech/thought balloons like, say Tintin's Snowy (which works just fine for those books). The sentiment of the story, such as it is, would take care of itself and be implicit in certain character's actions or words (or not, as the case may be).... All that said, it'd be disingenuous to suggest that, in dealing with a true story that involves dogs and their owners (even if they happen to be scientists in a Soviet cosmodog program), there wouldn't be a bit of emotion. But there's also the harsh reality of the time, the place and the confluence of events that put Laika into space.

This special hardcover edition also includes an exclusive sound clip of Rick and Morty and all the cover art from the first ten issues of the comic book series! "Rick and Morty, the unlikely pair at the heart of the hit Adult Swim cartoon, happily bring their signature blend of brainy sci-fi and surreal, warped mayhem to print. When dissolute genius Rick builds a device to predict the future of the stock market, he and his bumbling teenage grandson, Morty, hit the big time. Though readers unfamiliar with the show might be thrown off by the idiosyncratic speech style, it's a pitch-perfect replica of the voice actors' performances, and the artwork, full of exaggerated cartoon shapes and grotesque creatures, expertly mimics the animation. - Booklist. "Aside from the normal difficulties inherent in being young, such as school and the trials and tribulations of parents, siblings, and friends, Morty also has to deal with his grandfather Rick, a cracked scientific genius with authority issues. Verdict Based on Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland's (adult swim) animated cartoon, Rick and Morty walks a shredding tightrope among slapstick, pathos, and hilarity, with unexpected twists and a healthy sprinkle of nutty sf concepts thrown in for good measure. The anthology nature of the stories means some pieces are stronger than others, but all are imaginative and will appeal to fans of weird sf humor that borders on the psychedelic. Cannon, Ryan Hill, and back up artist Marc Ellerby have given audiences, both in and out of know, a solid debut issue chocked with comedy and pathos that can go nowhere but up.

Despite some rule breaking, the two end up working well together in their mission on exposing the not-so-heroic Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin and the Institution of Law Enforcement and Heroics. Nimona was recommended to me by a friend from a writing group I manage (who was also nice enough to let me borrow her copy since my book budget is non-existent right now)."
"Nimona, a shapeshifting sidekick to supervillain Lord Blackheart, does serious damage around the village to prove the Institution of Law Enforcement and Heroics aren't so heroic. The Hardcover edition I bought comes with an extra Christmas special at the end."
"Absolutely fun and exciting, it moved my feelings and made me laugh in many parts."
"Stevenson included some of her sketches and the Christmas minicomic interlude when Ballister and Ambrosius were children, plus the epilogue. It is somewhat small (page-wise) for a graphic novel, which is a bit disappointing, given the large page size online when it was just a webcomic."
"The world is fun and out there, the character more complex than you thought at first glance."
"My wife and I enjoy webcomics but had never heard of Nimona, and we ordered this on a whim after Felicia Day recommended it in "The Flog"."
