The Odyssey
A lean, fleet-footed translation that recaptures Homer’s “nimble gallop” and brings an ancient epic to new life. “A staggeringly superior translation―true, poetic, lively and readable, and always closely engaged with the original Greek―that brings to life the fascinating variety of voices in Homer’s great epic.”. - Richard F. Thomas, Harvard University. “Emily Wilson has produced a clear, vigorous, sensitive Odyssey that conveys both the grand scale and the individual pathos of this foundational story. Emily Wilson has convincingly answered this call: hers is a vital Odyssey for the twenty-first century that brings into rhythmic English the power, dignity, variety, and immediacy of this great poem.”. - Laura Slatkin, New York University.
Reviews
"More than in other translations, the Odyssey comes across here strongly as a historical document, the product of a culture from a particular time and place. Muse, tell me how he wandered and was lost. when he had wrecked the holy town of Troy, and where he went, and who he met, the pain. he suffered in the storms at sea, and how. he worked to save his life and bring his men. back home. Compare Wilson's language with that of the opening of Robert Fitzgerald's translation: "Sing in me, Muse, and through me tell the story. of that man skilled in all ways of contending, the wanderer, harried for years on end, after he plundered the stronghold. on the proud height of Troy. He saw the townlands. and learned the minds of many distant men, and weathered many bitter nights and days. in his deep heart at sea, while he fought only. to save his life, to bring his shipmates home. Fitzgerald translates it as "skilled in all ways of contending," and Fagles as "the man of twists and turns.""
"I have read and taught the Odyssey at least five times over the past twenty years. And Emily Wilson's version is a godsend."
"The first stanzas will make you perk up and realize that this is the most interesting translation of the Odyssey for our time."
"but at age 81 I consider The Odyssey the greatest book I have ever read, for itself and for its influence on my ways of thinking and of living. The main reason is that, in comparison to the others, it is best at creating the mood of an ancient, epic, poem. I love it when he repeats, for the nth time, "Son of Laertes and the Gods of old, Odysseus, master of land ways and sea ways..." and other such formulaic hints that we are not reading a James Bond or even a Scott Fitzgerald, nor Salinger, nor McEwan, nor certainly a Hemingway novel -- the content should perhaps be enough to distinguish Odyssey as the great epic it is, but I like the complementing embellishments of Fitzgerald's version. For a more important difference, compare the climax, as Odysseus is about to slaughter the suitors: Fitzgerald has him say: "You yellow dogs, you thought I'd never make it. home from the land of Troy. But Fitzgerald focuses on breaking the rules, on disrespecting the mores of their time: the suitors were contemptuous of both the gods, and the opinions of their fellow men."
"I've never read the Odyssey before in it's entirety, so can't compare this to other translations."

The Untethered Soul: The Journey Beyond Yourself
Singer shows how the development of consciousness can enable us all to dwell in the present moment and let go of painful thoughts and memories that keep us from achieving happiness and self-realization. Copublished with the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS) The. Untethered Soul begins by walking you through your relationship with your thoughts and emotions, helping you uncover the source and fluctuations of your inner energy.

"I read the audio version of this book multiple times, bought copies of it for clients, and shared it with friends. After reading Michael's book, I simply allowed irrelevant, erroneous, totally made up thoughts to just float on by without attaching my emotions to them. It means you're no longer an emotional puppet on the string of everyone else's behavior, attitudes, decisions, choices, etc. I LOVED the audio version of the book because the person who read it was perfect for the content. I've read TONS of other books on similar topics but the way Michael conveyed the material was unique and different and I really GOT IT!"
"Some of the points made in The Untethered Soul are: 1. Learn to relax and stay open no matter what. Do not identify with the experiences you are observing. Facing the fact of bodily death can help you to realize that all of the observed is temporary. Do not allow painful experiences from the past to influence the present. If you want a life full of joy and love you must make a commitment to having a life full of joy and love. Learn how to live from your heart, not from your ego. The Untethered Soul is my second most favorite book on the subject of how to transcend the ego and how to realize the true Self and directly experience that perfect infinite consciousness that has only joy and love and has no suffering. My most favorite book on that subject is THE SEVEN STEPS TO AWAKENING which is a collection of quotes by these seven authors: 1."
"I see life and the spiritual journey differently, and though I do believe we all should strive for a happier life and a more peaceful spirit, I don't believe it is desirable to live without some unhappiness, some worries, some fears. The author contradicts himself many times, but more importantly doesn't indicate any awareness that he has contradicted himself. Thus, while the author makes many statements throughout that I agree with, he also constantly is making other statements that contradict previous ones, giving me the impression that he is just writing a stream of consciousness of statements cherry-picked to resonate with a broad range of spiritual-enlightenment-seekers, without much regard to whether those statements gel together to form a cohesive whole. Structure. I would not want to take that away from anyone, but sadly, it is not the book for me."

The River of Consciousness
From the best-selling author of Gratitude, On the Move, and Musicophilia, a collection of essays that displays Oliver Sacks's passionate engagement with the most compelling and seminal ideas of human endeavor: evolution, creativity, memory, time, consciousness, and experience. “Reading a book published after its authors death, especially if he is as prodigiously alive on every page as Oliver Sacks, as curious, avid and thrillingly fluent, brings both the joy of hearing from him again, and the regret of knowing it will likely be the last time…[The] combination of wonder, passion and gratitude never seemed to flag in Sacks’s life; everything he wrote was lit with it. “Reveals Sacks as a gleeful polymath and an inveterate seeker of meaning in the mold of Darwin and his other scientific heroes Sigmund Freud and William James….As this volume reminds us, in losing Sacks we lost a gifted and generous storyteller.” —Wall Street Journal “The reader is in thrall to Sacks’ ability to braid wide reading, research and experience with his neurology patients to reach original and subtle conclusions….Sacks is the expression of…mental agility, a mind at play in the world.” —Chicago Tribune. Throughout, Sacks displays his marvelous skill with words, rich knowledge of medicine and science and their histories, observational skills, curiosity, and humor, and it’s impossible not to feel the loss of this amazing thinker….Every reader should be able to find something to enjoy and appreciate here.” —Library Journal *starred review* “Sacks engages and deepens our attention through the historic and personal particulars with which he argues his points about what, say, memory, or forgetting, or creativity, or ‘A General Feeling of Disorder,’ involves organismically. So doing, he has made permanent contributions to literature.” —Booklist “The book is a tribute to [Sacks’s] appreciation of all that’s beautifully complex in humans….Readers will feel a similar sense of gratitude for the extraordinary work that Sacks left behind.” —Publishers Weekly. Pebbles shift as the water courses by, revealing unexpected facets below….By bringing these quirky, personal and curious essays together, Sacks invites readers into his mind where they can experience the world from his unusually insightful perspective.” —Science News Magazine “An incisive and generous inquiry into human nature.” —Elle.com “Sacks’s sharp intellect and observations, and passion for knowledge, shine through.” —Buzzfeed. This collection of 10 essays, some of which appeared previously in the New York Review of Books , was assembled by three colleagues from an outline provided by Sacks two weeks before his death in 2015….A collection of dissimilar pieces that reveal the scope of the author’s interests—sometimes challenging, always rewarding.” — Kirkus Reviews.
Reviews
"That quote sums up well the style of the articles, which mixes science, case history, and Sacks’ unique autobiographical memories of a life wondering why and pursuing knowledge, and is often philosophical in tone. The River of Consciousness, in sum, is a fitting representation of Oliver Sacks: a brilliant mind rejoicing in life and eager to share his joy with the rest of us."
"Another note about Sacks: he wasn’t a Pollyanna–read his observations on his own coming out in London and San Francisco in the 60s, or his chilling account of the aftereffects of a radical treatment to deal with his own, greatly advanced by then liver cancer (“A General Feeling of Disorder”)- but he was, even in his own worse moments, sunny and humane. As to Freud, Sacks champions his great, but strangely neglected, earlier work as a neurologist, which, he argues, laid the groundwork for the great man’s later abandoning of physiology for psychology, under the assumption that at some much later stage, science would discover a connection between the two. The key note of these and the other essays in this miraculous volume is the question “why.” If anything happened to Sacks’s body or psyche, he asked not just “what draw so little attention for so long? When he read William James (along with Freud, Sacks’s greatest inspiration), he hypothesized about the nature of perception: how is time perceived by humans, as continuous stream or separated but strung together moments like a cinema film?"
"I've read philosophical books on consciousness and was excited by their premises."
"Sacks has done his research both on others and himself and presented it coherently."
"Gave to daughter as a gift."
"It was greatly satisfying to have one more book from Oliver Sacks following his passing."
"Loved section on memory and earthworms."

Cracking the Coding Interview: 189 Programming Questions and Solutions
And as such, I know what it's like to be asked to whip up brilliant algorithms on the spot and then write flawless code on a whiteboard. Learn how to uncover the hints and hidden details in a question, discover how to break down a problem into manageable chunks, develop techniques to unstick yourself when stuck, learn (or re-learn) core computer science concepts, and practice on 189 interview questions and solutions. Extensive coverage of essential topics, such as big O time, data structures, and core algorithms. At Google, she interviewed hundreds of software engineers and evaluated thousands of hiring packets on the hiring committee.

"The DP solutions in this book are not actually tabular DP formulations--I recommend looking at the problems here http://people.cs.clemson.edu/~bcdean/dp_practice/ (Brian Dean's Dynamic Programming Practice Problems)."
"I got several offers and without doubt this book helped. The specific coding questions that I would have failed outright on had I not read the book include: breadth first search/shortest path, fundamentals of hash tables, and recursion (fibonacci)."
"Like this book, the material very well structured, with real life examples."
"Good paper quality, great questions organized into exercises covering most important basics like Data structures, programming languages, problem approach etc."
"The afternoon before I interviewed with Amazon for a scientist role, the HR said you should prepare for data structure and algorithm."
"I did many other things to prepare besides using this book, but I nailed my interviews and got a great offer so I can't complain!"
"I've been writing software for a long time, and I'm competent at my job. Because the presence of books like these create a vicious cycle: prep book gets written; interviewees study/memorize answers; interviewers make questions "harder" to compensate; new book gets written! The grinder continues to turn, and whereas ten years ago you could get a good job with some string or linked-list manipulation questions, now you've got people who consider whiteboard coding of topcoder elite questions to be the baseline measurement of programmer competency. You'll even run into lazy interviewers who take questions directly from this book, which is the ultimate in stupidity: if "good" candidates have prepared from the book, and you ask questions directly from the book, what are you really accomplishing, other than a test of memorization skills? I've seen it myself."

The Anatomy Coloring Book
For more than 35 years, The Anatomy Coloring Book has been the #1 best-selling human anatomy coloring book! Immediately recognizing the potential of this method, Dr. Elson encouraged Kapit to do a “complete” coloring book on anatomy and offered to collaborate on the project. The first edition of The Anatomy Coloring Book was published in 1977, and its immediate success inspired the development of a completely new field of publishing: educational coloring books. In the early 1990s, Kapit wrote and designed The Geography Coloring Book, now in its second edition. This is his seventh text, having authored It’s Your Body and The Zoology Coloring Book and co-authored The Human Brain Coloring Book and The Microbiology Color. ing Book. Dr. Elson was assistant professor of anatomy at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, participated in the development of the Physician’s Assistant Program, lectured and taught dissection anatomy at the University of California School of Medicine in San Francisco, and taught general anatomy, from protozoons to humans, at City College of San Francisco.

"IMPORTANT: Make sure you READ ALL the information in the section labeled "INTRODUCTION TO COLORING" BEFORE you start coloring your first page. For example, I chose Red, Orange and Yellow for the "Levators"; 2 colors of Blue for the "Zygomaticus Major" and "Zygomaticus Minor"' and 2 shades of Brown for the "Depressors" (page 44). NOTE: I realize this takes extra time planning your colors, but it really makes it easier to memorize when there is a consistant plan in place for what the colors visually symbolize."
"It's a great learning tool for all ages."
"Very informative, and makes things a bit more fun."
"I bought this coloring book for my girlfriend when she started massage school."
"I didn't want to spend a couple $100 on another textbook when I took a summer anatomy class, but thankfully I heard about this textbook from other students and thought $15 is better than hundreds."
"My only critique is that I wish the words and pictures were a little bigger, but overall great educational coloring book."
"The only thing I would say that might be negative is that the older versions had pictures that were larger, but I realize there is so much more information they have put into the book."
"Much more difficult than anticipated...in a good/challenging way."

"I've spent quite a bit of time today looking at various pages, and while distracting, the text from following pages doesn't completely overwhelm what you are trying to read. I had read that the pages were thinner in the last few editions making it more difficult to read, but I decided to buy it anyway. You can see the back of the page clearly, the front and back of the next page, and sometimes even the next page! This book is vastly more difficult to read than the 24th edition I have, and despite having some additional information I would like to have at my fingertips and the larger type, I just can't keep this book. What good is having super thin and super delicate pages on a book that you will use the most?"
"I'm young and good eyesight so I can read it fairly easy but I still find it annoying."
"The increased cost is worth it."
"I really like the larger format of the book."
"received and it is just as expected."
"Some of the reviewers commented on how the print on this toolbox edition is not legible and you can see the text from the backside."
"One would think after the fiasco with thin pages in the previous version, Industrial Prints would have figured not to use the same thin paper in their latest 30th edition of the book..."
"If you are a machinist or hobby machinist this book contains a lot of material you will never use."

Behave: The Biology of Humans at Our Best and Worst
Sapolsky's storytelling concept is delightful but it also has a powerful intrinsic logic: he starts by looking at the factors that bear on a person's reaction in the precise moment a behavior occurs, and then hops back in time from there, in stages, ultimately ending up at the deep history of our species and its evolutionary legacy. Sapolsky keeps going: How was that behavior influenced by structural changes in the nervous system over the preceding months, by that person's adolescence, childhood, fetal life, and then back to his or her genetic makeup? The result is one of the most dazzling tours d'horizon of the science of human behavior ever attempted, a majestic synthesis that harvests cutting-edge research across a range of disciplines to provide a subtle and nuanced perspective on why we ultimately do the things we do...for good and for ill. Sapolsky builds on this understanding to wrestle with some of our deepest and thorniest questions relating to tribalism and xenophobia, hierarchy and competition, morality and free will, and war and peace. "Sapolsky has created an immensely readable, often hilarious romp through the multiple worlds of psychology, primatology, sociology and neurobiology to explain why we behave the way we do. “[Sapolskly’s] new book is his magnum opus, but is also strikingly different from his earlier work, veering sharply toward hard science as it looms myriad strands of his ruminations on human behavior. The familiar, enchanting Sapolsky tropes are here—his warm, witty voice, a sleight of hand that unfolds the mysteries of cognition—but Behave keeps the bar high. It is a magnificent culmination of integrative thinking, on par with similar authoritative works, such as Jared Diamond’s Guns, Germs, and Stee l and Steven Pinker’s The Better Angels of Our Nature .” — Michael Shermer, American Scholar. They should put Behave in hotel rooms instead of the Bible: the world would be a much better, wiser place” — Kate Fox, author of Watching the English. Behave ranges at great length from moral philosophy to social science, genetics to Sapolsky’s home turf of neurons and hormones—but all of it is aimed squarely at the question of why humans are so awful to each other, and whether the condition is terminal.” — Vulture. You feel like a lucky auditor in a fast-paced undergraduate course, where the implications of fascinating scientific findings are illuminated through topical stories and pop-culture allusions.” — Nature “Sapolsky’s book shows in exquisite detail how culture, context and learning shape everything our genes, brains, hormones and neurons do.” — Times Literary Supplement. “[Sapolsky] does an excellent job of bringing together the expansive literature of thousands of fascinating studies with clarity and humor….A tour-de-force.” — Library Journal (starred review). “Sapolsky finds not the high moral drama of the soul choosing good or evil but rather down-to-earth biology….a remarkably encyclopedic survey of the sciences illuminating human conduct.” — Booklist (starred review). “Read Robert Sapolsky’s marvelous book Behave and you’ll never again be surprised by the range and depth of our own bad behavior. —David Eagleman, PhD, neuroscientist at Stanford, author, presenter of PBS's The Brain " Behave is a beautifully crafted work about the biology of morality. Its depth and breadth of scholarship are amazing, building on Sapolsky’s own research and his vast knowledge of the neurobiology, genetic, and behavioral literature. For instance, Behave includes fair evaluations of complex debates (like over sociobiology) that I was involved in, and tackles controversial questions such as whether our hunter-gatherer ancestors warred on each other. All this is done brilliantly with a light and funny touch that shows why Sapolsky is recognized as one of the greatest teachers in science today.” —Paul R. Ehrlich, author of Human Natures.
Reviews
"The downside of reading Sapolsky's latest work is it will cause you to question long held beliefs about guilt or innocence, good and evil, moral or immoral."
"We are capable of both far worse than we want to believe and can do more to change the world for the better than we tend to think we're able; and in both cases it's because of things we don't know, can't explain or don't want to control. But the more we try to expand the tiny sliver of knowledge we do have, with respect for how small that sliver is; and the more awareness we can have that the world around us and our biology drive much more of what we do in any moment than our conscious intellect, emotions or "free will" do - the more hope we have of doing more to change the world with the little bit of actual influence we possess."
"Nature , nurture, early childhood experience (including abuse), and peer pressure all have an impact on behavior. There is no "silver bullet" that explains individual behavior. The pop culture rewrite probably would run 200 pages without the plumbing and wiring diagrams."
"This is an impressive book."
"The newest on brain science by the world wide expert, Robert Sapolsky."

Reviews

"I bought this book under my mother's amazon account so I'm posting this as a 22 year old who had to take the ATI TEAS test for entrance into nursing programs. I felt like I got some questions on the test that the science section touched on but didn't delve very deep into (mostly concerning with the endocrine system), but a majority of the science questions could be answered by reading and studying the book. I recently graduated from college with a health related degree, but I do think that without this study guide I wouldn't have done as well, it helped me brush up on topics I had forgotten as well as teach me things I never knew (mostly relating to English grammar section)."
"Yesterday, I took my TEAS test after using this guide for approximately three weeks, and I am pleased to have earned an 88% with a national percentile rank of 97. Since statistics is tested, albeit very slightly, I would recommend you study the regression charts and lessons for positive/negative skew. Some topics I would recommend for students to reassess are: the components and anatomy of eukaryotes / prokaryotes, ionic and covalent bonds, the products of both mitosis and meiosis, and DNA replication. Test yourself with flash cards the most commonly misspelled words, prefixes and suffixes. In conclusion, this is a wonderful guide that will wrack and plumb your brain for all of the information you should have learned up to this point."
"I recommend using the first practice test as a starting point to determine what you need to study, then spend some time studying before taking the second and third practice tests."

Changeling: the Lost
Taken from your home, transformed by the power of Faerie, kept as the Others' slave or pet - but you never forgot where you came from.
Reviews
"Consequently, my take on "Changeling: the Lost" is largely based on how it compares to its predecessor, "Changeling: the Dreaming." Changelings of "the Lost" come by the title more honestly, being very mortal escapees from their faerie captors."
"I love it despite at this point i'm more interested in making a character before getting into anything else just yet.Though I'm not sure if I can find anyone who like to join me in a session that lives nearby that can help me find my bearings so i can enjoy the (possibly?)."
"The book was in better than expected condition, I'm so glad to get my RP parties going with fae!"
"The concept of a parallel faerie world seems like it would be very difficult to turn into a RP story, and I'm not sure if I will ever play this game (I think I'm leaning more toward Vampire), but I would recommend this book just for the ideas & inspiration."
"I bought this for my BFF and she LOVES it!"
"Great stories and characters plus lots of insight into the Fae."
"Changeling: The Dreaming was the biggest disappointments of the original World of Darkness. Unlike the other reimagined WoD this book is a great step up. This is by far the best second try of all the WoD games."
"I bought this book expecting a good game."

Good Teams Win, Great Teams Cover: An Underdog's Tale of Life, Gambling and Sharp Sports Betting
I had spent the previous night in an Italian bar trying to convince naïve girls that I was Jason Sehorn of the New York Giants. My strategy of situational betting in college and pro football is a time-tested method for beating the sportsbook. Included are detailed examples from past football seasons which will allow the reader to gain a firm understanding of the concepts that can make your betting very profitable. I also mix in candid and embarrassing personal stories that makes this a highly entertaining read while providing valuable insight that will educate all levels of degenerate gamblers. If you are sick of praying for backdoor covers, if countless bad beats have made your betting life miserable, if you are reloading your gambling account way too often - then this book is for you. Besides being a degenerate gambler, Pat is the host of Club Shaw’s Draft Party.
Reviews
"I have to admit I haven't really read any other books on sports betting so this automatically makes it my favorite, but it is well written and packed with great info. I'm not one for tons of statistics and anything that will put me to sleep, and this was a book that puts some great insight into translatable terms that was easy to read."
"Until I found this book. It's the only book I've found that has all the info you need to be consistently successful put together all in one place .. and written so the average Joe like me can understand it ."
"I've been looking for a good book on sportsbetting to fuel my degeberate gambling habits and I randomly came by this book."
"What I really liked about Pats book is how he reminds us how to stay the course and find VALUE in your picks."
"My favorite part is he doesn't bullsh*t you- he recognizes that there will be some losses, but the name of the game is using every edge and advantage you can find and this book is great for that and an easy read to top it off."
"I love advanced stats and algorithyms but it was refreshing to read a book that reminded me why people fall in love with picking sports games to begin with."
"Definitely doesn't hurt to read, no matter the material, about sports betting if you are a new or avid gambler."
"The only people who could have liked this book had to be either a family member or one of the many friends referenced in the book."

Reviews
"I've got the other books he wrote, they are very helpful and the amount of pain removed from my body makes it worth far more than I paid. About the only improvement I could suggest is more sketch overlays that indicate the area of focus, direction of motion, things like that. Sketch lines down the spine and arm or leg, little angle symbol or curved arrows help me to understand very well. Seriously, anybody that thinks light thin text on shiny paper is a good idea should not be publishing books. If the ink were a full black, the font a little thicker, or maybe just printed on regular paper it wouldn't be such a struggle. (And maybe it is a full black, but the shiny paper effect makes it look like a dim gray at best to me.). The contrast is simply poor and I can't stand reading this book more than a few minutes at a time, which is really frustrating because the information is so valuable that I am compelled to suffer through it. EDIT: I'm going to try and upload a picture showing what I'm talking about, and I apologize if my camera isn't the greatest."
"I did get a standing desk (before reading this book) but then my lower back started to hurt."
"Gorgeous photographs and drawings illustrate proper spinal mechanics and movements, and the book ends with strategies and techniques for dealing with the mischief and mayhem we cause for ourselves by sitting too long and too often in a position that nature never intended."
"You can go deep in the text or stay in browse mode and use the pictures."
"Great book."
"This book addresses all of my problem areas and has completely changed the way I interact with my computer during the day."
"Extremely practical information."
