Getting Stoned with Savages tells the hilarious story of Troost’s time on Vanuatu—a rugged cluster of islands where the natives gorge themselves on kava and are still known to “eat the man.” Falling into one amusing misadventure after another, Troost struggles against typhoons, earthquakes, and giant centipedes and soon finds himself swept up in the laid-back, clothing-optional lifestyle of the islanders. “A comic masterwork of travel writing.” — Publishers Weekly.

From the bestselling author of The Sex Lives of Cannibals , the laugh-out-loud true story of his years on the islands of Vanuatu and Fiji, among cannibals, volcanoes . This really means that Troost gets to live in a nice house while he gets drunk on kava; dodges "a long inferno of magma and a cascade of lava bombs" at the "world's most accessible volcano"; and checks out the "calcified" leftovers from one of Vanuatu's not-so-ancient traditions, cannibalism. While modern-day Fiji provides little fodder for Troost's comic sensibilities, the birth of his son enables him to share some deeper thoughts and decide it is "time to stop looking for paradise."

Best Australia Travel Guides
Despite the fact that Australia harbors more things that can kill you in extremely nasty ways than anywhere else, including sharks, crocodiles, snakes, even riptides and deserts, Bill Bryson adores the place, and he takes his readers on a rollicking ride far beyond that beaten tourist path.

Find Best Price at Amazon"I'm a sexagenarian who, on a recent vacation, happened to walk out and back on the first three miles or so of the southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail (Springer Mtn, GA) and, in a fit of exhilaration, decided then and there that I would, by golly, hike the AT before I died. As I was joyfully entertained by his incisive sense of humor, I was simultaneously and seriously learning history, biology, geology (and several other -ologies) as well as being discomfitted by Bryson's documentation of our culture's dismissive practices regarding ecology."
"If you are an Anglophile, or if you have ever traveled to, or lived in the UK, you will enjoy reading this book about some of the cities, towns, villages, and places beyond the beaten track of most American tourists (i.e. London and environs)."
"His weaving of the natural and political history of the area covered by the AT, as well as other notable sites, particularly our National Parks, with his observations and experiences on the trail, make this book a treasure and a delight unlike any other book of its kind."
"I recommend the book, but I suggest you read the parts where he is hiking with Katz and skim the rest."
"It is a very fine book and probably deserves five stars, but I was feeling a bit chintzy because of perceived page inflation concerning forays into interesting but only tangentially related history."

"One of my favorite lines, something to the effect of "Staying loyal to a bad decision does not make it a good decision", is a perfect example of both the catchiness and depth of how Sheshunoff describes the more subtle journey underlying his external adventures."
"When my daughter told me she was going to Palau to do research for her PhD I Started looking for a book about present day Palau and came across Alex's website."
"While a little long, Paradise is a funny, emotional take on an (early) mid-life crisis."

Best Papua New Guinea Travel Guides
This is the completely revised edition of the essential field guide to the birds of New Guinea. "This is an excellent book and will serve travelling birders very well indeed and I am sure will be just as welcomes by local wildlife lovers in New Guinea. Please buy it, whether or not you're planning a trip to West Papua or PNG. [A] high quality field guide, with maps on the same page as the plates, excellent, informative text, good artwork--and everything one hopes for in a field guide." "I can not recommend this guide highly enough whether you are planning a trip to New Guinea or you are just an armchair birder widening your horizons about the world's birds. "Pratt and Beehler here cover all 780 bird species in this region, drawing in even more biological data--including some on behavior, diet, and nesting--than typically found in field guides. Detailed species accounts are now separate from the 111 color illustrations--most new and twice as many as the first edition--with additional abridged species accounts and habitat maps facing these plates. "A wonderful updated and expanded second edition to the original Birds of New Guinea published 28 years ago. An absolute must-have for both birders and individuals who work in the public or private sector focused on conservation of New Guinea's ecosystems."

"This new updated version features all new artwork, updated text and taxonomy, range maps and new information about birds in New Guinea. The introduction covers the how to use this book and New Guinea natural history then a short section about birding in New Guinea followed by some references. It is a must for any birder visiting this island or anyone just wanting to do some armchair birding."
"Color plates, range maps and short species presentations are on facing pages, but the bulk of the information can be found in a separate text-only section further back in the book. I'm not sure why “Mayr 1941” laid out the regional borders in this way, but hopefully it had something to do with the makeup of the actual avifauna…. As an interesting side point, Jared Diamond was involved in the making of this book. Yes, the all-knowing geography professor and popular science writer was an ornithologist in a previous life, writing papers with funny-sounding names such as “Geophagy in New Guinea birds”."
"This supposedly new edition retains the antique format including 20+ illustrations per page and makes you look elsewhere for descriptions and other data."

"Jim Butcher has managed to layer a world of supernatural fantasy over our own in such a way that makes it very easy for the reader to digest as the fantasy premises are introduced in bit-sized increments throughout the serise, until you realize you've been given an detailed and expansive fantasy world."
"I normally read pure fantasy books, however, I'd seen the failed TV show and like it and the concept of this book, so I gave it a read. Every book in the series are like those books you just don't to put down."
"I love the Dresden Files; I only wish there were more of them as I've read them all more than once!"
"While the books typically follow a somewhat formulaic approach to plot, the ongoing narrative makes up for the predictability of the "several unrelated things trying to kill Harry all really have something to do with each other" schtick."
"Every book is better than the last, pure fun and excitement page after page."
"My only complaint is that it is one large book on my kindle and not broken up individually."
"Charming characters you can gladly cheer, baddies you can lustily boo, and plot twists that make you laugh, gasp, or cry."
