"I don't claim to be an expert on Cuban music."

Vacunao
First modern recording by Cuba's famed rumba masters, recorded by ace Latin music engineer, Jon Fausty, a slammin' drum record.
Reviews
"On VACUNAO they not only explore the Afro Cuban terrain of the Efik belief (ABAKUA) and Palo Mayombe (SARABANDA) but also give their take on traditional Brazilian samba music as the intro to LENGUA DE OBBARA."
"I agree with the first reviewer of this album by Los Muñequitos De Matanzas, this is certainly a very 'pleasant surprise.'."
"If you're expecting some kind of ballroom salsa when you hear the word "Rumba", prepare yourself for a pleasant surprise."

"Read this line twice: If you like rumba and out of this world solos on congas & bata you cannot afford not having this album. Other recommendations (of my favorites) are: Batacumbele (all their stuff is good, try los hijos del tambor or Con un poco de songo) if you can find them ,Cachao Lopez (descargas), Bobby Sanabria - Aché and Truco y zaperoko. Last words: If you are a conga player and try to follow on your own while listening to the CD be careful, you may have a heart attack while trying."

Best South & Central America

Land of the Incas - Music of the Andes
Inkuyo , a group of accomplished musicians, brings the ancient instruments and songs of the majestic Andean highlands and of their Incan heritage, firmly into the 20th century. Performing on the quena (a resonant cane flute), an assortment of pan-pipes, Andean drums and other percussion instruments, as well as specially constructed versions of the guitar, violin, harp, and tiple (introduced by the Spanish), the members of Inkuyo conjure a heady atmosphere of scintillating melodies and spicy, South American rhythms. An internationally recognized virtuoso of pan-pipes and South American flutes, Inkuyo founder Gonzalo Vargas , inherited his traditional musical knowledge growing up in the remote Andean village of Tapajkari, Bolivia.
Reviews
"I purchased this CD for my son in law."
"I just got a little tired of OAR and I'm getting into Lifehouse, but this music is impossible to get tired of. I'm not a big fan of other world music (except Balkan Beat Box and Kidjo) or Andean music with vocals (it detracts from the mood), nor am I a fan of new age because it's usually yoga music, but I guess this music just hits the spot for me. It's so unbelieveable how this music takes you mentally over and through lush green mountains, winding rivers, icy mountains, little villages, heavy waterfalls with cool wind at your back and condors overhead."
"I guess that makes sense, considering the music is from the high Andes."
"Terrific music!"
"just energetic enough for a good brisk pace to walk to - some of the tunes are a bit slower, so I can breathe."
"Very enjoyable music to listen to."
"this CD totally exceeded my expectations.i love this kind of music.this is the second inkuyo CD i buy,the first one was "The double-headed serpent" that CD was my introduction to inkuyo,,and i have to say that i love them both the same."
"This is a beautiful CD and just right to play with a slideshow for our recent trip to Peru, highlight of which was Machu Pichuu!"

Best Far East & Asia

The Music of Vietnam
It is a distinctive mix of folk instruments and courtly formality--a highly disciplined and richly ornamented music originally conceived for moments of importance and ceremony. Several unusual instruments are employed, including the dan bau , a one-string guitar with a bamboo stem that bends notes like a whammy bar , and the k'ni , a rifle-shaped fiddle with a mouth attachment that can create a voice-box effect similar to that used by rock guitarists such as Peter Frampton and Joe Walsh in the '70s. The music is so expertly performed and so beautifully sequenced--the focus shifting from ensemble to solo pieces, from stringed instruments to flutes--that attention never wanders. The most exciting pieces feature a clarinet playing long lines over pounding percussion, a combination common to the music of many Southeast Asian nations.
Reviews
"Item as described."
"Truly a nice selection of music from the North and South, played on instruments foreign to the ear in America."
"Not sure who put this together or where it comes from, but it is an excellent set of traditional vietnamese music which is very hard to find good examples of."
"That book(s) for the traditional discs share the same background material and then have notes on the individual selections. I've had this cranked up on my large car stereo and the sound is clean with good separation. I don't have a large collection of east Asian discs but this is easily my favorite."
"Viet Nam is most often identified with communism and with war, which is a pity, because the music of Viet Nam is as expressive and as complex as pieces written by Bach or Beethoven."

Hindustani Classical Vocal
Reviews
"Classical Hindustani music dates back to the vedic chant tradition (c. 1000 BCE) and even now this music is centered on vocal performance. Luckily, all three vocalists well surpassed my expectations, and having them together gave me the chance to compare their individual voices and styles."
"This is a great set, a real value. Three excellent vocalists, one each cd, beautifully recorded."

Best Reggae

Dread Beat an' Blood
Reviews
"This is the absolute best album from this extremely talented artist and activist."
"LKJ doesn't sing, and he doesn't rap, he is a poet from the city of London and he recites his poems over some of the hardest dub riddims ever laid down. Like U Roy is to be considered the godfather of toast, Linton Kwesie Johnson must be credited as the godfather of dub poetry."
""Mi sae, lissen, oppressin man, hear what I say if yu can;" It was such a great and rich time for good reggae and Linton Kwesi Johnson with his unique voice added to its treasure. In 2012, Mr Johnson's message still pays tribute and gives heart to decency, Thatcher's legacy leaves a taste as bitter as the ashes of the lives she helped betray."
"Only one complaint: this reissue CD excludes the "All We Doin' is Defendin'" dub, which appeared on the original Virgin 12" single; a dub that will break your spine."
