But Panama Red (their only gold record) had a lot more going for it than just countercultural kicks the band, by now consisting of John Dawson, David Nelson, Dave Torbert, pedal steel ace Buddy Cage and Jefferson Airplane drummer Spencer Dryden was much tighter than any outfit this stoned had a right to be, and with songwriting contributions from Peter Rowan (the hit Panama Red and Lonesome L.A.

From bilingual calypsos to guajira jazz, from tropical guarachas to cumbia tamboreras, Panamanian musicians fearlessly combined and brilliantly executed styles that reflected their multicultural environment during a turbulent time in the young country's history.

Soundway continues its mission to expose the best in funk, Latin and Afro music from Africa, the Caribbean and South America by introducing the likes of the The Exciters, Victor Boa and Lord Cobra once again, giving them the exposure and recognition they deserve. We have dug deep to present a broad range of styles that run parallel to the development of soul and funk music in the US and the nascent salsa sound emerging from Miami, Cali and Baranquilla.

Find Best Price at Amazon"All of these CDs have extremely well-written liner notes by the main compiler, Roberto Ernesto Gyemant, and he adds a personal touch. Sr. Gyemant has spent a lot of time searching all over Panama for vinyl records, including overseeing the digital transfers, which are top notch. Let me help you pick one: Volume 1 is the most "urban" - there is a more North American Soul/R&B influence in the songs (the US Armed Forces' SCN radio had an impact after all). Volume 2 seems to have the most "rural" Panamanian feel - indigenous sounds from the interior - música típica - that kind of stuff."
"I also look forward to playing this CD at my annual BBQ, my parents will be proud!"
"I would recommend this collection to any Panameno American wanting to get to know there cultural roots musically."
"By the end of the century, precisely in 1881 the French company "Compagnie Universal du Canal Interoceanique", led by Ferdinand de Lesseps, started to build a Canal across Panama; and many of the workers came from the West Indies mainly from Jamaica, Barbados, Trinidad, Martinique and Guadeloupe; these Afro-Caribbean people brought their music as well. More or less at the same time people from around the globe arrived to Colon City on the Atlantic coast (the forced path from NYC to San Francisco) during to the California gold rush, establishing bars and cabarets bringing new music from the United States such as Jazz, Blues, Folk, etc. ), rock and jazz with folkloric Panamanian music, creating a colorful, vivid and original style; almost extinct at the present day."
"You can enjoy pure original soul music (tracks 12, 9, 2 ) with such a good quality that can easily be compare with that produced by Afro-American legends...Panamanian Calypso is gratefully vindicated by Lord Cobra, probably the most important calypsonian of the Caribbean during the sixties and seventies."
"I was born in 1976, so i guess i missed all of this, i am from Panama and i can honestly say that this album blew my mind, being a music enthusiast i am always searching for seventies combos nacionales music and had heard some funk and calypsos from the country, but this pieces i didn't know existed until i bought this cd."

"La Ley - MTV Unplugged is an awesome cd, I listen to it all the time, Great music."
"this CD is one of my fav."

While it's hard to separate acoustic guitar's early-'80s reinvention from the hands of the late innovator Michael Hedges, Southern Exposure reveals de Grassi as an integral part of that creative cauldron, and his work has dated little--still proof that meditative moods can coexist with accomplished instrumental skill.
Reviews

Originally released in March 1964, this collaboration between saxophonist Stan Getz and guitarist João Gilberto came at seemingly the end of the bossa nova craze Getz himself had sparked in 1962 with Jazz Samba , his release with American guitarist Charlie Byrd. Getz/Gilberto , which featured composer Antonio Carlos Jobim on piano, not only yielded the hit "Girl from Ipanema" (sung by Astrud Gilberto, the guitarist's wife, who had no professional experience) but also "Corcovado" ("Quiet Night")--an instant standard, and the definitive version of "Desafinado."
Reviews
Find Best Price at Amazon"This is one CD I never tire of hearing... the voices, rhythms and sensual, enchanting melodies transport me to a place within very different from the Portugal I visited in the 90's. If you cannot "get" why I and myriad others experience the Getz/Gilberto collaboration as Divinely inspired, one size never fits all."
"One can wear out the term "classic" and not half do justice to this important album, the best intro-to-bossa nova CD I know of."
"I first heard this album at my aunt and uncle's house about a year after it was first released, along with Jazz Samba, and was hooked on smooth bossa nova and the larger world of Latin jazz."
"The mint green disc is protected by a translucent plastic sleeve, which in turn has its own embossed cardboard holder. I have 3 versions of this samba classic from Stan Getz and Joao Gilberto- the Red Book CD, the SACD and the new SHM-SACD. In general, the disc sounds more analogue than digital and doesn't have the negative sonic qualities one might associate with many CD's. I hope that Amazon appreciates the fact that there is a strong market out there for hi rez formats that offer alternatives to regular CDs. Perhaps in the future Amazon will consider introducing a separate category for high resolution formats like SACD, SHM, XRCD, etc."
"Getz's jazz saxaphone unobtrusively blends in with the bossa nova and samba music. You can play it as background music for dinners or cocktails, or just play it to listen and dance (OK: this would be slow dancing rather than head bangind metallica) or just to chill while sipping wine, drinking beer, or savoring a caipirina. While living and working in Central and Eastern Europe so many people commented on liking the music (Czech, Austrian, Hungarian, Bosnian and Croatian) that I used to give out copies as presents. As you listen to the music you soon imagine being beach-side, the sun's rays beating down on you, the slight ocean breeze ruffling your hair and that of the pretty women you are trying to avoid staring at while you notice the seagulls crying in the distance sometimes louder than the crashing waves, sometimes not, and the scent of coco oil, and other tropical aromas, flavors and sabores. If for some reason you don't like the cd, give it to a friend, or better yet hold on to it, your musical tastes will mature so that you appreciate this."
