Complete Chamber Music
Reviews
"I love this thing...this and also the Brilliant Classics Corellil box set...I am going to stick with Brilliant Classics in the future."
"It's OK. Nicely packaged."
"nice to have this compilation in one set-."
"These are very well recorded and thoughtful performances."
"Did not to much about the composer."
"All of it displays Purcell's melodic gift and inventive harmony and there's nothing in any of the seven discs that smacks of filler; it's a treasure trove of great music which will give you pleasure for many years. They play on violins, violas and violas da gamba rather than viols, and I miss the wonderful sound on Fretwork's superb disc of these pieces Purcell the Complete Fantazias & in Nomines, but the playing is excellent and, on these instruments, I have no complaint about the performance whatever."
"Purcell (like Correlli) is often overlooked when folks start looking for Baroque and/or Chamber music."
"Not all is harpsichord, the first four discs are sonatas with violin, violas, bass, and continuo. The completeness, sound, and, price of this set combined together guided me give this the 5 star rating."

Consort of Musicke by William Byrd & Orlando Gibbons; Sweelinck: Fantasia in D The Glenn Gould Edition
Reviews
"I can listen to the Bach while sweeping or cleaning, but this i have to sit and listen to."
"I had this recording as an LP, and I am really happy to hear it again."
"Superbly played -- with real feeling for these late-rennaissance pieces."
"Enjoyed this a great deal."
"These are fine recordings that owe everything to Gould's eccentric and pure musical vision, but it must be stated that Sony Classical has hardly been generous with these reissues. The liner notes to this disc archly refer to "Columbia" in quotes, as if the record company that defined an entire era in classical music, comprehensively recording Bruno Walter, Leonard Bernstein, George Szell, Igor Stravinsky, and Glenn Gould, among countless other icons of the era, were a fictional bygone relic that modern day corporate record executives somehow have to refer to "in quotes.""
"Excellent service."
"Excellent music and well -played."
"My only complaint is that the Sweelinck sound quality is especially poor."

Works of Igor Stravinsky
2007 issue of 22 CD's filled with the works of the great composer drawn from the vaults of Columbia Records.
Reviews
"I found all the performances (as conducted either by Stravinsky or Craft) gave me a strong sense of how Stravinsky personally envisioned his works."
"22 discs, conducted by The Master himself (with one exception, and exceptional, disc conducted by friend and protege Robert Craft. I purchased that 22 disc set for about $30 (that's not a typo) from a UK seller listed on amazon/us and received it in less than a week - many US sellers take longer to ship their product!"
"Stravinsky is the conductor for almost all the performances with the CBS orchestra and, though recorded in the early to late 60's, the sound is spectacular. Bravo for this generous release and anyone, both new and familiar with Stravinsky need not think twice about purchasing this."
"I originally purchased this set in order to replace a few worn out LP's from the 60's."
"Having just watched Jewels by the Paris Opera Ballet on DVD, I was curious about his Capriccio for Piano, which was the first from this set I played."
"oh my this is great music."
"The price for this many works is astounding, and I highly recommend this to any classical enthusiast."
"Loves the whole collection and would recommend it to any fan of Stravinsky you literally get all of his works famous and not but excellent selection."

Mozart Edition: Complete Works 1
Mozart Edition: The Complete Works will make a great gift this Holiday season for the music lover in your life or someone who is hard to buy for.
Reviews
"If you are loading some of the works into your iTunes library for use on an iPod, as I am, there are inconveniences in variability of the disc labeling such that the format of the labeling varies between parts of the same opera so that iTunes loads the tracks on one part out of order in the library. You will have to manually correct the labeling of each track in order to get the tracks of the operas affected by this problem in correct order for iTunes and your iPod to play them in correct order. For instance, the CD in the envelope labeled part 3 of Cosi Fan Tutte, volume 9 CD 40 with the CD itself labeled part 3, volume 9 CD 40, actually contains the tracks for part 1, volume 9 CD 38, so you get a duplicate of CD 38 but no CD 40, thus missing the last tracks of Cosi Fan Tutte. There are also several cases so far of tracks that "freeze" and cycle the read head in the CD drive and preventing ejection of the CD without closing iTunes and starting it up again with the offending track unchecked to cause iTunes to bypass it. So far (about 60% of the discs reviewed) the errors have occurred on only a few discs, with manual relabeling correcting all but a couple of incorrect track content problems."
"It is hard to justify spending $120 for one opera, but if you do buy this Mozart box set you will be rewarded with a delightful Così fan tutte. Huub Claessens brings the correct blend to Don Alfonso -- a character actor's comic patter plus a lyrical ability to actually sing the music. Soile Isokoski tosses off Fiordiligi's "Come scoglio" without making it sound like an Olympic routine on the uneven parallel bars. While her trouser impersonations of the doctor and notary are somewhat sloppy (albeit for intentional comic purposes), I'll take her chesty blustering over the standard drill of ear-piercing nasality. Don Giovanni is quite good, although the cast is not as strong as for Così, and the tempos seem out of proportion in the Act One finale. I like Le nozze di Figaro despite its flaws -- blatant nepotism is perpetrated by Marie Kuijken (the conductor's wife? I have found a few unfamiliar (to me) treasures in the box set: The Divertimenti of Volume 3 make pleasant background music while I am working."
"Mozart, along with all piano music composers/players of that period, would have given his right arm for a modern piano; well maybe not an arm, but possibly a leg. Most of those are very well done as well, although I must point out to those performers as well as all other "period practice" cultists, that Bach did not write for countertenors."

Saint-Saëns: Five Symphonies
Reviews
"I purchased this cd because I liked the 3rd symphony so much that I wanted to add the others to my library. Not only has this unnumbered symphony become my favorite from Saint-Saëns, it has become my favorite symphony (though I do prefer the first 3 movements to the last, which I find to be less distinctive). I have noticed that often times his phrases actually overlap, which might explain the natural flow, or which may just indicate that he took greater caution with his transitions that others did."
"My only quibble is that the Third Symphony is divided into only two tracks, the actual two movements as composed, not into the four sections customarily separated on CD recordings of this work."
"Yes, I do find listening to Saint Saens' Symphonies a wonderful musical experience although I do know it's not considered to be too musically "cool" to enjoy the Saint Saens' Symphonies, I really DON'T CARE! This two disc set (each disc running well over 70 minutes) of the Saint Saens' Symphonies is filled with some lovely late romantic charmers--Saint Saens' complete 5 symphonies. No, these symphonies ain't Mahler and no they don't require deep serious "brain-cramp" inducing contemplation; however, these symphonies by Camille Saint Saens are a real listening pleasure being so very easy to mentally grasp that I just allowed myself to be swept away in the sheer romantic sounds of the works. The most famous of Saint Saens' Symphonies is, of course, the "Organ" Symphony (the third) and it is indeed very exciting with the pipe organ at times full throttle up against a full orchestra at full throttle too. EMI sound engineers have done a great job of capturing the sound of these rather large orchestra works (Symphonies 1-3 plus two un-numbered symphonic works--Symphony in F major "Urbs Roma" and the Symphony in A major.)."

Arvo Pärt: Da pacem
The listener will be both comfortable with and surprised by the changes he's made: his essential style/approach and the beauty of the music remain constant, but Pärt is no whispering new-age poster boy. The performances, by Paul Hillier, the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, and organist Christopher Bowers-Broadbent, do Pärt's ethereal, still, but ever-moving music absolute justice, and the recorded sound is crystal clear.
Reviews
"Exceptional recording."
"exquisitely beautiful and sacred!"
"The music is so pure and heavenly."
"The chamber choir is superb and Salve Regina is 12 minutes of heaven."
"CONCERNING PART'S MUSIC: IS IT THAT THE MUSIC'S RELIGIOUS ESSENCE CONTENT,TOUCH AND CONSOLE US? This collection of shorter sacred works by Arvo Part(b.1935)includes some of his newest works as well as a sprinkling of works from earlier in his career. While some of the newer pieces demonstrate a more colorful and nuanced approach to the setting of texts to music, the influence of early music on his style is a constant presence and returns with renewed strength in these recent compositions. Among the most recent works, the title track 'DA PACEM DOMINE'(Give us peace in our time)2004, is as near-perfect an evocation of text as the composer has ever achieved, and as is usual with Part he does this via more subtle techniques. The first of Part's "TWO SLAVONIC PSALMS" 1984 which is 'Psalm 117' includes an almost dance-like rhythm that is quite untypical of Part's music."
"Truly, the choir, direction, venue, and engineering of this recording lead to some exceptional sounds."
"Nevertheless, this album of vocal music -- Da Pacem -- is perhaps my second favorite Part album of all time. Nine slow tracks of vocal other-wordliness."

Best Te Deum

Arvo Part: Te Deum
Though these pieces are typical of Pärt's style, they seem less bleak than those on previous discs.
Reviews
"I love the Arvo."
"The booklet accompanying the CD carries a generous set of black & whites from the sessions, and the atmosphere and richness of the background come through of the photographs, which show Part collaborating with the Tonu Kaljuste and the performers. When I first heard the Te Deum, it immediately struck me as an exceptional contemporary piece, sprawling and ambitious, rising very gradually from the depths of silence – a full 15 seconds passes before the music becomes audible -- to a climax and then fading away into sacred oblivion. There are monophonic antiphons interspersed among ensemble sections, including a refrain high up in the women’s voices that may be the Te Deum’s signature theme. I found this to be an attractive and easy to listen to work but, based on my many experiences with contemporary music, also a fairly ordinary one, without any of the distinctive ardor of Part’s other pieces. I think of Part’s style as a floating admixture of minimalism, archaic references to ancient music and a fervent mystical Christianity."
"Part's work creates a bridge between Gregorian chant in a monastery and Prokofiev."
"04-21-2015 This ECM CD contains four orchestral works by the contemporary Estonian composer Arvo Part. The Tallinn Chamber orchestra and the Estonian Philharmonic Choir perform, led by Tonu Kaljuste. The total disk time runs a healthy 65:27. ARTISTC IMPRESSIONS AND IDEAS. Shortly after graduating from Indiana University as a Nuclear medicine Technologist, I accepted an offer over the phone to practice in San Jose, for a generous amount of cash, took it and moved my gang West from Chicago. My advise is this------Buy this CD and simply listen to it, closely, and try, very hard not to let your mind wander, but take note of the structure, form and effect of the composer's skills. I feel comfortable saying this, because I am a VERY careful collector, no longer wooed by the "new," "unique and austere voice" that simply MUST he heard."

Christmas
At times, the analog synthesizers used in this 1984 recording sound dated and a little cheesy, particularly on "Deck the Halls" and "Good King Wenceslas." As pleasant and soothing as a Willard Scott birthday wish, Christmas does offer one selection that truly merits "classic" status: the reverent, prayerful, slow-motion interpretation of "Silent Night" ("Stille Nacht") for piano and strings that closes the album--a beautiful and heart-touching work.

Chant Music For The Soul
Its hauntingly simple and hypnotic sound has attracted many followers, and Universal is determined to find the real masters of this music to perform a 21st Century version. "the musical structure of chanting can have a significant and positive physiological impact ... studies also demonstrate that such practices have been shown to lower blood pressure, increase levels of the performance hormone DHEA as well as reducing anxiety and depression." "It's a pretty safe bet that very few of Universal Music's recent signings count Pope Benedict XVI among their fans.

Mozart's Magnificent Voyage
This album features more than 24 excerpts of Mozart's most important and engaging works including Symphony #1, Clarinet Quintet, Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, plus excerpts from Mozart's most famous operas including Figaro, Don Giovanni and the Magic Flute.
Reviews
"Each uses a slightly different style like the Tchaikovsky is an action filled radio play that feels like you are watching a movie with your ears. Some are like listening to a play as it's being acted out and others, like Bach are like a dream sequence of a girl being visited by Bach because she loathes practicing piano so much and Bach encourages her and tell her his story. All the while the music of each composer is expertly crafted into the story."
"We have been doing it for a while, so it is mesmerizing to see how they react when we start playing "Mozart's magnificent Voyage"."
"This is another beautiful Classical Kids production, in which Mozart's son and friends go on an imaginary journey through time and space to gain a new appreciation of his superstar father."
"My daughter and other friends who ride in the carpool are mesmerized by the story and have really developed an appreciation and ear for the music and can even tell Mozart's music apart from Beethoven, etc."
"Wanted her to know the great music for which the instrument is known."
"My four year old grandson really likes this and the Bach one also."
"My six year old daughter has listened to these various titles since she was three and has a love for classical music and can even recognize compositions."
"This series of CD's have captivated my children on many car trips over the last 7 years."
