My bottom line is that I either get a replacement from BACtrack, or I purchase the Trace from Costco and leverage my membership guarantee every time it doesn't pass calibration. The units are expected to last anywhere from 3-5 years (time dependent not based on number of reads). Their calibration service consists of reading the device at high, low and mid BAC standards and comparing it to the acceptable range. According to their customer service, this is a common occurrence after owning the device for three years. At least put an expiration date or some sort of specification that lets your customers know about this or else you'll inevitably have blood on your hands. If it fails to properly operate and there is not safeguard or printed date, then good luck to you buddy!"

If I left it alone for several hours, I could do a test, but then it was unable to do another test. I checked the battery with a volt meter, and the battery didn't look dead at all. To those who have seen the "it was working great the first night, and then it quit on me" reviews, this is what's going on: RELIABILITY: This device seems power hungry, and I have a feeling that the AAA battery can't immediately produce the power it needs, so it needs to harvest the energy slowly while not in use so that it can do a test. The manual does say to wait a few minutes between tests. If you played with it non-stop all night and it won't work anymore on a seemingly good battery, replace the battery and use it properly. I did a proper test, where I had 1 drink unit (1 12oz can of beer in this case) and waited 20min to do a test. If you are still absorbing alcohol in your GI tract, yet have absorbed all of it in your mouth and throat (you ate a big meal before drinking), the reading will be low because you haven't absorbed everything into your system yet (it will continue to rise even if you don't have another drink). You can rinse your mouth and do a test to get a ROUGH idea anytime, but if you want to be sure about your reading, wait 20 minutes."

"Straight out of the box, it was returning BAC values 0.20+ higher than his actual BAC values (as determined by the ER when we freaked out over the insanely high value he blew). We've used it another four or five times and each time it has consistently read scary high numbers (which are WAY higher than anything we've observed in the ER, even when used simultaneously in front of medical staff)."
