Best Antique & Collectible Baseball Cards

When award-winning journalist Dave Jamieson’s parents sold his childhood home a few years ago, he rediscovered a prized boyhood possession: his baseball card collection. In Mint Condition, his fascinating, eye-opening, endlessly entertaining book, Jamieson finds the answer by tracing the complete story of this beloved piece of American childhood. It's a form of megalomania, of course, one famous card collector once said of his hobby—and, as Jamieson explains, there are plenty of people willing to cash in on collectors' obsessions; the secondary market for baseball cards may be as much as a half-billion dollars annually. *Starred Review* Every time a rare baseball card brings a million-dollar price at auction, thousands of aging former collectors wistfully recall shoeboxes full of rookie cards and wonder if they lost a fortune when Mom cleaned out their rooms. Jamieson doesn’t supply lists of valuable cards (there are collectors’ journals for that); rather, he chronicles the history of collectible cards, profiles a few unique collectors, and tracks the development of the hobby and ponders its future. In tracing the history of collectible cards, Jamieson shows the extraordinary lengths to which the early cigarette and card companies went to separate young boys from their money, a penny and then a nickel at a time.

"The chapter on a contemporary baseball card dealer who warns buyers about doctored cards, can be read in a new light, since he recently admitted to trimming the sides of the world's most famous and valuable baseball card."
"I, like the author, jumped into the card-collecting craze in the 80s and 90s (the junk wax era of cards)."
"For me the most interesting thing was, that Mr. Boris Korbel is mentioned there as an entrepreneur in Upper Deck company, his father Josef came from the Czech Republic, where he managed Salvation Army activities until the communist coup in 1948."
"Nostalgic glory days of bubble gum card fifties."
"It was a great walk down memory lane of my youth collecting cards."
"I delayed purchasing it because while I loved collecting baseball cards as a kid I figured there was no way an entire book about baseball cards could be enjoyable. He does so by displaying the historical import of certain card sets (arguing, for example, that cigarettes owe their American success to baseball cards), interviewing those who played key roles in the creative and business growth of baseball cards, and giving us an up-close look at the most eccentric collectors and dealers."
"What a shock it was to see what happened to baseball card collecting when I came back to it in my late 20's."

In celebration of the 100th issue of. Who’s Who in Baseball. —one of the game’s most venerable publications—comes a century's worth of the annual's iconic covers, insightful breakdowns of the players featured on those covers, and informative accounts of the baseball history tied to each year’s issue. The basic cover-design format of red cover background and black type has been used since the 1940s, and the look of this great publication is so recognizable to readers that the editors feel comfortable covering up most of the word BASEBALL in the logo.Douglas B. Lyons is a leading authority on all things baseball. He is the author of Out of Left Field, Curveballs and Screwballs, and Short Hops and Foul Tips, all of which he co-wrote with his brother Jeffrey. Find Best Price at Amazon"What's Good: The book shows the front covers in full size of the 100 years of publication with interesting and striking pictures, especially before the magazine went to the all-red background in the 1950's. The other pages are devoted to brief biographical sketches of the players on the cover, and to very brief summaries of what happened in baseball that year. All of this information is readily available today on websites like Retrosheet or Baseball Reference, but "back in the day" Who's Who was the only source for many of us."
"I've been reading Who's Who in Baseball for over 20 years, buying each issue every season."
"And Clayton Kershaw was the first pitcher since both Bob Gibson & Denny McClain in 1968, to win both the Cy Young & MVP awards in the same season?"
"But as noted elsewhere, there is a lot of white space here that could have been made more use of, as noted elsewhere, by including some of the player register entries from the actual inside of the annuals -- the nuts and bolts and guts of what made Who's Who what it was. Bob Gibson is noted as having the lowest ERA in a single season -- 1.12 in 1968 -- in the 20th century. Commenting on the most famous catch in baseball history, i.e., "The Catch" by Willie Mays in the 1954 World Series, Lyons wrote that he prevented the runners from advancing with his throw after the catch. (But Willie probably prevented Doby from scoring from second with a miraculous throw. That's how deep center field was in the Polo Grounds.)."

The Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards (2012), 21st Edition, contains thousands of card values covering cards from approximately 5,000 sets released between 1863-1981. He also served as publisher, editor, columnist and more with Sports Collectors Digest and a number of other sports hobby titles.
