The Origins of Christmas
When was Christmas first celebrated? How did December 25 become the date for the feast? serves well to dispel myths, explain legends, and name key figures for any reader interested in the subject. But best of all—what a splendid antidote to the commercialism of the Christmas season to be reminded of the true meaning of this happy, holy day. One of the many pleasures this book has to offer is the chance to recognize familiar faces--whether those of Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar or those of the ox and the ass--and to learn more about where they come from and why they are now so much a part of our understanding of Christmas. The state and breadth of the evidence, moreover, would seem to make it impossible to convey a sense of the holiday's beginnings without misleading oversimplification. In The Origins of Christmas , however, Joseph F. Kelly does an outstanding job of making difficult material accessible to a non-academic audience, and of giving a perfectly clear account of what in less certain hands would surely be murky. Kelly's selection of passages to illustrate and explain the holiday's development is exemplary, and even the reader with no background in the Bible, early Christianity, or the ancient and medieval worlds, will know exactly what is going on and why at each point in his book. With its colorful binding, interesting illustrations, wide coverage of topics, and modest cost, the book is a valuable source of information and makes a fine Advent-Christmas gift. serves well to dispel myths, explain legends, and name key figures for any reader interested in the subject.? The Deal of the Century: The Breakup of AT&T
From boardroom to courtroom, Steve Coll untangles the myriad threads of this complex and critical case and gives readers “an excellent behind-the-scenes look” at the human drama involved in the remaking of an entire industry ( The. Philadelphia Inquirer ). An edifying account of a seminal antitrust case, The Deal of the Century also manages to be a moving story.” — The New York Times Book Review “This is the story of how the bad guys finally lost. Superbly reported and smoothly written.” — The Washington Post “An excellent behind-the-scenes look—exposing warts on both sides of the case—at the legal wranglings between AT&T and the government.” — The Philadelphia Inquirer “Read this book and learn how the world works.” —Andrew Tobias, bestselling author of The Only Investment Guide You’ll Ever Need “Crafted with color and drama . A near-definitive reconstruction of this consequential conflict.” — Kirkus Reviews “This exposé lends welcome clarity to the mass confusion that accompanied the divestment of AT&T. Coll’s penetrating analysis of this shameful courtroom and boardroom drama evidences the fact that both the general public and the judiciary were exploited and duped by all factions.” — Booklist Steve Coll is a staff writer at the New Yorker , the dean of the Columbia Journalism School, and the bestselling author of seven books. Coll’s other books include New York Times Notable Book The Deal of the Century (1998); Ghost Wars (2004), winner of the Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction; The Bin Ladens (2009), winner of the PEN/John Kenneth Galbraith Award for Nonfiction; and Private Empire (2012), winner of the Financial Times and McKinsey Business Book of the Year Award.
Reviews
"This book reads like a John Grisham novel, except that all of it really happened."
"If you want to understand the telecom history, this is something you you should read."
"I was born after the breakup of AT&T so, aside from hearing that there was a breakup of AT&T, I knew nothing of the incident nor how the phone system was prior to the breakup."
"The book also offers insight for future business leaders, bosses and company owners - what really got AT&T's goose fried was the company's failure, beginning in the late 1960's to provide decent telephone service to customers. In the midst of all these unhappy AT&T business telephone customers, an entrepreneur named William McGowan bought a controlling interest in the company which would later be known as MCI Worldcom, and then he began a series of civil lawsuits against AT&T for the right to provide a better telephone service to his own customers."
"They and others are vividly portrayed along with the bureaucratic clash of swords in the three branches of government; Judge Green, Congress with Peter Rodino and Tim Wirth and Bill Baxter, the anti-trust head at Justice in Reagan's first administration."
"It is extremely well-written and the author has taken pains to present an unbiased viewpoint."
"If anyone wants to know the history of AT&T - which is fascinating because it covers so much of our innovation in the 20th century, this book is awesome."
"Currently reading book and am enjoying it so far."

Negotiating for Success: Essential Strategies and Skills
First, the book not only covers negotiation concepts, but also provides practical actions you can take in future negotiations. The book also includes (1) a tool you can use to assess your negotiation style; (2) examples of “decision trees,” which are useful in calculating your alternatives if your negotiation is unsuccessful; (3) a three-part strategy for increasing your power during negotiations; (4) a practical plan for analyzing your negotiations based on your reservation price, stretch goal, most-likely target, and zone of potential agreement; (5) clear guidelines on ethical standards that apply to negotiations; (6) factors to consider when deciding whether you should negotiate through an agent; (7) psychological tools you can use in negotiations—and traps to avoid when the other side uses them; (8) key elements of contract law that arise during negotiations; and (9) a checklist of factors to use when you evaluate your performance as a negotiator. Similarly, the books on contract law tend to focus on the legal requirements for a contract to be valid, thus giving short shrift to the negotiation process that precedes the contract and to the performance that follows. This book, in contrast to others, covers the entire negotiation process in chronological order beginning with your decision to negotiate and continuing through the evaluation of your performance as a negotiator. A business executive in one of the negotiation seminars the author teaches as a University of Michigan professor summarized negotiation as follows: “Life is negotiation!” No one ever stated it better. GEORGE J. SIEDEL is the Williamson Family Professor of Business Administration and the Thurnau Professor of Business Law at the University of Michigan.

How to Remove ALL Negative Items from your Credit Report
No more paying top dollar to attorneys and credit repair companies.
Reviews
"Almost all of the books that fall into the “credit repair” category here on Amazon provide essentially the same information, which is usually very general and easy to find online for free by searching Google. The reason all of these books contain this same information is because the process for filing disputes is easily learned online. Having said that, I can say that the information contained in this book is laid out in an easy to understand, concise fashion that most readers will be able to easily digest. A short introduction where the author describes his or her background in the financial planning business (for over 18 years), as well as experience as a mortgage broker. During this time it is was in the author's interest to ensure that prospective clients would have a high enough credit score to purchase his or her products, so a leap into the world of self-directed learning began, and the author became an expert at repairing (or building, or rebuilding) her potential clients' credit scores. I believe that this means the content of this section is equal to other available choices, however I feel that the way the information is organized and presented in the book can save time over doing independent research. The book then goes into a description of debt validation, a process when you are dealing directly with collection agencies and want to force them to comply with the law. It can take a long time to fix your credit, so get started right now so you can be ready for the future."

The Chickenshit Club: Why the Justice Department Fails to Prosecute Executives
From Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist Jesse Eisinger, “a fast moving, fly-on-the-wall, disheartening look at the deterioration of the Justice Department and the Securities and Exchange Commission…It is a book of superheroes” ( San Franscisco Review of Books ). These revealing looks provide context for the evolution of the Justice Department’s approach to pursuing corporate criminals through the early 2000s and into the Justice Department’s approach to pursuing corporate criminals through the early 2000s and into the Justice Department of today, including the prosecutorial fiascos, corporate lobbying, trial losses, and culture shifts that have stripped the government of the will and ability to prosecute top corporate executives. "...brave and elegant...a fearless reporter...Eisinger's important and profound book takes no prisoners..." — The Washington Post “An absorbing financial history, a monumental work of journalism… a first-rate study of the federal bureaucracy. It’s also an expansive parable: of righteousness and compromise, overreach and underreach, excess, deceit, greed—the whole American show.” —Bloomberg Businessweek “Smart, deeply sourced, and full of insider tidbits about legal stars like Comey, judge Jed Rakoff, and former SEC chair Mary Jo White.” —Fortune "A well-reported tale..." — The Financial Times "That the Wall Street titans who blew up the financial system suffered little more than slight reductions in their bonuses only reinforced the perception that the “system” is 'rigged'—with the consequences we know only too well. "— Bryan Burrough, co-author of Barbarians at the Gate and author of Days of Rage “Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist Eisinger does a masterful job of assembling this riveting dossier of the legal scholars, jurists, and elected officials who played a role in turning the U.S. into a nation in which white-collar criminals are celebrated for their cunning instead of incarcerated for their offenses.” —Booklist, Starred Review “In a spare, elegant and unrelenting narrative, Jesse Eisinger's The Chickenshit Club tackles one of the biggest remaining mysteries about the 2008 financial crisis: Why the American justice system failed miserably in its responsibility to hold Wall Street accountable for its unforgivable behavior in exacerbating the near-meltdown of the global banking system. — The San Francisco Review of Books Jesse Eisinger is a Pulitzer Prize-winning senior reporter at ProPublica .
Reviews
"The Chickens--t Club is a fast moving, fly on the wall, disheartening look at the deterioration of the Justice Department and the Securities and Exchange Commission, written sympathetically, thoroughly, but mostly - engagingly. They operate on their own, independent of the Justice Department, their dotted line overseers. They turned up clues, did forensic accounting, and turned (“flipped”) lower level criminals to get the executives. With George W. Bush, Justice deteriorated under Secretary Alberto Gonzalez, who was forced to resign, and the SEC deteriorated under Christopher Cox, whose intent appeared to be to simply let it collapse from inactivity. They have been battered by the collapse of Arthur Andersen, which put a lot of employees on the street, and has given us ridiculous arguments over “too big to fail” and markets that “self-regulate”. The most notable is probably (Judge) Jed Rakoff, who began at the SEC and as a judge, had the temerity to refuse settlements between the government and the corporate criminals, because they were superficial, trivial, insufficient, and demonstrated no sense of justice whatsoever. As a result, settlements now avoid approval by the courts. The final impression is that there is an absolute rainbow of crime constantly glowing over corporate America."
"James Comey gave Eisinger the title for his book when he took over as prosecutor for the Southern District of New York under a newly elected George W. Bush. Eisinger says that the very moment Comey gave that speech may have represented the apogee of prosecutorial zeal on the part of the financial enforcement regime. Even sadder, there is nobody looking out for the interests of the taxpayer, who is the pigeon of last resort, picking up the tab when the abuses that have been covered up by financial shenanigans finally cause a massive collapse."
"Like a lot of people, I found the 2008 meltdown pretty hard to understand. Jesse's book cut through all the jargon and the purposefully dense legalese and explained the financial scandal in clear, understandable terms that have opened my eyes."
"I knew that corporate executives were not found to jail for obvious felonies, this book explains why and how the government became so weak that it didn’t even try to go after individuals for a while and had low success when it restarted."
"eye opener....james coomey is in here with a passion for justice."
"Although I have not finished this book, what I have read of it is excellent--good information well presented."
"LOVED this book!"
"Eisinger describes a core problem with our criminal justice system and some of the reasons behind the disparity in the administration of justice in America."

"This author's strength is her ability to teach, and like all good teachers, she has learned to tell her audience what she's going to tell them, then tell it to them, and finally tell them what she's told them. She has a talent for breaking down the complicated financial concepts that most of us find terrifying into simple, easily-digested, non-threatening bites. I once paid a higher rate for automobile insurance although I have a perfect driving record and didn't owe anyone a dime. Shopping around for a lower interest rate (for a mortgage, say) won't "ding" your credit score, but renting a car might, IF you pay with a debit card. Whether you're trying to stay out of a hole or already deeply in one, this book will give you hope and the skills you need to improve your financial life."

The Smartest Guys in the Room: The Amazing Rise and Scandalous Fall of Enron
Today, Enron is the biggest business story of our time, and Fortune senior writers Bethany McLean and Peter Elkind are the new Woodward and Bernstein. It reveals as never before major characters such as Ken Lay, Jeff Skilling, and Andy Fastow, as well as lesser known players like Cliff Baxter and Rebecca Mark. Their prose is effortless, like a sprinter floating down the track.” —USA Today “Well-reported and well-written.” —Warren Buffett Bethany McLean and Peter Elkind collaborated on this book when they both were Fortune senior writers.
Reviews
"Of course, it's not fiction, and even if one assumes that the authors may have exaggerated or left out some facts that might have made the villains look less evil, it's still a "credibly incredible" book."
"The companys legacy is riddled in numerous bad decisions and short sided approaches to running a business that it should always be remembered as am example of the damage bad management can have on not just their own company but their clients and business partners."
"If you ever wondered how excessive greed and unethical behavior on this scale could happen without someone opening their mouth, I invite you to read this book to see just how easy it was for those operating in grey areas to manipulate data and facts to reap huge profits while convincing themselves and others that they “technically “ weren’t doing anything wrong."
"Many of the main characters at Enron have personalities as big someone written for fiction, so the book is actually fairly entertaining despite the dry and factual subject matter."
"Enron was a high wire act, a company on steroids, an innovator, obsessed on making deals and its stock price."
"This is an excellent account of an enterprise that became increasingly dependent on stock valuation for the appearance of innovation and profitability, even to the point of creating `independent' enterprises (actually controlled by corporate insiders) that assumed responsibility for losing ventures and kept debt off the books. The Essays of Warren Buffett: Lessons for Corporate America, Fourth Edition
The fourth edition of The Essays of Warren Buffett: Lessons for Corporate America celebrates its twentieth anniversary. Warren’s 50th anniversary retrospective, in what Bill Gates called Warren’s best letter ever, on conglomerates and Berkshire’s future without Buffett; Charlie Munger’s 50th anniversary essay on “The Berkshire System”; Warren’s definitive defense of Berkshire’s no-dividend practice; and Warren’s best advice on investing, whether in apartments, farms, or businesses. “Cunningham has done a truly commendable job distilling and organizing the essence of Buffett's letter to Berkshire shareholders...While the essays reviewed in the latest edition of this volume range across a broad assortment of topics, for most readers the most valuable part of this book will be Buffett's lessons and insights on investing. He's great at homespun metaphor, but behind those catchy phrases is a reservoir of financial acumen that's generally considered the best of his generation. For example, in an essay on CEO stock options, he writes, "Negotiating with one's self seldom produces a barroom brawl." There are uncountable gems of financial wisdom to be harvested from these essays, taken from the annual reports he writes for Berkshire Hathaway, his holding company. Just to pick one more, here's a now-famous line about those he competes with when making stock-market investments: "What could be more advantageous in an intellectual contest--whether it be chess, bridge, or stock selection--than to have opponents who have been taught that thinking is a waste of energy?"
