The Legends Club: Dean Smith, Mike Krzyzewski, Jim Valvano, and an Epic College Basketball Rivalry
The riveting inside story of college basketball's fiercest rivalry among three coaching legends—University of North Carolina's Dean Smith, Duke's Mike Krzyzewski, and North Carolina State's Jim Valvano—by the king of college basketball writers, #1 New York Times bestseller John Feinstein On March 18, 1980, the immensely powerful Duke basketball program announced the hiring of its new coach—the man who would resurrect the team, restore glory to Duke, and defeat the legendary Dean Smith, who coached down the road at UNC Chapel Hill and had turned UNC into a powerhouse. The hiring didn't raise as many eyebrows, but with the exuberant Valvano on board, two new coaches were now in place to challenge Dean Smith—and the most sensational competitive decade in history was about to unfold. Feinstein pulls back the curtain on the recruiting wars, the intensely personal competition that wasn't always friendly, the enormous pressure and national stakes, and the battle for the very soul of college basketball allegiance in a hot-bed area. "The book is one of [John Feinstein's] best, a beguilingly personal, sometimes heartbreaking look at the psychic cost of doing battle in America’s most brutally, nakedly competitive (and actual) arenas. "Feinstein entertains readers with fair, objective observations based on fact and his unique inside access gained not only through years of his coverage but also through many new interviews with former players, coaches and administrators...In a famous speech before he died, Valvano implored all of us to attempt to do three things each day: laugh, think and cry. His longstanding relationships with the principals give the book its insider appeal; his history with each man goes back decades, and the intersecting, layered looks at each are built on firsthand knowledge...Funny and smart." He is the author of A Season on the Brink and A Good Walk Spoiled , both #1 New York Times bestsellers and Last Shot , which won the Edgar Allen Poe Award for mystery writing in the Young Adult category.
Reviews
"I think that anyone interested in basketball would like this book, and especially anyone interested in college basketball should absolutely love this book."
"Anyone who is a fan of college basketball and especially the long rivalries in the ACC...this is a GREAT GREAT read."
"He tells the story of the three ACC basketball coaches' national accomplishments in an enjoyable and interesting way. Also, this book should not be viewed as taking a critical look at big-time college basketball - it doesn't, and I don't think Feinstein would ever claim that it does."
"Brought back memories of the day Dean Smith brought the Tar Heels into Providence, RI to play the Friars during my undergraduate days and PC pulling out an upset win just after a 35 inch blizzard had paralyzed the city."
"Feinstein's first book established his reputation and began his long and lucrative career as a sports journalist when he exposed the innermost secrets of the Indiana basketball program and Bob Knight's coaching techniques (also earning Knight's lifelong animosity)."
"A well written book filled with informative stories about 3 of the favorite basketball coaches in N.C., how they related to one another, & how they competed against one another."
"Basketball is a significant element of life in " Carolina " and Feinstein's book brings the historic perspective to life including players, coaches and administrations."
"It will make you think."

Eleven Rings: The Soul of Success
• Learned the secrets of mindfulness and team chemistry while playing for the champion New York Knicks in the 1970s. • Managed Michael Jordan, the greatest player in the world, and got him to embrace selflessness, even if it meant losing a scoring title. • Forged successful teams out of players of varying abilities by getting them to trust one another and perform in sync. • Inspired Dennis Rodman and other “uncoachable” personalities to devote themselves to something larger than themselves. • Transformed Kobe Bryant from a rebellious teenager into a mature leader of a championship team. This book is full of revelations: about fascinating personalities and their drive to win; about the wellsprings of motivation and competition at the highest levels; and about what it takes to bring out the best in ourselves and others. To a casual fan, meditation, Buddhism, and Native American spirituality may seem an odd mix of resources with which to motivate highly paid, often egocentric professional athletes. "— The New York Times Book Review "Part sports memoir, part New Age spirit quest, part pseudo-management tract...But the primary thing with Jackson — as with all the old bards, who were also known for repeating themselves — is the voice.

"Pros: - lots of topics. - chapters are well-categorized and information within them make sense. - good for any sport (though it does have somewhat of a basketball lean). - lots of good info-graphics, tables, checklists, pictures, etc so you are not just reading listlessly. - good information for all levels of coaching. - the list goes on and on - this is quite possibly the best book I have bought from Amazon so far. Cons: - Big (over 500 pages). - Would like to see more info in the "practice as games (paraphrase)" section. - Some information in the supplement breakdown is contrary to the information I am familiar with. ** Added Bonus **. Apparently this book is also the curriculum for a college course, so whether you are just thinking about buying it and want more information, or you already own it and want a "quick reference" there is a very good support site here: [...]. I have read several books on coaching, and this is by far, the most comprehensive."
"The book took awhile to arrive and by the time it did, it stank, if what I'm not sure? My guess was that it was stored in a meth lab or some warehouse. I aired it out in the sun and fresh air over a period of 3 months, meticulously turning each page every few days, and smelling each page to ensure the smell was gone."
"This should be required reading for all coaches, sports instructors, Martial Artists and parents."
"ordered this for a class I took, great condition."
"The book is set up much like a field manual with tasks, conditions and standards, which can be use as a basis for situations and cross referencing in multiple sports."
"Contacted amazon was told I had to spend another 29 dollars to purchase paperback to take text and finish my class."
"The book came in great condition."

More Than a Game
More than a Game is the odyssey of Jackson's journey—from New York Knick and world champion, to CBA coach, to six-time Chicago Bulls world champion, to this year's L.A. Lakers world champion—and the lessons in leadership he learned each step of the way. Even though Jackson is the star here, he gives little attention to his years with the Bulls (covered in his earlier book Sacred Hoops). It seems a somewhat perfunctory treatment of a surprising season, until the book's true (and higher) purpose slowly becomes clear: it is a magnificent tribute to Tex Winter's triangle offense, the perfect scheme. Maverick (1975), also written with Rosen (Scandals of '51), covered his offbeat life as a player with the two-time champion New York Knicks, while Sacred Hoops (1999) focused on how he used his Triangle offense and personal "Zen Christian" beliefs in coaching the Chicago Bulls to six NBA championships during the 1990s. The primary voice is Jackson's, however, and the major interest to most readers will be his behind-the-scenes account of the Lakers' successful season and the tenuous teaming of stars Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant.

"FANTASTIC BOOK - the story of LIFE and COACHING WAY of PHIL JACKSON and His best FRIEND Charley ROSEN."
"***MET PHIL JACKSON IN CHICAGO & MET MICHAEL JORDON ON THE SAME NIGHT***MY HEART WAS BEATING SO FAST, I COULD BARELY BREATHE***IT WAS MORE THAN A GAME THAT NIGHT***IT WAS A FANTASY NIGHT***IT WAS ON MY DAUGHTER'S LIST OF THINGS SHE WANTED TO DO BEFORE SHE DIED WAS TO SEE THE CHICAGO BULLS PLAY***WE HAD NO IDEA WERE GOING TO HAVE 4th ROW SEATS & BE ABLE TO READ DENNIS RODMAN'S TATOOS***AFTER THE GAME, WE GOT TO THEIR SWEATY HANDS& GET THEIR AUTOGRAPHS****(YES, THEY BEAT WASHINGTON)***PHIL JACKSON IS ONE MAN WHO WAS BORN TO BE A COACH****."
"The book meanders around several themes - Phil's youth in the game, the Triangle Offense, Phil's coaching career prior to the Bulls, his Lakers first coaching season, and Charley's experiences throughout."
"The kids coming from college don't know how to play basketball and are tremendously self centered (not their fault)."
"I found Roland Lazenby's Mindgames much more readable and entertaining, even though I got tired of reading about the conflicts Bulls' VP Jerry Krause had with Jackson, Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen (scattered throughout 100 pages of the 400 page book)."
"Gives a great insight into the mind of Phil Jackson and also how to become a great leader."
"THIS BOOK SHARES MANY INSIGHTS INTO THE LAKERS CHAMPIONSHIP RUN,AND ALSO THE CHAMPION CHICAGO BULLS, AND PHIL'S VIEW OF MANY OF THE PLAYERS, TEAMS AND COACHES IN THE NBA."
"The book alternates chapters (written by) Rosen and Jackson- which is jarring. You read a chapter, you get into the flow of the writing style, then, once you finish the chapter: BOOM."

"Great book-----and I'm not a basketball fan!!!"
"As a man who went to college during the fab five era, it was a cool read, and walk down memory lane of a time when I couldn't trade in my basketball short shorts, for a pair of the fab five long baggy shorts fast enough, these 5 kids really did touch and change the worlds of so many people!!!"

Leading with the Heart: Coach K's Successful Strategies for Basketball, Business, and Life
In his more than twenty years coaching the Blue Devils, Coach Mike Krzyzewski has made his program the most admired in the nation, with back-to-back national championships in '91, '92, and again in 2001, and ten Final Four appearances since 1986. Thus, in Leading with the Heart , Krzyzewski reviews the lessons he's learned as basketball coach at Duke University, and tries to universalize them so they translate to any leadership position. Between the quotes and the bullet points are anecdotes about Duke basketball games and (occasionally) Krzyzewski's life outside basketball. What you come away with is an understanding of why Krzyzewski is a great basketball coach, why former Duke assistants such as Tommy Amaker and Quin Snyder are probably going to become great basketball coaches, and how anyone who's currently a coach can become a better coach. Duke basketball coach Krzyzewski, today's most successful NCAA coach, reviews significant games and key events in his career in addition to offering advice to coaches, players and everyone trying to do better in life. Although he occasionally refers to a coach as a "leader," for the most part he leaves it up to readers to connect the dots between his coaching strategies and useful business strategies.
