The action intensified throughout the remainder of the book, and one is allowed a rare glimpse into the mind of Il Duce - Benito Mussolini - plus the inner workings of the German High Command. Pino Lello witnesses atrocities he wishes he could forget but keeps soldiering on...wisely... Just a gripping and harrowing Kindle First selection which I feel is the best one I have read."
"Set in Italy during the last two years of the second World War, this story follows the life of a remarkable young man, Pino Lella, who finds himself assigned as the driver of one of the most powerful Nazi officials in Italy. He accompanies this General throughout northern Italy as the war deteriorates and comes to a violent and tragic end. A very worthwhile story that author Mark Sullivan was lucky enough to learn of, then putting several years of research into piecing together as many of the details as he could."
"He takes us deep inside the love story of his discovery, the unknown hero, Pino Lella, and he crafts an epic tale set against the backdrop of Nazi-occupied Milan and the Italian Alps during World War II that is as intimate and tragic as it is thought-provoking and triumphant."

"Being a son of privaledge with a close knit extended family, devoted equally to their Catholic Church, children's education and safety, their top shelf leather purse shop in the fashion district and their love of good food, wine and classical music."
And as he lives under the constant threat of arrest, he wrestles with the guilt of putting Marlene Wiese, a married nurse and the love of his life, in danger as they collaborate on Kolbe’s clandestine work. He has worked as a builder, in sales, and in bars and now lives in Hamburg as an author and teacher of creative writing.

Find Best Price at Amazon"Mr. Wood (spy code name) risks his own life and quite a few others along the way with absolute selflessness and yet he thrills at the thought of a tryst with a woman he barely knows. I chose a 4 star rating because at times the writing was somewhat cliche, and for some reason I get easily annoyed when overly descriptive scenery pops up in a book that I want some action to keep the pages turning."
"Fritz Kolbe, an important spy in WWII delivered top-secret information to the Americans in Switzerland, risking his life while avoiding the nationalistic frenzy of the Third Reich. Fritz Kolbe among other things, is responsible for destroying strictly secret documents and using his position to pass information on embarking on a dangerous double life as the Allies’ most important spy."
"Fairly long book, so I had to take a break part way through this book, but it never got dull. But I was also getting stiff and hungry, so I ate lunch and played with my dog to relax. I enjoyed the book almost enough to rate the book five stars, but I decided that it would not be fair to readers who were trying to choose between this book and another one that interested them based on reader reviews."
"As the pages wind down, one has a sinking feeling, knowing that the protagonist, Fritz Kolbe, will survive, but that he will lose the love of his mistress, Marlene, and suspecting he will not have a glorious reunion with the daughter, Katrin, he left in South Africa because he could not otherwise protect her. Fritz never accepts the savagery of the Nazi regime, never joins the party, but, by competence and guile, collects secrets that he passes along to the Americans."

Growing up, she lost her mother at the age of 10; lived in Paris during her coming out years and experienced the revolutionary fervor there. Even though she was constantly pregnant (she ended up giving birth to 11 children), managing her husband's plantations as well as her father's, she ended up being a pivotal part of Thomas Jefferson's life. The only issue I have with this book is that it does not cover her later years as much as I had hoped for."
"It follows her to Paris not long after, where she accompanies her father, who is the fledgling nation's representative in France. Through it all, she is there for her father as he travels back and forth from Washington City -- later D.C. -- serving a variety of roles before running for president and serving two terms. Woven through the narrative is Jefferson's relationship with the beautiful slave Sally Hemings, believed to be the half-sister of Jefferson's late wife and bearing a strong resemblance to her."
