Waking Up White: and Finding Myself in the Story of Race
Waking Up White's personal narrative is designed to work well as a rapid read, a book group book, or support reading for courses exploring racial and cultural issues. Irving's focus on the mechanics of racism operating in just one life -- her own -- may lead white readers to reconsider the roots of their own perspectives -- and their role in dismantling old myths. -- Van Jones , author, Rebuild The Dream, The Green Collar Economy: How One Solution Can Fix Our Two Biggest Problems; President, Rebuild The Dream; Co-host, CNN Crossfire "Waking up White is a brutally honest, unflinching exploration of race and personal identity, told with heart by a truly gifted storyteller. It's such a raw, honest portrait .... Irving's experience on display - warts and all - will help white people, who haven't noticed the role systemic privilege has played in their lives, start to see the world in a new way." Irving's personal and moving tale takes us on an adventure to a world utterly new to her as she wakes up to the reality of how, without her knowledge or active pursuit, she lives in a society which is set up to reward her at the expense of people of color.

"Many college students seem shockingly ok with forgetting half of what they spent so much money to learn, I for one spent the money to know and remember what I have been taught."
"He does not sugar coat the need for initial effort spent learning the systems, and does not belabor the obvious need & benefits of practice. AFTER finishing this book a little extra reading in the subject area, proved that without using the more commonly recognized terms, Mr. Horsley covered many areas of value including the "Major System" for handling the memorization of numbers based on a method of translating numbers into sounds. We all learn differently, & for this reason Mr. Horsley's book is a decent springboard from which to launch oneself into the act of mental improvement. The words created by the system he introduces in Chapter 12, can be used to create "Peg words" that upon creation are automatically organised in order."
"He also shows you/helps with examples on how you can use what you have learned earlier in the book to jump right in with both feet and start and work to improve your memory right way."
"This is a short monograph on memory techniques."
"The author makes it very clear that in order to change your same old dull routine, do something different."

Kim, fifteen, raises $10,000 so she can move from Oklahoma to Finland; Eric, eighteen, trades his high-achieving Minnesota suburb for a booming city in South Korea; and Tom, seventeen, leaves a historic Pennsylvania village for Poland. Amanda Ripley, an American journalist, seeks to answer such questions in The Smartest Kids in the World , her fine new book about the schools that are working around the globe ….Ms. “[ The Smartest Kids in the World is] a riveting new book….Ripley’s policy recommendations are sensible and strong….The American school reform debate has been desperately in need of such no-nonsense advice, which firmly puts matters of intellect back at the center of education where they belong.” (The Daily Beast). “Gripping….Ripley's characters are fascinating, her writing style is accessible, and her observations are fresh….If you're interested in how to improve public schools, read Ripley's book today.” (The Huffington Post ). “In riveting prose...this timely and inspiring book offers many insights into how to improve America’s mediocre school system.” (Publishers Weekly, starred review ). “This book gives me hope that we can create education systems of equity and rigor—if we heed the lessons from top performing countries and focus more on preparing teachers than on punishing them." By drawing on experiences, successes, and failures in education systems in the highest-performing countries across the globe, Amanda Ripley lays out a course for what we must do to dramatically improve our nation's schools.” (Michelle Rhee, Founder and CEO of StudentsFirst ). Those stunned parents and teachers in New York State and elsewhere would do well to read this book first if they are inclined to blame their children’s/students’ poor results on a new test.” (OECD “Education Today” Blog ). “[Ripley] is a compelling storyteller who deftly plaits humorous anecdotes and hard data to whip you in the face with her findings.” (Kristen Levithan Brain, Child Magazine).

"I had long heard that Finland’s education was unique and crashing through testing markers, but until this book I didn’t really understand why."
"This is a balanced examination of current research and interviews with education experts around the world - INCLUDING the students so often excluded."
"Amanda Ripley Pulls no punches in her reporting on education systems."
"By looking at teacher training, student expectations (from the students themselves and their parents and school administrators), school spending and other criteria (think expensive high school football programs), Ms. Ripley paints an interesting picture of the stark differences between the schools here in the United States and schools in countries where they get it right."
"I generally dread the books on pedagogy and education that get handed to me, and this was no exception - until I actually started reading."
"Great book."
"It helps start an important discussion about schools in America and gives us pause for self reflection, both as parents and a system."

"Braun's lessons are memorable, accessible, and powerful. “Braun combines his laid-back storytelling style with simple yet sage advice….The Promise of a Pencil is engaging, instructive and inspiring reading for anyone who wants to change his or her life, change the world, or simply feel better about humanity.” ( Success Magazine ). "“The Promise of a Pencil: How an Ordinary Person can Create Extraordinary Change” is an inspiring masterpiece written by Adam Braun, the founder of the Pencils of Promise, a non-profit organization which builds school in developing countries like Ghana and Laos. I can easily read it while I am waiting for the bus or classes and it does not add to the weight of my backpack which is usually heavy and full of my textbooks, files and a laptop that I carry everyday to classes. After all, it is an amazing masterpiece!"
"At this point in my life, I didn't think any book could expand or strengthen the strong purpose I feel for trying to make a dent in the universe through social good, big dreams and going off the beaten trail. A favorite quote of mine: "The single most powerful element of youth is that you don't have the life experience to know what can't be done.""
"In this beautiful story he presents how he found his life purpose and how he made the decision to listen to his inner voice and do what he felt he had to do against all the people who tried to put him down, it seemed like he needed no validation from anyone he was determined to impact the world in the best possible way, expand his vision and keep growing. These are some of the mantras that I felt more connection with: Mantra 11 - Speak the Language of the Person You Want to Become: I felt inspired by these lines "...the more we speak in the voice of our most inspirational self, the closer we pull our future into our present...". Mantra 27 - Vulnerability is Vital: My big take on this mantra is Accountability, starting with the words you use, the promises or commitments you make no matter how small or big they are just do what you said you would do. Mantra 28 - Listen to Your Echoes: One way that I look at this mantra is that sometimes when we put our best effort, energy, dedication and discipline in doing something meaningful we can inspire other people (e.g. own kids) and we may not know it until we notice it in their words or actions, this could start with a very small act of compassion on the street."
