"I just went through this book to put together my 8th grade son's curriculum plan for the year. The crazy backwords crap they tried shoving down his throat (aka COMMON CORE NONSENSE) in our California public school system left him still confused and, though he passed the class with a B, he still feels like none of it is 'clear' in his head, and he gets re-confused when problems he hasn't done in a while are re-introduced (a problem he NEVER had before the common core movement). This is a GATE kid who knew his ABCs at 18 months old, and reads 3 grade levels ahead, and common core math confuses him (and me, I'm a college grade who LOVES algebra and even I don't get common core lol). So we are starting over, homeshooling this year, with good old fashioned regular old MATH, and this is PERFECT! A couple of times we ran into their way looking different than our way, which we thought was easier (like greatest common factor, in unit one-review), so we did it our way. :). If he comes to a section that's a new concept or difficult for him, I'll sit down with him and we'll do the problems together but on our own separate papers. The lessons have a page that explains the concept in words, then gives several examples."

"Now that I've talked with others who took a similar course at another school (with a different book), I know that my knowledge of Linear Algebra (learned from this book) is pretty good."
"I had to read and reread chapters and supplement with various sites and videos (Khan Academy helped)."
"it is easy to follow and the example problems are very indicative of the homework problems that follow."
"The text does a good job of explaining most of the concepts clearly, but some of the proofs are very bare, and sometimes I'm left wondering WHY something works."
"Good book."
"I liked the study guide, but the "see the text" responses and failing to answer T/F questions was absolutely annoying (although I saw Lay's purpose b/c I did learn more by looking it up, it was just time-consuming)."

Best Abstract Algebra

A Book of Abstract Algebra: Second Edition
He introduces many advanced and peripheral subjects in the plentiful exercises, which are accompanied by ample instruction and commentary and offer a wide range of experiences to students at different levels of ability.
Reviews
"His introduction is excellent and it's interesting to realize that the algebra we learn in elementary school is just one out of about 200 algebras that mathematicians have analyzed."
"I need books that go at a nice relaxed pace, and which give me plenty of opportunities to work interesting problems. Pinter excels at breaking down complicated concepts into very small, practically painless steps. The index is pretty crummy, and the many sections of exercises are not labeled in a way that lets you see what subjects are being developed."
"Pinter's book covers a lot of ground, but it is aimed squarely at students (including autodidacts) who have the beginnings of what is nebulously referred to as 'mathematical maturity'."
"This is first time in my life I can read a math book as fast as reading a fiction. I feel I will come back to those books I gave up a long time ago."
"A rigorous presentation that reads more like an interesting essay that a math text, yet it is a thorough summary of the subject."
"I am able to navigate these pretty easily and have not discovered many true mistakes (on the part of the author that is). A real novice could easily get confused and may not be able to mentally correct some typos on the fly. Also navigation through the book is different than the typical and not as efficient but once I learned what was needed it is tolerable."
"That being said, the book is very clear, I understand all the steps, exercises are great, not-too-hard-not-too-boring, the author really writes well and it makes you feel like you have a tutor with you helping you move forward."
