Best Fish & Aquarium Care
Book presents scientific information that hobbyists can use to set up and maintain successful planted freshwater aquaria. I am delighted with the tack taken in which you provide scientific information for hobbyists to make sound aquarium management decisions. The best part is that, in the practical setup section, the author tells exactly what to do, in simple terms, in lists of instructions that one can read and understand. She trained as a microbiologist and spent many years doing medical research at the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill).

"But, overall I now have wider knowledge of why plants are not just a decoration, but a must have if you want a successful hobby."
"Just one hour skimming through this book convinced me I had a lot more to learn, especially about low maintenance planted tanks. This book is useful to both low maintenance planted tank enthusiasts and the average hobbyist."
"But this is where scientific knowledge and research meet with practical aquarium management. It's like having a biochemist sitting next to you and looking at your aquarium while talking about it and making recommendations."
"Seriously good book and great information."
"Still reading it, but so far, it's perfect for a serious planted aquarium enthusiast."
"but otherwise it's a great read and goes into details about almost every aspect about aquatic planted set ups."
"Okay, it's not quite that simple, and aquariums have a lot to do with fish and other aquatic creatures too, but these are not more important than the plants. And I assure you that the more you put Diana Walstad's principles and instructions to work, the more joy you will take in your aquarium."

Lieutenant Eric Pedersen purchased the bodacious mare and renamed her Reckless, for the Recoilless Rifles Platoon, Anti-Tank Division, of the 5th Marines she’d be joining. Reckless Memorial Monument at the National Museum of the Marine Corps, completed in July 2013, and now spurring the creation of a second memorial at Camp Pendleton, California, where Reckless lived out the rest of her days. It is a story of Marines and their horse. These two traits, combined with a special horse we now know as Reckless, produced a legacy and a legend that lives today in Marine Corps lore. ), Former Assistant Commandant of the United States Marine Corps and Marine Commanding General in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm during the Gulf War. Reckless: America's War Horse, Robin Hutton has masterfully crafted the definitive story of Reckless, the great little Korean mare who so boldly served alongside Marines of the Recoilless Rifle Platoon, 5th Marine Regiment, in the Korean War carrying ammunition under enemy fire. Robin’s account evokes echoes of War Horse but this story of a great equine Marine is true. Much more than that, Reckless became a war heroin fact, she became a combat Marine, earning staff sergeant’s stripes before her retirement to Camp Pendleton. Not only has she been the force behind recognizing Reckless with a monument at the National Museum of the Marine Corps and at Camp Pendleton, but she has now put between hard covers the full story, the rousing. sometimes comic, sometimes tragiclife of this four-legged war hero who hauled ammunition to frontline Marines and inspired them with her relentless, and reckless, courage.

"Unfortunately, the story becomes a bit soppy toward the end with repetitive tales of the Marines undying love and her ceremonial life at Camp Pendleton."
"The second half is a slower-paced recounting of the horse's life after the Korean War, something like "We had a parade and Sgt."
"You cannot help but fall in love with Reckless, and the men who treated her as one of them. I would recommend it to anyone who loves animal stories, war stories, and heroism!"

Best Bird Pet Care
Over the thirty years they had worked together, Alex and Irene had become famous—two pioneers who opened an unprecedented window into the hidden yet vast world of animal minds. Alex's brain was the size of a shelled walnut, and when Irene and Alex first met, birds were not believed to possess any potential for language, consciousness, or anything remotely comparable to human intelligence. Together, Alex and Irene uncovered a startling reality: We live in a world populated by thinking, conscious creatures. Alex missed Irene when she was away. Alex and Irene stayed together through thick and thin—despite sneers from experts, extraordinary financial sacrifices, and a nomadic existence from one university to another. Alex is the African gray parrot whose ability to master a vocabulary of more than 100 words and answer questions about the color, shape and number of objects—garnered wide notice during his life as well as obituaries in worldwide media after his death in September 2007. While this book inevitably covers some of the same ground, it is a moving tribute that beautifully evokes the struggles, the initial triumphs, the setbacks, the unexpected and often stunning achievements during a groundbreaking scientific endeavor spent uncovering cognitive abilities in Alex that no one believed were possible, and challenging science's deepest assumptions about the origin of human cognitive abilities.

Best Pet Dogs
Berns’s research offers surprising results on how dogs empathize with human emotions, how they love us, and why dogs and humans share one of the most remarkable friendships in the animal kingdom. How Dogs Love Us answers the age-old question of dog lovers everywhere and offers profound new evidence that dogs should be treated as we would treat our best human friends: with love, respect, and appreciation for their social and emotional intelligence. A Behind-the-Scenes Look at The Dog Project “This book’s abundant appeal and value come from following Berns through the challenges of constructing the experiment and especially of training his dog to participate. ‘Like a catcher and pitcher,’ he writes, he and his dog ‘became a team.’ The satisfaction of that relationship perhaps explains why our two species have lived together so long and happily.” — The Boston Globe "A neuroscientist wonders what goes on in the minds of our pet dogs: Do we delude ourselves when we believe that they love us? "In the fascinating book How Dogs Love Us , [Berns] recounts the methods his team employed, and how their pet dogs made these groundbreaking studies possible. “Neuroscientist Gregory Berns studies dog brains to answer that eternal question: Do our dogs really love us?” — Men’s Journal. "With infectious passion for dogs, science, life, and love, Gregory Berns takes us on a rollicking yet scientifically serious study of the mental life of dogs-what dogs understand and how they think. " How Dogs Love Us is the beautifully written story of an iconoclastic neuroscientist challenging the status quo and seeking to truly understand the dogs with whom we share our lives." In How Dogs Love Us , Gregory Berns gives us our first real look inside the brain of a dog, while simultaneously setting new standards in ethical science. How Dogs Love Us will revolutionize how we understand animals—especially our dogs. His explanations of the scientific thinking behind the Dog Project (as he calls his experiment) are crisp and clear and accessible to a nonscientist without being condescending…Some of the best parts of How Dogs Love Us, though, are about the questions, not the answers.

Find Best Price at Amazon"He was a 12 week old Golden puppy and he took my heart completely into his keeping the day he rode home on my lap from the breeder. There I saw reflected tenderness, a little bit of fear and resignation but still the unbridled bond/love we shared. Gregory Berns' recount of the Dog Project has given me great insight into the whole love affair I had with Jackson, and has assured me that all those moments of eye contact and caressing were truly reciprocal. Now I rejoice in the respect and love that Berns and his family share with their pets and appreciate all the efforts, care and concern the team displayed in the whole project process."
"From what I understand it is difficult to train a dog to recognize these type of symptoms because the attacks are as a result of a chemical imbalance that is different with each individual. He will start with a small yippy and get more insistent until I show him my medicine bottle and tell him I took my meds. I've had animals all my life and never doubted the connection between us but my little dog takes it to a higher dimension. It is a fantastic book to read without to much technological jargon but it has enough, after all this was a scientific experiment."
"That makes it all the more sweet when he recognizes how hard dogs try to communicate with and understand humans. I especially enjoyed the long discussion of the ethical issues he faced in setting up the research and the insistence of all the human researchers that the dogs would always be free to opt out, at any time. This book is a testament to what amazing things can be accomplished when humans acknowledge their dogs' abilities, treat them as partners (rather than as property or as slaves) and engage with them in a respectful, positive manner."
