I wanted tough roses, roses that took heat and drought andbug attacks and zombie apocalypses with aplomb and would still come outlooking great and covered with scented blossoms. Rose breeders, most notably David Austin, were crossing modern varietieswith old varieties and to get roses that combined the best of the newand the old. Other breeders were creating roses that were tough anddisease-resistant, such as the 'Knock-Out' landscape rose, which now you see everywhere.I planted some antique roses, and they looked great. The rose garden wasstarting to look spiffy, even though I still had to take roses out every year due to the rose rosette virus.
Reviews
"Really enjoyed the photos, and the determination to annihilate the rose predators."
"Just what I needed as an amateur gardener."
"New to rose gardening, I was searching for some good books on roses care and rose gardening. As someone new to roses care and rose gardening, I found this book to be more than adequate. I inherited some roses at my house from the previous owner so I was looking to better understand how to take better care of my roses and also learn the differences between hybrid tea, floribunda, grandiflora and polyantha, etc, as I am starting from scratch in learning how to identify my roses (although I would have to consult some of the rose databases on the Internet to better identify the roses, which would still be quite a task)."
"As an avid and interested rose keeper, I wanted a book filled with no nonsense, informative tips to help make my garden grow."
"I enjoyed reading it and getting a lot of ideas on how to improve my rose growing, the main problem at the present is I'm in an apartment with minimum space inside and absolutely no yard outside just a parking."
"This author also does a great job of describing organic methods and the ‘over the counter’ alternatives."
"Melissa's Rose book is one I have recommended to visitors at our local Rose Gardens."
"I love roses so this has a lot of useful information that I never had considered."

The Secret Garden
At first, Mary is her usual self, sour, disliking the large house, the people within it, and most of all the vast stretch of moor, which seems scrubby and gray after the winter. Martha Sowerby, her good-natured maidservant, tells Mary a story of the late Mrs. Craven, and how she would spend hours in a private garden growing roses. Soon she begins to lose her disposition and gradually comes to enjoy the company of Martha, Ben Weatherstaff the gardener, and also that of a friendly robin redbreast to whom she attaches human qualities. These two are sullen little peas in a pod, closed up in a gloomy old manor on the Yorkshire moors of England, until a locked-up garden captures their imaginations and puts the blush of a wild rose in their cheeks; "It was the sweetest, most mysterious-looking place any one could imagine. For anyone who has ever felt afraid to live and love, The Secret Garden 's portrayal of reawakening spirits will thrill and rejuvenate. Bailey makes fluid transitions between the voices and accents of various characters, from terse Mrs. Medlock and surly groundskeeper Ben to chipper housemaid Martha.

"Enchanted by the garden, Mary sets out to tend it and bring it back to life, aided by a grouchy gardener, a soft-hearted animal-loving boy named Dickon... and Colin, a cousin who has been locked inside all his life and treated like an invalid. The garden turns out to be just the thing both Mary and Colin need to revitalize themselves... and it just may finally bring healing to a family long broken by tragedy... "The Secret Garden" is an enchanting novel, told with an almost fairy-tale-like language that evokes the sights, sounds, and smells of the English moors and gardens and their inhabitants. Still, complaints aside, I can easily see why "The Secret Garden" enjoys a reputation as a children's classic."
"It was clearly written to teach kids (and adults) about the power of beliefs - positive beliefs, religious, self-improvement, believing in yourself, magic - the book encompasses all “belief systems” - to say - just believe in something positive and watch how it influences your life for the better."
"I recommend this book to all who have a love for a heartwarming tale of two children overcoming their wretched lives with the help of the neighbor boy and his family and an abandoned and secret garden."
"I couldn't put the book down."
"The metaphor of the garden coming to life was beautifully crafted and the characters are well developed."
"I read this as the leader for a group of Middle/High School students who wanted to read classics during the spring/summer."
"I either saw the movie or read the book years ago, it was familiar, but I didn't remember everything."
"It weaves a tapestry of the sweet, beautiful journeys of damaged human hearts emerging from dark, bleak places into the space where joy and appreciation blooms as they witness the rejuvenation and rebirth of a once neglected and dying garden into a thriving place of beauty and life."

Roses Without Chemicals: 150 Disease-Free Varieties That Will Change the Way You Grow Roses
“I wish I had this when I planted my rose garden twenty-five years ago. I am now about to plant another garden, full of wonderful rose varieties and I intend to follow Peter's advice wholeheartedly.” — Martha Stewart “A valuable guide for gardeners wanting to try roses that are less disease-prone.” — Library Journal. Peter E. Kukielski, former curator of the award-winning rose garden at the New York Botanical Garden, highlights 150 of these tough, new varieties, rating them for disease resistance, flowering, and fragrance.
Reviews
"For 20 years now I bought very beautiful and attractive, sometimes even very fragrant roses sold by local flower shops and growers. Only to see them wither and die during the wet, humid and hot summer raining season mostly destroyed by mold. The park service replaces most of the same roses every year because most of them do well enough from November to April but once the rains come to perish."
"Awesome book packed with great information on growing roses successfully without the use of chemicals."
"I really liked the emphasis on rose varieties that don't require pesticides or chemical fertilizers - information you might not get from nurseries and garden centers."
"I found this to be informative on rose I never thought I would consider."
"The only thing is that the book touched base on insects, but didn't delve into details on how to control them effectively while staying chemical free."
"It shows basic info for care, diseases and pests. It even has metric conversions."
"I love this book."
"Glad the results of several years of non-chemical field tests are in one well-written and illustrated text."
