"Great translation of an ancient work."
"Dionysus "hovering between divine majesty and human weakness, magnificence and pettiness--and between male and female--the teasing, seductive, playful, epicene god is a great study in ambiguity." The horror than felt, as Pentheus is punished and then his corpse torn apart, while his own mother than slowly comes out of the bacchanalian frenzy to realize her own complicity, deepens what could have been but a strange depiction of subliminal drives into a portrayal of compassion after cruelty. As Mendelsohn notes, consensus is lacking "because its subject--among other things--is the irrational, and how conventional intellectual resources wither in the face of a wildness, a potency beyond reason.""
His works are frequently performed in opera houses throughout the world and, transcending the boundaries of the genre, some of his themes have long since taken root in popular culture – such as "La donna è mobile" from Rigoletto, "Va, pensiero" (The Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves) from Nabucco, "Libiamo ne' lieti calici" (The Drinking Song) from La traviata and the "Grand March" from Aida. Virgil's long-renowned narrative follows the Trojan warrior Aeneas as he carries his family from his besieged, fallen home, stops in Carthage for a doomed love affair, visits the underworld and founds in Italy, through difficult combat, the settlements that will become, first the Roman republic, and then the empire Virgil knew. Fagles, writing of Virgil's sense of "the price of empire," notes that "it seems to be a price we keep on paying, in the loss of blood and treasure, time-worn faith and hard-won hope, down to the present day."

Find Best Price at Amazon"I’ve recently completed the major tragedies, so this comedy provided a counterpoint, in that at least most of the characters don’t die at the end. And this play is a “staple” of high school theater productions, in part, no doubt, because of the tangled webs that love affairs can spin. The stage is in Athens, and the Duke, Theseus, who will marry his own beloved, Hippolyta, the Queen of the Amazons, in a month’s time, proclaims the “law of the land”: Hermia must follow her father’s wishes “To whom you are but a form of wax” or be killed or placed in a nunnery for the rest of her life, as a virgin. Fairies are spreading “pixie dust” the magic elixir that changes lives, and now Lysander awakes, and declares his love of Helena, saying that he can see her soul. One wonders how a high school English teacher would handle challenges to the not-so-fair Helena’s proclamation to Demetrius: “And even for that do I love you the more."
"It made a lasting impression on me and helped to give me at least a glimmer of appreciation for good literature. The twists and turns of the romance between the star-crossed lovers, Lysander and Hermia, were funny and sometimes poignant. But Demetrius also loves Hermia and Hemia's father favors him as a husband for his daughter. Helena, hoping to curry favor with Demetrius, tells him about the plot and he goes to the same wood seeking the lovers, but there he, too, falls asleep. On (mangled) instructions from Oberon, Puck goes to the wood and sprinkles the eyelids of the sleepers with a potion which causes both Demetrius and Lysander to wake up in love with Helena and hating Hermia. For another, he prefigured practically every plot of every book and short story that came after him and his sonnets are truly timeless."
"Here is the cast list as printed in the original 1954 LP release of this recording by RCA (LM-6115): Oberon - Robert Helpmann. Titania - Moira Shearer. Puck - Philip Guard. Peaseblossom - Jocelyn Britten. Mustardseed - Sheila Wright. Moth - Joan King. Cobweb - Tania d'Avray. Theseus - Anthony Nicholls. Hippolyta - Margaret Courtnay. Egeus - John Dearth. Hermia - Anne Walford. Lysander - Terence Longdon. Helena - Joan Benham. Demetrius - Patrick Macnee. Philostrate - Peter Johnson. Peter Quince - Eliot Makeham. Snug - Michael Redington. Bottom - Stanley Holloway. Flute - Philip Locke. Snout - Norman Rossington. Starveling - John Warner. Singers - Elizabeth Wade, Suzanne Steele, Anne Wilson. A note in the booklet reads, "The text is The New Temple Shakespeare, edited by M. R. Ridley."
"When looking at classics this is one of the first one many people read."

Find Best Price at Amazon"I have, at various times, tried to read four different editions of War & Peace (Penguin, Signet, Barnes & Noble, and now this) and by far, this is the best edition I've seen. This edition is everything I was looking for in a copy of War & Peace and I cannot recommend it highly enough. When reading the Signet edition, I found myself using google translate to understand sentences or phrases left in the book in French. Other editions translated most of the French but left phrases here and there untranslated and in the text, without footnotes. Cons: Compared to editions that translate all the French, reading in the footnotes can be burdensome."
"Approaching War and Peace feels like a monumental task. Set against the backdrop of Napoleonic Europe, the story follows three main Russian families as they navigate the early years of the nineteenth century. Our main protagonist is Pierre Bezukhov, a mirror for Tolstoy himself. The Bolkonskys are right and proper with an autocratic father from one of the lower levels of Hell. But honestly the main characters that the book follows number about 5 to 10. Aside from Pierre Bezukhov, there is Prince Andrei Bolkonsky, Princess Marya Bolkonskaya, Countess Natalya Rostova, Count Nicholas Rostov, and Helene Kuragina. Perhaps the German word, 'Gesamtkunstwerk' - total work of art - should be applied to literature. The notes and translations of the French were all hyperlinked which made things easy enough to read and follow."
"I most definitely recommend this book for readers who enjoy classic works."
"I'm about 3/4 through the book so I probably should not write a review."
"The telling of men at war was surreal as the fighting then was walking/running up to one another to engage in battle for regulars and on horseback for officers."

A landmark American drama that inspired a classic film and a Broadway revival—featuring an introduction by David Mamet A blistering character study and an examination of the American melting pot and the judicial system that keeps it in check, Twelve Angry Men holds at its core a deeply patriotic faith in the U.S. legal system. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators. L.A. Theatre Works proves it knows how to package audio dramas with this new recording of Rose's classic play (which began as a 1954 episode of TV's Studio One and then was adapted to the screen in 1957 starring Henry Fonda). Sequestered in a closed room, twelve jurors must decide the fate of a young man who has been accused of first-degree murder and faces the death penalty. The talented cast, including Richard Kind, Hector Elizondo, Robert Foxworth, Joe Spano and Dan Castellanetta, provide 85 minutes of riveting entertainment, recorded in front of a live audience. Over the course of a steamy and tense afternoon, twelve jurors deliberate the fate of a 19 year-old boy alleged to have murdered his own father.

(Publisher's Weekly). Actually, identifying the actors is the least of our problems, for in brief, we are sequestered inside the jury room alongside the twelve, eleven of whom are fighting the holdout among them who has reasonable doubt. You can't watch "Studio One" (they were probably saved on kinescopes anyway, the technology that preceded videotaping and resulted in fuzzy, grainy, and distorted products for showing in different time zones.)."

While I was memorizing my lines from the left-hand pages, I quickly discovered I could learn my character’s deeper motivations for what he was saying by referring to the modern English paraphrase."
"I have read the Masters of Rome series since the beginning but I failed to notice that this one came out in 2007 so I was very excited to buy it and start reading it. I have enjoyed the series and found it insightful about the internal and external forces that destroyed the Roman Republic and birthed the Roman Empire."
"The book sets up and amazing plot of romance, jealousy and betrayal in which satisfaction is met in such a way at the end of the book that the reader is left with mixed emotions this is truly a great book to read and to talk about."
"Nor does she forget the rest of the vivid cast that populate the story, from Octavian -- now calling himself Caesar -- and his sister, Octavia, and Mark Antony, Julius Caesar's former friend and now determined to make himself just as great as slain dictator. McCullough creates some of the most unusual characters that I've come across in a long time, and ones that forced me to fling aside all of my preconcieved notions of this often told story. It's subtle, engaging and while she's not adverse about putting a bit of creativity in the story, she also knows her facts. It's here that makes her storytelling so good -- she creates characters that the reader can feel deeply about, and while you might not like them personally, they are compelling. Along the way, there's plenty of details about daily life, the way that the ancients looked at the world around them, and some deeply moving prose."

Miranda, along with Jeremy McCarter, a cultural critic and theater artist who was involved in the project from its earliest stages--"since before this was even a show," according to Miranda--traces its development from an improbable performance at the White House to its landmark opening night on Broadway six years later. Find Best Price at Amazon"I've read the Chernow biography, listened to the cast recording non-stop (ha) since September, and been an avid follower of Lin's tweets, Facebook posts, interviews, #Ham4Ham shows, and Genius annotations. Among other delights, it includes: the full libretto of this sung-through (and rapped-through) show, with extensive annotations from LMM that give new insights, meaning, and historical context to the words that you might already know by heart; more than 30 essays about the cast members, the production team, the creative process, and the facts of Hamilton's life; copies of relevant historical documents referenced in the show; pages from LMM's notebooks with early drafts and outlines; and a stunningly beautiful array of production photographs, cast portraits, and backstage candids. There is the American Revolution that is brought to life in this show, and there is the revolution of the show itself - "a musical that changes the way that Broadway sounds, that alters who gets to tell the story of our founding, that lets us glimpse the new, more diverse America rushing our way.""
"Giddy with excitement, I pulled back the packaging tab and inside was this glorious tome. Looking forward to enveloping myself in this Hamilton word and pictures story, that is until I actually get to see the show... A girl can dream :-). Edited to add: and the dream is almost a reality... Used this gorgeous book to deliver surprise tickets to my niece who turned 18 today."
"It's not a love that's died down over the past few weeks - indeed, it's only continued to grow - so it's no surprise that I picked up Hamilton: A Revolution, which tells the story of the writing of the musical, as well as providing Miranda's annotations for all of the show's songs and lyrics. The fact that the book alternates between short essays and songs from the show allows the pictures to nicely complement the text at all times, giving the reader a sense of how the show might play out, and giving us the chance to pair images with the songs that so many of us already know by heart. More than that, though, they give you a sense of the care that went into the staging of the show; from the set to the costuming, from the insanely detailed props to the intricate stage layout, the book conveys the fact that the show is every bit as carefully crafted and intricately constructed as the album and the songs. Even with all the time I've spent on Genius reading the show's annotations can't replace the glee of reading the lyrics in a beautifully made book, and getting to savor all of Miranda's wonderful prose - the wordplay, the historical allusions, the shout-outs to old school rap and Broadway staples, all of it."
"It is not in Kindle format; it's just photocopies of double columned pages that doesn't fit the screen and is very hard to read."
