Love and Math: The Heart of Hidden Reality
In this heartfelt and passionate book, Frenkel shows that mathematics, far from occupying a specialist niche, goes to the heart of all matter, uniting us across cultures, time, and space. Considered by many to be a Grand Unified Theory of mathematics, the Langlands Program enables researchers to translate findings from one field to another so that they can solve problems, such as Fermat's last theorem, that had seemed intractable before. As a teenager Frenkel was converted from math hater to eager theorist by a mathematical friend of the family, enough to pursue it despite his struggles against an unapologetically anti-Semitic Soviet educational system. Frenkel balances autobiographical narrative with enthusiastic discussions of his own work on the Langlands program, a web of algebraic conjectures named after a Canadian mathematician that is noted for its usefulness in organizing seemingly chaotic data into regular patterns full of symmetry and harmony, and its applications to quantum theory. The surprising notion of a “formula of love” fits into the remarkable understanding of math Frankel unfolds as he recounts his labors on conceptual frontiers where an audacious new master theory, the Langlands Program, is linking geometry, number theory, and algebra.
Reviews
"Being an engineer, I fall into the former category and came to this book already loving math, and I found the math in this book to often be quite tough going (especially in the second half of the book), though I did get a rough sense of what he was talking about (and I followed the advice to keep going in the tougher parts rather than getting bogged down). True, I could re-read the whole book to get a better understanding, but realistically it would make more sense to bone up on the prerequisite math using other books and then return to this book in a few years (yes, that long)."
"This book tells a legend and I think few of us can experience such amazing moments."
"The most heartrending part of this story is that Frenkel in fact grew up with little knowledge or experience of Jewish tradition or practice in any positive way; for him it was simply a millstone around his neck."
"I bought the audiobook and the Kindle book, but I found it too difficult to follow the information on the audio, as it always refers to numbers, symbols and equations."
"Now that I am taking a math class for the first time in ten years I am frustrated and looking for a different perspective."
"However, Frenkel's assumption that the typical reader can follow his explanations of abstract math and number theory seems unreasonably optimistic."

Honorable Mention for the 2017 PROSE Award in Textbook/Best in Physical Sciences and Mathematics, Association of American Publishers "Another excellent entry in the ‘Nutshell' series, Zee's latest has it all: broad scope, depth, thorough explanations, history, and an appealing sense of humor. The author's knowledge of mathematics and physics is encyclopedic, and he leavens the text generously with episodes and asides drawn from the life and work of the major figures in the development of group theory and its applications in physics." combines clarity of presentation with mathematical detail at a level of rigor acceptable to physicists. The result is a tour de force that guides readers through the universe of group theory and leads them to recent particle physics, cosmology, and condensed matter. Zee is a cheerful and inspirational guide to material that in many other hands could be dry and lifeless. "Zee's lovely book on the theory of group representations is comprehensive and complete, both from the mathematical and physical points of view. Clearly written, this book makes an ideal text for a graduate course in physics on the subject."

"I am still reading the book, but I have to say that I believe it to be a masterpiece."
"I received the book today, and having thumbed through the book it looks like an excellent place for an undergraduate to start his group theory studies. In terms of content, the book excels at explaining and using the concept of real, pseudo real, and complex representations. So if you see QFT, GUTS, Supersymmetry, and or Strings in your future, this book is the easiest place to get some necessary background knowledge, and be entertained as well."
"One positive aspect, i find, is that in some sections he proceeds "painfully slow" so as not to confuse the reader and he "beats to death" the rotation group SO(N). This is a book (all books really) you absolutely HAVE to work through examples and problems as you go through the text. (So far i am 140pages in). our Dear Professor offers many many examples of finite groups (which i personally feel is more tricky than continuous groups) and helps you construct character tables and deduce the irreps with his guidance. But as a physicist i already have a working knowledge of group theory and appreociate the power of the subject. I suspect as the book delves into physics and the use of groups in physics readers will certainly fall in love woth the subject."
"Especially many beginners may feel the need to understand all these advanced topics before reading on and thus give up before they read about the most important topics, such as spinors."

A Book of Set Theory (Dover Books on Mathematics)
A historical introduction presents a brief account of the growth of set theory, with special emphasis on problems that led to the development of the various systems of axiomatic set theory. Starting with a repetition of the familiar arguments of elementary set theory, the level of abstract thinking gradually rises for a progressive increase in complexity.A historical introduction presents a brief account of the growth of set theory, with special emphasis on problems that led to the development of the various systems of axiomatic set theory.
Reviews
"with additional current set theory paradoxes and current thinking, and many other aspects of set theory and mathematical logic that have become crucial to newer topics like AI, natural language processing, computing, linguistics, combinatorics, the competing category theories, and much more. Even VERY current topics like equivalence in string and M theory use foundation concepts from set theory, so the topic itself is seminal and useful for many fields, from programming to engineering. In fact, the author, even back in 71 at the height of it, points out how set theory, in historical perspective, isn't "new" at all, but truly foundational, and as we go forward into topology, rings and even tensors, set theory keeps right up."
"Very good book on set theory."
"clear and precise."
"It's a good book...simple explanation."
"While the books goes into truth tables for propositional logic, and uses them to prove some sentences, it does not give you the actual basic rules of propositional logic."
"I work with relational database and while I recently told one of my direct reports that you absolutely DONT need to understand set theory at a level this book goes in to, I'm at that point in my career where the progression of my craft really starts to delve into theories, not just practice."
"Granted, you can select them and call up a zoomed out-of-book display which must be dismissed in order to go back and see the formula in context, a process which can take a number opposes at the X in the upper right corner."
"This book is a gem."

Prime Obsession: Bernhard Riemann and the Greatest Unsolved Problem in Mathematics
What he tossed out to the assembled mathematicians that day has proven to be almost cruelly compelling to countless scholars in the ensuing years. In a series of extraordinary developments during the 1970s, it emerged that even the physics of the atomic nucleus is connected in ways not yet fully understood to this strange conundrum. Alternating passages of extraordinarily lucid mathematical exposition with chapters of elegantly composed biography and history, Prime Obsession is a fascinating and fluent account of an epic mathematical mystery that continues to challenge and excite the world. In Prime Obsession , John Derbyshire deals brilliantly with both Riemann's life and that problem: proof of the conjecture, "All non-trivial zeros of the zeta function have real part one-half." Though the statement itself passes as nonsense to anyone but a mathematician, Derbyshire walks readers through the decades of reasoning that led to the Riemann Hypothesis in such a way as to clear it up perfectly. Prime Obsession offers alternating chapters of step-by-step math and a history of 19th-century European intellectual life, letting readers take a breather between chunks of well-written information. Derbyshire treats the hypothesis historically, tracking increments of progress with sketches of well-known people, such as David Hilbert and Alan Turing, who have been stymied by it.
Reviews
"I bought this book together with "The Music of the Primes: Searching to Solve the Greatest Mystery in Mathematics"."
"I bought the book because of the political and current events writing of Derbyshire are always meaty , informative and original."
"The math required is limited to 2d semester calculus, tho' it helps immensely to have had real and complex analysis, some number theory and abstract algebra."
"Naturally, he had to omit some of the more mathematically sophisticated details, including questions of convergence, how to extend the domain of the zeta function from the series definition, and how exactly you calculate the zeros of the zeta function."
"It compares favorably to the other popular books on the same topic because it takes the trouble to SHOW the deep beauty of the Riemann hypothesis by laying out the mathematics in some detail, while always keeping the explanations accessible to the thoughtful layperson."
"The hypothesis was first introduced by Bernhard Riemann's paper "On the Number of Prime Numbers Less Than a Given Quantity" in August 1859. "If either...or...could have proved the truth of the [Riemann] Hypothesis, the PNT would have followed at once...They couldn't of course...The PNT [could] follows from a much weaker result...: All non-trivial zeros of the zeta function have real part less than one." Riemann Hypothesis is similar to the above weaker result: all non-trivial zeros of the zeta function have real part one-half."

How to Prove It: A Structured Approach
Many students have trouble the first time they take a mathematics course in which proofs play a significant role. The author uses these concepts as the basis for a step-by-step breakdown of the most important techniques used in constructing proofs. He shows how complex proofs are built up from these smaller steps, using detailed "scratch work" sections to expose the machinery of proofs about the natural numbers, relations, functions, and infinite sets.
Reviews
"I excelled at "calculating" stuff by simply plugging in numbers into some sort of equation our high school teachers would spoil us with, but when I got to college, I had to start thinking abstractly- and it bothered me a lot, because I had no idea how to test or prove the logic of some statement. The book takes the average student (it's shocking with how little math background one needs) and introduces him to basic boolean logic. Velleman, however, goes the extra mile in the text to see that the reader UNDERSTANDS the logical buildup and concepts of mathematical proofs. Sure, set theory can be confusing- but after reading several other texts in discrete math, including "Discrete Math and its Applications" by Kenneth Rosen (if you're reading this, no offense) I've found that Velleman by far writes the most comprehensive and cohesive explanations for understanding set theory. However, my feelings are very honest and not exaggerated: this book is written so one can learn discrete mathematics, and really helps the reader understand what higher math is all about- and how mathematicians think, write, and communicate."
"If you need to learn various styles of proofs and their associated techniques, this is a great place to start."
"Also some people complained about the lack of a complete answer key, but if you learn the chapter thoroughly and do the answered problems, you can make it through the rest of the problem set."
"Not finished yet but it has been very instructive so far."
"Would be good for novice undergrads or high school students."
"Best of all I have new hope of being able to re-apply old numerical skills with greater rigour to some 21st century media enterprise number crunching."
"I am very happy with the book."
