The Bhagavad Gita (Easwaran's Classics of Indian Spirituality)
The Gita opens, dramatically, on a battlefield, as the warrior Arjuna turns in anguish to his spiritual guide, Sri Krishna, for answers to the fundamental questions of life. Prince Arjuna faced a dilemma that many face sooner or later--whether to take action that is necessary yet morally ambiguous. The difference is that Arjuna's action was to wage war against his own family. Coupled with his thorough introduction, Easwaran's version comes off on all the levels it should: as a guide to action, devotional Scripture, a philosophical text, and inspirational reading.
Reviews
"Easwaran's introduction sets the stage nicely--this work is easily accessible even for those of us who are not experts on theology or Indian culture--and his translation is remarkably easy to read despite the profundity of its content."
"When my daughter suggested we share a reading of the Gita a few years ago, I recalled slogging through this classic as required reading for a philosophy of religion class in college and hoped that this time I might get more out of it."
"Having never learned Sanskrit, I can't very well rate the translation, but I can only say that in reading the Bhagavad Gita, I learned a lot about Hindu religion, and I found much of it thrilling."
"Very informative."
"A classic everyone must read."
"This book as well as the Bhagavad Gita, The Upanishads and the Dhammapada, all by Eknath Easwaran offer excellent insights into the issues we all face throughout life and new ways to understand the challenges we all face from childhood to adulthood."
"Got this book for my husband, so, of course, I am reading it first.... (wink)."
"The Bhagavad Gita is one of the world's greatest spiritual books."

Bhagavad Gita: A New Translation
His celebrated version of the Tao Te Ching is the most popular edition in print, and his translations of Jesus, Rilke, Genesis, and Job have won the hearts of readers and critics alike. It is the core text of the Hindu tradition and has been treasured by American writers from Emerson and Thoreau to T. S. Eliot, who called it the greatest philosophical poem after the Divine Comedy . In a bizarre mixture of praise and condescension, Mitchell disregards two millennia of Indian commentary, seeking illumination on the text from Daoism and Zen, with the Gita coming up just shy of full spiritual merit. --Brian Bruya Mitchell must by now be accounted one of our generation!s heroic translators, having taken on the Book of Job, the Tao te Ching, and Genesis and done so much to popularize Rilke in English. Inevitably, this text will remain both ancient and foreign to many modern readers, but Mitchell!s work goes a long way to making these words...[drive] away your ignorance and delusion.
Reviews
"Include it is written in a dead language and still flows naturally as water down the stream after a spring rain."
"This book helped me to recognize how much Christianity has in common with other wisdom traditions."
"Great read and overview, yet even better if you can stop the narrative and truly work to answer each of the thought provoking, intentional questions."
"My beginning read and introduction are starting well and it does seem to have a "living" feel, very glad to have discovered this translation."
"The use of the battlefield and conflict arising from people choosing to fight against members of their own family, provided an excellent backdrop for learning about Karma and the other beliefs of Hinduism."
"Best version of the Bhagavad Gita to read hands down!!"
"One of the best translation I have seen."
"I've read a few other translation and this is truly the best - perhaps it's because I'm a westerner and he's a westerner writing for a western audience - but then there's also the poetry of his writing."

How to Attain Enlightenment: The Vision of Non-Duality
This complete guide to enlightenment presents the wisdom of the ancient science of self-inquiry, a time-tested means for achieving spiritual freedom. From reflections on moving to a larger living space and clutter to assimilating experiences, How to Attain Enlightenment is a powerful survey any new age library needs. This book goes through the entire gamut of topics covered by the Vedas, making use of yoga, detachment, the ego, karma, dharma, love, meditation and much more, to bring about an inner growth, wherein is visible the enlightened and luminous self. Sentient Publications presents its next best-seller, How to Attain Enlightenment:The Vision of Nonduality by acclaimed author James Schwartz, who offers his ample wisdom on the ancient teachings of 'Vedanta.'. In his first chapter, Inquiry into Object Happiness Schwartz holds the key to what it means to discover enlightenment… rather, a higher sense of awareness and consciousness to receive guidance and be in unison with the power of the Universe: 'What we call reality is governed by the uncertainly principle,' writes Schwartz, 'Because our source of food, animal or vegetable, is unconcerned about our need to survive, we are forced to either pursue it or cultivate it. The same principle holds true in what he further elaborates that even when material needs have been met, individuals often find that they are still not completely fulfilled or satisfied in their lives—this is where having and maintaining a state of Vedanta helps soul seekers to be at one with the self and with the Universe, regardless of life circumstances. If you are on a quest for wisdom and are ready to manifest a heightened state of consciousness so that you can become liberated and freed from the limitations that negate your personal and spiritual happiness, then gain the knowledge you need that Schwartz offers in his book How to Attain Enlightenment through a vast array of teachings, meditations, and more. Swartz is very funny in parts of the book, and it was refreshing to see a guy write in a fashion that uses descriptive terms that don’t have you reading the words consciousness, awareness or pure being in every paragraph. It was here that he learned of the famous Indian sage Swami Chinmayananda, whose knowledge and teachings proved to be the means to set James free.
Reviews
"Eloquently expounded by James Swartz, can't recommend it highly enough!"
"In only six months of exposing myself to this ancient means of knowledge called Vedanta, the freedom (enlightenment) that had alluded me for over 30 years happened."
"If you have a real heart for seeing through the matrix, study this book , become this book, I promise you will become one with that element inside you that is eternal. Im telling you folks this is the real deal if you want to get in touch with the eternal element alive in each one of us read this with your heart and mind."
"The cover art is in the Zen aesthetic style;however this book is direct methodology of Avaida Vendanta(the science of the Self recorded in the ancient Upanishades). This is a must read for the serious student because of the clearity it is able to provide.I personally think it would be life changing for anyone who took the time to read this book."
"It could provide a certain structure and introduce him or her to such concepts as Rajasic, Tamasic and Sattvic modes of conduct and thinking(though at some point they might find it unnecessary to keep conceptualizing within that framework)."
"I have studied Adyashanti's material for the last few years."
"Enlightenment is not an experience."
"Wonderful explanation of the path of Vedanta, clearly revealing how the simple knowledge "I am formless, limitless awareness" when assimilated in a ripe practitioner, sets us free from the imaginary bondage of believing in limitation and separation."

"I freely admit that, in general, I am not a "new-agey" person and I have spent the biggest part of my adult life looking upon the various disciplines therein as little more than nonsense and "hooey". I began to read but, before my arrogant pessimism could fully kick in, the author made a bold claim right out of the starting gate: “Anyone with vision out of both eyes can begin seeing the radiating energy aura surrounding every person, usually within just 5-10 minutes of training…”. Okay, I thought. I eagerly flipped ahead to Chapter 10, "Retraining Your Eye Rods and Cones” to Exercise 7 which asked me to begin by focusing on a pencil. My mind ferried between the shock of "seeing" an aura for the first time, and the disgust of being keenly aware of the actions of a canine tongue that frequently licked my face."
"Ever since I was younger, I had always been curious about auras and the certain energies that people seem to give off. I found the color part very intriguing as it explained the meanings of colors you may see as well as the different stages of auras."
"This is an excellent book for people interested in really understanding auras and how they "work". It was awesome to have that nice storyline feeling to it going on in the background :). Overall it was a totally awesome book, for beginners or people really wanting to learn this or for those looking for an interesting way to spend the afternoon."

Anatomy of the Spirit: The Seven Stages of Power and Healing
Anatomy of the Spirit also presents Dr. Myss's breakthrough model of the body's seven centers of spiritual and physical power, in which she synthesizes the ancient wisdom of three spiritual traditions-the Hindu chakras, the Christian sacraments, and the Kabbalah's Tree of Life-to demonstrate the seven stages through which everyone must pass in the search for higher consciousness and spiritual maturity. Fortunately, Myss is a skilled writer as well as researcher, able to ground her extensive spiritual and religious discussions by using real-life stories and a tight writing style. Those who are squeamish with the notion of biography affecting biology will find this book a struggle (in one chapter, Myss links pancreatic cancer with a man's refusal to unburden his life and start fulfilling his dreams). --Gail Hudson One of the hottest new voices in the alternative health/spirituality scene, Myss is a "medical intuitive" whose work with Dr. C. Norman Shealy resulted in their coauthored book, The Creation of Health.

The Great Work of Your Life: A Guide for the Journey to Your True Calling
In this fast-paced age, the often overwhelming realities of daily life may leave you feeling uncertain about how to realize your life’s true purpose—what spiritual teachers call dharma. Cope takes readers on a step-by-step tour of this revered tale, and in order to make it relevant to contemporary readers, he highlights well-known Western lives that embody its central principles—including such luminaries as Jane Goodall, whose life trajectory shows us the power of honoring The Gift; Walt Whitman, who listened for the call of the times; Susan B. Anthony, whose example demonstrates the power of focused energy; John Keats, who was able to let his desire give birth to aspiration; and Harriet Tubman, whose life was nothing if not a lesson in learning to walk by faith. If you’re feeling lost in your own life’s journey, The Great Work of Your Life may provide you with answers to the questions you most urgently need addressed—and may help you to find and to embrace your true calling. You’ll gain a better appreciation of divine guidance and perhaps even understand how you might better hear it in your own life.” — Yoga Journal “I am moved and inspired by this book, the clarity and beauty of the lives lived in it, and the timeless dharma it teaches.” —Jack Kornfield, author of A Path with Heart “A rich source of contemplation and inspiration [that] encourages readers . Praise for The Great Work of Your Life “Cope layers biographical teaching stories between the lessons offered by what might be the greatest teaching story of all: the Bhagavad Gita, in which Krishna teaches Arjuna about finding and manifesting your life's divine purpose, or dharma. Cope, while examining the life struggles faced by such visionaries as Jane Goodall, Harriet Tubman, and Mohandas Gandhi, encourages readers to reject the modern idea that 'we can be anyone we want to be' and instead to discover and fully pursue their inner self's calling….The historical portraits make interesting reading in their own right—Cope is a skilled storyteller—but in the service of illustrating a well-organized thesis about achieving true fulfillment, they offer a rich source of contemplation and inspiration.” — Publisher’s Weekly "The director of the Institute for Extraordinary Living at the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health inquires into the dharma--vocation or calling--of a selection of both illustrious and ordinary individuals. With this masterwork of a book, Stephen Cope shows us once again that great yoga writing need not be esoteric, complicated, or full of Sanskrit to point the way to liberation.”— Yoga Journal. Keep a pen and paper handy as you read this remarkable book: It’s like an owner’s manual for the soul.”—Dani Shapiro, author of Devotion “I am moved and inspired by The Great Work of Your Life, the clarity and beauty of the lives lived in it, and the timeless dharma it teaches.”—Jack Kornfield, author of A Path with Heart “I was spellbound and inspired by this book from beginning to end. This is a great read and a great revitalizing breath of fresh air.”—Sylvia Boorstein, author of Happiness Is an Inside Job “Stephen Cope has taken great Western figures—poets, painters, freedom fighters, a composer—and shows how the dharma of fierce determination played through their lives and how it can inspire all of us today. It was a joy to read.”—Natalie Goldberg, author of Old Friend from Far Away “Consistently well-written and get-up-and-go inspirational, this book should go right to the top of your reading list… this valuable book should help you bring 'the great work of your own life' into sharper focus.” – Yoga International.

"Most of us cannot walk in the woods or near a pond for a couple years (while our mother brings us cookies) and just write poetry and reflect on nature. Now that my children are grown or gone (one died in a car accident) I understand that life is very short and I want to grow as a person before it's my time to go as well. Yet I still have an obligation to my husband and don't want him to feel like he has to bear the complete burden of maintaining our life just so I can "find myself". Cope's examples were people that always knew they wanted to be a poet or a writer or had a very strong drive to do something very specific."
"I truly enjoyed this book."
"For anyone who either needs to find direction or who wants affirmation for the choices made over a professional lifetime."
"Love Stephen Cope's writings."
"I read this book at a time when I was considering the second half of my life and the future of my work."
"I find myself more engaged in my own Dharma work and freer from concern about how it is received."
"That as we develop spiritually we evolve from selfish to all humanity and this gives us impetus of magnitudes greater than one individual."
"A great read and coulnt put it down."
