The #1 New York Times –bestselling story about American Olympic triumph in Nazi Germany and now the inspiration for the PBS documentary “The Boys of ‘36” For readers of Unbroken , out of the depths of the Depression comes an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times—the improbable, intimate account of how nine working-class boys from the American West showed the world at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant. It encompasses the convergence of transcendent British boatmaker George Pocock; the quiet yet deadly effective UW men’s varsity coach, Al Ulbrickson; and an unlikely gaggle of young rowers who would shine as freshmen, then grow up together, a rough-and-tumble bunch, writes Brown, not very worldly, but earnest and used to hard work. In doing so, he offers a vivid picture of the socioeconomic landscape of 1930s America (brutal), the relentlessly demanding effort required of an Olympic-level rower, the exquisite brainpower and materials that go into making a first-rate boat, and the wiles of a coach who somehow found a way to, first, beat archrival University of California, then conquer a national field of qualifiers, and finally, defeat the best rowing teams in the world.

It is nice to learn something you never knew, but is common knowledge to an entire set of other people. Concepts from Daniel Brown to consider that are mixed into the story to teach all of us: 1) One of the fundamental challenges in rowing is that when any one member of a crew goes into a slump the entire crew goes with him. The speed of a racing shell is determined primarily by two factors: the power produced by the combined strokes of the oars, and the stroke rate, the number of strokes the crew takes each minute. There are other great ideas to ponder in this epic almost 400 page, could-not-put-down story."
"held local discussions, and had an opportunity to meet the author locally. If you like learning about history through a good story, this is the book for you."
"Even knowing the outcome did not diminish the excitement of the quest, and weaving the story of Hitler's rise to power during the 1936 Olympics captured the irony of his policies."
"The men in my life had been trying for years to get me to read this book."

From one of Outside magazine’s “Literary All-Stars” comes the thrilling true tale of the fastest boat ride ever, down the entire length of the Colorado River and through the Grand Canyon, during the legendary flood of 1983. " Kevin Fedarko's new brilliant work ... is the story about wilderness and the American mind, albeit an American mind juiced on Class V adrenaline... Perhaps because we sympathize so strongly with the characters of The Emerald Mile --thanks in no small part to Fedarko's flowing prose--you'll feel yourself lurching along with them on wooden boats, in ocher-hued canyons, beneath cobalt skies, into the frenzied thrashings of the Colorado river as the very lanscape of the West attempts to choke it." "Kevin Fedarko's remarkable The Emerald Mile re-creates an incredible voyage through the flood-swollen Grand Canyon in such heart-pounding detail that you need to pause every few pages to catch your breath... "His poetic and descriptive writing should only brighten his accolades and helps his non-fiction book read like a fast-paced fiction adventure...It isn't necessary to be a history buff or whitewater expert to enjoy this story... With meticulous research, notes and epilogue, Fedarko tells a satisfying story that is quite an entertaining ride." "Fedarko's effortlessly engaging narrative... is a labor of passion from an adventurous journalist who still calls the Grand Canyon home." "Grua's wild ride on the Colorado, how it mirrored his mercurial personality, is just on part of Fedarko's story; however, the rive, which runs through seven states, and the canyon, rich in both geological and political history, prove to be the real protagonists." Kevin Fedarko. lives in northern New Mexico and works as a part-time river guide in Grand Canyon National Park. In addition to his travel narratives in Outside , where he worked as a senior editor, Fedarko’s work has appeared in Esquire, National Geographic Adventure , and other publications, and has been anthologized in The Best American Travel Writing in 2004 and 2006.

"The history of Europeans awareness of the Grand Canyon goes way back to the Coronado Expedition, but the real history has been made in the last 100 years, and Kevin Fedarko draws you into the ancient, and modern world around the Grand Canyon and the Mighty Colorado."
"It slowly builds all the elements needed to tell the story of how the Colorado River was transformed - from the time of first recorded discovery, to the first exploration by John Wesley Powell, all the way through how the river was affected by the construction of the Glen Canyon Dam."
"But drawing upon the geologic and modern history of the ancient river, the story of the speed-run floats upon the setup like a small wooden dory slips across raging whitewater."
"It leaves a lot to ponder about our priceless natural resources and our sacred duty to preserve them."
"Also interesting to note that this huge flood was a direct result of an El Nino event and since we're experiencing that phenomenon this year again, one wonders if any other impending disasters are lurking somewhere down the road--especially since our infrastructure all over the country is getting old, and also our past "cost saving" compromises may be compromising safety."
"While reading I find myself standing on the edge, or down in the canyon, under the stars, listening to the water, or admiring the rocks, gasping at the sights, no matter how many times I see them. The Powell expedition starting as the continent was linked by rail."
"His writing elevates the most mundane features of his subject in the same way the dory runners were brutally aware of the slightest nuances of their crafts."
#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER Harry de Leyer first saw the horse he would name Snowman on a truck bound for the slaughterhouse. A Letter from Author Elizabeth Letts A writer is always on the lookout for a good story, but the first time I saw a striking old photograph, I didn’t realize that I had stumbled across a tale so extraordinary that it had the power to change lives. “[A] classic American dream story, with a down-on-its-luck horse galloping in for good measure.”— USA Today “This is a wonderful book—joyous, heartfelt, and an eloquent reminder that hope can be found in the unlikeliest of places. Most of all, it’s a moving testament to the incredible things that can grow from the bond between animals and humans.”—Gwen Cooper, author of Homer’s Odyssey “[Elizabeth Letts] details the intricacies of the show world beautifully, [but it’s] the relationship between the people in [Harry’s] life and this remarkable, humble horse that will captivate the reader.”— The Star-Ledger “The story is thrilling. Letts’s taut, detailed writing vividly recounts the excitement of the shows; the heights these underdogs climbed; the world of the Eisenhower fifties; and what Snowman and Harry meant to the everyday people they inspired.”—Shelf Awareness “If the true stories of horses Secretariat or Seabiscuit kept you spellbound, then consider leaving the racetrack setting to learn about the equestrian world’s shock in 1958 when an eighty-dollar plow horse arrived to compete in its top show.”— Fayetteville Observer “Written in evocative, skilled prose that rings true to the tenor of postwar America .

"One feels as if you're right there with Snowman.... as he's found on the butcher's truck, then as a school horse, then sold down the road... and his yearning to be back with the man who was his "master" and the big family."
"If you like true stories this one is for you."
"Along came a man needing a horse He could afford.....spending all his cash on an animal in a truck, whose eyes still showed a spark for life, while the others had already given up."
"A nearly heartbreaking start that turns into a marvelous real world example of a champion arising from the ashes."
"The flying Dutchman was a phrase I remember, but did not associate it with Harry and Snowman. It is one I will long remember the young man from Holland and this eighty dollar horse."
"Harry's wife kept meticulous financial records, cleaned their homes perfectly, took care of the six children, making sure that each was always dressed in clean, ironed clothes, and in her spare time, she and the children went out to the family stable, cleaned stalls, groomed, fed and watered the horses. The close-knit family was always scrapped for cash, but they did everything together and one gets the sense of how loving they were and how harmonious their family life was. What happened to all those adoring children and the sweetest, most devoted wonderful wife?"
"Harry de Leyter was a poor Dutch immigrant farmer and even $80.- was a lot of money when he saved that horse from the slaughterhouse.. Then at one point he realizes that this horse is a born jumper and starts training him and slowly he starts winning championships."

Foreword by Malcolm Gladwell. Newly updated with fresh takes on LeBron, Kobe, the Celtics & more*. Bill Simmons, the wildly opinionated and thoroughly entertaining basketball addict known to millions as ESPN.com’s The Sports Guy, has written the definitive book on the past, present, and future of the NBA. His knowledge and passion for the game provide him with few peers, yet his voice represents those who stick by their teams through thick and thin. Throw in pages of nearly-insane statistical breakdowns (including a projected boxscore from the movie Teen Wolf ), and it's easy to see why fans of all levels should clear shelf space for this instant classic. The true NBA fan will dive into this hefty volume and won’t resurface for about a week, emerging from the man cave unshaven, smelling of beer and pizza, grinning, and armed with NBA history, insight, anecdotes, statistics, and a dozen new examples of Simmons’ Unintentional Comedy Scale.

Find Best Price at Amazon"It's a great mix of stats and "I just feel" analysis that forms the basis of all great sport's debates."
"The focus here beyond his dad's Celtics season tickets sealing his fate as a kid fan, is on pyramid pantheon best ever debates, what ifs, secret knowledge, team comparison compendiums and various other scenario incidentals. Simmons, master of the between the lines scoop, says what's on his mind, is quick to offend and may be off the cuff with tactless fan boy antics, but he thinks like a genius GM and really should be considered as part of an NBA team brain trust someday. Via a coach sharp humanist link tying cults of personality to levels of performance, we learn that selfish players hit a ceiling and greats must share the ball to be transcendent. Twas ironically originated by an adult cinema historian who mixed pop, news and sports trivia intros with his movie reviews in an erotic film bible from the early 1980s. With so much info on elite players and teams, this needed a tongue-in-cheek chapter on footnote characters of the game like Darryl Dawkins, aka Chocolate Thunder, a rushed high school prospect who never reached his full potential but was memorable for destroying backboards on slam dunks."
"Last year I purchased Bill Simmons' The Book of Basketball for my birthday. If you aren't a fan who loves reading about the past in great detail this book may not be for you. And while it may make you wrinkle your nose at some of his thoughts he is still pretty centered and doesn't go too far left. His perspective is a great easy read and he loves having fun with his words. My brother-in-law Curtis got me into playing an NBA board game (Statis Pro Basketball) in the 70's and I was hooked. I wish there had been a little more love for my favorite Dominique Wilkins and the Atlanta Hawks but I was still very happy with his thoughts on both. To quote Paul Harvey this book gave me "the rest of the story". Nowadays every move is over analyzed instantly on TV and on the web allowing us to make a better informed analysis of what we are seeing in a game and around the league. Again it may be a bit much for the casual fan but if you think there is any possibility you might like this book I suggest you spend the $11.11 on Amazon or at some other retailer and I don't think you'll be disappointed."
"The passion yields some diversion that I think even the most NBA wonk might get a bit overwhelmed by."

In the tradition of Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, a stunningly vivid historical account of the forty-year battle between Comanche Indians and white settlers for control of the American West, centering on Quanah, the greatest Comanche chief of them all. They were so masterful at war and so skillful with their arrows and lances that they stopped the northern drive of colonial Spain from Mexico and halted the French expansion westward from Louisiana. Gwynne’s exhilarating account delivers a sweeping narrative that encompasses Spanish colonialism, the Civil War, the destruction of the buffalo herds, and the arrival of the railroads—a historical feast for anyone interested in how the United States came into being. In this engrossing chronicle, award-winning journalist Gwynne traces the rise of the Comanche people from their roots as primitive bands of hunter-gatherers to their mastery of the horse and emergence as the feared power brokers of the area. will leave dust and blood on your jeans.”-- New York Times Book Review "In Empire of the Summer Moon , Sam Swynne has given us a rich, vividly detailed rendering of an important era in our history and of two great men, Quanah Parker and Ranald Slidel Mackenzie, whose struggles did much to define it."

My family (white settlers) had settled in Oklahoma Territory from the Llano, Texas area before the turn of the century. We HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone wanting to know the true history of the west from both sides."
"The whole thing of the Europeans settling in the "new world" and subjugating and defeating the Indians. The horrible tit for tat, slaughter back and forth when the whole time the native Americans were doomed from the start. It is frustrating too that most if not all books on this subject come from research that was written by the hands of the white man. What if from the very beginning the native Americans had said, speaking to the white man, "We will join your society, worship your God and pursue the same education!""
"The life of Quanah Parker, a Comanche chief, is the focus of the book, and deserves to be."
"The book offers exceptional depth and detail of cultures, economics and tactics."
"This book is a terrific, if ultimately a sad read and I strongly recommend it!"
"While this book sometimes threatens to sink under the weight of detail (and runs out of material towards the end), it is a fascinating story about the last unconquered Native Americans and the Comanche way of life."
"He was the last chief of the Comanche, and when he finally surrendered and moved to a reservation, he quickly took to the white man's ways and became a financial success and a genuine celebrity."

Carney also enlists input from an Army scientist, a world-famous surfer, the founders of an obstacle course race movement, and ordinary people who have documented how they have cured autoimmune diseases, lost weight, and reversed diabetes. An ambitious blend of investigative reporting and participatory journalism, What Doesn't Kill Us explores the true connection between the mind and the body and reveals the science that allows us to push past our perceived limitations. Wheninvestigative journalist and anthropologist Carney heard about Hof'smind-boggling methods and claims that he could "hack" the human body, he knew he had to venture to Poland to expose this fraud. ― Booklist As this engaging autoethnography relates, anthropologist and investigative journalist Carney was skeptical upon encountering a photo of a nearlynaked Wim Hof sitting on a glacier in the Arctic Circle. ― Publishers Weekly On the heels of the paleo diet comes a new claim: taking on the physicalchallenges of the environment faced by our prehistoric ancestors canundo what easy calories and effortless comfort have done to ourbodies―made them fat, lazy, and weak. Expanding on his unnerving close-upaccount, the author also examines the research being done on the role of brown adipose tissue in the body and a variety of military and sportsmedicine training practices. He cites the anecdotal evidence of peoplewho have placed their faith in Hof and are convinced that his techniques have changed, if not saved, their lives―e.g., sufferers of Parkinson'sdisease, Crohn's disease, and rheumatoid arthritis. As a climax to hisaccount, Carney describes how, stripped to the waist, he accompanied Hof on a climb to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak.In the epilogue, the author asserts that his experiences showed him that "exposure to cold helps reconfigure the cardiovascular system, combatautoimmune malfunctions, and is a pretty darned good method to simplylose weight." Just be aware that people can be really resistant to this sort of knowledge because it runs so counter-intuitive to the drug-addicted culture we live in. Prescribed pill popping won't get you healthy, it merely manages different conditions and gives you more side effects than positive results in many cases. Just go to Wim Hof's youtube channel and look at all the testimonials of people who have diseases such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, Multiple Sclerosis, even deep skin burns."
