"Reading the history that led to "Fixer Upper" is fascinating, and it just makes me love the Gaineses and the show all the more. So The Magnolia Story is not a literary marvel, but it does appear to be true to who the authors are in real life (or at least on TV)."
"Chip and Joanna serve as role models for a marriage and individuals alike with their kind hearts and loving ways."
"I can't even imagine my husband making those kinds of decisions without my input, but their relationship comes off as very balanced despite these peculiarities."

Renovation 4th Edition: Completely Revised and Updated
As a founding editor of Fine Homebuilding magazine, the author of 12 acclaimed books, and a home renovator himself, Litchfield was able to record lifetimes of practical, field-tested solutions and trade secrets from the cream of the crop—the pros that other pros admire. Both first-time renovators and professionals who want to supplement their knowledge of specific trades will find Renovation 4th Edition invaluable. "a masterpiece" "-- Library Journal""Hands down, the best home renovation book...written in a down-to-earth conversational style that's comprehensive, practical and easy to understand."
Reviews
"I inherited the 2nd edition of this book from my father, and found it to be one of the most comprehensive books I've read on home renovation. The 1st and 2nd editions were published by Prentice Hall, and the 3rd and 4th by Taunton Press (the Fine Woodworking / Fine Homebuilding folks). That entire chapter is now titled 'Energy Conservation and Air Quality', and basically just discusses the latest insulation techniques that were found in Chapter 13 'Conserving Energy' in the 2nd edition. Judging from the Amazon Look Inside preview of the 3rd edition, this 4th edition is very similar but is more up-to-date and has more content, making this edition the one to get for the latest materials, tools and techniques. There is still plenty of useful content and detail in those earlier editions that is now gone from these latter two editions, particularly if you're renovating an older house."
"Since we are dealing with contractors ourselves, I have found this book helpful for reference so I at least know what the specifications should be and can talk with some confidence to the contractor. There isn't very much out there as far as reference for green technology and I live in an area where it is rather new to most contractors."
"My go to book back when I was a beginning rehabber."
"This is a great reference book for any home owner that wants to remodel a room or repair damage."
"When you find yourself reading the book for fun."
"Tons of useful info about maintaining, repairing, renovating and restoring a home."
"this book covers the foundation, the roof, and everything in between..."

In her new book, Better Than New: Lessons I’ve Learned from Saving Old Homes (And How They Saved Me) , Curtis opens up about her colorful, and sometimes troubling, past. “For the first time, Curtis pulls back the curtain of her life to reveal troubled relationships, how she rose from Hooters waitress to TV star, and the lessons she’s learned along the way. Filled with fun personal photos.” — The Detroit News , Best Home Books of 2016. Nicole Curtis is the host of the HGTV and DIY Network hit Rehab Addict , which has been on the air since 2010.

"This book gave you a good insight on where Nicole Curtis comes from and maybe some of her issues if you follow her pages."
"Being in the right place at the right time, Nicole pitched the show Rehab Addict, a show dedicated to restoring old and neglected homes back to their former splendor. Regardless of a reader's familiarity with the show, Better Than New is a very motivational look at the life of a woman who lives life on her own terms and fights hard for what she believes in."
"Having seen her shows, I found it neat that I could plug each life event or happenstance described with the episode or scene that it was related to."
"It's so much like her show, her personality shines through."
"I have enjoyed many episodes of "Rehab Addict" and was interested in the background of how she got into this and what goes on in the background of the show."

"I recommend this book to any one who is struggling to love their home because of clutter and lack of organization."
"I wasn't sure if it would be worth the money to buy it when I can get this information all over the Internet but I'm so glad I bought it."
"A welcome break from the rest of the minimalist decluttering books that are all about living with one shoe and one chair in an empty room."
"Next is my desk and then my business supply and tools hall and then the hall closet and steps to the garage (which I keep half of one step regularly covered."
"Minimalism is, at best, uncomfortable."
"The main thing that I've taken away from the different books that I've read on decluttering and minimalism--is find what works for you and start small, and take your time."
"Biggest weakness: The book is full of stereotypes, cliches, and generalizations."

Build Your Own Kitchen Cabinets
Superbly detailed, this step-by-step guide walks readers through the stages of planning, design, construction and installation. Danny Proulx opened his own custom kitchen-remodeling shop, Rideau Cabinets, in 1989.
Reviews
"I've been buying books on kitchen cabinet construction in anticipation of building some cabinets for my house. Looking past the style and materials, there are nice pictures of the construction process he uses, dimensions and decent information to build this style of cabinet. I think a good book on kitchen cabinet construction should cover different materials and construction techniques for building the cases, the pros/cons of each and the tools required for different approaches."
"which is the basic material for European style cabinets and this method also saves you a good deal of money over laminated hardwood faced plywood cabinets The melamine coating is also easy to clean and very strong, and the use of hidden hinges and adjustable legs make for easy installation, a time saving feature."
"This book is ok, but it's mostly aimed at someone wanting to build cabinet carcasses from melamine covered particle board and screwed corner joints."
"Cabinetmakers thinking of using this info commercially would benefit more from avoiding that race to the bottom with poor materials and cheap construction."
"There is some good information in the book but it was not worth the price for me."
"Basically, this book presents anatomy of standard, out of mill, unimaginative kitchen cabinets."
"If you really want to read something written by a pro, and with much better techniques (and results) I'd suggest you buy Building Kitchen Cabinets by Udo Schmidt."

Black & Decker Complete Guide to Wiring, 6th Edition: Current with 2014-2017 Electrical Codes
Simply put, you won’t find a more complete and up-to-date book on home wiring: from basic skills—including an overview of electricity and wiring safety; wire, cable, and conduits; boxes and panels; switches; and receptacles—to foolproof circuit maps for 30 common wiring set-ups and step-by-step walkthroughs of every essential home wiring and electrical repair project, this book teaches you everything you need to know. For a remodel, mark the mirror location, run cable, and position boxes before drywall installation. You can also retrofit by installing new boxes and drawing power from the existing fixture. The size of your mirror and its location on the wall may affect how far apart you can place the sconces, but 36" to 40" apart is a good guideline. Drywall saw, drill, combination tool, circuit tester, screwdrivers, hammer, electrical boxes and braces, vanity light fixtures, NM cable, wire connectors, eye protection. Make the opening large enough that you have room to route cable from the existing fixture to the boxes. Install the boxes about 66" above the floor and 18" to 20" from the centerline of the mirror (the mounting base of some fixtures is above or below the bulb, so adjust the height of the bracing accordingly).
Reviews
"The diagrams were the most helpful part of the book. This is not the book's fault, but it would have helped to know their labeling wouldn't match all brands."
"I wanted to know how three-way switches do their magic (it's the traveler wire), and I wanted to know tricks of the trade about how to put a switch in the middle of a "run" of lighting wires or at the end, and how would I properly tie into existing circuits."
"With this book I have learn so much about wiring my house have already done socket, wall switch, and run new wiring."

At Home: A Short History of Private Life
In these pages, the beloved Bill Bryson gives us a fascinating history of the modern home, taking us on a room-by-room tour through his own house and using each room to explore the vast history of the domestic artifacts we take for granted. With waggish humor and a knack for unearthing the extraordinary stories behind the seemingly commonplace, he examines how everyday items--things like ice, cookbooks, glass windows, and salt and pepper--transformed the way people lived, and how houses evolved around these new commodities. A visit to the kitchen prompts disquisitions on food adulteration and gluttony; a peek into the bedroom reveals nutty sex nostrums and the horrors of premodern surgery; in the study we find rats and locusts; a stop in the scullery illuminates the put-upon lives of servants.

"I even learned that Christopher Columbus didn't discover North America."
"They were grunts toiling in filth and disease, polluted by nonsensical myths and beliefs, oppressed by a shameless ruling class, often starved, often sent off to wars to die or become hideously maimed. I mean who the heck spits into ones handkerchief and then stuffs it back into one's pocket but a filthy pig! If you're an average American, you're in the top 1% of the world, so when's the last time you noticed a working class American open his wallet book for some poor peasant in Pakistan, Kenya, or Indonesia??? If you went back in time, a statistician would bet you would wind up being in the 99%, a peasant, but worse than today, because back then, without the development of media, the rich could do whatever they wanted with the peasants including all their children, and the peasants were lucky enough to live to adulthood with all the disease, war, filth, stress, and starvation. The rich ate well, the poor ate empty starches!!! But the true gem to this book is showing off how absolutely disgusting and horrible life was back in the day."
"Information about our homes that is very interesting and mostly unknown in today's world."
"Bill Bryson is incredible."
"Likewise, despite some eyebrow-lifting statements and the work's lack of citations, Bryson's genuine, almost boyish, delight in his stories and his exceptional gifts as a writer make it easy to forgive the book its literary transgressions."
"OK, I admit I'm a die-hard Bryson fan."
"Another great book from Bill Bryson!"
"I like Bryson a lot and have read most of his works."
