Reviews
"I bought this book in January 2016, after hearing an interview with Dr. Greger on a podcast. At first I found it hard to read, but not because it difficult or confusing, but because it was changing everything I thought I knew about food. By May 2016 I was miserable with my rash and still sitting at 204 lbs, despite my healthy lifestyle and consuming 1500 calories a day."
"for the person that wants to dig deeper, but in a style that has become uniquely his, Dr Greger uses quoted language from the papers to give an unitimidating explanation of the science contained within. He stands almost alone in a mass media that can't seem to get past the catchy titles, abstracts, and carefully worded, often misleading conclusions. The first 15 chapters (how not to die from..cancers, coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, etc..) are arranged based on easy to recognize conditions and though they are related can be read completely independent from one another. The book doesn't follow a chronology, so I found myself flipping through an early review copy reading small sections at a time. He doesn't give in to gluten or coconut oil just because it is popular or profitable and while some might find it frustrating, he sticks to the entire body of evidence not the latest single study. Finally, his "Daily Dozen" is a great place to begin implementing the message of bountiful health he enjoys teaching to anyone that will listen. In spite of all the economic momentum for more profitable and popular food, each year hundreds of articles surface on the benefits of adding more plant-based nutrition to one's diet for health and Dr Michael Greger seems to find them all."
"For the same price that would get me a week in the Caribbean sun, lying on deck of a cruise ship drinking margaritas, listening to reggae music and watching the waves go by, I was going to get a lighted probe stuck up my butt. The closer we stick to that, the healthier we become, and the more our bodies revert to their natural state of robust health rather than the sickly, wimpy physiques resulting from the Standard American Diet (SAD). The books' greatest strength is the thorough and objective research combined with Dr. Greger's ability to break complex and extensive information down into a language that even those of us artsy types who tried to dodge science in school can understand."

"Im not a believer of diets or drastic changes in you eating habits. When I turned 26 my weight started to change due to bad eating habits. I started watching what I was eating about two years ago, but loosing that extra weight hasn't been easy. I dont eat salty either, it became a habit after my dad got a heart surgery about ten years ago. My breakfast is usually tea with crackers, for lunch I like soup, and dinner varies. For the most part I cook a typical Hispanic meal: rice, beans, and some sort of meat. I decided to give this book a try not to achieve my ideal weight, I gave up on that a while ago. Giving up meats is not a challenge (I was vegetarian for about three years, until I developed rashes and a weak inmune system). You also get to eat hard boiled eggs, which I never ate those many before in my life hahaha. I also snack on fruits and veggies that are not part of the smoothy of the day, that way I do not loose motivation. Im drinking plenty of water which I always have, and a bought a variety of detox teas to switch flavors. Since a succesful end to my cleanse, I have continued with the modified version (2 smoothies and a HEALTHY meal). However, I am thinking about doing the cleanse again soon; not to lose weight, but to get rid of xmas/new yrs/vacation toxins :). I have to admit that my eating habits completely changed. By The way, on the weekends I rarely drink smoothies; I eat 2-3 meals and feel just fine. On another note, I gave a try to three different things mentioned in the book: sea-salt water flush (I add a lime to it to make it easier to drink) and oh my if I recommend it, it makes me feel digestively clean :). Finally, I did the liver cleanse (8oz water and 2tbs apple cider vinegar) and my waist has gotten thinner. Since, I bought another book with hundreds of green smoothie recipes. I like JJ Smith's recipes better because are less sweeter, but nonetheless, the other book helps me keep up with my routine too. Im totally in love with my new blender because I make 2-3 cups of the same smoothie at once. Im also very active in JJ Smith's twitter account because the program worked like a charm in my case. I love my new eating habits and how I feel in general, and thats all thanks to JJ Smith."
"I love this book it's very helpful."
"This is an awesome and very helpful book, i've lost 15 pounds on my first 10 days of this journey I thank GOD for JJ Smith for coming up with this life changing book and i highly recommend it to everyone who what to live a healthy life."
"I'm just an ordinary person."
"You can cleanse for 10 with green smoothie and 2 to 3 small portioned and recommend snacks or you can go with the intermittent options where you drink the green smoothie for breakfast and lunch then have a sensible dinner. With this 10 day green smoothie cleanse. "DAY 5 I WAS 10 LBS DOWN". DISLIKES: -The measurements for each smoothie was over the needed amount. - "100" green smoothie recipes besides the 10 day recipes which are broken down by aging, energy , constipation etc. I understand why the author put that smoothie at day 7, by day 7 you want a burger (LOL) but the smoothie is so good you figure I can keep drinking these green smoothies IF all the smoothies will taste as good as this 1 :) again ask me any questions."

"What is really motivating me is the fact that I lost 15 pounds and 10 overall inches in two weeks. I just wanted to let you guys know that there is a lot of cooking involved with this program. I'm actually tired of cooking, which is why I started making large meals to freeze for the week. I has been approximately four days since my previous review and I lost an additional 2 pounds on this journey. Update: So I just finished Day 23 of my Whole30 Journey and I feel good, aside from the fact that I caught a cold. I then measured myself and noted that I lost a total of 31.5 inches (-5" from chest, -2" from right arm, -3.5" from left arm, -8" from waist, -5" from hips, -4" from right thigh, and -4" from left thigh). I plan to have a celebratory dinner tonight (likely a gluten free pizza from papa Murphy's), then I will start my second round of whole30 tomorrow."
"i lost so much weight on this diet, did it for like a year."
"(Confession: I used to work out everyday but once I started the program I didn't have enough time to exercise so no, I didn't reach these results from hitting the gym; it's all about food.). You should give the program 100% effort and if you are too stressed, busy, or just don't have the time to make all of this homemade food you will probably get discouraged and fall off track."
"As one girl whined and moaned about not being able to chew gum, I naturally took that as a challenge and thought: I'll do this Whole30 and not be such a baby about it. I gained confidence, learned that I do have the ability to say "no" to food cravings, discovered a myriad of new recipes, cured all of my PCOS symptoms (regular menstrual cycles for the first time in ten years and no cysts), and as a bonus, dropped 2 pants sizes. As a child, I was in and out of the hospital with stomach pains and problems (I'll spare all the details) and after following Melissa & Dallas' Whole30, I ate sans stomach aches for the first time EVER. For my entire life eating a meal meant some level of pain/discomfort while my food digested. (Confession: I did, in fact, walk back and forth from my kitchen to my coffee table while I cooked tonight because I didn't want to risk getting food on the new pages. (If all else fails, you'll have a stunning book on display to let all your guests see how "healthy" you are.)."

"Had my blood work done Sept, 2013, results as followed: Total Cholesterol-231. HDL-78. LDL-131. Triglycerides-108. Read the book, made a list of the 10 guidelines, taped it to the wall near the kitchen sink, tweaked it to my liking. Took 2 tabs of Cholest-off daily (phytosterols). Took 2 tabs of organic Flaxseed oil daily. Ate almonds or an apple (or both) as a snack sometime during the day. Ate more spinach and mushrooms and garlic and veggies,(beets and cabbage clean the system). Ate more beans (not so great with that). Ate much less meat and dairy (which I had previously done, with little positive results). Drank a soy latte or some kind of soy shake (non GMO)..delicious!!! For the life of me, could not tolerate the psyllium husk. Continued to exercise, (either walk or zumba or pilates) about 3 times a week. Just received my new lab results, drawn March 2014 (6 months later), as followed: Total Cholesterol-186. HDL-78. LDL-94. Triglycerides-69. My 60th birthday is in 2 months."
"I had just turned 60 so I will admit that I was skeptical that it was possible to erase with any plan years of unhealthy eating, weight gain, lack of exercise and family history of heart disease. The recommended foods, like apples, almonds, beans, etc and supplements were easy to add to my daily life. Lunch was a large delicious apple and almonds. Dinner always included a large salad loaded with fresh vegetables, blueberries, strawberries, garbanzo beans, walnuts, almonds, and a drizzle of light balsamic vinaigrette. I began adding the supplements, especially the fiber, slowly as recommended by the author and drank lots of water, so I had no problems tolerating any recommended supplements. I was not able to find any of the plant stenol juice or milk that the author recommended-they are discontinued by Smart Balance and Minute Maid-so I relied solely on Benacol for all plant stenol additions."
"Going to give this book 4 stars instead of five just because it contains recipes which include chicken and shrimp, but I will say that after following as many of the recommendations that I was able/willing to, my cholesterol numbers improved dramatically (from bad, to outstandingly good) and I was able to stop taking cholesterol-lowering medications, which gave me extreme fatigue and muscle soreness."
"I was shocked to learn that I had dropped to 184 total Cholesterol...My doctor asked me what I did and I told him about this book."

Grain Brain: The Surprising Truth about Wheat, Carbs, and Sugar--Your Brain's Silent Killers
Groundbreaking and timely, Grain Brain shows that the fate of your brain is not in your genes, it's in the food you eat. He addresses the churlish objection that gluten has been part of the human diet for many millennia by firmly asserting that recent changes to crops have transformed a once-safe food into a terrible scourge. Lauded by such nonconsensus pundits as Mehmet Oz and William Davis, Perlmutter offers readers a comfortably simplistic model for thinking about carbs. Modern wheat, in particular, is responsible for destroying more brains in this country than all the strokes, car accidents, and head trauma combined. Dr. Perlmutter makes a persuasive case for this wheat-free approach to preserve brain health and functioning, or to begin the process of reversal." "If you want to boost your brain power, keep your memory, and lift your mood and energy, as well as heal from a host of other common complaints, Dr. Perlmutter is your guide. Grain Brain explains how the American diet rich in gluten and inflammatory foods is linked to neurological conditions. As a teacher and clinician, he has fundamentally changed how physicians and patients think about neurological degeneration and, happily, regeneration." "A galvanizing call to arms against a gluten-heavy diet....Perlmutter's credentials as a board-certified neurologist and American College of Nutrition Fellow make him a uniquely qualified voice in the debate about which foods are best for the brain and body." "Mind-blowing and disruptive to some long-standing beliefs about what our bodies require for optimal health...GRAIN BRAIN lays out an easy-to-understand roadmap packed with the latest science."

"One of the most successful many I ever met told me that, "the data talks"."
"I'm never hungry, I get to eat all kinds of meats and cheeses and veggies, and I don't even bother counting calories. The supplements he recommends have made an almost instant difference - my nails are stronger and growing long, my skin is better, and my overall mood is vastly improved."
"It changed everything I thought I knew about food and its relationship to health. You just eat what’s good for you: Fat - lots of it, meats, vegetables, eggs, cheese, salads, nuts, seeds (my new favorite snack is Pepitas, which they have at Publix). I eat a lot less than I used to because I’m getting enough fat in my diet, and not stuffing myself with useless breads, crackers, chips, and pasta – which just make me hungrier and hungrier. What I’ve gained are increased energy, lots less brain fog, joints moving better (do not hurt all the time), less headaches – a LOT less, tummy troubles are now non-existent, and before, I was always gaseous or had diarrhea, or just was hurting in general. My labs were checked in February, after just two months, and my doc was blown away. I was no longer in the diabetic range and my liver functions had normalized. He also has a good website with a lot of articles to read: [...] If you want your health back, it’s time to read, Grain Brain!"
"It is a sobering read, but is a must read if you are interested in maintaining good brain health and avoiding diseases such as Type II Diabetes, as well as potentially significantly reducing the risk of developing dementia and other brain disease."
"I overheard a couple of fellow Bikram yoginis discussing Dr. Perlmutter's current book "Brain Maker," and I decided to order both books."
"This book has answered what I haven't gotten from other Drs.. My skin is dry and hair thining, I truly needed more fat in my diet and now see that grains were my problem and low fat has starved my body of needed oils...."
"As Mark Twain commented on New England weather, "If you don't like the weather just wait a minute, it'll change," it seems the same holds true for medical/health research studies."

The Kind Diet: A Simple Guide to Feeling Great, Losing Weight, and Saving the Planet
In The Kind Diet, actress, activist, and committed conservationist Alicia Silverstone shares the insights that encouraged her to swear off meat and dairy forever, and outlines the spectacular benefits of adopting a plant-based diet, from effortless weight loss to clear skin, off-the-chart energy, and smooth digestion. She explains how meat, fish, milk, and cheese--the very foods we've been taught to regard as the cornerstone of good nutrition--are actually the culprits behind escalating rates of disease and the cause of dire, potentially permanent damage to our ecology. A dynamic fixture in the acting, political, and scientific communities, she is a dedicated advocate on behalf of the planet and its animals, and was voted "Sexiest Vegetarian Alive" in 2004.

"True, he sells his own supplements (which are excellent, by the way, pure and effective, but the book is for people who cannot afford them and these are suggestions of how to improve one's health for spending very little money. As for the bad reviews, I love to read them, because most of the time they start with "I am a doctor, nurse, pharmacist, I did not buy the book, but I know the book is crap, Shane is a con artist, and Quackwatch says it all" in a nutshell."
"Get it and read it.. you will be very surprised at the contents.. backs up with science, references, and a ton of eye opening information everyone should know.. take it with a grain of salt and BREATHE... start slow.. read the labels in your pantry, your vitamins and pain meds and yes even your food and personal care items and the world we live in now."
"I just finish this book and I know that it will change my life."
"Everyone that I gave them to love this book!"
"Over the Counter Natural Cures by Shane Ellison MS. Thanks to the draconian and unconstitutional "Gag Rule" by the FDA, nutritional supplement manufacturers are prohibited from informing the public about the supplements they make. The beauty of Shane Ellison's book is it fills in this censored information, discussing the top ten nutritional supplements and how they treat and prevent common illnesses. Preventing heart disease with statin drugs, Mr Ellison tells us, is a frustrating endeavor. For real prevention of heart disease, Mr. Ellison discards the cholesterol hypotheses as an unproven myth, and instead recommends lowering Homocysteine with a natural folic acid in Brewer's Yeast from Lewis Labs at Whole Foods, avoiding the Franken Chemical form of folic acid commonly found in cheap vitamins. For controlling blood pressure without drugs, Mr Ellison recommends herbal Hawthorne from GNC. Judging from its title, the book sounds too good to be true, yet Mr. Ellison is true to his mission, and delivers the goods, providing valuable information not otherwise available in the mass media or from supplement manufacturers thanks the FDA Gag rule."

Baby-led Weaning: Helping Your Baby to Love Good Food
Contrary to popular belief, there is no research that supports the current mainstream view that babies should be weaned by being spoon-fed purées. With practical tips for getting started and the low-down on what to expect, Baby-led Weaning explodes the myth that babies need to be spoon-fed and shows why self-feeding from the start is the healthiest way for your child to develop. "It sounds like common sense: after all, would you want to be strapped into a high chair and force-fed spoon after spoon of bland vegetables?

"Yes, your baby will be a mess every time they eat."
"4 out of 5 stars only because I found it a bit too long but I would still reccomend reading it for anyone with a baby, especially before 4 months as that's when some "baby experts" say you can start introducing solids."
"If you'd like to introduce this idea to a new parent, aren't certain when or how to start feeding your baby solids, or need support for when Grandma is horrified, this is the book to buy."
"This is how I imagine solids were introduced before food processors and pre-packaged baby food."
"I found this book very useful, as I have just started to wean my twin boys."
"Great book for getting started with baby led weaning."

Fiber Menace: The Truth About the Leading Role of Fiber in Diet Failure, Constipation, Hemorrhoids, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Ulcerative Colitis, Crohn's Disease, and Colon Cancer
Fiber Menace is for people who believe fiber prevents cancers, reduces the risk of heart disease, regulates blood sugar, wards off diabetes, lowers appetite, induces weight loss, cleanses the colon, and eliminates constipation.Tragically, none of it is true, and Fiber Menace explains why it's the complete opposite. Here are some of the most striking examples:- Fiber doesn't ward off colon cancer, according to the Harvard School of Public Health: "For years, Americans have been told to consume a high-fiber diet to lower the risk of colon cancer [...] Larger and better-designed studies have failed to show a link between fiber and colon cancer." The author's detailed description of the trauma imposed to the gastrointestinal mucosa by the expanding fiber is a vivid reminder that returning to the basics of GI function and logically thinking through what our bodies actually are designed to do with the food we eat, should be the first step on anyone's journey to recovery from digestive disorders.
Reviews
"I found Konstantin Monastyrsky's incredible book "Fiber Menace" by chance, while researching ways to heal myself from IBS. The book is enjoyable to read, and full of an incredible amount of information pertaining to all aspects of the digestive system."
"Explains why I have been feeling so awful."
"Why are doctor still in the dark."
"I bought the e-version, wished I had bought the physical book so I could study it easily."
"I bought this book because I have heard so much conflicting information about fiber and sugar and fats."
"I would say this man is genius and so opposite ideas from most doctors and nutritionist."
"A fabulously informative book for those seeking knowledge on how to achieve optimal digestive function, and a must read for those interested in the repair and recovery of the entire GI system."
"Today I can have 2-3 bowel movements every 24 hours thanks in large part to a low fiber diet of eggs, rice, soups, meat, and vrggie/fruit juice. I stil have a lot of one of Monastyrsky's products (Ageless Hydro C) but I haven't even had to use it except after business trips when I've been eating junk food with my coworkers. If I had listened to that doctor instead of discovering this book, I honestly believe I would have ended up comitting suicide after having at least part of my colon removed. I should also mention that daily vitamins, probiotic pills and vegetable juice have played a large part in my return to normal health (and I do drink hot green tea morning and night even though the author discourages it). I am sure there was some irreversible damage done to my colon as the urge to go is never as strong as it used to be when I was a kid but thank you for giving me my life back, Dr. Monastyrsky."

While using herbs can often seem complicated or costly, this book offers a way to learn that’s as simple and inexpensive as cooking dinner. With the guidance of herbalist Rosalee de la Forêt , you’ll understand how to match the properties of each plant to your own unique needs, for a truly personalized approach to health for you and your family. In addition to offering dozens of inspiring recipes, Rosalee examines the history and modern-day use of 29 popular herbs, supporting their healing properties with both scientific studies and in-depth research into herbal energetics. Drawn in by the abundant, delicious recipes, you may come to this book as a home chef, but you will leave as an herbalist, transformed by the power of Rosalee’s alchemy.” — Guido Masé , author of The Wild Medicine Solution and DIY Bitters. And now, by combining ancient wisdom with modern scientific understanding, Rosalee de la Forêt helps you put nature’s pharmacy to work. “It’s rare to find a writer who can describe complex ideas with such clarity and skill that anyone can grasp their subject— Rosalee de la Forêt is one of those souls. “I first met Rosalee de la Forêt several years ago and was immediately impressed with her knowledge, passion for herbal medicine, and ability to clearly communicate this information. “So many books geared toward those just beginning to explore the world of medicinal plants offer very basic ‘take this herb for that problem’ information, under the assumption that the foundational underpinnings of herbalism are somehow ‘too hard’ for beginners to grasp. Here, in plain English, Rosalee de la Forêt shows us that the way that herbalists choose herbs for individual people with particular imbalances isn’t some magical power or a skill attainable only by those who can devote their lives to intense study. As an experienced educator and practitioner, she weaves together tradition, experience, and science to present a holistic view of each of the plants, while providing specific and practical advice for how you can bring them into your home and life. This is a book you will want to leave sitting out on your desk, coffee table, and kitchen counter, all at the same time.” — Kristine Brown, RH(AHG) , herbalist and author/illustrator of Herbal Roots Zine. Rosalee de la Forêt 's sophisticated approach and her personal experience with herbs comes through in her beautiful recipes, which eloquently combine food and herbal medicine. She unveils the enchanting, yet readily accessible world of herbalism that makes me fall right back in love with the plant kingdom; and you will too!” — Dina Falconi , herbalist and author of Foraging & Feasting: A Field Guide and Wild Food Cookbook. “In her wonderfully written book, Alchemy of Herbs , Rosalee de la Forêt encourages the reader to 'break free from the insanity of the One-Solution Syndrome' by choosing personalized herbal formulations based on what our own senses tell us our bodies need. Self-empowerment begins in the kitchen as Rosalee tempts us with dozens of mouth-watering recipes and encourages us to ‘move forward with the mind-set of an explorer.’ Those new to plant-based healing as well as experienced herbalists will find that this beautifully illustrated book exemplifies the heart and soul of herbal healing through delicious food as powerful medicine.” — Jeff Carpenter , author of The Organic Medicinal Herb Farmer: The Ultimate Guide to Producing High-Quality Herbs on a Market Scale. Rosalee de la Forêt shares concepts like energetics and taste in such a way that makes it easier for people to understand them, and how to find which herbs are best for them as individuals. Her book is unique in that it explains both the chemistry and the energetics of medicinal herbs and at the same time introduces their use in a friendly and inviting way.” — Holly Bellebuono , author of The Healing Kitchen and The Essential Herbal for Natural Health. “ Rosalee de la Forêt 's book is an excellent introduction to the energetics and science behind the use of our most common culinary and medicinal herbs, providing the reader with a solid foundation for further learning and exploration.” — Todd Caldecott, Dip.

"The foundational content includes an explanation about how herbs serve individuals unlike our current system of One Solution Syndrome for everyone (take a pill for this and then take a pill for that), a well-explained overview of the energetics of herbs and deep dive into the tastes of herbs - which is my favorite part. Another aspect I like about the recipes is that they are all very doable: no specialized equipment, no huge orders of exotic herbs and spices and no tricky culinary skills required. She also employs safety and caution and gives specific examples of what some herbs can do (because yes, they really work!)."
"And of course that "new book smell" Just knowing some Herbs and ID'ing them is one thing, but learning ways to actually USE them (aside from plain old tisanes, tinctures and salves) is a real treasure!"
"This is an awesome, thorough book on herbs, health, natural remedies, healthy recipes and foods that heal. If you suffer from a chronic health condition like inflammation or diabetes, this book covers those issues as well as helpful natural remedies for treating them. I love that the book is so current, and it really gives insight into the actions of different herbs and foods on our minds amd bodies."
"Love Love Love this book!!"
"I started adding more pepper to my meals knowing I was increasing the availability and absorption of vital nutrients from my foods, I put cinnamon in my tea."

"Biology went over mitosis and meiosis, but rather unclear and it didn't call the phases what it asks for on the exam, so learn those from another source (G1, etc.). This book gives you the vague overview of what would be on the exam, and it's up to you to fill in the more detailed bits...which is ridiculous. It's free, although you can unlock a full version for $12 or $13, I don't remember, and the practice tests are awesome. The best thing you can actually do is get this book, get the app, and make sure to take some peppermints and earplugs with you because the clicky-clack of other people pressing mouses and computer keys WILL get on your nerves."
"Elsevier's Hesi Admission Assessment Exam Review is an excellent comprehensive guide that includes eight concise sections that are featured in the exam; this guide is easy to navigate as well."
"Brand new book and very helpful for studying great source of info for the HESI exam."
"The book is good."
"This did help me on some of the subjects to study for the HESI exam."
"The review is alright, although I can't seem to find out how to access the online material."
"This book is basically the same as the later HESI books."

"She had initially told me she was reluctant to buy this book because she was afraid she would read it and be scared about the pregnancy and all potential bad things that could happen when you read about too many things. It's full of practical information every first time mother should read."
"This book is a MUST for expecting moms - new or repeats."
"A good book for first time moms, though there are not any references in the book so it often led me to believe it was personal biases rather than scientific information."

"Still don't quite understand how food has that kind of impact on the body but the proof was undeniable. When you walk into an ER and the doctors remember you and know how to treat you off of their memory it is pretty sad. My other friend no longer clears his throat that he did repeatedly for 10 years. in fact, after three months of being on type O strictly if I have something with corn starch my body and my friend's body reacts immediately...head pressure, sinus pressure it is crazy. Not all avoid foods will my body react to dramatically but there are key ones it will and I am like I should not have eaten that. I love pizza with just a little olive oil, crushed garlic, feta, spinach, no sauce, kalamata olives, maybe some red onions...my favorite...before I loved cheese pizza but not no more. My body literally craves type O food it is absolutely mind blowing. I bought the app on my iPhone so when in the grocery store I just quickly look up an item as type O can have mushrooms but some mushrooms are on my avoid list so I just click on the app as I can never remember which one and know immediately what to buy and what not too."
"I first found this book in high school and my mom said I was an A blood type so I concentrated on vegetarian foods. I was happy to do this because it was in the 90's and all my teen magazines promoted low fat and vegetarian diets and of course, I wanted to be like the models. He was so sure that I had it, he sent me to another hospital in another town to have the test retaken because he thought the staff was bad at the first place. Of course, dietetic school said this was a fad diet so I went on a dietary guidelines plan. 'Fast forward a year out of school, I discovered the paleo diet and my whole world was better. My mom was managing a health food store at the time and she had blood type supplements on her shelf. He loves protein shakes and I don't push meat on him because I know your body will naturally like what it needs. I saw 5 OBGYN's and I told them all my theory that I was reacting to the blood of the baby and they all thought I was nuts. After I delivered I still believed the reason I was so sick in pregnancy was because of the blood type difference. Years later I read in one of Dr. D Adamo's books that he supports that theory of the most difficult pregnancies are usually type O mom's with A babies because they are opposite in dietary needs."
"I advocate the diet and the book."

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
Now an HBO® Film starring Oprah Winfrey and Rose Byrne #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER. Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. Amazon Best Books of the Month, February 2010 : From a single, abbreviated life grew a seemingly immortal line of cells that made some of the most crucial innovations in modern science possible. Henrietta Lacks was a mother of five in Baltimore, a poor African American migrant from the tobacco farms of Virginia, who died from a cruelly aggressive cancer at the age of 30 in 1951. A sample of her cancerous tissue, taken without her knowledge or consent, as was the custom then, turned out to provide one of the holy grails of mid-century biology: human cells that could survive--even thrive--in the lab. Meanwhile, Henrietta's family continued to live in poverty and frequently poor health, and their discovery decades later of her unknowing contribution--and her cells' strange survival--left them full of pride, anger, and suspicion. Jad Abumrad is host and creator of the public radio hit Radiolab , now in its seventh season and reaching over a million people monthly. Just the simple facts are hard to believe: that in 1951, a poor black woman named Henrietta Lacks dies of cervical cancer, but pieces of the tumor that killed her--taken without her knowledge or consent--live on, first in one lab, then in hundreds, then thousands, then in giant factories churning out polio vaccines, then aboard rocket ships launched into space. The cells from this one tumor would spawn a multi-billion dollar industry and become a foundation of modern science--leading to breakthroughs in gene mapping, cloning and fertility and helping to discover how viruses work and how cancer develops (among a million other things). But what's truly remarkable about Rebecca Skloot 's book is that we also get the rest of the story, the part that could have easily remained hidden had she not spent ten years unearthing it: Who was Henrietta Lacks? (1999)Main Street in downtown Clover, Virginia, where Henrietta was raised, circa 1930s.Margaret Gey and Minnie, a lab technician, in the Gey lab at Hopkins, circa 1951.Deborah with her children, LaTonya and Alfred, and her second husband, James Pullum, in the mid-1980s.In 2001, Deborah developed a severe case of hives after learning upsetting new information about her mother and sister.Deborah and her cousin Gary Lacks standing in front of drying tobacco, 2001.The Lacks family in 2009.

"This was a great book that I'm so glad I read."
"In “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks,” Rebecca Skloot introduces us to the “real live woman,” the children who survived her, and the interplay of race, poverty, science and one of the most important medical discoveries of the last 100 years. Skloot narrates the science lucidly, tracks the racial politics of medicine thoughtfully and tells the Lacks family’s often painful history with grace. When science appears, it does so effortlessly, with explanations of cell anatomy or techniques like “fluorescence in situ hybridization” seamlessly worked into descriptions of the coloured wards of Johns Hopkins hospital to Lacks’s hometown of Clover, Virginia. And yet for all its grand scope, skilful writing and touching compassion, there is one simple element that makes As a final thought, I was struck by the parallels between Henrietta’s cells and her story."
"This decisive, detailed, superbly written history of the HeLa cells that have played such a highly significant role in many arenas of medical research delves deeply into both the scientific and personal stories of Henrietta Lacks and her family."
"A legacy, kept hidden for over 20+ years from Henrietta Lack's family and those of us,who are not privy to the inner circles of the medical and science community."
"Skloot did a terrific job spending years gathering information from the family and researching scientific discoveries related to the cells."
"Incredible true story of a woman's legacy, from the usage of her DNA without consent, to the medical miracles her stolen contribution made, to the injustices her family faced decades later."
"The book, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks was a very interesting and informative read."
"One of the most amazing books I have ever read."
