The stories of artists like Katy Perry, Britney Spears, and Rihanna, as well as expert songsmiths like Max Martin, Stargate, Ester Dean, and Dr. Luke, The Song Machine shows what life is like in an industry that has been catastrophically disrupted—spurring innovation, competition, intense greed, and seductive new products. John Seabrook combines a love of music and an appreciation for personalities to take us on a starry journey from Stockholm and London to New York and Orlando showing how creativity gets discovered, polished, and packaged. -- Walter Isaacson, author of 'The Innovators' and 'Steve Jobs'. Runnin' with the Devil: A Backstage Pass to the Wild Times, Loud Rock, and the Down and Dirty Truth Behind the Making of Van Halen
The manager who shepherded Van Halen from obscurity to rock stardom goes behind the scenes to tell the complete, unadulterated story of David Lee Roth, Eddie Van Halen, and the legendary band that changed rock music. A man who’d worked with some of rock’s biggest and most notorious names, Monk spent seven years with Van Halen, serving initially as their tour manager then as their personal manager until 1985, when he and David Lee Roth exited as controversy, infighting, and egos consumed the band. Lifting back the curtain on one of the great untold stories of rock music, Monk details the most outrageous escapades from his time as confidant, fixer, and promoter—from hotel room destruction to outrageous backstage behavior to Eddie Van Halen’s high-profile marriage to Valerie Bertinelli to the incredible drug use and drinking that would ultimately fuel the conflict between the band members.
Reviews
"Anytime I can listen to live recordings from that era or read about their dominance of rock 'n' roll from 1978 thru 1985, I do so eagerly. I always knew DLR was a narcissistic egomaniac, and that the VH brothers had hard fought lifelong battles with alcoholism, but this book surprised me with how deeply Alex/Edward spiraled into their addictions, or just how much Dave became full of himself to the point that he was downright mean and intolerable to be around. If you want an honest behind-the-scenes look at the rise and fall of the one of greatest rock 'n' roll bands of all time, then read this book."
"He was there when they guys were making $750 a show and up to the mega-break-up fueled by rampant drug/alcohol use, ego trips, jealousy and frustration over musical direction. This book was a crazy ride inside the VH juggernaut of the Roth-era. They have been a train-wreck from the start, but were able to play through it without the fans really knowing much about the wild animal that is VH."
"Noel Monk was Van Helen's tour manager and after that manager from 78 till 84, so you bet he knows a lot stories from the band."
"Noel Monk, thank you!"
"The book is more about the manager's role in bringing the band to fame rather than the band members themselves."
"A great look on the inside of one of the best bands of all time."
"If you're a Van Halen fan, you'll be captivated by the stories told by Noel Monk, as only he could tell them."
"Quick shipper and great price."

Making Rumours: The Inside Story of the Classic Fleetwood Mac Album
Inside the making of one of the biggest-selling albums of all time: Fleetwood Mac's Rumours Fleetwood Mac's classic 1977 Rumours album topped the Billboard 200 for thirty-one weeks and won the Album of the Year Grammy. Ken Caillat is an active record producer nominated for two Grammy's and his Daughter, Colbie Caillat is a 2 time Grammy nominee and has just released her 5th album this week, a Christmas album titled Christmas in the Sand. Maybe its Caillat's easy manner, his perfect recall, the way he completely opens up about the mid 70s in California & brings the reader along for the journey. But Making Rumours is also about creating the music & here is where Caillat shines as he lovingly illustrates in detail how the songs of this seminal Grammy-winning album were birthed. "Producer-engineer Ken Calliat tells the story behind "Rumours" like a taut Hollywood screenplay, rich with crisis, conflict and confrontation in possibly the best book yet about the recording studio. Producer Ken Caillat has a brilliant book coming out on the making of Rumours, but ahead of its release, he spoke to me about how he tracked the mega disc cut-by-cut."

"Being a particular huge fan of Stevies song 'silver springs' that got cut from the album because of its long length, i was really glad to hear Kens reasoning and respect for what in my opinion would have been one of fleetwood macs biggest hits, if it could have replaced daddy or dont want to know."
"If you are a Fleetwood Mac fan, a rock and roll fan or a classic album fan, this is a pretty good read with some great stories and some nice insight into the recording world, obviously of course for this album in particular (which is great for all of us techies and music nerds)."
"As a musician and a fan, I found his insight amazing."
"Those of us with home studios can aspire to create a spaceship-like workspace with no parallel walls!"
"It's a really gripping account of how the album was made, who the members of Fleetwood Mac really are, and how the music industry works."
"This is an excellent book that not only goes behind the scenes of the interpersonal relationships during the recording of the album, which were incredible enough, but the creative process in the making of the album."
"Excellent."
"Great insight into the technical and human aspects of recording a phenomenally talented band."

The Autobiography of Gucci Mane
” — Complex “A cautionary tale that ends in triumph.” — GQ “A revelation and a welcome addition to hip-hop’s literary legacy.” — All Hip Hop. Born in rural Bessemer, Alabama, Radric Delantic Davis became Gucci Mane in East Atlanta, where the rap scene is as vibrant as the dope game. He inspired and mentored a new generation of artists and producers: Migos, Young Thug, Nicki Minaj, Zaytoven, Mike Will Made-It, Metro Boomin. In his extraordinary autobiography, the legend takes us to his roots in Alabama, the streets of East Atlanta, the trap house, and the studio where he found his voice as a peerless rapper. There are scenes from Gucci Mane’s new autobiography that seem better fit for a gripping Oscar drama than for the story of a guy who recently won his first MTV Video Music Award.” —GQ “A captivating dive into the mind of Radric Davis. The book provides incredible insight into one of the most influential rappers of the last decade, detailing a volatile and fascinating life . By the end, every reader will have a greater understanding of Gucci Mane, the man and the musician.” —PITCHFORK “A story of black manhood in the American South as never described before. Even while incarcerated, Gucci remained a cult hero to a generation that reached far beyond the Southern city where his influence first blossomed. —HIGHSNOBIETY “Gucci Mane’s story is one of reinvention.” —PEOPLE.COM “Highly-anticipated . a serious look inside his major life struggles and triumphs.” —BILLBOARD “Inspirational.” —THE SOURCE “The Autobiography of Gucci Mane, written with music journalist Neil Martinez-Belkin, quietly defies the conventions of the celebrity memoir genre; in parts, it reads like what I can only describe as pop culture poetry. riveting, filled with music-world intrigue and inner-city shootouts and buoyed by a self-awareness not marred by ego.” —PUBLISHERS WEEKLY “Gucci Mane managed to turn his entire life around and penned that ascent in his newest memoir . a well-rounded portrait.” —REVOLT TV “Gucci’s family life, drug dealing and arrests — as well as the perfection of a musical style that would help elevate the careers of a slew of young Southern artists such as Migos, Young Thug and Zaytoven — are on full display in the new The Autobiography of Gucci Mane . the trap king’s roots, and his past, remain close to his head and his heart.” —THE UNDEFEATED “ Autobiography buzzes with the grandeur and grittiness that Gucci is known for, and some of that can be attributed to the music journalist Neil Martinez-Belkin, who co-wrote it.” —THE OUTLINE “As entertaining as anything Gucci has ever made . The entire book feels less like an autobiography but rather a conversation . something moving and meaningful, much more so than the usual 'hustler to rapper' story.” —SWGRUS “ The Autobiography of Gucci Mane is about growth, resilience and how no matter the setback, Gucci Mane is always prepared to come back harder than ever before. the many lessons Gucci Mane endured and shared in this autobiography can be valued by us all.” —ESSENCE “Better than any urban novella, the book is an exemplary account of the life and times of Radric Davis from Bessemer, Alabama—otherwise known as Gucci Mane.” —NEWSWEEK “His book brings a fuller worldview to the rhymed version of the biography he’s previously shared.” —PACIFIC STANDARD “The Autobiography of Gucci Mane is Gucci’s greatest redemption song . His autobiography shines because we get to see an emotionally intelligent Gucci. Given Gucci’s influence on this generation and its rappers, as well as neighborhood pushers from inner-city dwellings around the country, his newly debuted book is poised to inspire rappers and men like myself to give more thought to mental health, drug use and the kind of lives we want to lead.”. — VIBE “ The Autobiography of Gucci Mane is written with an appealing matter-of-factness, and it helps to replace myth with something closer to the real story.”. — THE NEW YORKER Gucci Mane, born Radric Delantic Davis, is a critically acclaimed, platinum-selling recording artist. Iggy Pop, Richard Hell, the Ramones, and scores of other punk figures lend their voices to this decisive account of that explosive era. Every Little Step: My Story
In the late 1980s, the former front man of New Edition had a wildly successful solo career—especially with the launch of Don't Be Cruel —garnering multiple hits on the Billboard top ten list, as well as several Grammy, American Music, and Soul Train awards. Raw and powerful, Every Little Step is the story of a man who has been on the top of the mountain and in the depths of the valley and who is now finally ready to talk about his career and family life, from the passion and the excess to his creative inspirations and massive musical success. In this raw and at times heartbreaking account, Bobby Brown tells the truth of his life. Brown reveals what really happened when he left New Edition to launch his solo career and shares tales of his relationships with some of the most prominent pop divas in the world, including intimate moments in his marriage to Whitney Houston that describe the purity of their love and the devastation he felt as it crumbled over drug abuse, infidelities, and the negative influence of outsiders. Most poignantly, he finally speaks about losing his beloved daughter, Bobbi Kristina, and the terrible aftermath of her death.

No Woman No Cry: My Life with Bob Marley
By the age of 18, Rita was an unwed mother, and it was then that she met Bob Marley at a recording studio in Trench Town. Bob and Rita became close friends, fell in love, and soon, she and her girlfriends were singing backup for the Wailers. But while Rita displayed blazing courage, joy, and an indisputable devotion to her husband, life with Bob was not easy. Written with author Hettie Jones, No Woman No Cry is a no-holds-barred account of life with one of the most famous musicians of all time. Fans of reggae legend Bob Marley will welcome this no-nonsense biography from his wife, Rita, who was also his band member, business partner, musical collaborator and the only person to have witnessed firsthand his development from local Jamaican singer to international superstar. Aided by poet and memoirist Jones (How I Became Hettie Jones), Rita presents the powerful details of her early life story: her youth in the Trench Town ghetto of Kingston, Jamaica, living with "thugs, thieves, killers, prostitutes, gamblers"; her encounters with the early "Wailing Wailers"; and how her relationship with Bob cemented as they spent days recording in Dodd's Studio One. Throughout, this memoir emphasizes Rita's own substantial musicianship, first as part of Bob Marley's backing vocalists, the I-Threes, and later her own career after his death "carrying on a legacy that means so much to the world."

Reviews
"It’s great to know that Ryan has a desire to make a change in his life and wants to be “Better.” However, what saddens me most is to know that this mother and son bond that I thought would last forever took a turn for the worst."
"Second, the influence that one person (in Ryan’s case, his first voice teacher) can have over another’s life is immense. My only criticism of the book is the author’s choice to include details of the voice teacher’s last days."
"It's always a joy to read about those talented courageous people who overcome horrendous obstacles to find success and happiness."
"An amazing saga of a young man living in poor neighborhoods with family problems who rises above it all due to his amazing voice."
"This was a very interesting story of a young black man who discovered opera and his own voice and how he overcame great odds on this very difficult path to a career in music."
"Ryan Green demonstrates what can be done with a lot of natural talent and even more dedicated support -- and a lot of luck. Few will have his level of innate ability, but most of us have enough to make a contribution when given a lot of chances."
"Was a child when the story starts in is poor and with a single mom.As he grows up he has many problems with school and some with the law."

Reviews
"What I like MOST about this book is, it is SIMPLE in it's instruction and approach, yet the ideas are really rooted in musical theory. I have a TON of books that do, and end up putting those down because I'm just not there most of the time on concepts, and I JUST LIKE PLAYING GUITAR. Some of the reasons I like it are: there are a LOT of examples in each chapter, and they progress at a manageable pace. I feel like I know what I'm talking about as I've purchased about 30 instruction books trying to find something that works for ME."
"I began taking lessons and began to experiment with different playing styles. That is to say, they approach a topic with a little bit of instruction and then move on to the next topic. He would approach a large topic, present a little bit of instruction, and then follow it up with succeeding lessons, each building on what was presented before."
"This book showed me a variety of different altered 7th, 9th, and 13th chords that I could play anywhere on the guitar."
"I wanted the entire series immediately but I know I'd just jump into the middle of book two and try to understand pieces hoping to get the entire books worth of learning very quickly."
"There are many positive reviews for this book (which is why I ultimately purchased it), and they're all accurate, but one aspect I think needs to be stressed more is that it that the method of instruction is FUN."
"This book is a must if you want to learn to play the blues."

Heaven and Hell: My Life in the Eagles (1974-2001)
Now band member and guitarist Don Felder finally breaks the Eagles’ years of public silence to take fans behind the scenes. "An entertaining tell-all."
Reviews
"I recently read that Don was the highest earnings musician last year."
"I would have loved to hear more details about the other Eagles and their journey (especially Joe Walsh). It's true what they say about their music that "people did things" to the Eagles - many of my major life events are mapped to some of their songs."
"I dare say that this time Hell will have to freeze over before Don Henley and Glen Frey would ever consider bringing Fingers back to the band."
"One of the main reasons the Eagles were so successful in their transition from their easy listening music to their more Rock oriented Sounds. As the sole writer of the music for Hotel California, the Eagles biggest hit ever, Don's talent shines through!!! Frey and Henley, on their own merit, decided because they were the main song writers, that they should get the lions share of the profits. Don Felder had every right to question the spending and request his share of the profits in an equal partnership. How they got away with kicking him out, I don't know the legalities of, but it's a darn good thing he had a contract as an equal owner of The Eagles, Inc. As a guitar player myself, Don Felder's lesson on YouTube on Hotel California, is amazing. The YouTube video of Don Felder expressing his regrets about not being able to work things out with Frey are sincere and very sad."
"I think Don Felder contributed a great deal to the Eagles and could have contributed more if "The Gods" (Henley and Frey) had let him."
"I'm not normally into Biographys, but after seeing the documentary, "The History of the Eagles" on Netflix, and loving it, I wanted to hear Felder's side."
"For me, I could not put the book down and I think any Eagles fan will feel the same."

Reviews
"Tamara Saviano has captured the essence of Guy Clark not only because of all her hard work and detailed research but because she has taken the time to get to know Guy, Suzanna and so many of their friends in a close and intimate way."
"I picked this book up on vacation and couldn't put it down."
"Fans of Guy Clark, fans of the Texas, Nashville, U.S. and World songwriting scene should be very grateful that this author came along at the right time, gained the intellectual and emotional acceptance of Guy Clark, and was able to weigh and compose a very insightful piece of him, his life, and his impacts."
"After I finished, he embraced me and would not release me... like a father or grandfather... he whispered words I can't remember but that I do know were deeply encouraging and spoken with deep affectiion."
"Any music lover would appreciate this book, and anyone interested in the Outlaw Country or Alternative, Singer-Songwriter kind of music already knows Guy Clark, as I have for many, many years."
"There is no doubt that you too will be pleasantly surprised by the detail of the history of a man, his wife, and their best friend."

"I really appreciate who recommended me this because it allows me learn at my own pace and fully enjoy the experience of playing the piano and not have to worry about paying for private lessons."
"When I first opened up the book to chapter 1 I was able to get right to work. This book is for everyone!!!! I recommend this book to anyone trying to learn piano!!"
"I have never played any kind of instrument but I have always had a desire to play piano and this instructional book makes it very easy for me."
"The book will help you learn how to play piano, but it definitely would need to be paired with a book of songs so that the technique can be applied to the songs in order to actually learn to play more than just some scales. This book could help someone teach themselves how to play piano, but I personally recommend using the book, videos, and having a personal teacher."

The Long Hard Road Out of Hell
Now, in his shocking and candid memoir, he takes readers from backstage to gaol cells, from recording studios to emergency rooms, from the pit of despair to the top of the charts, and recounts his metamorphosis from a frightened Christian schoolboy into the most feared and revered music superstar in the country. One doesn't usually think of rock stars as insightful, but, against all odds, glam-trash superstar Marilyn Manson has written a book that is actually an intelligent look at growing up. This autobiographical bildungsroman brings out the creepiest aspects of childhood, conveying the terror and fascination that young Marilyn (then called Brian) felt when looking through his grandfather's pornography, getting his first French kiss, and being taunted by the girls he wanted to "date." This gives him an incredibly broad perspective, which he brings to bear on his ordinary life in order to convey the more potent and frightening moments that shaped him into the pale-skinned weirdo that the Christian Right loves to hate. Best of all, Manson is shockingly honest, and portrays himself as occasionally stupid, self-centered, over-sensitive, ignoble, and, mostly, highly fallible and human. --James DiGiovanna "By turns moving, funny, appalling, and disturbing...There has never been anything like it."

"Arrived in great condition and on time."
"Especially enjoyed being reminded of how gauche and pretentious the USA was during the 90's while reading over the "Rumours" and diary entries towards the end."
"The adventures he jad as a child groomed him to want society to opeb their eyes to the hipocracy that is tje norm today."
"My hope for you is that after reading this book you understand the author better than you did before."
"Many people are not aware of how actually intelligent this man is, which honestly if anyone just takes the time to actually listen to his lyrics and watch him during interviews they will see the reason behind his madness."
"Albeit a typical rock-n-roll biography, there's (thankfully) a clear and fresh mentality swimming in the muck of Mason's head."
"This book was everything I expected from Marilyn Manson: the messy, creepy family, disturbing childhood, an unbridled need for attention."
"Its a fun read that will gross you out, shock you and make you laugh till you cry."

"HERE’S WHY: The words and music are presented as sheet music, but each line is a separate image. If I enlarge the first line of words and music so I can read them in Kindle on my iPad mini, when I get to the end of the line I must then close that image and go through the process of enlarging the next line."

The Study Quran: A New Translation and Commentary
Drawn from a wide range of traditional Islamic commentaries, including Sunni and Shia sources, and from legal, theological, and mystical texts, The Study Quran conveys the enduring spiritual power of the Quran and offers a thorough scholarly understanding of this holy text. This painstaking work will do much to enlighten and inform the reading strategies of all who seek to understand the Holy Writ of Islam, especially as it relates to the beliefs and practices of Muslims.” (Sherman A. Jackson, King Faisal Chair of Islamic Thought and Practice, The University of Southern California). “A huge and significant scholarly undertaking, a major service to Islamic studies. “An extraordinary scholarly achievement, The Study Quran brings the text to life, gently guiding readers into the exciting interpretive worlds of Muslims in all of their rich diversity.” (Zareena A Grewal, PhD, professor of Religious Studies at Yale University). Whether the reader is a novice to the Quranic text, longtime student, or scholar, they will find much to reflect upon in this extraordinarily valuable resource.” (Kristin Zahra Sands, Harlequin Adair Dammann Chair in Islamic Studies, Sarah Lawrence College). “ The Study Quran represents a breakthrough for bringing the message of the Quran to the English-speaking world. With analytical depth and clarity, it offers to both specialist and general readers, Muslim and non-Muslim, uniquely learned insights into the reception and interpretation of Islam’s sacred scripture within the various Muslim intellectual and spiritual traditions.” (Sebastian Günther, Professor and Chair of Arabic and Islamic Studies, University of Göttingen, Germany). “A magnificent scholarly achievement, The Study Quran offers an eminently readable, thought-provoking and nuanced understanding of Islam’s sacred text that will help both Muslims and non-Muslims appreciate the richness and diversity of understandings of the Quran throughout the ages.” (Shafique N. Virani, Distinguished Professor of Islamic Studies, University of Toronto). The wealth of detailed information it contains makes The Study Quran a valuable text in understanding the centrality of the Quran and its role in shaping the spiritual and mundane lives of Muslims.” (Liyakat Takim, Sharjah Chair in Global Islam, McMaster University). “The publication of The Study Quran is a joyous occasion for all scripture lovers: a new English translation that celebrates the dignity and formality of sacred discourse, running commentary, and, as a very special signature, compelling and deeply instructive essays by fifteen of today’s leading scholars on Islam.” (Peter Ochs, Bronfman Professor of Modern Judaic Studies, University of Virginia). “A monumental milestone in the study of the Quran in western academia and a veritable touchstone of authenticity for all who are asking: what does the Quran actually say? Indeed a massive, unprecedented undertaking.” (Mohammad Hassan Khalil, Associate Professor of Islamic Studies and Director of the Muslim Studies Program, Michigan State University). “A work of extraordinary significance, The Study Quran makes accessible in English Islam’s sacred scripture along with an array of material necessary to appreciate the nuances of the text. “ The Study Quran will remain for many decades to come the key reference work in English for students of Islamic Studies and scholars of religion alike, as well as ordinary readers interested in the spiritual content, historical context and literary monument of the revelation of Islam.” (Dr. Leonard Lewisohn, Senior Lecturer in Persian, University of Exeter, U.K.). “ The Study Quran is a milestone in Islamic studies. “ The Study Quran will be an essential book for every English speaking student of Islam and every Muslim (and every Sufi) for generations to come. “ The Study Quran , joins the groaning shelves of ‘study Bibles’ as a resource for Muslims-and for Christians who want to learn more about this closely related sister faith.” ( ReadTheSpirit.com ). “ The Study Quran from HarperOne is a historic and ground-breaking work produced by a distinguished team of Islamic Studies scholars.” ( Maxwell Institute podcast ). Reviews
"Like fundamentalists of every flavor, radical Islamists come to their wars of ideas armed with proof-texts—those decontextualized bits of scripture that can be strung together in chains to justify whatever one happens to believe. Unlike the Bible, it contains very little sustained narrative, and the individual surahs (chapters) were not all revealed as discrete units, so each ayah has an independent context of original reception. The results are remarkable, and they have the wonderful added effect of limiting the ability of both adherents and detractors to manipulate the book’s meaning through uncritical prooftexting. In the 33rd Ayah of Surah 5 (The Table Spread), we read the following injunction: Verily, the recompense of those who wage war against God and His Messenger, and endeavor to work corruption upon the earth is that they be killed or crucified, or have their hands and feet cut off from opposite sides, or be banished from the land. since they embraced Islam in the presence of the Prophet, then renounced it through their actions, a small minority have considered the verse to apply to apostates in general. It seems clear, however, that the severe punishments in this verse pertain specifically to those who commit various crimes brazenly and with exceptional brutality, violence and terrorization of innocent people. And for English-speaking Muslims who are not terrorists and radical Islamists (which is about 99.9% of the total), it provides a valuable tool for deepening faith and demonstrating the shallowness of the proof-texters who constantly attack them. In an interview with CNN shortly after the volume’s publication, the lead editor, Seyyed Hossein Nasr argued that “the best way to counter extremism in modern Islam is a revival of classical Islam.” That is a tall order for any single book, but I suspect that, if a revival of classical Islam ever happens in the English-speaking world, the revivalists will all carry copies of the Study Quran–and the revolution will be extensively footnoted."
"The pages, a tad thin, but as Simone interested in Islam in a very big way, I find this wonderful tome to be very helpful."
"The essays in the back provide guidance on how Muslims understand and use the Quran by international scholars from a variety of backgrounds."
"It is a bit of a new translation with MUCH MORE commentary and printed on the thinnest paper possible, in other words, a long read but one I am definitely looking forward to finishing!"
"Very comprehensive Qu'ran with very in depth explanation of each verse."
"Beautifully put together."
"It is one of the best Translation of Quran."
"I am so happy to buy this book."

To Selena, with Love: Commemorative Edition
Chris Perez tells the story of his relationship with music star Selena in this heartfelt tribute.
Reviews
"Chris really opens up the door and gives us a glimpse into their life as it was from before they were a couple to the aftermath of that terrible day."
"Excellent, heart warming read."
"To find beauty, grace, humility, ambition, compassion, intelligence, sweetness and superb talent in one individual is extremely rare."
"So much more insight into how Chris loves Selena."
"The timeline of the book follows a similar timeline to Selena the movie (minus her childhood and the original Los Dinos years of course), it provides a personal account of Chris' perspective as a band member of Los Dinos, what it was like to be on tour with them, including the early days and the later success, how his relationship with Selena began, the details of their elopement, and the ups and downs they went through as a newly married couple trying to juggle fame, fortunate, family and 5 dogs. It is so easy to see Selena's smile and hear her laugh the way Chris describes her, he brings her back to life in the pages of the book, making her come alive more as a human being through personal anecdotes about Selena, opposed to focusing on the dazzling performer she was and the superstar she was going to become."
"Thank you, Chris for sharing your memories and allowing me just for a few days to enjoy your heartfelt memories of our beloved Selena."
"The way Selena is portrayed is human and it makes me respect and love her even more not only as an artist but a person."
"It was bittersweet in the sense that it's amazing that his love holds strong for her till this day but sad that he can't seem to let go."

“Bully for the Band!”: The Civil War Letters and Diary of Four Brothers in the 10th Vermont Infantry Band
Despite the hardships they suffered, including the loss of one brother, their writings (supported by detailed scene-setting narratives by editor Davis) reveal the Georges’ fraternal bond that sustained them emotionally and ensured they would continue to serve their comrades in battle. --Civil War News. "A thoroughly researched scholarly work...Kudos to James Davis for a fine book on a very important area of band research."
Reviews
"All afficianos of the US Civil war, especially past and present musicians of the period will be thoroughly entertained and fascinated by dailiness of the soldier-musicians presented by the Four George brothers in BULLY FOR THE BAND, While one of the brothers succumbs finally to the "real" killer of the Civil War soldiers, that is, cholera and pneumonia, the other three Georges flourish durng their three-year soldering in the Army of the Potomac.Their deprivations are legend from rain downpours and hunger to illness and fatigue are relieved by the welcomed letters from home and very few furlongs."
"As a band reenactor I have read seven of the books in print about Civil War bands."
"The diary entries of Jere George are particularly poignant, as when he describes witnessing President Lincoln riding through Petersburg, shortly after the city fell into Union hands."
