Winter (The Lunar Chronicles)
Princess Winter is admired by the Lunar people for her grace and kindness, and despite the scars that mar her face, her beauty is said to be even more breathtaking than that of her stepmother, Queen Levana. Here, she offers an appropriately sweet, fluttery Snow White-esque voice for Winter; a deliciously purring, cooing "popular mean girl" voice for Queen Levana; a French accent for Jacinl and many, many more. Even background characters who appear for just a line or two get distinctive voices, such as an Australian-accented guest at the wedding banquet. Soler's pacing is excellent, and she skillfully navigates listeners through Meyer's 23-hour story."
Reviews
"The Lunar Chronicles is a re-imagined set of fairy tales set in the future that intertwines Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, and Snow White. Fairest of Them All is a companion book that offers Levana's (evil stepmother to Winter) and Stars Above - a set of short stories that take place after Winter."
"Having all been united (except for Scarlet- shes still imprisoned on Luna), the team has successful derailed the marriage between Emperor Kai and queen Levena by kidnapping Kai and escaping off in the Rampion to plot their next moves; head to Luna, rescue Scarlet, and overthrow Levena while instating the true Lunar Queen in her place, none other than our beloved Cinder (or Princess Selene as is her true birth name). Meanwhile, Scarlet is imprisoned on Luna, the plaything of the mentally fragile Princess of Luna, Winter. She is thrilled with the return of her best friend Jacin after the kidnapping of the Queens betrothed and through him eventually learns of the plan by the others to overthrow Levena and instate Cinder (Selene) as Queen. Having always been jealous of her beauty and the way in which the people of Luna love her, Levena (becoming more and more unhinged as the book wears on) orders the assassination of Winter, by none other than Jacin (she is so twisted that Levena). Cinder and her gang eventually put into motion their plan which involves returning Kai to resume his marriage to Levena, arriving (semi)undetected to Luna, rescuing Scarlet."
"A very good friend enlightened me, and I promptly purchased and consumed the preceding books and then started "Winter" from the top."
"I don't want to spoil it for anyone, but all of the fighting and mind controlling was just nuts! I just wish that the final scene could have been a wedding between Kai and Selene!"

Reviews
"I love the idea of tackling the difficulties of being a kid who grew up in the pathetic excuse of a 'foster' system, and having a biracial lead could have been so powerful. She is treated with a bit of special snowflake syndrome - I'm willing to look over it since she had actual faults and most of the 'special' was forced onto her by others (but really platinum blondes aren't really that rare, 5'10" is not short by any average, the college she was looking at offers scholarships and housing for foster kids and I'll get to the most beautiful thing in a bit) - but I felt like she had an honestly solid base character. I can't even begin to talk about how creepy and wrong it is and how Kricket feels violated but it's instantly dropped and forgotten. His role in the plot to be a man who protects invalidates Kricket's own characterization at several points and honestly, there is no sense in writing them into a romance. The universe could have been cool, some cross between Victorian and the ultra modern but it was so heavy in archaic sexism that there was never any time to explore it. I am so sick of YA authors falling back on age old tropes that need to die out already, they are overdone and frankly disgusting. If this book had spent more time on the plot and honest character developments and had fought against typical YA tropes it would have been so much better."
"I enjoyed that Kricket was a foster child from a harder place than many people ever experience, but I thought that could have translated better into who she was as a person. Kricket's inner monologue indicated that she had hardened her heart, but she didn't seem all that hard-hearted to me, as she started to trust her captors far too easily. While Kricket herself seemed to be a feminist, as the reader, I could never quite tell when her feminism would manifest and when she would play the victim in need of saving. Most concerning for me (especially for an audience of young female readers) is that one of these times she actually falls asleep fully dressed in the arms of her love interest and awakens completely naked and lying next to him in bed. This reeks of taking advantage of a sleeping woman and all my hackles rose, but Kricket is not appalled or offended or scared...Instead, "Was it hot?""

The 5th Wave
"— Entertainment Weekly (Grade A) The Passage meets Ender's Game in an epic new series from award-winning author Rick Yancey. Now, it's the dawn of the 5th wave, and on a lonely stretch of highway, Cassie runs from Them. Beguiling and mysterious, Evan Walker may be Cassie's only hope for rescuing her brother--or even saving herself. But Cassie must choose: between trust and despair, between defiance and surrender, between life and death. version of sweet, harmless aliens--in The 5th Wave , Rick Yancey imagines a silent invasion that takes extraterrestrial intelligence to a whole new level. Alternating points of view peel back each new layer of the novel while death, separation, and love, push his diverse characters to survive in a terrifying new world. But they are ruthless and determined, and their methods for gaining control mean readers will never again see owls as the friendly, mail-delivering avians portrayed in the world of Harry Potter. While the big body counts (billions die) happen largely offscreen, there are numerous more personal instances in which teens are both killers and killed.

"From the previous point of "Or at least they think they do": There are an absurd amount of false truths and lies, you never truly know if what a character is saying is true, especially if they aren't currently the main focus. The 3rd book (I'm currently still reading and have not finished yet), only 1 character know the "Truth", and everyone is stuck with their all their previous beliefs, and you just have to sit back and watch them act as if they have everything planned."
"One of the reasons I don't read much fiction is because I don't come across many fictional books that I truly like - and I end up becoming disinterested and donating the half-read books to some book drive. I can't remember the last book I read that had this much sarcasm, but if they've placed only half the sarcasm in the movie that is in the book - the movie will be a unique mix of horror, suspense and comedy (how often do you get that combo in a book/movie)? I didn't give the book 5 stars because it's unoriginal - the vibe you get from the book is that you have a really intelligent author that knows what is currently "hot" and pounced on the genre while it's still in demand."
"Now having said that, I know how for avid readers, watching the movie before reading the book is a big taboo but it was how I had come across the book. It does provide more background for the characters that we had grown to love on the screen but the changes that the producers for the movie had made makes me regret watching the movie."

"However, I don’t feel as attached to Cress, Thorne, and Kai. I like Thorne and Cress, but I feel like with all of the action that happened in the book Cress, there wasn’t a lot of room for me to feel connected to those two. I think some aspects just needed rewritten so it could be at least 200 pages shorter. Wolf and Scarlet’s love story makes me so happy inside. And Cinder’s bravery and take-charge attitude kept me on the edge of my seat. All in all, there were a few things that I didn’t enjoy in this conclusion, but for the most part, it was a good ending to a great sci-fi series and I’m excited to see what else Marissa Meyer has in store for us."

Reviews
"I will say that the ending is far more predictable than the first book in that the analyst in the safe room, his departure was a surprise and the 3rd book was a safe "happy" ending of sorts."
"I have been busy building houses but am winding down and plan on doing more reading in my retirement and you are in the top three of my list."
"I understand wanting to connect some dots for readers who joined at the end rather than the beginning, but it inhibited my enjoyment of the book to have to quickly scan and skip 3 or 4 pages at a time to get past the summaries."
"The Atlantis World (The Origin Mystery, #3) by A.G. Riddle. A good finish to the trilogy!"
"A.G. Riddle's conclusion to his Atlantis series is my favorite of the bunch. The other two had more of a thriller/mystery threat theme, whereas World focuses more on the back story. The genetics, the dilemma of technological advancement, the origin theory."
"I agree with the author, that the third book in the trilogy was a departure from the first and second--and I loved it."
"This last book at times was hard to follow all that was happening and why, but in the end it all became clear."
"The 'good' guys win and the 'bad' guys lose but billions of other people lose too."

Clockwork Princess (The Infernal Devices Book 3)
Danger and betrayal, love and loss, secrets and enchantment are woven together in the breathtaking finale to the #1 New York Times bestselling Infernal Devices Trilogy, prequel to the internationally bestselling Mortal Instruments series. Danger intensifies for the Shadowhunters as the New York Times bestselling Infernal Devices trilogy comes to a close. With the cunning and dangerous Mortmain still on the loose and threatening Shadowhunters everywhere, as well as unresolved feelings still in her heart, bride-to-be Tessa finds it increasingly challenging to get excited about her upcoming nuptials. A must-read for Clare’s fans, this is also highly recommended for followers of Gail Carriger’s Finishing School books and Melissa de la Cruz’s Blue Blood series.
Reviews
"Half way through the book, I realized what was going to happen when I found the tree and started reading. There's a lot of wrapping up and answers to questions from Infernal Devices as well as Mortal Instruments, so be prepared for a few heartbreaking scenes, as well as heartwarming. I know we see this in book two, but I thought it was an interesting fact, since we see in MI several times the mention that there is `no such thing as ghosts.'. I would not have asked for it to end any differently, even if it was a bit unrealistic how things worked out for most of the characters. There are a lot of things that will make more sense, since the Shadowhunter specifics are more detailed in City of Bones."
"I absolutely loved Clockwork Princess and felt like The Infernal Devices was a series that got better and better with each book and culminated in a fabulous ending. It picked up a few months after the second book left off and the Magister is still somewhere plotting against the shadowhunters, Tessa is still in love with Jem and Will and Charlotte is fighting to hold onto the institute. This book was so fantastic and I have never been happier about the ending of a series than I was with this one."
"The first was Jem's logic - when the reason for his behaviors were revealed, it made him look like a total idiot. Second was the author's fascination with creating love triangles and related "oh no, I musn't" angst, no matter how artificial the mechanism for doing so."

Mockingjay (Hunger Games Trilogy, Book 3)
The greatly anticipated final book in the New York Times bestselling Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins. Powerful and haunting, this thrilling final installment of Suzanne Collins's groundbreaking The Hunger Games trilogy promises to be one of the most talked about books of the year. While I didn't know every detail, of course, the arc of the story from gladiator game, to revolution, to war, to the eventual outcome remained constant throughout the writing process. In the novel, you never leave Katniss for a second and are privy to all of her thoughts so you need a way to dramatize her inner world and to make it possible for other characters to exist outside of her company. Q: Are you able to consider future projects while working on The Hunger Games , or are you immersed in the world you are currently creating so fully that it is too difficult to think about new ideas? A: I have a few seeds of ideas floating around in my head but--given that much of my focus is still on The Hunger Games --it will probably be awhile before one fully emerges and I can begin to develop it. Q: The Hunger Games is an annual televised event in which one boy and one girl from each of the twelve districts is forced to participate in a fight-to-the-death on live TV. A: A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers Nineteen Eighty Four by George Orwell Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle Lord of the Flies by William Golding Boris by Jaapter Haar Germinal by Emile Zola Dandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury Grade 7 Up Following her subversive second victory in the Games, this one composed of winners from past years, Katniss has been adopted by rebel factions as their symbol for freedom and becomes the rallying point for the districts in a desperate bid to take down the Capitol and remove President Snow from power. But being the Mockingjay comes with a price as Katniss must come to terms with how much of her own humanity and sanity she can willingly sacrifice for the cause, her friends, and her family. Collins is absolutely ruthless in her depictions of war in all its cruelty, violence, and loss, leaving readers, in turn, repulsed, shocked, grieving and, finally, hopeful for the characters they've grown to empathize with and love. Mockingjay is a fitting end of the series that began with The Hunger Games (2008) and Catching Fire (2009) and will have the same lasting resonance as William Golding's Lord of the Flies and Stephen King's The Stand .
Reviews
"All in all, this is a really good book which are a great gift for every Hunger Games fan!"
"However, it is almost given that unlike the Enders series that turned more and more unreal as well as more distant from the subjects of the first book, this one could develop with more continuity."
"Catching Fire is different than most of the other young adult fiction books, because of the character development, and the relationship from book to movie."
"She unwillingly and reluctantly has become the symbol of the rebellion and the rebel leaders urge her to exploit this via video feeds to the 12 Districts. Katniss at first feigns infirmity but eventually caves in after negotiating an agreement with the rebel leaders that they will not harm Peeta or the other Hunger Games survivors if they assume leadership."
"Although I was figuring out what might have happened (and did happen) with the ending, I was unsure if these things would happen. It extends the story we learn from the first two books but is in a completely different type of light with such new situations and circumstances!"
